The Closet gives back Second-hand shop working on its second million By Goldie Rapp grapp@bcrnews.com
PRINCETON — Church Women United of Princeton raised $110,700 through The Closet throughout 2016; that money was distributed to 29 non-profit organizations during a gathering recently at the second hand shop. Throughout the years, The Closet has donated more than $1 million back to its community and is working on its second million, due to overwhelming generosity of many who donate what they can no longer use. Along with just a few paid employees, The Closet has been able to maintain between 90 to 100 volunteers who help make it possible for donations to average $115,000 annually in recent years. The Closet opened in 1968 as a way to assist migrant workers and their families, as well as constriction workers who were building Interstate 80. Today, the shop benefits innumerable people with gently-used clothing, household items, furniture, books and toys at very reasonable prices.

Aside from serving the area as a second hand shop, The Closet also services local people in need,
such as victims of fires, who receive clothing and necessary goods at no cost. Many items from The Closet are also provided to area nursing homes and churches, and vouchers are given to individuals referred to the shop by a number of agencies. The 29 organizations

Zimmerlein awarded Illinois Farm Bureau Eagle Award for Excellence CHICAGO — Lee County’s Eleanor Zimmerlein was one of two recipients of the 2016 Illinois Farm Bureau (IFB) Eagle Award for Excellence. Through the IFB Eagle Award for Excellence, IFB recognizes an individual or organization for excellence on issues or programs important to Farm Bureau and to agriculture on a statewide and/or national basis. The award was presented during IFB’s annual meeting held in Chicago Dec. 3-6. Zimmerlein, a retired farmer from LaMoille, has been actively involved in agriculture and the Illinois Farm Bureau for nearly three decades, serving as an ACTIVATOR Trustee, Grassroots Issues Team member, on the Lee County Farm Bureau Governmental Affairs Committee, and as a member of FB Act. Most recently, Zimmerlein participated in Illinois Farm Bureau’s effort to collect petition signatures for the Independent Map Amendment Coalition, personally collecting more than 1,000 signa-
tures. Zimmerlein also served as legislative chair of the Illinois Agri-Women and served on the Ag Environmental Alliance and Ag Roundtable. In 1996, Zimmerlein received the American Agri-Women LEAVEN Award and was inducted into the Illinois Agri-Women Hall of Fame in 2014. “Eleanor is truly deserving of this award,” stated Danelle Burrs, Lee County Farm Bureau manger. “Eleanor has devoted years of service to Farm Bureau and agriculture, and remains active today. We are proud of all that she has accomplished.” Zimmerlein is a graduate of Mendota High School and Illinois Valley Community College and is still actively involved in her family’s farming operation. A move of faith Neponset United Methodist Church moves to a new home By Dave Cook dcook@bcrnews.com
NEPONSET — While a church is often the symbolic representation of a parish, it’s the parishioners themselves which create the important sense of community. With this in mind, the Neponset United Methodist Church has moved to a new home after more than 100 years. The old building, dedicated in 1912, served the parish reliably, but time has caught up with it. The estimated repair costs, along with accessibility problems, has prompted a move to the Neponset Community Building. Pastor Rebecca Klemm said, “There were many things prompting the change. The current building isn’t handicap accessible, and several of our members are struggling to get up and down the stairs each week. We want to be hospitable and provide a welcome for everyone in the community, and our current building makes that impossible.” Along with the impractical expenses associated with improving accessibility, the building has mold, cracks in the walls and peeling plaster. Klemm said if the congregation tried to repair the building, they would soon cease to exist as a congregation due to lack of funds. Klemm, pastor since July 2015, said,
“We’ve been working toward this decision from almost the minute I arrived.” It’s yet to be decided what will be done with the old building, but Klemm was certain as to what she doesn’t want to see happen, saying, “We haven’t ruled out selling it, but we want to make sure it doesn’t become run down and abandoned like so many other buildings.” Klemm added it may be helpful for the congregation to tear it down and hang on to the land with a goal of rebuilding a smaller, single-story, multi-purpose building. She also said there’s even been talk of having a community garden on the land. While the original building has been in decline, Klemm has helped the congregation to grow and hopes that will continue in the future. “There is definitely something worth saving in this congregation. Approximately 50 percent of those who attend on Sunday also gather for midweek Bible study. In spite of limited finances, the church gives generously to various missions. There is a depth of spirituality here that I have rarely seen in churches I have served,” Klemm said. As of Jan. 8, the services for the Neponset United Methodist Church will be held at 8:30 a.m. in the Neponset Community Building located at 201 W. Commercial St.. Cold, dry December ends a warm year in Illinois CHAMPAIGN — The statewide average temperature for December was 28.6 degrees, 1.3 degrees below normal, according to Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel,. December precipitation was light and below normal across most of Illinois, except for far southern Illinois. The statewide average precipitation was 1.41 inches, 1.28 inches below normal. The largest reported precipitation total in December was 6.03 inches in Rosiclare in Hardin County. December snowfall was
absent in far southern Illinois and increased northward. Only northern Illinois received above-normal snowfall. The largest monthly snowfall total was 24.3 inches in Bull Valley in McHenry County. For the year 2016, the statewide average temperature was 54.7 degrees, 2.4 degrees above normal and the fifth warmest year on record. Temperatures were above normal in 10 out of 12 months. The only two months that were colder than normal were May and December. The statewide average

