Fish fries return The St. Louis Catholic School’s Fish Fries will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. every Friday, from March 7 to April 11 during the Lenten season. Dinners include baked or fried fish, sides and a dessert. The cost of meals are $8 for adults and $5 for children. Carry-outs are available by calling 815-8728521. All proceeds from the dinners will benefit the school. Also, at each event, tickets for prizes will be available for purchase, which will be entered into a drawing for an IPad, Kindle Reader and $200 Bureau County Metro Center gift card. Flooding from ice jams and melting snow have affected some areas in the state. Eighteen to 24 inches of moving water can wash an SUV off of the road. In fact, according to the National Weather Service, more than half of all flood-related deaths are people driving through flooded roads. The nonprofit Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) reminds residents to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!” and offers the following safety tips to protect your home from costly flood damage. Before the flood All it takes is a few inches of water to cause major damage to your home and its contents. Clear yard of any debris, plant material or items (garden décor, foliage or garbage cans) that can block water flow and storm drains. If time permits, secure and/or elevate outdoor appliances, AC units or storage tanks. Analyze water flow through your yard and consider how water moves during a typical thunderstorm. Inspect critical areas (storm drains, culverts, berms, gutters and downspouts) to identify potential blockage to proper flow of water away from your home. Place important papers (birth/marriage certificates, passports, bank and insurance information) in a watertight container and keep them close. Take the container with you if evacuating or place in a high and dry location if sheltering in place. Take photographs or videos to create an inventory of your personal possessions and keep the camera card handy in case of evacuation. Don’t forget to open closets and drawers to document all of your belongings as they will become part of any potential insurance claim. Identify and move electronics and other expensive items (computers, televisions, phone systems, area rugs, expensive furniture) on lower levels of the home

Stay away from flood-prone areas, including dips, low spots, valleys, ditches, washes, etc. Avoid flooded areas or those with rapid water flow. Do not attempt to cross a flowing stream. It takes only 6 inches of fast flowing water to sweep you off your feet. Don’t allow children to play near high water, storm drains or ditches. Hidden dangers could lie beneath the water. Flooded roads could have significant damage hidden by floodwaters. Never drive through floodwaters or on flooded roads. Water only 1 foot deep can float most automobiles. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to see flooded roads. After the flood Take photographs of damage throughout the building and around the property. Assess stability of plaster and drywall. Bulging or swelling ceilings indicate damage. Press upward on drywall ceilings. If nail heads appear, drywall will need to be re-nailed but can be saved. Check foundation for any loose or missing blocks, bricks, stones or mortar. Empty basement water at a rate of about one-third per day to avoid structural damage to foundation by rapid pressure change. Clean and disinfect heating, air conditioning and ventilation ducts before use to avoid spread of airborne germs and mold spores. Use fans and sunlight to dry out interior spaces. We live in a world of constant, thin-sliced demands. Unanswered texts and emails. People waiting for you to say something, do something, read something, decide something. Run and hide. Lock yourself in your car or hunker down in a bathroom stall. Slow down and get your brain back. It’s all but impossible for your creative brain to operate when you’re responding to endless external stimuli. The best ideas often come when you run from your responsibilities. 3. Count to 20. Go somewhere where you can be undisturbed, bring a yellow pad and a pen, turn off your phone, and sit there until you come up with 20 ideas for solving your problem. This requires

discipline because most of us are so happy when we have one answer to a problem that we want to move to the next agenda item. Not every idea you invent will be a great one, but that’s OK. It may be idea No. 17 that’s truly brilliant, but you’d never get there if you ran back to your desk after you came up with one, two or even five ideas. If you do this daily, you’ll develop 100 new ideas a week. Imagine how strong your idea muscle will be! 4. Give up. Cardiologists recommend to heart patients that they visit nature, go to a museum, or attend a classical concert. Why? It slows them down and allows them to appreciate beauty instead of seeing life as a constant battle. Surrender your own siege mentality. Life isn’t war, thank goodness. Take a major step away, even for a couple of hours, from whatever battles you’re facing, contemplate the greatness of the human spirit or the wonder of nature, and reawaken the creative energy that our fightminded world suppresses.

Food court How about some recipes for ground beef? That meat is a favorite of mine, as you can do so much with ground beef. You can use it every night and always have something different.

Taco Tureen 1 1 1 1 1 1

pound ground beef medium onion, chopped small green pepper, chopped can Campbell’s beef broth can Campbell’s tomato soup can Campbell’s Golden Mushroom soup 1 28-ounce can Campbell’s pork and beans 1 soup can water 1 package taco seasoning mix In large saucepan, brown beef and cook onion and pepper until tender. Use shortening, if needed. Stir to separate meat. Pour off fat and add remaining ingredients. Simmer 10 minutes. Stir often. Makes 9 cups.

