Long may it wave Flag Day is celebrated on Sunday, June 14, which commemorates the adoption of the United States flag, which happened on that day in 1777, by the Second Continental Congress. Even though the day is not an official federal holiday, the President of the United States is the one who officially proclaims the observance of this special day. The first Flag Day was made official in 1916, when President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation and made the day official. In August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an act of Congress. Pennsylvania was the first U.S. state to celebrate the day on June 14, 1937. The flag of the United States of America has 13 horizontal stripes alternating red and white with a blue rectangle bearing 50 white, five-pointed stars. Those stars represent the 50 states, and the 13 stripes represent the 13 colonies. Nicknames include “Stars and Stripes,” “Old Glory” and “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Since 1977, the design of the flag has been officially modified 26 times since 1777. Tonight’s discussion will be on “The Drowsy Chaperone Book” by Bob Martin and Don McKellar, music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, a jazz-age musical in a modern comedy, and “The Fox on the Fairway” by Ken Ludwig, a fast-paced comedy about life, love and golf. Wednesday, June 17, the Junior High Book Club will meet at 3:30 p.m. Also Wednesday, June 17, there will be a musical performance by Jeanie B! Music makes the world go round. The program begins at 4 p.m. Jeanie B! will read and rap popular books while the audience creates the rhythm track. She’ll sing songs about reading and rhythm while inviting children to learn more about the connection between music, poetry and literature. Jeanie’s got a big ol’ box of instruments to share and, above all, a love of books and music that’s contagious. For parents who don’t get to go out to live music concerts much anymore, this is a great way to satisfy their need for a rockin’ good time and enjoy quality time with their children. You can expect lots of dancing, singing, jumping, laughing and family bonding at this show. WYANET — Read to the Rhythm ... what a joyful noise ... Music and Reading. That is what the Wyanet Library’s summer reading program is all about. Everyone is welcome to sign-up during any of the Mondays in June. The library’s program is set for each Monday in June at 2 p.m. The R.A. Sapp Library has three rhythmic programs set-up for the first three Mondays. On Monday June 15, Mrs. Martin will bring Boom Whackers to the library for all to enjoy. On Monday, June 22, Jenn Allen from Princeton Arts Academy will show the participants how to keep rhythm on bucket drums. Then the last Monday, June 29, is set up for the pizza party and rewards from the reading program. Each Monday, there will be a story, and the participants can turn in their reading

