Spring styles will be blooming The P.E.O. Chapter IH is revving up for its spring style show at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at the First United Methodist Church in Princeton. Modeling of spring styles will be by Four Seasons of Princeton and will reflect trends and colors of the current season. Pictured is model Joni Simpson (right) with Doreen Gradert of the Four Seasons who will also be moderator of the show. All proceeds will support P.E.O. scholarship projects for women. The P.E.O. is a philanthropic organization committed to helping women pursue higher education. Tickets for the show are $10 and may be purchased by contacting P.E.O. PRINCETON — Thursday, April 16, “He Gave the World the Steel Plow: The John Deere Story” will be presented by Richard Morthland at 6:30 p.m. John Deere’s agricultural innovations, especially the self-scouring steel plow, monumentally impacted farming methods during the formative years of the U.S., making expansion into the vast prairies and plains of Middle America possible. Also Thursday, the Friends of the Library annual April book sale will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, April 17, the Friends of the Library annual book sale will continue from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 18, the Friends of the Library annual book sale will continue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday is bag day for the sale. Shoppers can buy a bag of books for $5. Specially marked books are half-price. Also on this day, members of the Friends of the PPL get early bird access at 9:30 a.m. Monday, April 20, the Monday night movie will begin at 6:30 p.m. and feature a drifter and retired gunfighter who rides into a conflict between the cattleman and a settler family. He comes to the assistance of the settlers who are bring terrorized by the cattleman and his hired hand. The drifter and the settlers take on the cattleman in a battle over the land. But the cattleman sends for a gunslinger, and the battle continues. Tuesday, April 21, preschool story time and craft will be at 10:30 a.m. The theme is ladybugs. Kauffman will be joined by Jacob Jameson of Walnut Custom Veggies and Katy Clarke of Edgewood Farms, an organic grower in Princeton. SPRING VALLEY — Thursday, April 16, the Life of Anne Frank will be presented at 6 p.m. Historian Jim Gibbons will present this story of a young girl of faith, hope, relentless spirit and wisdom beyond her years in the meeting room of the library. This is a free program and open to the public. The library is celebrating National Library Week until Saturday, April 18. The theme is Unlimited Possibilities @ your Library. Thursday, April 23, Sandi Sylver, ventriloquist, will return to the library at 6 p.m. in the children’s library. The title of the performance is Stories, Music, and a Ventriloquist Puppet Palooza! Sylver taught herself to be a ventriloquist by reading a library book about ventriloquism.
Then she practiced a lot ... and Voila! a career was born. This event is free and open to everyone that would like to attend a very entertaining program. Until Saturday, April 25, the library will hold amnesty weeks. During this time, patrons who have overdue items can bring them to the library and will owe nothing on the items. Also during this time, there will be free replacement on lost and/ or damaged library cards. There will be a raffle in the children’s and adult departments that allows a patron to enter once per visit when they check out. There will be a winner each week in each department. SHEFFIELD — The Sheffield Public Library will celebrate National Library Week with an open house from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 18. Coffee, juice and cookies will be served; “goody bags” with an assortment of reading-related objects for the children will be given away; and a drawing to win a Kindle Fire will be held. To be eligible for the drawing, you must be a resident of Sheffield with a current library card or you can sign up for a new card before April 18 (cards are free to Sheffield residents who live in town); you must register in person at the library during National Library Week, April 12-18; you must be 18 years of age or older; and you can only enter once. The drawing will take place at noon on April 18. You do not need to be present to win. LADD — The Ladd Public Library continues to hold preschool story times each Tuesday at 10 a.m. A different theme is
explored each week with stories, crafts and activities. OHIO — Thursday, April 16, there will be a computer class offered on Google Apps from 5:15 to 7:17 p.m. at the library. MINERAL — Until Saturday, April 18, the Mineral-Gold Public Library will celebrate National Library Week with fun activities planned. Stop in and enjoy a cookie, play guess the adult/kids candy jars and fill out a survey for the library. Browse through the books on the book sale table. For the young patrons, pick a little paperback book to take home. Stop in and see what’s going on. BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. PERU — Friday, April 17, the library will host a sci-fi fantasy night from 7 to 10 p.m. The library teen advisory group has planned a lineup of activities including a cosplay catwalk, sci-fi fantasy screenings, trivia contest, video games and more. The event is free and for ages 13 to 25. Peru Public Library is now offering daycation bus trips. Ever wanted to tour the Deere mansion? Experience the first electrified Illinois farm? See Steampunk invade a Renaissance Faire? Then the library’s daycation bus trips are for you. As part if its expanded adult programming, five trips have been scheduled between April and August. Partic-

PUTNAM COUNTY — The Putnam County Public Library District has expanded its homework hour program to offer homework assistance at the Magnolia, McNabb and Granville libraries throughout the school year. Students can tackle assignments in a comfortable and relaxed settings with access to library resources for school projects. Students can have their completed homework checked, or get help understanding their homework. Homework hour is available at the Magnolia Library from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the McNabb branch on Wednesdays and from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Granville branch. MAGNOLIA – The Magnolia branch will have a preschool story time for children ages 3, 4 and 5 years at 10 a.m. every Saturday. Stop in to enjoy a short story and related craft activity. Thursday, April 16, the Magnolia branch will show “The Lego Movie” at 6 p.m. An ordinary Lego construction worker, thought to be the prophesied “Special,” is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil tyrant from gluing the Lego universe into eternal stasis. Stop in the Magnolia branch from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturdays for a Lego workshop. Bring imagination and create Lego models. Lego workshops will continue every Saturday through May. This program is free and open to elementary school age children and teens.
