Mother’s Day accounts for one-fourth of the floral purchases made for holidays with only Christmas gathering more sales. About one-third (31 percent) of adults bought flowers or plants as gifts for Mother’s Day 2014. According to a survey by the National Retail Federation, two-thirds of those celebrating Mother’s Day will buy mom flowers, spending a total of $2.3 billion in 2015. Statistic Brain Research Institute estimates about 85.4 million mothers in the U.S. with the average American spending almost $170 on Mother’s Day gifts. The total sales for the holiday: $20.7 billion. Contrary to popular belief, Mother’s Day was not conceived and fine-tuned in the boardroom of Hallmark. The earliest tributes to mothers date back to the annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to Rhea, the mother of many mythological deities. The modern American holiday of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in Grafton, W.Va. Her campaign to make Mother’s Day a recognized holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died. The Canal Corridor Association will feature Illinois Road Scholar Erika Holst’s presentation on domestic servants of the 19th century after a dinner. This installment of the dinner and a little history series is Thursday, May 21, at the Lock 16 Center at 754 First St., LaSalle. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner beings at 6 p.m. Holst is the curator of collections at the Springfield Art Association of Edwards Place and will guide guests on a journey through an under-appreciated segment of history. Having live-in domestic servants seems like the height of luxury today, but in the 19th century, “hired girls” were common in middle-class households in Illinois. In a society without electricity and running water, household chores were onerous, and in the 19th century, a wave of immigrants made labor cheap and plentiful. In domestic servant situations, working-class men and women lived and worked side-by-side with their employers yet were considered second-class citizens, often leading to tense relationships. The menu is a choice of lasagna or raspberry balsamic cornish hen on a bed of wild rice and seasonal vegetables. Both entrees include strawberry pecan salad with balsamic vinaigrette, garlic breadsticks, angel food cake. The cost is $24 for CCA members and $29 for non-members. Reservations are required. ‘The Great Beanie Baby Bubble’ Your broker thinks your portfolio needs more diversification. Take a little out of metals, he says, put it into tech. Move money from here, put it there. Sell manufacturing, buy oil. You hope that’s sound advice but you’ve noticed that he never uttered a word about Terri stuffed aniSchlichenmeyer mals. That’s a good thing, as you’ll see in “The Great Beanie Baby Bubble” by Zac Bissonnette. At the end of 1998, the “richest man in the American toy industry” threw a party for his employees, at which he handed out lavish bonuses and palm-sized bears stuffed with synthetic beans. The man, Ty Warner, was the billionaire creator of Beanie Babies. The bears, in coming weeks, were worth more than $5,000 each. How did it happen that people lost their minds — and their childrens’ college funds — over stuffed animals? Zac Bissonnette tried to find out, but discovered that Warner grants few face-to-faces. Still, plenty of people were happy to fill in the blanks … Warner got his start in toys when his father got him a job at Dakin, a premiere “plush” company; there, charm and a flirtatious manner quickly made Warner Dakin’s top salesman. When he was caught promoting his own line of plush on Dakin’s time, he lost his job but by then, he’d become obsessed with the animals he’d created. He constantly refined them, trying to understand how to make them a sensation. That was only a matter of time. Says Bissonnette, “Warner understood things about toy sales that others didn’t,” pricing his Beanie Babies simply and at lowcost. That they became a fad with a handful of women in Chicago was a bonus. Those women were fierce about Beanie Babies, and they called stores around the country, looking for hard-to-find animals and spreading the mania. Salesmen began referring to no-longer-stocked animals as “retired,” raising the perception of rarity. People realized they could

