Getting ‘Wired for Hope’ Simon, Horwitz co-author book By Terri Simon tsimon@bcrnews.com
Therapy, conservation, friendship, conversation, the written word — those are the elements Nedda Simon of rural Princeton and Pam Horwitz of rural Tiskilwa used to publish their first book, “Wired for Hope.” The story of how these two came to write a book is a chapter unto itself. Simon was Horwitz’s therapist several years ago. The two had many sessions, most which focused on recovery. Years passed, and the two reconnected through their passion for conservation. Simon was involved with Prairie River Resource Conservation and Development on a national level, and when she decided to step down, she recommended Horwitz. During that time, Horwitz sent Simon a poem on conservation. Simon’s reply? “You should publish this.” Perhaps that was the beginning of “Wired for Hope” — Horwitz’s love for writing poetry and Simon’s speeches she has given locally and throughout the country on vari-
ous topics, many pertaining to women. Simon is the founder of Freedom House, a domestic violence shelter. The words, “You should publish this,” fell by the wayside, until one day when Simon was having lunch at Horwitz’s 4&20 Cafe on Princeton’s South Main Street. The two reconnected, and readily admiring each other’s work, Simon asked Horwitz if she wanted to co-author a book. Beginning in the fall of 2015, the two met most every week — for many, many weeks. Horwitz gathered her poetry, and Simon found many of the speeches she had given and other items she had written throughout the years. “The whole idea was to enhance the lives of women and men too,” Simon said. “People go through hard times. This book could be a reference book in a way, for those who go from one struggle to another. How do you get through those times?” While working on their book, Horwitz said the pair identified the constant theme of their words and how they related to recov-

Nedda Simon (left) and Pam Horwitz ery. “We were always talking about hope,” Horwitz said. “Regardless of what we were talking about, there was a glimmer of hope.” “That’s one thing that is inherently built into a human being — hope,” Simon said, adding “Wired for Hope” is an opportunity for people to see another way on their journey through difficult times. The two agreed everyone is in recovery at some point in their lives — whether from an addiction, a situation, grief or any obstacle that crosses one’s path. They said they hope readers will be able to take something different
away from the experience every time they open the book. “This is not a cover-to-cover read,” Horwitz said. “Each essay or poem provides a snapshot of a place in time. It’s not a workbook, not a feel good book, not a daily inspiration book.” Simon said she hopes readers will be able to practice self-discovery as they read the book. “Women need to be their own person,” Simon said. Horwitz echoed those thoughts. “An important piece to this as well, is Nedda puts a tremendous amount of emphasis for women to
have a whole life, you must know who you are,” Horwitz said. “Yes, it’s all about self-discovery,” Simon said. The two finished the book in December 2016. Simon’s daughter, Julie

No need to pay for a movie rental when you can pick them up free at the library with a valid library card. Therapy Thursdays is ongoing at the library. DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. TISKILWA — On the first Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m., the library’s book club for adults meets. Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically. Cost is $5 per person. Bagpipes at Putnam County Library District STANDARD — J. Kevin Chapman will present a program at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, at the Standard Library Branch located inside of the community center. Chapman is a Piper on the Great Highland Bagpipes and has been playing for almost 30 years. He is featured at many solo events such as weddings, parties and other events. He plays the pipes both solo and formerly with the Shannon Rovers Pipe Band and currently with the Dundee Scottish Pipe Band. He also competes in solo piping competitions and band competitions. Chapman has played before four presidents, Pope John XXIII (23rd), Tip O’Neill, Cardinal George and both Mayor Daleys. Also, he is a graduate of the North American Piping School and the Balmoral School of Piping. Chapman will take you on a trip and introduce
you to the history of the pipes and present a narrative on the story behind one of the oldest instruments still played in the world. This will include a demonstration and display of the regalia surrounding the pipes.
Wind Ensemble gives free concert OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Community College Wind Ensemble’s free concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 2, in the Cultural Center will include the music of Gustav Holst, Malcolm Arnold, Steve Reineke, Robert Sheldon and Wilheim Zehle. The ensemble includes IVCC students, local and regional music educators, and community members dedicated to the promotion of quality wind and percussion music.
Commerce will host the Lunch in the Park lottery at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 2, in the Prouty Building. All businesses and organizations interested in having an opportunity to host Lunch in the Park will need to be present to participate. The 2017 Lunch in the Park season will run every Friday from the end of May until the end of September. Lunch in the Park is intended to raise money for non-profit organizations. Businesses and for-profit organizations may sign up to host a Lunch in the Park as long as they designate their profit for a specific non-profit organization. If you are unable to attend, any spots remaining will be filled on a firstcome, first-serve basis the following morning. Wells can provide high-quality drinking water, and about half the U.S. population receives its drinking water from wells. During National Groundwater Awareness Week, Bureau County residents can pick up the free kits Monday, March 6, through Friday, March 10, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Bureau County Farm Bureau building in Princeton or at the health department during their regular business hours. These test kits normally cost $15, but during this week they are being distrib-

After you have collected your sample, it must be mailed by overnight delivery to Springfield. Because testing is not done on the weekend, it is necessary to obtain and mail the sample on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. The water sample must be received in Springfield within 30 hours of being collected. The charge for overnight delivery is approximately $10. Results of the water samples will be sent back to the health department, where they will analyze the results and pass them along to those testing their water. For more information about the water samples and what they are testing for, please contact the health department.
