ADDISON – The 18th annual Five Star Business Expo moved to a new location this year at Medinah Shrine Center in Addison. The Addison, Bartlett, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream and Glendale Heights chambers of commerce hosted the business-to-business expo Feb. 28, but for the first time the event committee added a health expo. “It really did appear to be

very, very well attended,” Addison Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Dee LaRocca said. The Health Expo, which included 23 vendors, was a new idea the committee thought would interest the public and businessmen and women who attended. Health programs included a Zumba demonstration and presentations on topics ranging from insurance to healthy living.

Addison, surrounding communities plan for housing By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ADDISON – The village of Addison has asked residents to participate in an interactive online survey about housing strategies as part of the Homes for a Changing Region study. “I think every municipality is concerned about the recent recession,” said Drew Williams-Clark, principal planner for the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP). The agency, in partnership with the Metropolitan Planning Council and the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, is conducting a Homes for a Changing Region study covering East DuPage County, in-

Funded largely through CMAP itself, the study aims to determine future housing needs so communities can develop and redevelop with a vision for their municipality in mind. “We have the space to think really critically about the future,” Williams-Clark said. He explained that prior to

the recession many municipalities were reacting to developers’ plans, but now communities have the opportunity to plan for future development while the housing market returns from the economic recession. Homes for a Changing Region is part of a larger comprehensive plan developed by the planning agency that looks at land use, housing, water and energy conservation, open space and other community elements through 2040. The Go To 2040 plan involves seven counties and 284 communities. “People are interested in what they can do to leverage upcoming transportation investments,” said Williams-Clark, regarding the

Elgin O’Hare Western Access project’s impact specifically in eastern DuPage County. At this point, CMAP is looking for resident input to develop individual housing strategies for each of the four municipalities, as well as a larger regional plan. The interactive survey allows residents to place elements like retail centers, townhomes and residential subdivisions where they would like to see them in town. There also is a visual preference section that displays various types of buildings and asks residents if they’d like to see them in their neighborhood, somewhere else in town or not at all. “What we find is a lot of

times when residents are placing things on those maps they are things that have been brought up at previous meetings,” said Kendra Smith, senior planner for the east DuPage study. At the very end of the survey, residents are asked for their contact information so that the agency can keep them updated as a plan is developed. “It involves a lot of back and forth,” Williams-Clark said. Smith said CMAP has not yet determined any housing strategy, but plans to use community input. She hopes to have a draft prepared by late spring or early summer to start presenting to each municipality.

DuPage County residents seeking a same-sex marriage license will have to go elsewhere in the state if they want a spring wedding, according to the DuPage County Clerk. Attorney General Lisa Madigan wrote a letter to the Macon County Clerk’s Office on Tuesday after the clerk asked for legal guidance on the matter of same-sex marriage in the state. On Feb. 21, a U.S. District Court judge ruled Cook County must issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples before the June 1 effective date of the state law legalizing the practice. In the letter, Madigan said the decision to issue the licenses early was ultimately up to each county, but that “the protections guaranteed by the Constitution must exist without regard to county lines.” She encouraged clerks to find the court decision “persuasive” and said her office would likely support any suit against a county that denied a same-sex license. Gov. Pat Quinn said in a news release that the Illinois Department of Public Health would accept all marriage licenses issued by any county clerk in Illinois. “Nobody should have to wait for equal rights when it comes to love,” he said in the release. “I encourage every county clerk in Illinois to quickly follow the Attorney General’s guidance.” DuPage County Clerk Gary King said the announcement was unlikely to affect mar-

riage license issuance in the county before June 1. “Every law that is passed in Illinois has an effective date of law,” he said. “Our State’s Attorney [Robert Berlin] told me, and I agree with him, that we cannot supercede the law.” King said the announcement has no legal implications, that it could cause trouble if the law is changed before June and that remaining logistical details need to be addressed. State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Paul Darrah said the office’s role in defending the county in a lawsuit would be unchanged by the Attorney General’s support of early issuances. “We don’t make the laws, we enforce the laws,” he said. “And that’s the law that’s on the books right now. If the law changed, we would enforce that.” King said the best way to change the issuance date was to amend the law. “We deal with new laws and new legislation every year by the hundreds and we always follow the law by the date, and all of a sudden, this one thing is different,” he said. “Going around the law is just something I didn’t take an oath for.” A spokesperson for the Attorney General’s office said they had not heard of other counties that will begin issuing licenses early in light of the announcement. Same-sex couples living outside Cook County can apply for a marriage license there, but must be married inside county lines, Madigan’s letter said.