WALNUT — The Walnut Public Library has added new books to its shelves. Stop in, check out new books or check out a favorite book. The library also has books on cassette and CD. Call the library to find out how to download books on electronic devices. Also, the library has a coupon exchange. Even if coupons are expired, bring them to the library. The expired coupons are sent to troops serving overseas. TISKILWA — The Tiskilwa Public Library will be holding a book sale during the Strawberry Fest celebration on Saturday, June 13. Library hours on that day will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The library will also be selling raffle tickets for the Coaster Car Giveaway. Tickets are $1 each or six tickets for $5. Thursday, June 11, at 5:30 p.m. the library will have a dance party kick-off for the summer reading program. Come out and have fun dancing. There will also be games, pizza and popcorn. New this year is a summer reading program for tweens, from
fifth to eighth grades. Readers will meet on Tuesday, June 16, Tuesday, June 30, Tuesday, July 14, Tuesday, July 28, Tuesday, Aug. 4 and Tuesday, Aug. 11. LADD — The Ladd Public Library will host a summer reading program for children of all ages. The theme this year is summer fun for everyone. The library will be offering a variety of programs for a variety of ages including movie Mondays, read away your Tuesdays and fabulous fun Fridays. The library is also considering starting a Book Buddies program which would match younger children (6-9 year olds) with an older child (11-14 year olds) and would consist of the “buddies” meeting at the library and reading together for a pre-determined amount of time. The idea is to form a type of mentoring program where the older children help the younger children to keep reading all summer long and possibly continue into the next school year. The success and feasibility of this program would depend on the number of children, both younger and older who would sign up for the program. Let the librarians know if you’re interested in this program. BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. This Week The Hennepin United Methodist Church will hold its annual spring into summer salad luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at the church on Court Street in Hennepin. The menu will include a hot casserole, salads, cookies, iced tea, coffee and lemonade. The cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children 12 and under and preschoolers eat free. Prairie Arts Council to offer sumer music camp for kids PRINCETON — The Prairie Arts Council will offer its first summer music camp for kids at the Prairie Arts Center, 24 Park Ave. East in Princeton, from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m. Monday, June 22, through Thursday, June 25. Musication 101 is an introduction to music for children age 8 to 12 wanting to learn about music. The music camp is taught by Jen Allen of Princeton. Children will learn about counting and rhythm, music notation and vocabulary, instruments and different types of music. Activities will include crafts, clapping, stomping and other forms of playing and dancing. Snacks will be provided. The cost for this four-day music camp is $30. Salads are always a good thing to choose; you can make them into an accompaniment or as a main course meal. Sometimes a summer salad will just hit the spot ...
Crunchy Tossed Salad with Chicken 6 cups torn lettuce 3 cups cubed cooked chicken 1 cup sliced celery 1 cup sliced carrots 1/4 cup sliced green onions 3/4 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup milk 2 tablespoon tarragon vinegar 3 to 4 teaspoons prepared mustard 1/2 teaspoon pepper 2 cups potato sticks In a large bowl, combine the lettuce, chicken, celery, carrots and onions. In a small bowl, whisk the mayonnaise, milk, vinegar, mustard and pepper. Pour over salad, lightly toss to coat. Add potato sticks. Serve immediately. Serves 4 to 6.
Stuffed Iceberg Wedges 1 medium head iceberg lettuce 1/3 cup mayonnaise 1/4 teaspoon curry powder 1 cup (4 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup coarsely chopped fully cooked ham 1/2 cup chopped celery 1/4 cup minced fresh parsley 1 2-ounce jar diced pimientos, drained Salad dressing of your choice Remove core from the head of lettuce. Carefully hollow out lettuce leaving a 3/4-inch shell (save removed lettuce for another use). In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise and curry powder. Add the cheese, ham, celery, parsley and pimientos; mix well. Spoon into lettuce shell. Tightly wrap in plastic wrap, refrigerate for at least 3 hours. Cut into wedges. Serve wedges with salad dressing of your choice. Serves 4 to 6.
Hash Brown Potato Salad 5 bacon strips, diced 6 green onions, sliced 1 1-pound package frozen cubed hash brown potatoes, thawed 1/4 cup white wine vinegar 1/2 teaspoon celery salt Place bacon in a 1 1/2-quart microwave-safe bowl. Cover and microwave on high for 3 to 4 minutes or until bacon is crisp. Remove with a slotted spoon to paper towels to drain. Add onion to the drippings. Cover and microwave on high for
30 seconds. Add the potatoes, cover and cook on high for 6 to 7 minutes, stirring several times. Add the white wine vinegar, celery salt and diced bacon. toss to coat. Serves 4.
Apple Nut Tossed Salad 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 3/4 teaspoon sugar Salt and pepper to taste 1/2 cup chopped apple 1 tablespoon chopped green onion 3 cups torn Bibb lettuce 1 to 2 tablespoon chopped walnuts 1 to 2 tablespoons crumbled blue cheese In a large bowl, whisk the oil, mustard, sugar, salt and pepper. Add apple and onion, toss to coat. Add lettuce, walnuts and blue cheese; toss gently. Serve immediately. Serves 4.

Hot Bacon Asparagus Salad
2 hard cooked eggs, sliced In a large skillet, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp. Using a slotted spoon remove to paper towels to drain, reserving 2 to 3 tablespoons drippings. Cut asparagus into 1 1/2-inch pieces, sauté in drippings until crisp tender. Add the vinegar, sugar, mustard, pepper and bacon. Cook and stir for 1 to 2 minutes or until heated through. In a large salad bowl, combine salad greens and almonds. Add the asparagus mixture, toss gently. Arrange egg over the salad and serve immediately. Serves 6.

Summer camp guide IVCC Little Eagles Camp PHS golf camp OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Community College men’s basketball team will host the Little Eagles Basketball Camp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday June 15-18 in the gym. The camp is for boys in fifth to eighth grade. Head coach Chris Herman and IVCC players will work with participants on dribbling, shooting, passing, rebounding, defense and team play. Pre-registration is required and will be limited to the first 100 registrants. Cost of the camp is $65 per player and includes a camp T-shirt. All players should bring a sack lunch or they may purchase lunch in the IVCC cafeteria. Campers are encouraged to bring their own basketball. The event is held in memory of James A. “Jimmy” DeAngelo, who died at age 37 in 1983 after fighting cancer. It was the wish of Jimmy and his family to raise funds for cancer patients. The event raised $20,677 last year and more than $658,000 over the past 32 years. This year’s goal is $22,000.
