In October 2014, I was diagnosed with a very rare form of head and neck cancer. I, so far, have gone through two surgeries and eight weeks of radiation and chemotherapy treatments. On June 6th, my family and friends united together and had a benefit dinner and auction to help support me and my family. In the months following my diagnosis, we received so much support from everyone with the cards, care packages, well wishes and prayers. We were already overwhelmed by the love and support received (especially from those we had never even met!) but after the benefit, we have truly been humbled. For weeks leading up to the event, so many worked countless hours planning, organizing, and asking for donations. The building was packed full of people showing their genuine love and support and for that we will be forever grateful. To the outstanding number of businesses and people in the surrounding counties that donated-THANK YOU! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you! So much generosity was shown and you didn’t even think twice about donating something for the dinner or auction. To the family and friends that worked so hard making sure the benefit was such a success-we will never forget the kindness and selflessness you have shown. It’s definitely not easy to put on such an event, but you all pulled through and made it look effortless! To all of you wonderful people that took time away from your busy lives to show your support-you are truly amazing. Many of you traveled a great distance to make it or gave up other plans so that you could be there. We hope you all know just how much you mean to us. After college, we decided to move to Des Moines, but it is after such a misfortune we have experienced and after seeing how much a community sticks together to support one another, it is no surprise that small town Iowa is where it’s at! People are good and have such big hearts and the support system of friends and family has lifted me up in ways I never thought possible. Although we no longer call Osceola our home, our hearts will always be there!
