Have fun! No Foolin’ The annual Princeton Rotary Auction is set for Saturday, April 1, at The Galleria, located at 1659 N. Main St. in Princeton. The doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost $25, and all proceeds from the event go to community betterment. Event-goers can expect lots of food — complimentary hors d’oeuvres and drinks; plenty of fun; and lots of fastpaced bidding on a variety of auction items. There will be a live auction and a silent auction. To date, there are 56 live auction items and 30 silent auction items. Tom and Mary Tumbleson are the auctioneers. The Rotary will also conduct a 52-card raffle that evening, where event-goers can buy a card(s) for a chance to win a 55-inch Samsung Smart TV, donated by Walmart of Princeton. Cards for that raffle are $20, and you must be present to win. The TV retails for approximately $700. Tickets for the 2017 Princeton Rotary Cash Raffle will also be available. Tickets are $10 each or three tickets for $20. First prize is $1,000; second prize is $500; and third prize is $250. You do not need to be present to win for the cash raffle. BCHS prepares for Bill Lamb photography exhibit PRINCETON — In 2015, the Bureau County Historical Society received a monumental donation of photos, films and personal artifacts from the estate of renowned Princeton journalist and historian Bill Lamb. Following months of organizing and inventory efforts by the historical society staff and volunteers, selected photographs from the collection are being prepared for exhibition in Spring/ Summer 2017. Exhibit visitors can look forward to seeing original photos from around Princeton and around the United States taken by Lamb throughout many decades of the 20th Century. Also on display will be a feature of Lamb’s “Out of the Past” articles and historical photographs published in the Bureau County Republican during the 1990s and early 2000s. Photo buffs, historians and everyone else in the community will be able to view the breadth of Lamb’s body of work featured in upcoming exhi-

Band is a 30-piece brass and percussion ensemble formed in 2002 to promote the British brass band tradition with Chicago flair. The band, led by six-time NABBA championship conductor Colin Holman, has celebrated many achievements since its inception; in its first decade, the Chicago Brass Band has won the NABBA Championship, competed in the inaugural World Music Contest 2005 in The Netherlands (and again in 2013), par-

ticipated in the renowned Whit Friday Marches in England, and twice been a featured ensemble in front of 40,000 brass fans at the Great American Brass Festival. The band’s favorite activity, however, remains dazzling audiences in Chicago, one of the world’s premiere cities for brass musicianship. The band has particularly enjoyed recent performances with soloists drawn from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s celebrated brass section,

and Gene Pokorny. The international award-winning Chicago Brass Band

Lawn mower fundraiser is planned for April 8 PRINCETON — The Princeton Jaycees will host a lawn mower service fundraiser from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 8, at 1503 W. Peru St. in Princeton. This is a new location from previous years. The location is located directly across from Prescott Ford Dealership. Services will include blade sharpening, air filter cleaning, and deck and engine cleaning. The cost is $10 for push mowers. No riding mowers can be serviced. Musical tribute planned for April 4 SPRING VALLEY — Bill Jamerson, author, songwriter and filmmaker, will present “Dollar-A-Day Boys,” a musical tribute to the Civilian Conservation Corps, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, at the Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library, 215 E. Cleveland St. in Spring Valley. The program will be a fun, nostalgic look at the 1930s’ Federal Works Program that gave employment to 3.5 million men. It will include stories, foot tapping songs and a short video.

Audit/underemployed survey planned Over the next couple of months, Business Employment Skills Team Inc. (BEST Inc.) an affiliate of Northwest Illinois Central Works (NCI Works), and a partner of the American Jobs Center, in conjunction with Thomas P. Miller and Associates (TPMA), a workforce consulting firm, will be conducting a community audit and underemployed survey of the eight-county area that comprises BEST Inc. (Bureau, Carroll, Jo Daviess, LaSalle, Lee, Ogle, Putnam and Whiteside). This study will outline the current economic and workforce landscape of the region, a comprehensive assessment of educational opportunities, quality of life, commuting patterns, and other demographics. As part of this study, labor market information will be collected, analyzed, and summarized by individual county and collectively as a region. Surveys will be distributed to local employers to gauge their input of their business’ talent needs. Items that will be addressed in the survey include employment numbers and projections, skills needs and gaps, education and training needs, training challenges, and desired industry recognized credentials. The findings will tie together the three pillars that make up a strong and sustainable talent development system, education, workforce development, and economic development. Once completed, the findings of this study will be presented to the community in a State of the Workforce Event that will be scheduled for some time in late May. The public roll-out event will provide community stakeholders the opportunity to review the data collected and engage in a dialog with businesses, economic development, education, and workforce development in an effort to identify challenges and strategize solutions to address those challenges.

