Only one motivation makes sense to the actress. “Just do it for the love of being part of theater,” she said.

ADDISON – Addison native Marisa Boynton has acted everywhere from Chicago to a cruise ship on the open sea to London, but her most recent role is still a first for her. Boynton plays Sandra Bloom, the wife of traveling salesman Edward Bloom who is known for his larger-thanlife stories, in the Jedlicka Performing Arts Center’s production of “Big Fish.” “This is the first time I’ve played a mother on stage,” Boynton said. Luckily, she has three years experience as a real-life mother. Boynton’s son, Henry, is almost 3, but in the musical, her character’s son, Will Bloom, is a grown man who’s about to become a parent himself. While Boynton hasn’t yet experienced what it’s like to be the mother of an adult child, the musical and her everyday role as mom has gotten her thinking about it. “It’s nice to think about what that will be like as I get to experience those things,” Boynton said. The story is more about a father-son relationship, though. Will, on the verge of fatherhood, is determined to

Joseph Alonso Pleasure, 20, and Alan Lavelle Ross Jr., 17, both of Hammond, Ind., were charged with attempted murder, attempted robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, aggravated battery, attempted armed robbery and battery resulting in serious bodily injury, according to an affidavit submitted Wednesday to the Lake County, Ind., Superior Court. The mother, who was taken to an area hospital, sustained gunshot wounds during the attempted robbery to her right hand and arm, which will require reconstructive surgery to her hand and may result in the loss of part of her hand, the

structed her, according to the affidavit. The woman told police when she arrived at the meeting place, the man told her to pull into an alley south of Highland Street. At that time, the woman said she felt afraid when she saw two men walking up behind her car, so she began to pull away. One of the men yelled, “Stop, I have your phone,” and the other demanded her money, threatening to shoot her and her kids, the document stated. The woman told police the second man, later identified as Ross, shot at her car before walking to the other side of her car to shoot at her daughters, according to the document. The older daughter told police when the shooter ran back to his friend, her mother drove away looking for help but eventually passed out. Their car went into an empty parking lot where the 15-year-old put the car in park and moved her mom’s foot off the gas pedal, the document stated. Using Facebook, Hammond police identified Pleasure, who confessed he had arranged to sell cellphones to a woman through the “Cashin Out Jo” Facebook account. He eventually told police he and Ross had agreed after the robbery Pleasure would get his phone back along with the money and Ross would get whatever else the woman had, according to the document. The mother identified Ross as the man who shot her and her daughters and Pleasure as the other man involved, the affidavit stated.

GLENDALE HEIGHTS – The attorney representing a DuPage County Board candidate involved in a domestic dispute earlier this year expects to see remaining charges stemming from the incident dismissed in the coming months. In April, the state of Wisconsin charged District 4 Democratic candidate Jeremy Custer, 26, of Glendale Heights, with disorderly conduct, criminal damage to property and resisting or obstructing an officer. In an email to Suburban Life Media, Custer’s attorney Marcus Berghahn said Custer waived his right to a trial and pleaded guilty to two of the three charges: disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property. The resisting charge was dismissed outright at a hearing July 22. The case was suspended before the court could find Custer guilty, and as long as he is not charged with any further criminal offense, the two remaining charges he pleaded guilty to will be dismissed in about nine months, Berghahn said. “This is a common and usu-

al resolution in our courts,” he said in the email. Custer’s charges date back to April 15, when he was arrested in Madison, Wis., after he was involved in an argument with his girlfriend. He allegedly knocked over a bookshelf and yelled. “I’ve learned from this incident, accepted responsibilities for my actions and hope to move forward as a wiser person,” Custer said. The candidate said he and his girlfriend still are together. Custer will stay in the race for the DuPage County Board District 4 seat against incumbent Grant Eckhoff, and he said he hopes this incident won’t stop him from serving the residents of his district, which primarily encompasses portions of Carol Stream, Glendale Heights, Glen Ellyn, Lombard and Wheaton. The chief of staff for state Sen. Tom Cullerton, D-Villa Park, Custer defeated M. Moon Khan in the Democratic primary in March.