precipitation for 2016 was 39.63 inches, 0.33 inches below normal. Eight out of the 12 months had below-normal precipitation. The year would have been dry except for the record rainfall in July and August. Annual precipitation was highest in southern Illinois and lowest in western Illinois. In fact, much of western Illinois received precipitation of several inches below normal for the year. The most precipitation reported in Illinois for 2016 was 60.46 inches at Rosiclare in Hardin County.

PRINCETON — Gateway Services of Princeton was recently awarded a $1,000 grant through Princeton Walmart. The grant was for local community contribution and will help Gateway’s Philanthropic Development Committee expand job opportunities related to its pollinator garden for the clients served, as well as non-disabled individuals. As previously reported, Gateway has been looking for ways to open its doors and become more inviting to the community. The garden offers possibilities for getting the public involved. One way is that it could serve as an education opportunity for students. Gateway plans to invite schools to the garden to learn about the importance of native pollinators and how they are vital to agriculture. Gateway is located at 406 S. Gosse Boulevard in Princeton.

St. Margaret’s Hospital welcome first baby of 2017 IVCH welcomes first baby of 2017 St. Margaret’s Hospital welcomed its first baby of 2017. Weighing 8 pounds, 13 ounces and measuring 21 inches in length, Maddux Joseph Hamer was welcomed into this world at 12:57 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 1. He is the son of Teresa Gleason and Jay Hamer of Tiskilwa and joins siblings Taylor, Bailey, Garrett and Travis. The new arrival was delivered by board certified OB/GYN physician Dr. Norah Toraason.
The first baby to be born at Illinois Valley Community Hospital in 2017 arrived at 1:40 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 1, when Michele Hanson of Earlville gave birth to a girl. Brynn Cadence Hanson entered the world weighing 6 pounds, 4 ounces. She was 19 1/2-inches in length. The child is the first for Hanson and her husband, Brent. The new mom is an IVCH employee, a systems support specialist in the information systems department. Brent Hanson is a paramedic with the Peru Volunteer Ambulance Service.

PERU — The St. Bede Academy Bruins baseball team will hold a spring training clinic in March for boys ages 6-14 (through eighth grade). Hall hosts hitting clinic
SPRING VALLEY — Hall High School Baseball will be hosting a hitting clinic featuring former professional player and internationally known hitting instructor, Mark Doran. Pack the Place Pink at LaMoille
LAMOILLE — Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton will sponsor a “Pack the Place Pink Night” on Monday, Jan. 23, at the LaMoille/Ohio girls basketball game. In recognition of breast cancer awareness, Perry Memorial Hospital and LaMoille High School are teaming together to show support for both the Lady Lions and breast cancer survivors. According to the Susan Komen Foundation, it is estimated that in 2015 there was over 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women and in men, as well. Getting regular mammogram screening tests is the best way to lower your risk of dying from breast cancer. Screening tests can find breast cancer early, when it’s most treatable. This “Pack the Place Pink Night” event is being held at LaMoille High School with the JV game starting at 5:30 p.m., and the varsity game to start at 7 p.m. Those that wear pink to the game will have the opportunity to register for a door prize. In addition, PMH will be giving out educational materials regarding breast cancer and the importance of selfbreast exams.

MCNABB — The “Fat 50” 50-kilometer run will be Saturday, Jan. 14, with a start time of 9 a.m. The race will start and finish at Putnam County Junior High School in McNabb. The slightly rolling course is a one-mile loop to the east followed by three out and back runs of 10 miles. Showers are available. Pizza will be served following the run. Princeton Park District Update
PRINCETON — Registration is underway for the indoor adult soccer league sponsored by the Princeton Park District. Games will be held Sundays at 12:30 p.m. at the Bureau County Metro Center through Jan. 22. Cost is $200 per team. Sign-ups are also being held for the adult volleyball league.
