Local chef to appear on new Food Network show Wise Guys’ Chef Jeff is in a ‘Dinner Rush’ By Terri Simon tsimon@bcrnews.com

PRINCETON — It’s safe to say cooking is in his blood, and in a few weeks, TV viewers across the country will be able to see for themselves. Chef Jeff Patton, 56, the executive chef and kitchen manager at Wise Guys in Princeton, was chosen to appear on a new program on the Food Network called Dinner Rush. “I belong to The American Culinary Federation (ACF) and when they contacted me last November and asked if I would be interested in participating in a cooking competition show, I jumped at the chance,” said Patton. “It was sponsored by the Augusta, Ga., chapter of ACF. We taped the show over an eight-day period in February just outside Atlanta. It’s a farm-to-table show called Dinner Rush that is set to air June 5. Because of confidentiality clauses he had to sign in order to appear on the show, Patton is unable to speak about the show in-depth regarding how he did in the competition, who won and other particulars. He was able to say the same company that produces the popular Food

Network show, “Chopped,” also produced “Dinner Rush.” “It was an honor to have been chosen, and it was a blast,” Patton said. “I met a lot of talented chefs and made a few new friends along the way.” Patton comes by his culinary expertise naturally. His father owned/operated three bakeries, and his eight siblings have all been involved in the food industry, including one brother, Paul, who used to do all the food for the Chicago Bears’ training camp in Bourbonnais. Living with his wife of 24 years in LaSalle County, Patton moved to the area from Minnesota, where he ran a high-volume, three-star restaurant at a resort outside of Minneapolis. Starting to work at one of his brothers’ restaurants at the age of 13, he clearly knows his way around the kitchen. In 1987, he attended Hackberry Creek School of Culinary Arts in Irving, Texas. Throughout the years, Patton has cooked for several celebrities and sports figures, including Jessica Lange, Sam Shepard, Emilio Estevez, Danny Glover, Clint Eastwood, Walter Payton, Dan Hampton, Ron Rivera, Gary Fencik, just to name a few. He also appeared on “Good Morning America” back in the ‘90s for a Mother’s Day special along with five other chefs, and he did a weekly cooking segment

on a local radio show while living in Minnesota. “Cooking has taken me all over the country in my career, and I have had the pleasure of working with many talented chefs including Chef Richard Cohen from The Mansion At Turtle Creek in Dallas ... Although my brother was a huge influence on my choosing this career, my mother was the main driving force that pushed me to reach beyond what I thought I could ever do,” Patton said. Chef Jeff, as his friends know him, enjoys creating new dishes as well as putting his own spin on traditional ones. “I make well over 200 different soups and enjoy seeing people’s reaction when they try one they have never had before, such as Muligatawny, a spicy Indian soup with chicken, vegetables and apples,” he said. While Patton is used to cooking for celebrities of all kinds from all walks of life, he’s perfectly content now to be cooking for local celebrities, like the folks who eat at Wise Guys in Princeton. “Let me express that I am not a one-man show (at Wise Guys), I have a very promising and talented staff supporting me, and I have a lot of respect for Ed Kurth, the owner of Wise Guys. I plan to finish my career right here, doing what I love with some really great people,” he said.