Word spread as “everyone who did it told everyone they knew about it.” Warner became a billionaire. But as “people abandoned their senses” and the market became saturated by millions of plush on store shelves in the U.S., Canada and England, the bubble burst. And, says author Zac Bissonnette, that’s still not the end of the story … As someone who never bought one such toy, I found “The Great Beanie Baby Bubble” to be a fascinating study of the proverbial madness of crowds. From a what-were-wethinking vantage point years removed from the loss of serious money in pursuit of toys, that’s amusing — but this well-researched and well-told story also serves as a cautionary tale: it’s happened before — as Bissonnette indicates, it’s perhaps no coincidence that Beanie Babies and the dot-com bubble burst at the same time — and it could happen again. Tulips, anyone? Pop-culture fans will find this book delightful. It’s a rib-poker for anyone who can admit to a boxful of beans still in the closet. PRINCETON — Gateway Services will hold its second Gateway 5K at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 27, starting at the Bureau County Fairgrounds, 811 W. Peru St., Princeton. This 5K is for awareness of intellectual and developmental disabilities. At the Superhero Showdown, runners can choose to dress up as a superhero of their choice. There will be villains along the course with squirt phasers cooling the runners off as they move along the course. Participants are
not required to dress up. “Supporters of Gateway Services are heroes to our individuals. Without supporters of Gateway, we would be unable to provide essential services to adults and children with disabilities in Bureau, Marshall, and Putnam counties,” said Rachel Dean, communications manager of Gateway Services. The Gateway 5K Superhero Showdown will start and finish at the Bureau County Fairgrounds. Runners and volunteers will be able to park there and
registration will be in the main building starting at 7 a.m. “This year we have more age groups than last year. We had about 100 heroes and villains last year and hope to double that number,” said Dean. To volunteer as a villain, be at the fairgrounds no later than 7:15 a.m. for villain training. Cost to enter the Gateway 5K is $20 for online registration, and groups of 5 or more runners have a $15 registration fee. Registration on the day of will

Root Beer Float Cake Linda Moreno
1 package white cake mix 1 1/4 cups root beer 1/4 cup canola oil 2 eggs Frosting 2 envelopes of Dream Whip 1 cup root beer In mixing bowl, combine cake mix and 1 1/4 cups root beer; beat for 2 minutes. Add eggs and oil; beat for 2 more minutes. Pour into greased 9-by-13-inch pan. Bake at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes or until done. Cool completely. For the frosting: Combine 2 envelopes of Dream Whip and 1 cup root beer. Beat until blended. Frost cooled cake. Store cake in refrigerator. Very good.

Macaroni Salad 1 pound pasta 5 cups chopped vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, black olives, celery, onions, radishes, carrots, green peppers, zucchini, and any veggies you like) Dressing

1 1/2 cups mayonnaise 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup vinegar 1 can Sweetened Condensed Milk Cook pasta; drain and cool. Add vegetables. For dressing: Mix ingredients together and pour over pasta and vegetables. Refrigerate.