Republican governor primary: Bruce Rauner Illinois has big problems. Years of fiscal mismanagement and incompetent leadership have compromised the state’s economic future. Illinois’ five public pension systems are underfunded by more than $100 billion. The state ended 2013 with more than $7 billion in unpaid bills. Illinois’ credit rating has been downgraded five times since 2011, meaning taxpayers must pay much more in interest when the state borrows money. Moody’s Analytics predicted that Illinois will be dead last among all 50 U.S. states in job growth in 2014. It’s clear that those running state government have failed and change is long past due. On March 18, Republican primary voters have an opportunity to select the candidate they want to run against Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn in the November general election. State Sens. Bill Brady and Kirk Dillard are making a second run for the office. (Brady won the GOP nomination four years ago before losing a close election to Quinn.) Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford also is running, though his campaign has been rocked by sexual harassment charges leveled by a former staffer. Rounding out the field is businessman Bruce Rauner, whom we endorse. Rauner is not a career politician. In fact, this is his first run for public office. He supports term limits and, if he is elected, pledges to serve only two terms. groups who have helped to corrupt Springfield. He will not be afraid to stand up to the powerful public employee unions who have resisted change. His wealth was not given to him. He earned it during a lifelong career as an investor and businessman. Rauner is blunt when assessing the state’s many problems. Workers’ compensation is crushing businesses and an impediment to job growth. Despite a recent reform measure, public pensions are overly generous and unsustainable in the long term. The state’s tax system is unduly burdensome to both taxpayers and businesses and needs to be reformed. Rauner knows big changes need to be made to get the state back on the right path. Despite the many challenges, and the fact that whoever wins the governor’s seat more than likely will have to work with Speaker Michael Madigan, Senate President John Cullerton and a Democrat-controlled General Assembly, Rauner is confident he can get the job done. He has a genuine love for Illinois and a desire to improve the quality of life here. Rauner also knows his limitations. He admits that he himself doesn’t have all the answers, but he promises to surround himself with the best and brightest and work as hard as necessary to succeed, just as he has in his professional life. Rauner has the energy, the charisma and the financial backing to stand up to Quinn in the fall and win. In the Republican primary for governor, we endorse Rauner.

Reader: Potholes a problem in Downers It is apparent Downers Grove is competing with Chicago when it comes to potholes. I have blown a tire and have had to have a realignment as a result of the condition of the streets in Downers Grove. One has to zigzag all over the road to miss the huge number of potholes. There is no reason why Downers cannot fill these holes. The county has taken care of filling the holes on county streets in Downers. What is the excuse that Downers has? When do they plan on filling in the holes, when summer gets here?

That claim also is part of a complaint filed with the Federal Election Commission last month. “Absolutely not,” Goel said of sharing a campaign office with the IAFF. “I do not know the IAFF, who they are, what they are. … I have bigger fish to fry,” Goel said. Goel did say that Shalli Kumar, who also is named in the complaint to the FEC, is a supporter of her campaign, but is not her campaign manager as Kaifesh claims. Kumar is listed on the IAFF website as one of the PAC’s founders. Goel said she has no knowledge of his connection to the PAC and doesn’t want to know. Fundraising and help ing with technical issues are among Kumar’s roles with the campaign, Kumar said Wednesday. The engineer confirmed he was a founder of the IAFF, but said he has not been associated with the PAC since May 2013. Goel’s official campaign website questions Kaifesh’s permanence in Illinois and offers links to documents in an effort to support those claims. Goel’s residence in Aurora is outside of the district. Kaifesh, a colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, said he was born and raised in Carpentersville, which is in the 8th Congressional District. That remained his permanent residence while he attended college before beginning a 23-year career in the military, he said. “Did I live in Illinois while I was serving in Iraq and Afghanistan? No, it’d be kind of hard to do that,” said Kaifesh, who supports Del Mar’s request for Goel to withdraw from the race. “To attack me on my residency, it’s not only anti-military, it’s anti-American.” The Indian American Republican Organization endorses Kaifesh, who said he had nothing to do with the challenge of Goel’s petition signatures. “I did not challenge a single name on the petition,” Kaifesh said. “I never even saw the names. … That was a completely separate person that made that challenge.”