Russell American Legion Post 938 in Ladd has announced its schedule for Memorial Day services on Monday, May 30, weather permitting: 7:45 a.m. at Ray Barto Memorial Park in Seatonville; 8:15 a.m. at Berean Cemetery; 8:45 a.m. at Cherry Miner’s Cemetery in Cherry; 9:45 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery in Arlington; 10:15 a.m. at Greenfield Cemetery in LaMoille; 11:15 a.m. at Dalzell Memorial Park in Dalzell; 11:45 a.m. at Ladd Cemetery in Ladd; and 12:15 p.m. at War Memorial Park in Ladd. The program, organized by the Tiskilwa Historical Society, will echo Tiskilwa’s first “Decoration Day” program, held in exactly the same location at Mount Bloom on May 30, 1868. WALNUT — Memorial Day ceremonies in Walnut will be Monday, May 30. The parade to the Walnut cemetery will form at the Walnut Veterans Memorial.      Rebecca Caudill Book Choice Award for 2017. This program is open to children in fourth through eighth grades. Twenty books have been nominated for the award, but each participating child has to read only three of the nominees to vote for their favorite. The Rebecca Caudill group will meet at the library for fun talks, games and snacks, ending with a pizza party and voting in February 2017. The library is also taking part in choosing the Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award. This award will be chosen from 20 nominees and voted on by participating high school students. The program will be conducted in the same manner as the Rebecca Caudill program. If interested in joining either of these groups, contact the library for a list of the nominated books. DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health. The Selby Township Library has announced the Summer Reading Program: Read for the Win! All kids ages 3 and up are invited to participate. The program will include activities like Ag in the Classroom, the Forest Park Nature Center, craft day and Library Olympics. Children will be encouraged to read books to earn points. Children who earn enough points will receive prizes at the end of the program. New books this month include: Robert B. Parker’s “Slow Burn by Ace Adkins”; “The 14th Colony” by Steve Berry; “As Time Goes By” by Mary Higgins Clark; “Most Wanted” by Lisa Scottoline; “Extreme Prey” by John Sandford; “What We Find” by Robyn Carr; “Fool Me Once” by Haran Coben; “Family Jewels” by Stuart Woods; and “The Call Heroes Mister: the Jesse White Story” by Rick Davis. TISKILWA — Sign up for the Summer Reading Program, “Read For The Win,” will take place during the week of June 6 at the library. The kick-off event will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, at the library. Every Thursday at 10:45 a.m., the library hosts a senior fitness class. Participants focus on balance, endurance, muscular strength, mental clarity and socialization. Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically. WALNUT — The Walnut Public Library Book Club will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, to discuss “A Great and Terrible Beauty” by Libba Bray. Refreshments will be served. The library is collecting empty inkjet cartridges for recycling. Cartridges can be deposited in a collection bin located to the left inside the door to the library. Cartridges should be placed in a sandwich bag before being dropped off. BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. WYANET — The library’s computer class continues to meet on the second Tuesday of each month through May. Dorene Stalter will answer computer questions. The computer classes start at 1 p.m. In June, the Wyanet Library will host an Introduction To Smartphones and Safety Course presented by Illinois Valley Cellular at 1:30-3:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 7. Smartphone education classes will be free to everyone. Lead speaker will be Rodney Tennison from Illinois Valley Cellular. OHIO — The library will be having its summer reading program this year again during the month of June. The program is held Wednesdays during the month of June at 2 p.m. There