and big hair, Alexis was cast as a member of the Beauty Tribe. “I don’t care what I look like at all,” said Maxwell, who rarely wears makeup to class. She thinks the label was an interesting choice because beauty is so subjective, but she also wanted to use the label to her advantage. With a double major in learning and organizational change and psychology, Maxwell anticipated people would underestimate her other skills since she’d enter the game defined by her looks. “’Survivor’ is just all about the social game,” Maxwell said. While she was crowned Miss Addison in 2009, she had never before competed in a pageant. “That was the only time I did something like that, and I was doing it for a scholarship,” Maxwell said.

She prepared, she played, and now she has to watch the whole game on national television. “It’s definitely exciting and nerve-racking,” said Maxwell, who refused to watch recordings of her high school theater performances during her Addison Trail High School days because she was too critical of herself. Even while castaway on an island with 17 competitors in situations meant to test her, Maxwell stayed mindful of the cameras. “I thought about future employers,” she said. “I thought

about my little cousins that were all going to see.” Maxwell is still interested to see how everyone reacts to the show since she said the show brought out both the fun-loving side of her personality she usually reserves for her friends and her business side she usually leaves at work or class. Despite her tribe title, Maxwell wouldn’t call herself a beauty queen. She played her fair share of sports in high school, but after giving them up in college, she wouldn’t have put herself in the Brawn Tribe. She was open to the other, though.

“I think definitely I would feel comfortable being labeled as a brain,” she said. At 21, Maxwell is also one of the youngest players this season. She considered the age difference when she first met her competition, but wasn’t too intimidated. In a season preview, “Survivor” host Jeff Probst calls Maxwell a “dark horse” in the game, citing her age as a possible setback, but the smarts behind her pretty smile as an asset. ADDISON – Addison residents who caught the premiere of the latest season of “Survivor” on Wednesday may have recognized former Miss Addison Alexis Maxwell among the castaway contestants. “We watched it as a family since season one,” the 21-yearold Northwestern student said. Her father Ron, the biggest “Survivor” fan of the family, convinced her to apply with him for a spot on the show. In the spirit of fun, Alexis Maxwell put together her audition tape in a day. As she continued through the selection process, she couldn’t believe she might actually be cast. When she finally was chosen as one of 18 contestants for “Survivor: Cagayan,” the show’s 28th season, Maxwell decided to play not only for herself, but her dad, who wasn’t cast on the show. “I feel like it put even more pressure on me,” she said. The pair got to work strategizing and analyzing former seasons before Maxwell took off last summer for filming in the Philippines. This season, players are divided into three teams: brawn, brains and beauty. Armed with a big personality, big appetite for adventure,

Second man charged in Bensenville shooting SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BENSENVILLE – A 23-yearold Chicago man accused in the fatal shooting of a Bensenville store clerk last month is being held on a $2.5 million bond, according to a DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office news release. Tremayne Davis, of the 1400 block of North Lotus Avenue, Chicago, was charged with one count of first-degree murder over the weekend for the Jan. 19 slaying of Hussein Saghir at Sam’s Tobacco and Foodmart

in Bensenville, according to the release. Davis also has been charged with one count of attempted armed Treymayne r o b b e r y a n d Davis one count of obstructing justice, the release stated. About two weeks ago, Kenneth Bardlett, 20, of 49th Avenue, Bellwood, was charged with one count of first-degree murder in connection to the

slaying, according to a news release from DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Bensenville Chief of Police Frank Kosman. Bardlett was released from state prison on parole in July 2012 after being arrested in 2011 for possession of a firearm by a gang member, according to Illinois Department of Corrections records. Police offered a $10,000 reward Feb. 6 for information leading to the identification, arrest, prosecution and conviction of the suspects, accord-

ing to a Bensenville Police Department news release. Security video footage released by police shows Saghir, 36, of Chicago, and another store employee exiting the store when they were confronted by two men, according to previous Suburban Life Media reports. During a brief struggle, one of the men shot at Saghir before they both fled east on foot from the store. Saghir was found on the ground in front of the store, according to the police department news release. He

was transported to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead. Davis was allegedly the getaway driver after the murder, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office release. An investigation conducted by the Bensenville Police Department, the Major Crimes Task Force and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office led authorities to Bardlett. The investigation into Saghir’s murder continues. Davis’ next court appearance is scheduled for March 17.