Cornbread 1 stick butter, melted 8 ounces sour cream 1 egg 1 can cream style corn, partially drained 1 box Jiffy Corn Muffin mix Cream butter, sour cream and egg together; add corn. Add corn muffin mix; mix together well. Spray a 9-by-12inch pan with cooking spray. Bake at 400° for 45 minutes. If still jiggly in center, bake for 5 minutes more. Very moist.
Delicious Cookies 1 cup oleo or butter 1 cup oil 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup white sugar 1 egg 2 teaspoons vanilla 3 1/2 cups flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar 1 cup oatmeal 1 cup Rice Krispies 1 cup corn flakes 1 cup coconut 1 12-ounce bag of chocolate chips Cream together oleo or butter, oil, brown sugar, white sugar, egg and vanilla. In separate bowl, commune flour, salt, baking powder, cream of tartar, oatmeal, Rice Krispies, cornflakes, coconut and chocolate chip. Add to first mixture and mix until well blended. The Gator and Princeton High School teams participated in Saturday’s Starved Rock Area Special Olympic Spring Games at Hall High School. About 250 athletes participated competing in the 50-, 100-, 200-, 400-, 800and 1500-meter runs, standing and running long jumps, shot put, tennis and softball throw, high jump, 400-meter, 800meter, and 2K walk races, wheelchair competitions and assisted races. Tiger Baseball Camps
PRINCETON — There will be two camps offered by the Princeton High School baseball program this summer The first will be a fundamentals camp from June 22-26. Sessions include: incoming grades 3-5 from 8:30 to 10 a.m. and incoming grades 6-8 from 10:30 a.m. to noon for $30; and incoming grades 9-12 from 1 to 4 p.m. for $45. The second camp will be a pitchers and catchers camp from June 29 to July 1 for incoming grades 9-12 from 9 a.m. to noon for $35. Camp instructors will include PHS varsity pitching coach Wick Warren and past and present players. Registration forms are available at PHS. SPRING VALLEY — A white bass tournament, sponsored by Illinois Valley Outdoors, will be May 17 on the Illinois River. Entry fee will be $75 per each 2-man team. There will be cash prizes for the top 20 percent of the field. Awards and dinner will be held at Illinois Valley Outdoors. Proceeds will be donated to the Spring Valley Walleye Club. Lady Lions Camp LAMOILLE — The LaMoille/Ohio “Hoop it Up with the Lions” Basketball Camp will be June 8-11 at LaMoille High School for all area students. The camp is open for all incoming kindergarten through second-grade students from 9 to 10 a.m. for $20. Students will shoot on smaller hoops to learn the proper form, and basic basketball skills. Incoming third- to fifthgrade students will meet from 10:30 a.m. to noon, sixth- to eighth-grade students from 12:30 to 2 p.m. and ninth- to 12th-grade students from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Fee for the first child is $30, $20 for second child and $10 for third child. This camp is also open to any boy basketball player that would like to participate from the LaMoille and Ohio school districts. The camp will be taught by members of the Lady Lions coaching staff, current and former players along with special camp instructors. If registration numbers are down, sessions may be combined.

Morris Gus Macker
MORRIS — The Morris Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be June 6-7. The tournament is open to boys and girls in age brackets from 10 and under, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, and 17-18. Adult divisions are open to men and women in age brackets that range up to 40, 50, 60 and over, with all levels of experience encouraged and welcome to play. Every player in the Macker tournament is guaranteed at least three games. All registered players also receive a T-shirt for participating in the event. The tournament will feature striped officials. On-line registration will be accepted through the

PRINCETON — The second annual KurtFest Soccer Tournament will be Saturday, June 27 at Zearing Park. The tournament is held in memory of Kurt Garvin, who passed away in 2014, sponsored by the Princeton Soccer Academy and Princeton Jaycees. There are tournaments for 3 v 3, 7 v 7 and 11 v 11. This year’s recipient is Kamden Wahlgren of Princeton. His parents are Erick and Staci. He has two other siblings, Kaiden, 10 and Emma, 5. Kamden is in second grade and was diagnosed with Pediatric Auto-Immune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Strep in 2012. He was recently diagnosed with Lyme disease and Toxic Encephalitis. MANLIUS — A sports physical clinic will be held at Bureau Valley High School on Wednesday,
May 27 for all Bureau Valley incoming seventh, eighth, sophomores, juniors and seniors. Incoming fifth-grade boys participating in JFL may also attend this clinic. Area doctors are providing the community service for any Bureau Valley student who needs the required sports physical. This clinic is not for incoming sixth grade students or incoming freshman students as they need a complete physical. Clinic times are as follows: seniors arrive at 5 p.m.; juniors at 5:15 p.m.; sophomores at 5:30 p.m.; eighth-grade students at 5:45 p.m.; seventh grade students at 6 p.m.; and fifth-grade students at 6:15 p.m. Students need to sign up and pick up a sports physical form from the school office. They must bring the completed form, including a parent’s signature and $10 the night of the clinic, or bring a parent with them. Forms can also be found on the school website.