will be weekly activities and a month-long reading competition with prizes for the most books read. PRINCETON — Brandon Stover will be at the Princeton Public Library at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, to talk about shakuhachi, a Japanese bamboo end blown flute with strong connections to meditation and spirituality which came to Japan from China sometime in the 6th century. Stover will talk about the history of the instrument and its connection to spirituality. He will also give three musical performances and show a short film called “The Spiritual Nature of Shakuhachi” by Brandon Stover. On Thursday, May 26, at 6:30 p.m., the Princeton Public Library will hold the first class of a three-phase project on an English Paper Piecing quilting project. The participants will learn English Paper Piecing which is a hand quilting technique. The project, “Jefferson Star,” is a 27-inch-by-34-inch wall hanging/table topper. Pre-registration is required, and the cost for a kit is $39 plus tax. The kit includes the pattern, papers and acrylic template, plus instructions for making a 45-by-66-inch version of the quilt. The class will be led by Lisa Furleigh from “Quilting in the Valley” quilt shop in LaSalle. Participants should bring scissors, a good needle, fabric glue pen, fine weight cotton thread in a neutral color and a rotary cutter. Also bring scraps of fabric that would be appropriate for the paper piecing part, and 12, 7 and one-half inch by 7 and one-half inch background squares. The library will have scraps of fabrics to sell for those who don’t have enough and will also have the other supplies to purchase if needed. To celebrate Midland States Bank sponsorship of the cafe for the month of May, the Princeton Public Library is drawing a winner every Friday at 3 p.m. People can enter the drawing by dropping a business card into the fishbowl at the cafe counter. The first week’s winner will receive a Midland States Bank insulated lunch bag. Stop in throughout the month to see what other Midland States Bank swag will be offered. SPRING VALLEY — The University of Illinois Extension will do a Wellness Wednesday Series at the Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library which is a free program to participants. Each class will be presented by Extension educator Susan Glassman, and recipe samples will be served. Learn some new ways to plan and prepare tasty, healthy summertime foods while keeping the kitchen cool. Each class is from 4 to 5 p.m. The next class will be “Grilling and Summertime Salads” on Wednesday, June 8. The last class will be “Farmers Market Fresh; Cooking with Fresh Vegetables” on Wednesday, July 13. LAMOILLE — LaMoille-Clarion Public Library’s summer reading program starts June 1. Enjoy fun activities, great stories and snacks this summer at the library. Story times for prekindergarten through third graders will begin at 10:30 a.m., with fourth grade and older starting at 1:30 p.m. Bring a friend and join the fun and earn prizes at the same time. On Saturday, June 18, at 1 p.m., nationally renowned storyteller Beth Horner will entertain with stories and music. This program is for all ages. There is limited seating, so those who plan on attending should let the library know. The library has added many new titles to its collection of books, movies and audiobooks. Echo Bluff offers Family Adventure Day SPRING VALLEY — All families are invited to participate in Family Adventure Day on Sunday, May 29. Family Adventure Day gives a taste of what children will experience at day camp. Counselors will be available to demonstrate the various parts that make the whole of camp life. Adventure Day fee is $5 per person and even includes a ride on the Echo Bluff zipline. Organized and executed by park staff, the event will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Echo Bluff. No reservations are required, and families may come any time between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The event takes approximately one hour, depending upon the crowd.