York High School, Churchville Middle School, Conrad

Fischer Elementary and the district are following Rising Star procedures. “The state, at this point, would like to have all of [the schools] regardless of whether or not they’re required,” Charles Johns, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, said at a recent Board of Education meeting. Johns explained that, as a

result of No Child Left Behind standings and recently revised Illinois State Board of Education procedures, three schools and the district have not made AYP. He anticipates within two years all District 205 schools will participate as the AYP standards set by NCLB will increase. “It is an extremely high amount of work and labor that goes into completing these Ris-

One goal is for instructional teams to assess curriculum and instructional strategies using student learning data. Churchville also set broad goals for professionals, learners and the school community. Fischer, on the other hand, set goals aimed at meeting the needs of certain subgroups such

The five students on the team, plus a student assistant and two coaches, have been practicing as much as four times a week since September, honing techniques and recipes to continue what has become a bit of a dynasty. But the members say it refers only to the famed ghost. “The drink sounds gross,” said Ana Juvan, the band’s lead guitarist. After all, she wouldn’t know for sure. Not one of them is old enough to drink alcohol. Ana “Apollo” Juvan and drummer Kat “Cannons” Gannon are the oldest of the group at 17. District 88 to host heroin awareness events in coming weeks In 2013, there were 45 heroin-related deaths in DuPage County. That number surpasses the county’s record of 38 heroin-related deaths in 2012. At District 88, we’re committed to reversing this trend and helping put an end to the heroin epidemic in the county. The safety of students and staff is our No. 1 priority, and COMMUNITY District 88 will host several VOICE events to educate students Scott and parents/guardians about the heroin issue in the county Helton and state and the dangers of that illegal drug. I was honored to participate in a Heroin Awareness Prevention Panel on Feb. 20 at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church in Addison. The goal of that event was to have a discussion panel with a multifaceted perspective on the effects of heroin use in the community. The LTM Heroin Awareness and Support Foundation was a featured speaker on the panel and provided a resource table with heroin awareness handouts. In partnership with the DuPage County Regional Office of Education, local police officials and high schools throughout DuPage County, District 88 will host a Student Leadership Symposium on Feb. 28 at Willowbrook. The symposium will bring student leaders from throughout the county together to create awareness and understanding of the rise of drug use in the county, especially heroin. On March 18, Addison Trail and the Addison Police Department will host a Heroin Awareness presentation for parents/ guardians and students. The event will begin at 7 p.m. at Addison Trail and will focus on the dangers of heroin and how to support those who might be struggling with addiction. The event is meant for students in sixth through twelfth grades and their parents/guardians. Willowbrook will host a similar event starting at 7 p.m. on March 11. Don Bricker has been named publisher of The Herald-News and the Morris Daily Herald, Shaw Media announced Feb. 21. Shaw Media is the parent company of Suburban Life Media. Shaw Media recently purchased The Herald-News from Sun-Times Media. There were so many arguments,” he said. “During our first through third run throughs, we didn’t talk to each other.” Captain and Glenbard West senior Courtney O’Neal said the team made an effort to come together the past several months to achieve the family atmosphere they have now. “We fought at first,” O’Neal said. “It’s definitely so much better. usy adults need to make the most of their time. Work and family commitments keep down time to a minimum, so taking on the additional load of a college student is a big decision. They need a program that makes the most of their time. Courses that are directly applicable to the career, and partnerships with students who take their college experience seriously, and have similar goals. With that in mind, Northwood University’s DuPage campus in Glen Ellyn location offers an Adult Degree Program, which gives students the opportunity to pursue their education while maintaining the flexibility they need to balance family, work and school. “Northwood offers evening, weekend or online formats, as well as innovative options like our ‘3+1’ degree program, which allows students the opportunity to complete three years of coursework at partnership institutions

like College of DuPage and Harper College, before completing their final year at Northwood University,” said Ann Marie Rosen, regional development manager. The Northwood University student generally arrives with prior college credits from another university or community college. Many have been out of college for a while or took a break to focus on their career and family. They also have some students who are just beginning their university education. The Glen Ellyn Adult Degree Program Center offers a variety of degrees in both hybrid (a blend of face-to-face and online) and completely online formats. Classes are designed in partnership with industry specialists and advisory boards and are taught by experts who are active in the business world. Along with its Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Management and Marketing, the Glen Ellyn campus also offers

seven fully online degree programs including aftermarket management, automotive marketing management, health care management, marketing, entrepreneurship, management and finance as well as an online Masters of Science in Organizational Leadership. Health Department trains police on heroin reversal drug By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Fine mists of water sprayed the air Friday at the DuPage County Health Department during a training session for area police officers, in an effort to ensure 2013’s record number of heroin overdose deaths isn’t repeated. The lesson was part of the department’s DuPage Narcan Program, which puts the non-addictive drug Naloxone, or Narcan, in the hands of local police, allowing them to reverse the effects of an opiate overdose. With a rising number of DuPage County heroin-related deaths in recent years, including 46 in 2013, the drug could be a valuable tool, said Health Department Executive Director Karen Ayala. “These numbers are not nameless, nor are they faceless,” she said. “Each one represents a life lost.” Police are often the first responders to the scene of a drug overdose, sometimes be-