It will mark the foundation’s first capital project campaign, she said. “Most of the things you do socially tend to involve food,” Linford said. “And because this is the home of our residents, we want to make sure that this environment ... is a real home atmosphere.” Berman said the foundation allows the center to create a less institutional atmosphere. The fundraising arm has helped provide TV sets, decor, outings and hopes to bring in a music therapy teacher in the coming months. “The foundation helps with our ‘nice-to-dos,’ ” she said. “It’s a really different opportunity where we can really enhance a quality of life, come in and really support our community. We have staff come in each and every day and give their time and effort, but sometimes you need money to do those extra things.”

WHEATON – More than 125 years ago, a farm in Wheaton began a transformation from an alms house where transient workers found short-term jobs to a tuberculosis asylum to a long-term nursing facility. The DuPage Convalescent Center still remains on the property where it was established in 1888, but has expanded from its humble roots – from a handful of beds for those who resided on the farm – to a 368bed capacity. “There was a need in the community,” said assistant administrator Shauna Berman. “Because these individuals really didn’t have a place to go. It was a way for the community to support their health care needs.” With four interconnected buildings across its campus, the center serves a portion of society that is particularly in need. Berman said generally the residents are in their later years and have health issues that have rendered them unable to care for themselves. More than three-quarters are on some form of public aid, she said, and all lived in the county or have strong residential ties. The center is funded annually by federal subsidies, public aid and $2.4 million in county money, which covers its basic operational and capital needs, Berman said. To pay for supplementary programming and other projects, it established the nonprofit DuPage Convalescent Center Foundation in 1993. “Though housing, food and basic needs are covered, those things that make us all human – quality of life things – aren’t covered,” said foundation coordinator Linda Linford. “We

Bridge Communities partnership gives new shoes to kids in need When a homeless family becomes part of Bridge Communities, their lives are transformed in major ways. They’re moved into a safe, stable apartment; they receive weekly mentoring from dedicated volunteers; and they’re connected to tutors, employment coaches and community programming for their entire family. We also realized sometimes it’s the little things that matCOMMUNITY ter just as much. For others, it’s seeing their child start to smile again after settling into a routine. Part of Bridge’s mission is helping restore our families’ confidence and dignity after going through the traumas of homelessness, which is why we’ve partnered with the Gotta Have Sole Foundation. The organization was started in 2010 by a teenager named Nicholas Lowinger, who was inspired after learning many children in a local homeless shelter didn’t have shoes that fit properly or had to miss school frequently because they only had one pair of shoes to share among their siblings. He started to collect gently used shoes to donate, then new shoes. His dream became a foundation, and they now have given free, new shoes to more than 10,000 homeless children across America. Now, children in Bridge Communities will be recipients of the program as well. Our Bridge Builders volunteer group already has measured the feet of about 50 children for shoes, and we expect to measure about 40 more this summer. The kids will each receive a new pair of gym shoes in time for the upcoming school year, and everyone will get a new pair of socks from a collection drive conducted by Baird & Warner’s Glen Ellyn office as well. A new pair of back-to-school shoes may be something we and our kids take for granted, but for many Bridge families, it means stability and normalcy. It’s something that may be difficult to work into the budget when a family is trying to make ends meet and save for the future. We’re grateful to organizations like Gotta Have Sole for helping Bridge families take a step in a better direction.