Stovetop Goulash 1 pound ground beef 1 16-ounce package frozen mixed vegetables, thawed 2 10 3/4-ounce cans condensed tomato soup, undiluted 1 cup water 1 small onion, chopped 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon garlic salt 1 teaspoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1 24-ounce package refrigerated mashed potatoes Cook beef in a large skillet over medium heat until no longer pink. Drain. Add mixed vegetables, soup, water, onion, Worcestershire sauce and seasonings. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, simmer, uncovered, 10 minutes or until slightly thickened. Serve on buns with cheese, relish and onion.

All Day Meatballs 1 cup milk 3/4 cup quick cooking oats 3 tablespoons onion, finely chopped 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 1/2 pounds ground beef 1 cup ketchup 1/2 cup water 3 tablespoons vinegar 2 tablespoons sugar In a large bowl, combine the first four ingredients. Combine and crumble beef over above mixture. Shape into 1-inch meatballs. Place in a 5-quart slow cooker. In small bowl combine ketchup, water, vinegar, water and sugar. Pour over meatballs. Cover and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours until meat is not longer pink.

Combine beef, 1 teaspoon salt and pepper. Shape into 6 patties. Place over onion mixture. Combine tomato juice, garlic, ketchup, Italian seasoning, bay leaf and remaining salt. Pour over patties. Cover and cook on low for 7 to 9 hours or until tender. Discard bay leaf. Serve patties on buns. Hello! I am James A. (Jim) Shipp, 58, of rural Princeton. I am currently Commander of the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office, and am seeking election to the Office of Bureau County Sheriff in 2014 on the Republican Party ticket. I am married to the former Deb Anderson of Ohio, IL. and have three children, Jamie (Shane) Pennington, Adam (Holly), and Sarah. I also have three grandchildren, Kelsey, Kailey and Matthew. I was born and raised in Bureau County and attended Hall High School. I began my public service at the age of 19 for 10/33 and Bureau ambulance service. I began my law enforcement career in 1977 for the Village of Bureau and graduated from the University of Illinois Police Training Institute in 1980. I was hired at the Bureau County Sheriff’s Department in 1981 by former Sheriff Mel Hult In addition to working full-time at the Bureau County Sheriff s Office in every capacity, I have worked as a part-time patrolman for the Village of Bureau (still holding the title of Chief of Police), 15 years for the Village of DePue (with the rank of Sergeant), and currently am in my 7th year as patrolman for the Village of Tiskilwa. I was elected President of Lodge 222 Fraternal Order of Police, a position I held for 11 years. I qualified and am a graduate (class of 2005) of the “Police Executive Role In the 21st Century” through the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board Executive Institute. I have over 2200 hours of ongoing law enforcement training through the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board, Police Training Institute, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Agency, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Illinois Emergency Management Agency and other organizations. I have also received several commendations from the Department and numerous individuals, agencies and organizations. During my career, I have also responded to and been actively involved with the Utica tornado, Euclid chemical fire in Sheffield, Tiskilwa train derailment, Washington tornado and the recent snow-bound Amtrak trains, to name a few. I have just completed my 18th year working security for St. Margaret’s Hospital and am the Operations Director in central Illinois for Illinois Security Services. I am also a Private Investigator for Petentler Investigations. I am currently involved in the following organizations/ agencies:

In no way will this affect the performance of the Sheriff’s Department. • I will personally opt out of the county retirement, therefore, saving the taxpayers their share of the county’s contribution. • Reduce overtime • Save vehicle maintenance and repair costs • I will increase patrol by reassigning personnel for vigilant patrol in rural areas and villages that do not have law enforcement and continue to work with villages that have police departments. • I will continue to support TRI-DENT (Tri-County Drug Enforcement Narcotics Team). • I will continue to support and finance the D.A.R.E. programs in the Bureau County Schools. • I will work with all law enforcement agencies by meeting with them to accomplish better communication and a working relationship. • One of my goals is to meet with the Village Mayors, Fire Chiefs, EMS Directors, and Township Officials at least once a year to discuss any concerns they may have, in addition to having an open-door policy to everyone. As a Bureau County taxpayer myself, I feel it is financially irresponsible to spend in excess of $20 thousand on my campaign. Therefore, if elected, I would donate that personal money back to the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office to purchase a new patrol car. Within the first minute after taking the oath for Bureau County Sheriff, I will be able to manage that office. I am the candidate who has worked, supervised, and commanded every aspect of the Sheriff’s Office. I AM THE ONLY CANDIDATE WITH 33 YEARS OF BUREAU COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE EXPERIENCE.