The department was looking for partners in the medical community to continue it. This represents one of many county government actions to address what officials call a growing epidemic, including the $100,000 education initiative Be a Hero in DuPage. It is also the first county-wide application of a 2010 state law allowing nonmedical personnel to be trained to use the drug, Ayala said. Jorgensen said DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin is working on language for a bill clarifying that trained responders using Narcan can’t be held liable in a civil case. Villa Park Police Chief and member of the DuPage Chiefs of Police Association Robert Pavelchik said the association already had a subcommittee devoted to the topic, but thought more needed to be done.

By keeping people alive, he said, it keeps the chance for recovery alive. “One of the people that we work with says that ‘Dying of an overdose is not the first step for recovery or treatment,’ ” Jorgensen said. “You have to understand that this is a medical disease, this is an addiction, this is a serious medical problem and we all know people who have either died of drug or alcohol problems and also recovered from drug or alcohol problems. These people are not lost to society.”

Get a homestyle meal at Bulldog Ale House CAROL STREAM – Sometimes you just want a homestyle meal, a plethora of beer options, and a classy atmosphere to possibly take in a game. Bulldog Ale House takes the concept of a neighborhood sports pub and combines it with a full-service dining room. The bar area is partitioned off from the diners, meaning you can feel free to bring your family for dinner and not have to fret about any sports fans’ exuberance spoiling your meal. On a recent visit, I opted for one of the few seats not in direct view of a TV, primarily because it was a slow night in the sporting world. That was a good thing, because it allowed me to focus on the food. My companion, not much of a sports fan, was indifferent to the televised display, but had a great time regardless. Located in the Fountains at Town Center subdivision just off Lies Road in Carol Stream, Bulldog Ale House could, at first glance, be mistaken for a local version of an Applebee’s, but that’s not true at all. There’s nothing kitschy about Bulldog, just a clean, nicely decorated and well-maintained eatery with a focus on food and beer. Wanting to get a sense of what’s offered, we started out with the “super grande platter” of mozzarella sticks, chicken wings, chicken tenders and warm pretzels. As mozzarella sticks were apparently in short supply that night, my dining companion was delighted at the chance to substitute mini corn dogs instead. Served with a variety of dipping sauces, it could easily serve as a meal for two all on its own. We ordered entrees nonetheless, knowing we’d end up taking most of the meal home for leftovers – you can’t very well review a restaurant off a single appetizer. I selected the beef Stroganoff, a childhood favorite of mine that can be excellent when made well and terrible when not. In this case,

The pot roast is cooked in a red ale gravy with carrots, red onions and celery, and served with garlic mashed potatoes. Not usually a fan of cooked carrots, my companion enjoyed every morsel, proclaiming the various flavors complemented each other perfectly. Bulldog Ale House offers 32 beers on draft and 22 in bottles at the Carol Stream

the standard varieties you’d expect at any bar, and some more esoteric brands, such as Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse, Half Acre Daisy Cutter and Shock Top Belgian White. If you enjoy a draft brew, there’s probably something here for you. As you might’ve guessed, we didn’t have room for dessert, but would’ve been interested in the giant chocolate chip cookie (topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate syrup) or

whipped cream and chocolate syrup). But then, who’s going to make it as far as dessert when the appetizer and meal portions are so tasty and generous? Maybe if we just split an entree …

AT boys aim to put rough patch behind them as postseason tips off By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com ADDISON – It’s safe to say Addison Trail’s boys basketball team has had better weekends After getting crushed by host Morton on Feb. 21, 88-36, the Blazers fell to Hinsdale South 63-55 the next day. The Blazers beat both teams in the initial meetings of the season, but were unable to complete season sweeps of their West Suburban Gold rivals. Morton played arguably its best game of the season, fired up to get revenge for the loss in Addison, and the Blazers didn’t do enough to stay with the Mustangs. A hot shooting Morton team led 30-13 after a quarter and 61-21 at half, not the kind of score that was expected after AT won the first time the two teams met. “We knew they could play and we knew they were capable of that,” AT coach Brendan Lyons said. “We just didn’t expect that. A lot goes to them and their ability to do what they did tonight, but we need to look at ourselves as well and say we didn’t do a lot of things to get the game back to our tempo. We didn’t shoot well and we took quick shots and we didn’t get to the offensive glass.” The Blazers finished 6-6 in the WSG, tying for fourth in the conference. On Wednesday, the Blazers hosted Lyons Township in a WSC crossover. LT won 67-42. It was AT’s fifth loss in six games. Lyons has the task of getting his team to regroup ahead of the playoffs, which begin Monday. AT opens in a regional quarterfinal against North

Fuentez, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, talked with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi in Champaign after he picked up his medal.