ELMHURST – For Cheryl Cummings, the tombstones covering her lawn don’t simply represent the 100 drug overdose deaths that occur every day across the country. On Oct. 14, 2012, her son, Cheryl Spencer, became Cummings one of those 100 deaths when he overdosed on heroin at 40 years old. “I don’t want other people to go through what I’m going through,” Cummings said. “Education is the only way to do that.” She decided to host the traveling tombstones in front of her home at 422 N. Addison Ave. as part of the Stop Overdose Illinois awareness campaign leading up to organization’s Overdose Awareness Gathering and Vigil later this month. “People just think that stuff doesn’t happen here,” Cummings said. Cassandra Wingert, co-coordinator of the overdose awareness event, explained the traveling tombstones combat what she called “not-inmy-backyard syndrome,” by literally making a statement in people’s front lawns. The tombstones began traveling the Chicago suburbs last month, stopping in neighborhood front lawns, public events and municipal buildings. “It definitely makes a statement in all types of communities,” Wingert said, explaining drug overdoses happen everywhere. In fact, Wingert said the number of overdose deaths are increasing. The tombstones began as a statement piece a few years ago at Roosevelt University for the annual overdose awareness event. Now, she said overdose deaths are up to 105 a day across the country. “It’s not only heroin. It’s the painkillers. It’s the Vicodin,” Cummings said. She said her son’s addiction

Those prescription drugs are just as deadly, though, Wingert warns. “People don’t understand the connection between opiate prescription drugs and opiate street drugs such as heroin,” Wingert said. Wingert said the perception that addiction is a criminal activity often discourages people from admitting they’re addicted or seeking help. “I think if people saw it as a health issue they would start recognizing it as the epidemic it is,” Wingert said. Cummings believes despite recent attention to the presence of heroin in Chicago’s suburb, many people don’t want to admit opiate addiction exists in Elmhurst or other communities. “The suburbs still don’t realize that a drug addict is not someone in a crack house,” Cummings said. Through a support group, Cummings has heard stories and seen photos of those who have died of drug overdoses, many of whom she described as nice kids who had everything.

“It’s a matter of saving people’s lives, and we can only do that with education,” Wingert said. Cummings hopes people passing by her home while the tombstones are there are motivated to learn more about not only preventing drug addiction but how to save lives. “My son would be alive today if the girl he was with wasn’t afraid of repercussions of her own drug use,” Cummings said. She wants to spread awareness about Illinois’ Good Samaritan law, which encourages people to call 911 when someone is overdosing by providing some protection from criminal drug charges. Cummings also wants to encourage people to learn about Naloxone, also called Narcan, which reverses heroin and prescription opiate overdoses. Anyone can be trained to use Naloxone. Naloxone training, recovery resources and educational information will be available at the awareness gathering and vigil. “The core of it is that we want to prevent people from dying,” Wingert said.

Main St. The annual AAUW fundraiser draws book collectors and individuals looking for their favorite authors and titles. “A lot of people will come in with a list of books they’re looking for or a favorite author,” said Driscoll of Carol Stream. “We have a lot of books that you probably can’t find on digital [format] yet.” The Lombard chapter of AAUW has been hosting the annual sale for about three decades. The group typically receives roughly 15,000 books, and this year was no exception. “We have books in all different categories,” Driscoll said. “We have a lot of music books, especially jazz, this year. It’s amazing how many books we get.” The organization has been collecting books from the community for a month, utilizing book barrels placed at various locations in the community, as well as hosting “Drive up – Drop off” times. The final collection times are from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Church of Lombard. “We get a lot of the books from people cleaning out their houses,” Driscoll said. Proceeds from the book sale will go toward three local scholarships – one each for an incoming senior at Glenbard East and Willowbrook high

Funds also go to the national AAUW fund and are used to support grants. The book sale kicks off Wednesday night and is held primarily for local book dealers who buy large amounts of obscure titles, Driscoll said. A $10 cover charge will be applied. From Thursday through Saturday, there is no admission fee. Most books range from 50 cents to $5, with some rare titles more expensive. From 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and all day Saturday, patrons can pay $10 and take as many books as will fit in the allotted bag. The organization is working hard to organize titles alphabetically by author to make it easier for patrons to find titles, Driscoll said. The popularity of the annual event proves that people are still interested in reading the printed word in its traditional form. “A lot of the titles are just slowly being released online,” Driscoll said. “This is a nice way to browse and find things they haven’t even thought of wanting to read – and they’re inexpensive.”