Brinkman: I want to work toward lowering the taxes we all pay whether it’s at the state level or here locally. I already recruited candidates locally (successfully) to act as watchdogs over our property taxes. If elected, this is something I would like to expand and continue. ... Omega prepares your favorites to the letter DOWNERS GROVE – Everyone knows the best dinner food is breakfast food; there’s just something about eggs Benedict or juicy blueberry pancakes that hits the spot, especially late night. So when my fellow diner and I originally scanned Omega Restaurant’s menu, we thought we’d head straight for the breakfast section – that is, until we saw its fully stocked dinner menu. With gourmet burgers, more than a dozen different sandwiches, steak, seafood and other dishes to choose from, we spent about 20 minutes just deciding on what to order. We kicked off the dining experience with Omega’s Famous Greek Saganaki – a fried cheese dish and, in my opinion, the best decision of the night. The appetizer was brought to the table in a personal-sized skillet and then lit on fire in front of us. Giant flames spread across the saganaki, providing not only mouthwatering flavor, but a surprising show, as well. Although the menu had us pulled in many directions, it was the traditional breakfast section that claimed both our palates. My choice was the Denver Omelette – with cheese, ham, green pepper, onion and added mushroom – while my companion went with the Omega Skillet – a pan stacked with hashbrowns, onions, choice of sausage or bacon, melted cheese and two eggs any style. While I was completely satisfied with my football-sized omelette – to the point where some leftovers found a place in my fridge – there are a couple items on the menu I’m already planning on tasting next time. Omega’s Saganaki Omelette sounds like a cheesy and deliciously appealing way to combine our previous appetizer and meals. But my biggest goal for the next visit is to save room for dessert so I (and a few friends) can tackle Omega’s Famous Tummy Buster Ice Cream Sundae – a

Blazers bow out By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com ADDISON – In a season that was already filled with what if moments, Addison Trail was forced to play its playoff opener without leading scorer James Pupillo. The result was a 52-44 loss to North Lawndale in a regional quarterfinal on Monday. Pupillo sat out the game with a back injury that had been bothering him for the past month. “He’s been playing the last month at about a 60 percent clip,” AT coach Brendan Lyons

said. “He’s been trying to tough it out. It just got to the point where he was in a lot of pain and we decided last week it was just time to shut it down and let him get healthy.” Without Pupillo, the host Blazers, the No. 16 seed in the Bartlett sectional, hung with the No. 17 Phoenix for about two-and-a-half quarters before a 21-2 run gave North Lawndale a 45-25 lead. The Phoenix led 2221 at halftime. AT senior guard Ronald Duling led a comeback attempt in the fourth quarter by scoring 10 points as part of a 17-1 Blazer run as they got within

50-44 in the final minute, but it wasn’t enough. Duling finished with 20 points. The Blazers ended the season 11-18. “We thought we’d be the flip of that coming into this year,” Lyons said. “I just think for our kids and our program and where they’re at, there’s one thing about all of them – they’re good students. They’re good people and they set a good example for our lower level kids in the program.” Pupillo, a four-year varsity player that was an West Suburban Gold all-conference guard this season, has multiple Division III programs vying for

his skills. Fellow seniors Ronald Duling, also all-conference, and Joe Villasenor are chasing the college dream as well. Joe Kurucar will play baseball at Elmhurst College. It’s a group of seniors that helped push the program forward. The season highlights included wins over Stagg, which was undefeated at the time, and Morton, the first time the Blazers beat the Mustangs in Lyons’ tenure. “I can’t say enough about our seniors,” Lyons said. “They put in more than any group that I’ve had. I don’t want to say they turned every-

thing around for us because I think we’ve been doing that, we’ve been getting better yearby-year, but they’re definitely going to be a group I miss.” Juniors Taylor White and Matt Gontarek saw plenty of action this season and will be joined by a younger group next year that headed up an 18-9 sophomore team for the Blazers. “Even though we graduate a lot I still think we have good days ahead of us,” Lyons said. “It will definitely have a new feel to it. I’m going to have to get used to not having James around. It’s kind of become second nature.”

