The most important man in a child’s life A bond between a father and his child lasts a lifetime, as do the memories created in a child’s formative years. Children love having special time with the most important man in their lives, whether that time is spent fishing, watching a game, playing catch or just sitting around having simple conversations. Those who have a special father in their lives will have a chance to show their appreciation on Sunday, June 21. Those who can’t celebrate with their fathers can certainly pay tribute to other important men in their lives, like a father figure who has made a real difference for them. Make a special meal, participate in his favorite hobby, buy him tickets for a big upcoming game, take a trip down Memory Lane and discuss your favorite moments together. PRINCETON — Thursday, June 18, at 2:30 p.m., Acres of Adventures is a fun and experiential way to understand, appreciate and apply science through a variety of hands-on agriculturally-based activities, presented in partnership with 4-H and the University of Illinois Extension. Sponsored by Heartland Bank and Trust, this program will also be at the library on Thursday, June 25, and Thursday, July 2. Also on Thursday, June 18, Coffee & Couplets poetry sharing night will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 20, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., there will be a bookwalk at the Princeton Pollinator Garden adjacent to the library parking lot. What would you do if, for just one day, you could be a busy, buzzy bumblebee, a creeping crocodile, a fluttering monarch butterfly or a growling grizzly bear? We’ll move from page-to-page in the green space and learn about pollinators and plants at the Princeton Pollinator Garden. Monday, June 22, at 6:30 p.m., the Monday Night Movie will feature the true-life chronicle of a country music legend’s rise to fame, from his early days on an Arkansas cotton farm to signing with a major recording studio in Memphis. Tuesday June 23, at 10:30 a.m., summer reading story time and music. Also on Tuesday, at 3 p.m., the Teen Book Club will meet. At 6:30 p.m., LaDonna Mazzorana will do a Wellness Series talk. Brian Ellis SPRING VALLEY — The week of June 15, summer reading registration starts with children summer hours of Monday and Wednesday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Tuesday 10 a.m. - 7 p.m., Thursday 2-7 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Parents and/or guardians are asked to come in during the children’s hours to register. Also, please bring in their library cards when they register. Summer reading events will begin on Monday, June 22, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. For first through third grade students there will be music magnet crafts; on Tuesday, June 23, from 5:30 to 6 p.m., for prekindergarten and kindergarten students, there will be bell shaker crafts; on Wednesday, June 24, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., for fourththrough sixth-grade students, there will be rock star microphone crafts;
and on Thursday, June 25, from 5 to 6 p.m., for seventh- through 12th-grade students, there will be musical chairs painting. The adult summer reading program will run from Monday, June 15, to Saturday, Aug. 1. Any adult patron may come to the library to pick up a reading log and participate in weekly contests to be eligible for prizes. WYANET — Read to the Rhythm ... what a joyful noise ... Music and Reading. That is what the Wyanet Library’s summer reading program is all about. Sapp Library has three rhythmic programs set-up for the first three Mondays. On Monday, June 22, Jenn Allen from Princeton Arts Academy will show the participants how to keep rhythm on bucket drums. Then the last Monday, June 29, is set up for the pizza party and rewards from the reading program. Also, the library has a coupon exchange. Even if coupons are expired, bring them to the library. The expired coupons are sent to troops serving overseas. TISKILWA — The Tiskilwa Public Library has kicked-off its summer reading program for tweens, from fifth to eighth grades. Readers will meet on Tuesday, June 30, Tuesday, July 14, Tuesday, July 28, Tuesday, Aug. 4 and Tuesday, Aug. 11. LADD — The Ladd Public Library will host a summer reading program for children of all ages. The theme this year is summer fun for everyone. The library will be offering a variety of programs for a variety of ages including movie Mondays, read away your Tuesdays and fabulous fun Fridays. The library is also considering starting a Book Buddies program which would match younger children (6-9 year olds) with an older child (11-14 year olds) and would consist of the “buddies” meeting at the library and reading together for a pre-determined amount of time. The idea is to form a type of mentoring program where the older children help the younger children to keep reading all summer long and possibly continue into the next school year. The success and feasibility of this program would depend on the number of children, both younger and older who would sign up for the program. Let the librarians know if you’re interested in this program. BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. PERU — Thursday, June 18, join the Peru Library’s third daycation bus trip on a visit to the Funks Family Farm and Museum, which was the first electrified farm in Illinois. LASALLE — On Tuesdays in June, the library will offer preschoolers and their caregivers story time express, an interactive mix

Saturday, June 20, at 11 a.m., there will be a summer road trip to LaSalle’s Pulaski Park pavilion where Last Muffler and Brake Shop owner Brad Cooley, will explain what’s under the hood of the family car and share tips on how to keep it properly maintained. Tuesday, June 23, at 6 p.m., the library will offer a program entitled, Hollywood and WWII. Author/ historian Ed Finch will talk about the WWII era, and how it shaped the movie industry during that time. Wednesday, June 24, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the library will host its first hands-on technology workshop. Attendees are asked to bring questions and their mobile devices, and the library staff will help answer any questions. Light refreshments will be served. PUTNAM COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT — Beginning the week of Monday, June 22, the six libraries of the Putnam County Public Library District will take library patrons on a musical journey through stories and songs during the Read to the Rhythm summer reading program. Judy Dyke What a wonderful time to start doing some grilling out. The weather is perfect for the cooking, if it would just stop raining. Father’s Day is coming up, plus a lot of warm weather.