Oak Brook Pinstripes offers ‘sophisticated fun’ OAK BROOK – A luxurious reimagining of restaurant and bowling alley is at the playful heart of Pinstripes. On a recent Sunday evening, we discovered it to be home to three B’s: a tempting bistro, indoor and outdoor bocce ball courts, and upscale bowling lanes. Situated on the perimeter of Oakbrook Center, the expansive two-story building extends to private party spaces and patios landscaped for privacy, and boasting a water feature, fire pits and flaming torches that bring all the elements together for a fun night out as a couple or with friends and family. Kids and adults will find bocce ball an easy game to pick up, and parents will relish the younger set having a ready diversion. But games are optional, because dining at Pinstripes is an attraction in itself. The patio full, we sat in the all-season section outside the attractive bistro with its stone and wood decor and eye-catching wine cellar to complement the craft beer selection. We were under a roof, but the walls – giant glass garage doors – were open to a beautiful summer night. Later on, with cappuccino in hand, we made our way to the circle of Adirondack chairs surrounding a fire pit. We didn’t want an evening to end that had started with a basket of freshly baked, warm bread accompanied by herbed oil and Parmesan. My companion enjoyed a tomato basil soup, and then our wonderful entrees arrived. He’d selected a wood-fired flatbread with fig and prosciutto, a generous eight slices that easily could double as an appetizer for four. The grass tees close at dusk, but the mats are well lit for after-dark practice. There also is a short game area and a putting green to hone short-game skills, and players can check their improvement by playing the Links’ nine-hole course, which is more forgiving than the challenging 18-hole circuit.

When in season, the dome is open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily and includes 50 hitting stations on two levels along with a virtual golf simulator, five large target greens surrounded by bunkers, six suspended hitting targets and a 45-foot long contoured putting green.

Although it is a smaller facility than some others in the area, with more than 30 grass hitting stations, this is a great place to go to practice. Instruction with PGAcertified teaching professionals is available. A small bucket on the range costs $5 while a large one will run $9, and there is a chipping area and putting green on site to work on short-game skills.

Having actual golf holes is great for practicing things that can’t be tested on the range, such as uphill, downhill or sidehill lies and working on pre-shot routines. Both mats and grass tees can be used at the range, while there also is a chipping and putting green.

WHERE: 2606 York Road, Oak Brook CONTACT: 630-990-3032 and oak-brook.org/234/Golf-Club AMENITIES: One thing that sets Oak Brook apart from most practice facilities is that all of the 30 hitting stations on the driving range feature grass tees; there are no mats here. Hitting off grass tees in practice more closely resembles playing conditions out on the course and better prepares players for the rigors of a round. In addition to the driving range, where the price for a bucket of balls starts at $4.50, there is a large short-game near the range where players can practice the chipping and putting.

Maximize your practice time with a 1-hour routine The old adage says practice makes perfect, and the same holds true on the golf course. Practicing is lots of fun – not! – but it can be if you do it properly and use your time well. There are so many things that can be fit into a good practice session that the room I have here is not nearly big enough to list 10 percent of them, but I will try to give you a few ideas to make it more structured and fun. Let’s start by imagining the average practice session lasts one hour. Here is how I suggest you split up the time. 0 to 5 minutes: Stretch, make warm-up swings with a low iron (I use a pitching wedge) and focus on keeping the swing as floppy and loose as possible. Do not worry how well you hit these shots. 5 to 10 minutes: Using a sand wedge or similar club, find a target within 50 yards and hit shots at it.

COMMUNITY VOICE IAN GRANT This should be a very easy swing and the effort level will be low. It also will help a great deal with your tempo and timing. Focus on the process of the swing making good shoulder turns and hitting each ball crisply. 10 to 20 minutes: Hit short-iron shots. Find a target on the range and hit wedge, 9-iron and 8-iron shots at it. Focus on keeping the swing fluid and finishing every shot in a pose you would be proud of if the Golf Magazine photographer was taking your photo at the end of your swing. 20 to 30 minutes: Hit mid- and long-iron shots. Similar to short-iron shots, find a target but this time make it a 10-yard wide target or be-

tween two points. Focus on stability and balance with these full swings and again work on the process, not the result. 30 to 40 minutes: Driver and fairway woods. The target increases in size here to 20 to 30 yards wide. Focus on keeping the swing smooth and relaxed. Try to hit five consecutive drives in your “fairway.” 40 to 50 minutes: Practice chipping and sand play. Work on the shots that will help you score better. I count the number of successful ups and downs that I make for every five balls that I hit. First, that gives me a small number of balls to hit and second, it helps me chart my progress. 50 to 60 minutes: Head to the putting green. Alternate between short putts and long putts and, if possible, finish off by playing a nine-hole putting course around the practice green using one ball and keeping your score.