School: York Year: Junior Impact: The Dukes’ point guard was the catalyst for much of the team’s success. She led the team in scoring (8.1 points per game), assists (2.9) and steals (2.0). Bianchi’s quickness made her a tough defender and got things started for York’s offense.

School: Willowbrook Year: Senior Impact: Domin took over as the Warriors’ point guard this season and helped the team win the West Suburban Gold title. The senior led the team with about 3.5 assists per game and also averaged 8.7 points per game.

School: Timothy Christian Year: Junior Impact: Gehrke emerged as a solid player for the Trojans on a team that had five new starters and a first-year coach. The 6-foot-1 center was an all-conference selection in the Metro Suburban Conference.

School: Montini Year: Senior Impact: The Ohio recruit is a tough matchup for opposing teams because she is a 6-foot-2 guard with shooting range and ballhandling skills. Entering this weekend’s state tournament, Karlis was averaging 9.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.

School: Willowbrook Year: Senior Impact: The Warriors needed someone to take over the scoring load after graduating a lot of talent from last year’s team, and the all-area MVP answered the call. Krawczykowski averaged a team-best 14.4 points per game and displayed an all-around game with about four rebounds, three assists and three steals per game.

School: Montini Year: Junior Impact: Kuykendall was a key bench contributor last year, but the junior forward emerged as a solid, strong player who is a staple in the Montini starting lineup. She is averaging 7.6 points and 4.4 rebounds per game for the Broncos heading into the state finals.

School: IC Catholic Year: Senior Impact: Manion was the rock for IC in the middle. She averaged more than nine points and nine rebounds per game and was a tough player that helped lead the Knights to their first trip to state. The senior forward earned her second state medal after helping the volleyball team win state in the fall.

School: Montini Year: Senior Impact: Ross is listed as a forward on the Montini roster, but managed to lead the team in assists. The IUPUI-bound senior is a strong player on the fast break and a good passer. She averages 3.4 assists per game while adding 7.9 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest.

School: York Year: Senior Impact: The 6-foot-2 Schlecht was a force inside for York. She was tough for opponents to handle inside and used her size to lead the team in rebounds (5.8 per game). Schlecht, who was also a standout in volleyball, averaged 7.6 points per game.

School: Montini Year: Senior Impact: Stone enters state this weekend as Montini’s only double digit scorer. The Colgate-bound guard is averaging 11.8 points per game after having made 93 3-pointers to this point of the season. The 6-foot-1 guard also leads the Broncos in rebounding (5.1 per game).

School: IC Catholic Year: Senior Impact: Vitek led the Knights in scoring at 10 points per game, but she did a little bit of everything well as a 5-foot-11 guard. She led the team with just over three assists per game and was second on IC with just shy of five rebounds per game.

The key to success By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – As a standout track athlete, Molly Krawczykowski used her speed to her advantage at every opportunity on the basketball court. The Willowbrook senior guard was the mainstay star for the Warriors this season. After leading the team in scoring and filling whatever the role the team needed, Krawczykowski is the MVP of the girls basketball all-area team. She helped the team win its first West Suburban Gold title since 1996. “Conference was one of our biggest goals, so it was a really big deal when we went undefeated,” Krawczykowski said. Plenty of standout track athletes play other sports and use their athleticism to their advantage, and Krawczykowski was no exception. She grew three inches from her junior to senior year and used her length to her benefit. “Her first step is really quick and really long,” Willowbrook coach Terry Harrell said. “I really think she had as good of a first step or better than any other female player in the past couple years in this area.” She used her speed and good instincts on the court to often rack up quick points on transition layups. Krawczykowski was also able to create her own fast break opportunities as a quality defender. This year Krawczykowski moved from point guard to shooting guard because the makeup of the roster changed. She became the team’s leading scorer, but even after she hyperextended her knee in the Warriors’ first playoff game she did other things to make up for her inability to drive to