Second annual daddy/ daughter dance

PRINCETON — The Bureau County Fair Queen second annual daddy/daughter dance will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 11, in the Allen Building at the Bureau County Fairgrounds in Princeton. The evening will be hosted by 2015 Bureau County Fair Queen Megan Foes, 2015 Jr. Miss Bureau County Fair Queen Mia Bowen and 2015 Little Miss Bureau County Fair Queen Ashley Richardson. The cost for the evening is $30 a couple with $10 for every additional daughter. The evening will include an official photo of each couple, refreshments, photo booth shots, candy buffet and a professional DJ. There will also be several different raffle prizes available with raffle tickets being $1. Homestead Festival kick-off PRINCETON — The 45th annual Homestead Festival will kick off with the lawn event fundraiser from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 11, at the Owen Lovejoy Homestead. Tickets are $30 in advance ($35 at the event) and include appetizers, desserts, beverages and entertainment. If weather does not permit, this event will take place at Ye Olde Underground Inn. This event is open to the public, and all proceeds go toward Homestead Festival activities and events.

PRINCETON — Friends of Extension and 4-H who help to support outreach educational programs for University of Illinois Extension – Bureau County and its 4-H/Youth Development Program invites individuals to participate in a cash raffle fundraiser. Four cash prizes — $2,500, $1,000, $500 and $250 — will be awarded on Friday, June 17. Tickets are a $50 donation; for a $100 you will receive three tickets. All monies raised from the event will be used to support the 4-H and Extension educational programs in Bureau County. The winning tickets will be drawn at 2 p.m. June 17 at the Becker Professional Building, 850 Thompson St., Princeton. PRINCETON — Gateway Service’s third annual 5K Superhero Showdown is approaching with lightning speed and promises to be a fun family event. The race is at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 25, at the Bureau County Fairgrounds, 811 W. Peru St. The Gateway 5K Superhero Showdown is a timed 5K (3.1 miles) run/walk for awareness of intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Returning heroes have a registration fee of $15, new heroes $20 ($25 after June 15), and groups of five or more heroes pay $15 per person. For those wishing to show support but who are unable to attend, “Ghost Runner” donations can be made for $10. Each Ghost Runner will have a marker along the track with their name on it. Awards will be handed out to the first-, second- and thirdplace winner of age groups for both men and women, and special awards will be given to the overall first-place male finisher, the overall first-place female finisher, and costume contests for the best hero, best villain and best group of superheroes. Gardens needed for July Garden Walk The semi-annual Bureau County Garden Walk will return on Saturday, July 9. Individuals who are interested in “showing off” their gardens are asked to call to sign up now. Any kind of garden is welcome, including vegetable, flowers and even water feature gardens. The Garden Walk is presented by Bureau County Tourism and Princeton Tourism. Gardeners all over Bureau County are invited to share their hard work. The hours of the walk will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and admission is free. Agricultural endeavors Farm Bureau Foundation to sponsor Tractor Trek to support Ag in the Classroom PRINCETON — The Bureau County Farm Bureau Foundation is putting the final touches on plans for the fifth annual Tractor Trek. The Tractor Trek will be Saturday June 25, rain or shine. This year’s event is an effort to raise funds for the Ag in the Classroom program. Participants will have the opportunity to share the exciting event with other antique tractor enthusiasts as they travel through the west central portion of Bureau County. Pre-registration is required

by completing a registration form by June 10. There is a registration fee of $50. Refreshments, lunch and a fun-filled experience will be provided. The deadline to register is soon, space is limited. Panama Canal trip informational meeting PRINCETON — The Bureau County Farm Bureau has announced plans for a 17-day, 16-night trip to the Panama Canal on Jan. 27-Feb. 12, 2017. Travelers will travel through the famed Panama Canal from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico abroad Holland America’s MS Rotterdam from San Diego to Ft. Lauderdale. Port sites along the trip include locations in Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Columbia and more. For those interested in learning about

the trip, the Farm Bureau will host an informational meeting at 1 p.m. Monday, June 20, at the Bureau County Farm Bureau in Princeton. This is an informational meeting, and those attending are not in any way obligated to sign up for the trip. Ag in the Classroom golf outing

DIXON — The Bureau and Lee County farm bureaus will host their seventh annual golf outing for supporters of Ag in the Classroom. The outing will be Friday, June 24, at Timber Creek Golf Course in Dixon. The tournament will be a shotgun start, four-person scramble. Tee time is 9 a.m. and lunch will be served for all teams and sponsors during the event. Proceeds from the tournament

will benefit the Bureau and Lee County Ag in the Classroom program. All team registration includes 18-holes of golf, one-half cart and lunch. Team registration is suggested by June 3. Documentary about the next generation of farmers set for June 18 Screening of ‘Farmland’ from Academy Award-winning filmmaker James Moll hosted by Bureau County Farm Bureau, IFB and Ag View FS PRINCETON — The Bureau County Farm Bureau and its partners will provide the opportunity for everyone to see the film “Farmland” at the Apollo Theater on Saturday, June 18. The screening will take place at 10 a.m. in conjunction with the Princeton Farmers’ Market. Come see a unique view of the next generation’s family farm through the lens of Academy Award-winning filmmaker James Moll. “Farmland,” a feature length documentary that takes the viewer inside the world of farming for a first-hand glimpse into the lives of six young farmers and ranchers in their 20s. Through the personal stories of these farmers and ranchers, viewers learn about their high-risk/high-reward jobs and passion for a way of life that has been passed down from generation

to generation, yet continues to evolve. Tickets are free but must be spoken for prior to the screening by contacting the Farm Bureau. A ticket will include the movie, pop and popcorn, a brief discussion with local farmers following the movie and more. Produced by Moll’s Allentown Productions, “Farmland” received notable attention during its theatrical run securing reviews in several national mediums and recognition in film festivals across the country, including Atlanta, Cleveland and Newport Beach, Calif. Eagle Run/Walk PRINCETON — The third annual Eagle Run/Walk sponsored by Princeton Christian Academy will be Saturday, June 11.