The story of the Lincoln Assassination and John Wilkes Booth is the subject of a presentation by historian Jim Gibbons at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30, at the Magnolia branch of the Putnam County Library. While most Americans know the story, the details are not common knowledge. Gibbons will shine a light on the bits of trivia that tell the whole story. The program is free and open to the public. HENNEPIN – Preschool story times are at 2 p.m. Tuesdays and at 10:30 a.m. Fridays. Join the library staff for stories, crafts, games and more. This program is ideal for children ages 3, 4 and 5 years of age. After-school activities take place from 4 to 5 p.m. most Thursdays for children in early elementary school. Come to the Hennepin branch for stories and related crafts, activities and games. GRANVILLE – Join the Granville branch for stories and crafts. The preschool program is ideal for children ages 3, 4 and 5 years old. It is held at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The Granville Favorites Club meets the second Wednesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the Granville branch. Each month the group meets to discuss favorite and not-so-favorite titles participants have read. Join the library at 10 a.m. Thursdays for 30 minutes of stories and songs. This program is ideal for little ones under 3 years of age. MCNABB – At 10 a.m. on Saturdays, the McNabb branch hosts a children’s program for early elementary school children. April will be filled with projects that include musical instruments, wacky science experiments and awesome art projects. Preschool story times are at 11 a.m. Saturdays. This Week Illinois Valley Community College’s career services office will host the 24th annual job fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 16, in the IVCC gym. The fair is open to all job seekers and is free to attend. A total of 60 employers are expected to be on hand to meet and possible interview job candidates on the spot. The event will also feature a style show of women’s fashion.
The event will start at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 17, at the Ladd School gymnasium. Former DePue resident Tracy Moran DeGraff will present a 45-minute program of hilarious true stories. She is the author of “Life Anyway Mom.” The fashion show will feature clothing from LaynaBellas in Ottawa. Tickets are $15 each and will be available soon. The Putnam County Historical Society will hold its annual dinner and program Saturday, April 18, at the United Methodist Church in Hennepin. Mark Dvorak will present a program on the American Folk Song with a mix of songs and stories behind the songs. Here are some easy meals using Bisquick. They are main dishes or desserts to please the whole family with the ease you need after a hard day of work.
Impossibly Easy Taco Pie 1 pound lean ground beef 1 medium onion, chopped (1/2 cup) 1 1-ounce package Old El Paso Taco seasoning mix 1 4.5-ounce can Old El Paso chopped green chiles, drained 1 cup milk 2 eggs 1/2 cup Original Bisquick Mix 1/2 cup shredded cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese 3/4 cup chopped tomato 1 1/2 cups shredded lettuce Heat oven to 400°. Spray a 9-inch glass pie plate with cooking spray. Cook ground beef and onion in 10-inch skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until beef is brown; drain. Stir in dry seasoning mix. Spoon into pie plate; top with chilies. Stir milk, eggs and Bisquick mix until blended. Pour into pie plate. Bake about 25 minutes. Top with cheese and tomato. Bake 2 to 3 minuses longer or until cheese is melted. Let stand 5 minutes before serving. Serve with tomato and lettuce. Serves 6.
Italian Sausage Pot Pies 1 pound bulk Italian sausage or ground beef 1 medium onion, chopped (1/2 cup) 1 small green bell pepper chopped, (1/2 cup)
1/2 cup sliced mushrooms 1 8-ounce can pizza sauce 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (4 ounces) 1 cup Original Bisquick mix 1/4 cup boiling water Heat oven to 375°. Grease four 10to 12-ounce casseroles. Cook sausage, onion and bell pepper in 10-inch skillet over medium heat, stirring frequently, until sausage is no longer pink, drain. Stir in mushrooms and pizza sauce. Heat to boiling. Reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Spoon sausage mixture into casseroles. Sprinkle 1/4 cup cheese over each. Stir Bisquick mix and boiling water; beat vigorously 20 strokes. Place dough on surface sprinkled with Bisquick mix; gently roll in Bisquick mix to coat. Shape into a ball; knead about 10 times until smooth. Divide dough into 4 balls. Pat each ball into circle the size of the diameter of the casseroles. Make cut in each circle with a knife to vent. Place circles on sausage mixture in casseroles. Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until light golden brown.
