GRANVILLE — Life is often quiet and simpler in small rural towns, yet war has consistently disrupted that life. Many men from our small towns and farms have left to fight for our country, and while some didn’t return, those who did have never forgotten what they’ve experienced. A local author has recently published a collection of their stories titled, “Uncommon Valor was a Common Virtue: Stories of Everyday People at War.” Darrell Alleman of Granville began writing veteran stories in 2005 after being asked by the newspaper to profile a local Vietnam veteran for Memorial Day. “I’d been writing stories for many years for the Granville Rotary, as well as for the Marshall-Putnam Fair and the Putnam County Republican Party,” Alleman said. A local Vietnam veteran had recently shared his story with the Granville Rotary, so Alleman immediately knew who to approach. “I’ve always had the greatest respect for all veterans,” Alleman said. “I felt good after writing that story, so I started interviewing more and more veterans, but I’d never thought about writing a book.” Alleman’s wife, Jeanne, who edited his writing, provided the needed encouragement to turn the 317 short stories into a book. He said many of his friends are veterans, and while not a veteran himself, he said they often joke he’s one of them. “I was married in January of 1951 and received my draft notice in March.

Korea was very active then. We were living in Tonica at the time, and all the Tonica boys went off to war, and I was the only one sent home,” Alleman said. Rheumatic fever at age 14 had left him with a heart murmur and diabetes. “I was called up twice more and eventually received a 4-F card which was terribly embarrassing. I would’ve liked to have gone, but I would’ve hated to leave my wife too,” he said. Alleman has spent his entire life within a 14-mile area between Tonica and Granville. He farmed the same land near Magnolia for 49 years before moving back to Granville, and he knows the area and its people well. He said, “The common thread in all these stories is they’re all ordinary people, just like you and I, but they left their homes and families for years, and some never came back.” He also said he’s seen no differences in the veterans from World War II up to the modern conflicts of Iraq and Afghanistan, saying, “Everyone said, ‘War is hell,” and there isn’t one who doesn’t fly the flag at their home because they’ve all seen their friends die in war. They’ve all seen so much, and I’m very thankful to them for sharing their stories with me.” Alleman said he’s been approached by the Putnam County Library to present a program about his collected stories, and while he hasn’t confirmed yet, he’s considering it. Area athletes participate in Special Olympics MTM Recognition is chosen vendor for all awards PRINCETON — The Special Olympics Illinois, Area 16 – Starved Rock held its annual winter games at Bureau County Fairgrounds on Jan. 7. More than 100 athletes participated in snowshoeing events, and volunteers came from multiple counties. Special Olympics is a global organization that unleashes the human spirit through the transformation of power and joy of the sport, every day around the world. Area 16 – Starved Rock encompasses Henry, Stark, Bureau, Putnam, Marshall, LaSalle and Grundy counties. Allison Nichols, area director, couldn’t stop saying how much she loved her job, the Special Olympic events being her favorite part. Nichols coordinates all the events, venues, sponsorships, volunteers, athletes and more for Area 16. Nichols is always looking for volunteers for these events. Jim Arbet travels to almost every location to hand-engrave the medals (MTM Recognition is the chosen vendor of Special Olympics for all awards). Sarah Nestler helps at many events as a first-aid and “911 decision maker.”

Athletes race toward the finish line at the Special Olympics Winter Games held at the Bureau County Fairgrounds in Princeton. Longtime Special Olympics volunteer, Dawn Dabler, said,“Special Olympics is my passion.” It was seen throughout the day as she helped every athlete, fellow volunteer and knew all their names.

All the athletes showed exemplary pride, sportsmanship and camaraderie. There are more than two dozen events for athletes to participate in, including snowshoeing, cross country skiing, equestrian, golf,

basketball, volleyball, tennis and more. Upcoming events include Area Basketball Individual Skills in Granville (Jan. 21) and District Basketball in Byron (Jan. 29). The major fundraiser for Area 16, the Polar Plunge fundraiser, is

Tim Grimm and the Family Band will perform Jan. 21 at Princeton Coffeehouse PRINCETON — Tim Grimm and the Family Band will perform at the Princeton Coffeehouse at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21. The coffeehouse is located at Open Prairie United Church of Christ, 25 E. Marion St. in Princeton. Doors will open at 7 p.m. The Indiana-based Grimm has, for the past 15 years, blended his love for songwriting with travel and the storytelling of acting (theatre, film and television). His song, “King of the Folksingers,” on his most recent recording, “The Turning Point,” was the No. 1 song on Folk radio in 2014. It’s a tribute to Grimm’s friend and the musical icon, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott. Grimm’s history with Ramblin’ Jack goes back 30 years — beginning with a bicycle ride that led to The Newport Folk Festival. Grimm contributed liner notes to Elliott’s Grammy winning album, The South Coast (1995). After college and some regional touring, Grimm settled in Chicago for a spell. He studied briefly at the Old Town School of Folk Music and began writing songs and performing. He also released two albums. In the 1990s, he largely gave up his musical ventures and took a detour to Los Angeles, where he worked in television and film. After a decade, he returned home to southern Indiana. It was a conscious choice, as he saw it, to “live a life of significance rather than one of success.” He now lives with his wife on 80 acres close to where he grew up. Grimm’s songs are full of the rural rumblings that have shaped his life. He released the album, “Heartland,” in 2000, and on the strength

IVCC softball clinic OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Community College softball team will host the 18th annual IVCC Eagles Softball Clinic Feb. 18-19 in IVCC’s gym. Coaches and current players will offer softball instruction in hitting, bunting, fielding, throwing, base running and communication. There will be two sessions each day. On Saturday, Feb. 18 participants in grades 2-4 will meet from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Participants in grades 5-8 will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Sunday, Feb. 19 grades 2-4 will meet from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with grades 5-8 meeting from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Cost of the clinic is $30 per player and includes five hours of instruction and a clinic T-shirt. Pack the Place Pink at LaMoille

LAMOILLE — Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton will sponsor a “Pack the Place Pink Night” on Monday, Jan. 23, at the LaMoille/Ohio girls basketball game. In recognition of breast cancer awareness, Perry Memorial Hospital and LaMoille High School are teaming together to show support for both the Lady Lions and breast cancer survivors. According to the Susan Komen Foundation, it is estimated that in 2015 there was over 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women and in men, as well. Getting regular mammogram screening tests is the best

way to lower your risk of dying from breast cancer. Screening tests can find breast cancer early, when it’s most treatable. This “Pack the Place Pink Night” event is being held at LaMoille High School with the JV game starting at 5:30 p.m., and the varsity game to start at 7 p.m. Those that wear pink to the game will have the opportunity to register for a door prize. In addition, PMH will be giving out educational materials regarding breast cancer and the importance of selfbreast exams.

SPRING VALLEY — Hall High School Baseball will be hosting a hitting clinic featuring former professional player and internationally known hitting instructor, Mark Doran.
