In 1994 the nation’s cow herd was decreasing and the cattle feeding industry had concentrated. Just adding pay weight and carcass quality were not enough. Our bull customers needed sale prices that reflected not only their dave nichols genetic inputs, but the healthy, vaccinated, and problem free feeder calves that hit the feedlot gaining. I hired Ross Havens primarily to keep our commercial cow/calf customers in business. Our first genetic source feeder auction added $65 per head when fiveweight steer calves were selling for $55 — $58 cwt. Since that sale we’ve sold about 60,000 calves in Nichols Genetic Source Auctions. We out grew our start up model and have transitioned to working with a multitude of auction barns and video auctions across the mid-west and high plains. And we do it without collecting a cent of commission from anyone! At the December “Green Tag Sale” at the Creston Livestock Auction, over 1,000 Nichols sired calves weighed more and sold higher than “popular brand X” calves. The Nichols steers weighed 128 lbs more and the heifers 92 lbs. Both sold higher within their weight. range. Make no mistake— cross breeding, true performance, and the reputation of the Nichols Brand were key.

Main Street Iowa and the Iowa Economic Development Authority are excited to announce a new program to help business development efforts in Iowa’s Main Street districts around the state! The 2nd Annual OPEN 4 BUSINESS Competition is a chance for you to grow your business idea in your local Main Street district. Think Shark Tank – Main Street style! Here’s how it works: • Business must be located within the designated Main Street district. • Business can be a new start-up or an existing business planning an expansion. • Business must be a for-profit business. Business should fill a gap that currently exists within your Main Street district. • Business will be required to complete a paper application, judging criteria, and budget sheet (all included and on our website) and make a 15 minute “sales” pitch about their business to a panel of local judges from the Osceola Chamber Main Street Business Improvement Committee. Sales pitch may include a PowerPoint presentation, samples, and props if desired. Be creative and have fun! • Applications are due to the OCMS office by 5pm on Friday, April 29th. Entrants will learn of the local presentation date closer to time. • Osceola Chamber Main Street will choose one of the local businesses from the sales pitch to represent the program at the regional level. • Each program will be assigned a regional site to attend. Regional pitches will be held June 13-16, 2016. Regional pitches are closed to the general public. State pitches will be open to the public. • Regional winners will receive $8,000 and advance to the state competition. Regional winners will be assigned a coach to help prepare for state competitions. • Statewide contest pitches will be on August 2, 2016 in Mason City. • State winner receives an additional $20,000! Summer Youth Program Position Open The Clarke County Extension office is currently accepting applications for our Summer AmeriCorps Youth Program members. Responsibilities include organizing and facilitating the Clarke County Summer Day Camps, assist with the Clarke County Fair activities and events, and organize the annual Mike Van Ahn Memorial Fishing Derby. Members will complete 450 hours from May 1st through August 31st and will receive a living stipend in the amount of $3,317 and an education award in the amount of $1,515. Members will be housed in the Clarke County Extension Office. This is a great summer opportunity for a high school or college students. Applicants must be at least 17 years of age.