As you can see, this practice session really moves along and doesn’t leave much time to get bored. Finally, in keeping with Rory McIlroy’s win at The British Open Championship this year, take a page out of his book and focus on the process while hitting balls. It is a key element in my instruction and if done properly will help lower your score. Good luck out there, and should you need more help contact me or your local PGA professional.

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com During a 22-year Major League career that came to a close in 2012, Jim Thome hit more than 600 home runs while playing for six different teams, including the Chicago White Sox. After hanging up the spikes, the Peoria native was hired by the White Sox as a special assistant to general manager Rick Hahn in July of 2013. On July 23, Thome made an appearance at the White Sox Silver Slugger Camp in Lisle and signed autographs before talking with the aspiring Major Leaguers in attendance. Thome also took time to speak with Suburban Life sports reporter Scott Schmid about teaching the young players, working for the White Sox, the Hall of Fame induction of White Sox legend Frank Thomas and his own chances of making it into the Hall of Fame. Schmid: What is it like for you to be able to come to these camps and spend time with the kids? Thome: It’s nice, especially this time of the year. My son is in youth baseball now so that gets me involved. The biggest challenge is getting kids back on a baseball field, so getting a group of kids like this playing and having fun is great. I remember back in Peoria growing up, we’d always play pick-up games. It’s important to get kids back involved with playing ball in any capacity. Schmid: How much did it mean to you to come back to the White Sox as a special assistant, and how are you enjoying it so far? Thome: I love it, working for Jerry [Reinsdorf, White Sox Chairman] and Rick [Hahn, General Manager] and Kenny [Williams, Executive Vice President]. It’s just been enjoyable. I get the best of both worlds, I get to be at home but I also get to be at the ballpark. Plus, I’ve gone on a few assignments to the minor leagues and gotten a

Schmid: How special was it to play for the White Sox for four seasons? Thome: It was a special time in my career. Getting traded from Philadelphia to Chicago, my mom had passed away and that brought my family closer together. Getting a chance to come home and play, that was a dream come true and those three, four years were a fantastic time in my life. Schmid: Is retirement treating you well? Thome: I’m enjoying it.

When Jerry called and brought me back, I found that thing in my life where I could still be around the game but also be with my family. It eased the transition to where I’m at. It’s definitely been great to learn the other side, to learn about the other parts of the game I never knew existed. Schmid: What aspects of the game do you miss? Thome: Competing, I miss digging in and competing. That never goes away. You can be retired for 10 years and still have that desire to want to get back in the box. But now it’s about passing the torch down, and with the

And I think I will let the process play its course, I try not to get too far ahead of myself. ELMHURST – The Elmhurst Swim Team recently wrapped up the summer season at the Illinois Summer Regional meet. EST sent 25 athletes to the meet, which took place at the UIC natatorium and featured swimmers from 24 states. In all, 12 EST swimmers made 24 trips to the awards podium with top-8 finishes, including three champions. Connor Groya (10 years old) won the 50-yard breaststroke yard breast and ascended the award stand again in 50 butterfly (third) and 100 individual medley (fourth). Flanagan Waldherr (14 years old) was the winner in the 500 freestyle. Jeremy Harrington (9 years old) won the 50 butterfly and placed eighth in both the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke. Sam Marlott (17 years old) placed second in the 100 butterfly, Connor McCarthy (11 years old) swam to second in the 200 butterfly, and Hannah Nolte (18 years old) was second in the 100 breaststroke. Nolte made it to the award stand in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, finishing third in each race.