The course prepares applicants for the general written and road examinations, and also provides information on the vision screening. PPL will host stuffed animal slumber party on March 30 PRINCETON — The Princeton Public Library will host its spring Youth Services Family Reading event with a stuffed animal slumber party at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 30. In this case, it is the cuddly toys — not the children — who will be sleeping at the library, though they can dress up in pajamas if they would like. Young participants are asked to bring a stuffed animal (limit one per child) that is not afraid to be away from home overnight. Please do not bring a plush friend that needs to spend every night with a child. There will be a going-tobed-themed story time with music and action rhymes, then children

will select a picture book to read to their stuffed friend. After the stories, there will be a snack of milk and cookies before tucking the animals in for the night under a quilt, “hoping” that they won’t get into any after-hours shenanigans — though we know they will. Families may pick up their stuffed animal after noon on Friday, March 31, or on Saturday, April 1, and will receive a printed souvenir book of their animal’s library adventure. A musical tribute to the Civilian Conservation Corps SPRING VALLEY — Michigan based author Bill Jamerson will present a music and storytelling program about the Civilian Conservation Corps at the Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 4. The program is co-sponsored by the Spring Valley Historical Society and is free and open to the public. Jamerson’s hour-long program includes stories, showing a video clip from his PBS film, reading excerpts from his novel and singing original songs with his guitar. The Civilian Conservation Corps was a federal works program created by President Franklin Roosevelt in the heart of The Great Depression. During its nine year run from 1933 to 1942, more than 3 million young men between the ages of 17 and 25 years of age enlisted across the country. The CCC also built state parks, including Giant City, Fox Ridge, Kickapoo, White Pine, Mississippi Palisades, Illini and Matthiessen. The CCC also built the lodge at Starved Rock State Park, and did restoration work at Black Hawk State Historic Site and Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site. There was a CCC camp located near Henry where the men worked on dozens of farms in Putnam, LaSalle and Marshall County on soil erosion control projects. Their work included digging ponds, cleaning out ditches, putting out fertilizer and building earthen dams. The men came into nearby towns to patronize stores, movie theatres and bowling alleys. Jamerson’s novel, “Big Shoulders,” follows a year in the life of a 17-year-old youth from Detroit who enlists in the CCC in 1937. The enrollee joins 200 other young men at a work camp in Michigan’s Upper Pen-

insula. It is a coming-of-age story of an angry teenager who faces the rigors of hard work, learning to get along with a difficult sergeant and coping with a bully. Some of the songs performed in the program include “Chowtime,” a fun look at the camp food; “City Slicker,” which tells of the mischief the young men get into in the woods; “Wood Tick” is a song about the nicknames the locals gave the enrollees; and “Tree Plantin’ Fire Fightin’ Blues” tells of the hardships of work. In his talk, Jamerson will share many nostalgic stories he has picked up from former CCC Boys and also discuss their projects in Illinois. He will sign books after his talk. Wrestlers to benefit tornado relief

STREATOR— A pro wrestling show to benefit United Way tornado relief for Ottawa and Naplate will be June 3 at the Streator YMCA. Proceeds will benefit United Way Of Eastern LaSalle County in their efforts to help tornado victims recover and rebuild. The situation is especially personal for one of the wrestlers, who will be involved in this event. Tyler Marschang, known in the ring as Tyler Bodine, a board member at the Y and a wrestler for the RWF, tells about his a very personal connection to this disaster. “The two men who were tragically killed were members of my fiance, Lynn’s family. She would appreciate your support as would I,” he said. Tickets for the event, which include an appearance by Streator favorite and WWE Hall Of Fame member Cowboy Bob Orton, are moving fast.