Barbecue Pork Shortcakes 1/2 cup milk 2 teaspoons maple extract 1 3/4 cups Original Bisquick mix 1 18-ounce container refrigerated fully cooked original barbecue sauce with shredded pork 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables, thawed, drained 2 tablespoons maple flavored syrup Heat oven to 450°. In large bowl, mix milk and maple extract. Stir in Bisquick

mix until soft dough forms, beat 20 strokes. Place dough on surface generously sprinkled with Bisquick mix. Gently roll in Bisquick mix to coat. Shape into a ball, knead 10 times, press or roll into 6-inch square, about 1/2-inch thick. Cut into square biscuits. On ungreased cookie sheet, place biscuits. Bake 7 to 9 minutes or until lightly browned. Meanwhile, place pork in 1 1/2-quart bowl. Cover with microwavable plastic wrap, folding back one edge 1/4 inch to vent. Microwave on high 2 minutes; stir. If not hot, cover and microwave up to 4 minutes longer, stirring every minute. Stir in vegetables and maple syrup. Cover and microwave on high 1 minute. To serve, split biscuits in half and fill with pork mixture. Serves 4.
Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy 1 pound lean ground beef 1 egg 1/2 cup original Bisquick mix 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 medium onion, cut in half, sliced 1 4.5-ounce jar sliced mushrooms, drained 1 12-ounce jar beef gravy In large bowl, mix beef, egg, 1/4 cup of the Bisquick mix and the pepper. With wet hands, shape beef mixture into 6 oval patties, about 1/2-inch thick. Lightly coat patties with remaining 1/4 cup Bisquick mix. In a 12-inch nonstick skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Arrange patties in a single layer in skillet.
Add onion slices around and on top of patties. Cook 12 to 16 minutes, turning patties once and stirring onions, occasionally, until meat thermometer inserted in center of patties reads 160°. Spoon fat from skillet if necessary, discard. Add mushrooms and gravy to skillet. Turn patties to coat with gravy. Heat to boiling.
Barbecue Beef Cheese Melts 2 cups Original Bisquick mix 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard 1 cup milk 1 egg, beaten 1 teaspoon vegetable oil 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper 1/4 cup chopped onion 1 cup barbecue sauce 3/4 pound cooked roast beef (from deli) chopped 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (8 ounces) Heat oven to 350°. Spray a 13-by-9inch pan with cooking spray. In large bowl, stir Bisquick mix, mustard, milk and egg until mixed. Pour and spread in pan. Bake 15 to 17 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Top will not brown. Remove from oven. Meanwhile, in 10-inch nonstick skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add bell pepper and onion. Cook 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally until crisp tender. Stir in barbecue sauce and beef. Cook until hot. Spread over baked bread base. Top with cheese. Bake 4 to 5 minutes longer or until cheese is melted. Cut into squares. Serves 8. Serve with a tossed salad with your favorite kind of dressing. Person with the greatest Influence on my athletic career (and why): My father. Ever since I was a little kid my dad has always pushed me to do my best in everything that I do. I know that no matter what he always has my back and he will always be there when I need him. Person with the greatest influence in my life (and why): I have been so fortunate to have so many wonderful influences in my lifetime. Whether they were my parents, friends, directors, teachers, or coaches I appreciate each and everyone of them every single day. If you are reading this and you know who you are, I would like to thank you. If stranded on a deserted island, I would have my: Boyfriend, Taylor Carlson, and a stack of good books: Between the two I would have someone to talk to and somewhere to escape to when I got too bored. The last song I listened to: “For Good” from Wicked the musical.
People would be surprised to know: That I am actually a really OCD person and like when things are straight and in order, even though my car looks like a couple of tornadoes went through it. I stay home to watch: Breaking Bad, or Step Brothers. When I need luck for a big game, I: Listen to loud music, to pump me up, and remind myself that as long as I play my hardest, I’ve already won. The funniest person I’ve ever met (and why): I would say myself but.. Katie Elliott: Have you ever met someone who is exactly like you in every single way? Well that’s her and she never fails to make me crack up, even at the most inconvenient and inappropriate times. What they’ll say about me at school after I graduate: “Taylor Tieman? She was that girl with all the service hours who spent more time at the school then she did at her own house.” Most unforgettable moment: I have a few. Playing in regionals with varsity my sophomore year, making my first varsity goal, and of course freshman year when the F/S team decided to sticky note coach Gray’s entire truck one half day before practice. Ultimate sports fantasy: To meet, and maybe play a little with Abby Wambach, who I will be watching play in the FIFA Women’s World Cup this summer, so fingers crossed! What I would like to do in life: Next year I will be attending the University of Wisconsin - Platteville and majoring in forensic investigation. What I am really looking forward to in life is moving to somewhere warm (where it NEVER snows) and being able to help people through my future career Three words that best describe myself: Hilarious, intelligent and artistic.