Hawaiian Ham Delight 4 pieces thick sliced ham 2 potatoes, peeled and cubed 4 carrots, peeled and sliced 2 20-ounce cans crushed pineapple 2 teaspoons brown sugar Start and heat the grill. Place ham slices, cubed potatoes, sliced carrots, pineapple pieces and brown sugar on a large piece of aluminum foil. Sprinkle with some of the pineapple juice from can. Wrap aluminum up and over ingredients to seal the packet. Wrap packet again in aluminum foil. Place wrapped packet directly on the grill over the high heat. Turn packet to keep cooking until potatoes and carrots are tender. Can make into two packets so it cooks a little faster. Serves 2.
Baked Beans and Sausage 1 18-ounce package smoked sausage links, sliced 1/2-inch thick 1 1/2 cup chopped onion 3/4 cup barbecue sauce 2 tablespoons syrup 2 tablespoons cider vinegar 1 16-ounce can red kidney beans, rinsed 1 16-ounce cam pinto beans, rinsed 1 16-ounce can black beans, rinsed Preheat grill. Place sausage slices in a cast iron skillet and place skillet over heat. Cook sausage for 3 minutes on each side or until evenly browned. Remove sausage slices to a plate. Add chopped onions to skillet and cook until softened.
Add barbecue sauce, syrup, apple cider vinegar and a little water. Bring mixture to a boil. Open all cans and add rinsed beans to skillet. Return sausage slices to skillet. Mix well and cover skillet with lid. Heat, stirring occasionally for about 20 to 25 minutes. Serves 12 to 16.
Meatball Subs 1 pound frozen, fully cooked Italian style meatballs 1 27-ounce jar chunky spaghetti sauce 4 hoagie style buns 1 cup shredded Mozzarella cheese Cut 4 16-inch pieces of heavy duty foil. Place 1/4 of the frozen meatballs on each piece of foil. Top with desired amount of spaghetti sauce. Wrap foil around each serving of meatballs in a flat pack sealed. Cook as directed. Before serving, spoon meatball on hoagie rolls and sprinkle shredded cheese on top. Serves 4.
Beer Can Chicken 1 4- to 5-pound whole chicken 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt 3/4 teaspoon sugar 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1/4 teaspoon paprika 1 12-ounce can beer Preheat grill. Remove and discard fat from inside the body cavity of the chicken. Remove giblets and rinse chicken inside and out, under cool running water. Drain chicken and pat dry with paper towels. In a small bowl, combine salt, sugar, pepper and paprika. Mix well. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of the rub inside the body cavity and spread the remaining rub over the outside of the chicken. 6 to 7 holes in the top of the can. Pour out 1 inch of beer from the can. Holding the chicken upright, insert beer can into body cavity of chicken. Cover tips of the legs with foil and stand chicken up on beer can over center of hot grate. Spread out legs of chicken to form a tripod. Cook chicken until meat is tender, about 2 hours and internal temperature reaches 160°. When done, remove can being careful not to spill hot beer. To serve, carve chicken from the bone. Serves 4 to 6.
Basic Beef Hobo Dinner in a Pouch 1 medium onion, peeled and sliced 1 pound lean ground beef 4 medium potatoes, peeled and sliced 4 medium carrots, peeled and sliced Salt and pepper Garlic salt Seasoned Salt Butter Cut 4 12-inch pieces of heavy duty foil.
Place equal portions of onion on each piece of foil. In a medium bowl, combine 1/2 cup water and ground beef; mix well. Shape 4 hamburger patties. Set 1 hamburger patty on top of the onions on each piece of foil. Arrange with salt, pepper, garlic salt and seasoned salt to taste. Dot with butter. Wrap foil to seal packets. Serves 4.
Spam Packs 1 12-ounce can Spam, cut 1/4-inch thick 1 20-ounce can crushed pineapple, drained 1 15-ounce can yams, drained 1 15-ounce can whole white potatoes, drained 2 tablespoons butter 1 cup dark brown sugar Preheat grill. Set out two large pieces of foil. Divide Spam slices, pineapple, yams and white potatoes into aluminum foil packets. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over ingredients. Wrap packets up and seal. Wrap another sheet of foil over the packets. Place wrapped packets directly on hot grate and cook for 20 minutes turning once. Serves 2. Jimmy D Golf SPRING VALLEY — The 33rd annual Jimmy D Golf Day will be Sunday, July 12, at Spring Creek Golf Course and Deer Park Country Club in Oglesby. The event is held in memory of James A. “Jimmy” DeAngelo, who died at age 37 in 1983 after fighting cancer. It was the wish of Jimmy and his family to raise funds for cancer patients. The event raised $20,677 last year and more than $658,000 over the past 32 years. This year’s goal is $22,000. The proceeds will benefit the Esophageal and Colon Cancer Center at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley. Event organizers are seeking golfers as well as sponsors.The golfer donation is $95 prepaid or $100 on July 12. PRINCETON — On Saturday, July 18, the Zearing Child Enrichment Center will again be sponsoring the Z Tour Bike Ride, a bicycle road ride originating in Princeton and includes many surrounding communities. The event will begin at Zearing Park and will include the registrant’s choice of a 10-mile (group ride at 10 a.m.), 30 mile, 50-mile, 62-mile (metric century) and 100-mile (century) ride on specified routes throughout Bureau County.