the basket like normal in the regional final. “She still gave us 12 points, but then she also gave us 10 rebounds,” Harrell said. “She stepped up as a rebounder. She gave us different things. There’s always something she could give you that would help make the team successful.” In a year where the Warriors had as many as four contributing players out with injury at the same time, Krawczykowski was a staple. She never missed a game. “She was somebody as a coach that you wanted there,” Harrell said. “She started her sophomore year. She was very key at that point, but mostly as a defender. She developed as a scorer her junior year.” Harrell thought Krawczykowski would wind up as a college basketball player. Instead, Krawczykowski will be heading to Illinois State to compete for the track team. Her specialty is the 800-meter run, an event in which she is already a two-time state qualifier. When picking schools, Krawczykowski didn’t prioritize athletics for her decision. She had a lot of interest from Division III basketball programs and some Division II schools had reached out about her, but ultimately she picked Illinois State track because of academics. “I really like ISU as a school and they have a great special education program, which is what I want to do,” she said.

IC Catholic Senior | Basketball Why Brinkman was selected: Brinkman scored 24 points in an overtime victory against Winnebago in a Class 2A sectional semifinal Tuesday. IC Catholic senior guard Clark Brinkman led the Knights to a big playoff victory Tuesday. Brinkman scored a team-high 24 points and IC survived the game after a twohour trip to Bureau Valley. The Knights head back there tonight for the sectional final. Brinkman, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, talked with Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita about the team’s playoff run.

Has the success of the IC girls volleyball team, which won state, and the girls basketball team had any impact on your team? Definitely, all season. Seeing what the volleyball team did, going into our season we wanted to match what they

did. Our girls just went down state for basketball, too, so that also motivated us. We want to always do as well as or better than them. We’ve already gone as far as any IC team for boys. The volleyball and basketball teams really helped us strive to get here.

What’s the mood like with the team ahead of the sectional final? We’ve had a lot of rivalry games with AC, York, all those teams, but right now this sectional final game is going to be the biggest game of the season so far. It’s a chance to write our names down in school history. No other IC team has won a sectional final.

The Montini wrestling team claimed its seventh straight team dual state title over the weekend. The Broncos won the Class 2A dual team state title Saturday in Bloomington by winning three duals, all by a wide margin. In addition to being the seventh straight title for Montini, it was the 12th state title overall for the dominant program. In the quarterfinal, Montini defeated Washington 50-18. The next match was a 57-9 win over Cahokia in a semifinal. The Broncos finished off the championship by defeating Geneseo 49-21. IC lost two games at Normal’s Redbird Arena, settling for a fourth place trophy, but the Knights still went back to Elmhurst with a state trophy. “We were very thrilled and

very fortunate to have been provided the opportunity to spend some time together [last] weekend,” coach Aubree Lawrence-Schuett said. Prophetstown beat IC 57-48 in a semifinal Friday. Grace Vitek scored 24 points and eight rebounds, and Rory Manion added 10 points and seven rebounds in the loss.In Saturday’s third place game, IC lost a close one 32-28 to Teutopolis. The Knights led 16-12 at halftime, but ultimately fell

short despite 14 points from Abby Radoha. The three aforementioned Knights were the three seniors on the team and leave a lot behind for the program beyond the fact that they were the team’s top three scorers. “It was hands down the best four years of my coaching career,” Lawrence-Schuett said. “They’ve left big shoes to fill, but there are incoming freshmen and underclassmen that are waiting in the wings.”

New IHSA rule will effect several area schools By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com The Illinois High School Association recently announced adjustments to its multiplier rule for private schools that should impact the class that some area programs compete in for the state playoffs. The new rule, called the Success Advancement Component by the IHSA, will move teams up a class if they win at least two state trophies during a four-year period. The new rule will take effect starting with the 2014-15 school year. This won’t have any impact on teams that are already competing in the highest class or sports that have just one class such as tennis, water polo, swimming and boys volleyball. Football, which has the most classes of any IHSA sport with eight, will have a slightly different take on the rule: • Starting with the 2015 season, schools would be moved up two classes if they made three state finals during a four-year period. • Starting in 2016, schools would be moved up three classes if they make four state finals in a row.
