Head lice are light brown insect parasites about 1/8 inch in length that feed on human blood. They are usually most concentrated in the hair along the neck and can be spotted with a magnifying glass. Head lice cannot jump, therefore are only spread by direct contact. Nits are tiny, yellow, oval eggs which attach themselves firmly to the hair follicle near the scalp and are easily mistaken for dandruff. Non-prescription preparations can be used to kill the lice and nits. A couple of days after using an overthe-counter medication, you should remove the nits from the hair with a fine tooth comb. You must also wash all clothing and bedding that the infected person has come in contact with to make sure you get rid of all the nits. Lice and nits cannot live very long when they are not in contact with human flesh, but it is best to take precautions to prevent re-infection. Prepare pancakes by placing pancake mix into mixing bowl; add milk and egg. Stir in vegetable oil. Mix until just blended. Let stand for 5 minutes. Preheat griddle or large skillet to 360 degrees. Grease lightly with Hy-Vee cooking spray. Griddle is ready when small drops of water sizzle and disappear almost immediately. Pour ¼ cup batter for each pancake onto the hot griddle, adding 2 separate spoonfuls additional batter to form “reindeer ears.” Cook 1 to 1-½ minutes and flip when edges appear cooked and bubbles form throughout the pancake. Cook additional 1 to 1-½ minutes on opposite side. Pour 1/8 cup onto griddle to form smaller pancake for reindeer face. Repeat cooking instructions of step 3.