How did you mentally get ready after losing in the quarterfinals? I just focused on winning one match at a time, just focusing on that next match ahead of me.

What did you do well at state?

I was just trying to break my opponents mentally. I was just trying to go after them. I was trying to wrestle tough, smart and hard.

What was key to the third place match against Glenbard North’s Kirk Johansen? I wrestled him at sectionals in the quarterfinals. I don’t think [having wrestled him before] made a big difference. I wrestled him in IKWF [Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation] when we were in eighth grade, so I knew what he was going to do and he knew what I was going to do, so it was good.

Do you have any plans for college yet? I’m not sure yet [where I’m going], but I’m definitely going to wrestle in college.

Steve Cox earned a nice accolade before the college baseball season even began. The Concordia University senior relief pitcher and Willowbrook High School graduate was a second-team selection to D3baseball.com’s preseason All-American team. Last season as a junior, Cox made 17 appearances out of the bullpen and recorded 13 saves as the Cougars went 39-7 and finished the season ranked No. 16 in the country. His 13 saves were the third-most in Division III. He allowed just one unearned run in his 16 innings and fanned 20 batters while walking four.

Ensuring a long run Cross training will get you back on track after a foot injury By Tom Licciardello More Content Now

As runners, we tend to be incredibly focused. Just ask your non-running friends. Though being fully engaged in an activity we love can be a good thing, therein hides a potential problem. Joe Henderson, the first editor of Runner’s World magazine, wrote an article years ago that described the evolution of a typical runner. He observed that most runners start out as joggers seeking to improve health. It may be to lose some weight, or it may have even been a high school coach trying to get you into shape for your “real” sport. Then a funny thing happened. We pinned on our first race number. Whether we crossed the finish line in first place, last place or anywhere in between, we were transformed. No longer a jogger, we enter the second phase as a racer. Sure, the health benefits remain important, but getting a personal record in a race was now more important. No longer counting calories, it’s logging the weekly miles that occupies the runner’s attention. In the early stages, improvement comes in leaps and bounds. As the weight is shed and the running legs get more developed, the capacity to do more grows, and we eagerly take advantage of the newfound strength.

Injuries Personal best times seem like low hanging fruit, and we eagerly grab as many as possible. Then it happens. Injury. It seems that when running becomes an important part of your life, injuries are the dues that must be paid. Consider this from a recent article in the Harvard Gazette: “Most people know about a runner’s high. But for most runners, injury is as much a part of the experience as euphoria. Studies vary widely, but estimates indicate that between 30 and 80 percent of regular runners are injured in a given year from shin splints to runner’s knee to iliotibial band syndrome to plantar fasciitis. For many years, everyone from coaches to biologists to casual joggers has accepted such injuries almost as a necessary evil.”

But must we accept the injuries as a necessary evil, or is there a better way? Let me start by stating that I have explored every possible method of squeezing the maximum results from my training, yet failed miserably at keeping injury-free. I can imagine my orthopedic doctor, chiropractor, physical therapist, massage therapist, Reiki Master, acupuncturist and wife nodding in agreement. Sometimes wisdom comes from making errors. If that’s true, then I may be a running genius at this point. But by trial and error, I believe I have learned the secret, and it’s in a word — seasons. Most runners don’t have seasons. If time is taken off from hard training, it’s usually not planned, it’s being on the disabled list due to an injury.

That’s when we get depressed, eat poorly, gain weight and become irritable, not to mention envy those that we see running from our windows until the injury heals just enough so that we can begin the cycle again.

Insanity It’s said that insanity is doing the same foolish thing over and over again, while expecting a different outcome. If true, then I guess we’d be crazy to not consider planning our running seasons better and include cross training in the off-season. Cross training has been the same — made by the best coaches and professional athletes — for as long as I can remember. Strength training, biking, swimming, Pilates, yoga and CrossFit are among the many options that can occupy that space once reserved for

bench-sitting injuries. In the long run (pun intended), cross training will deliver the overall strength and endurance needed to keep a runner “in the game” for a lifetime. There’s no escaping the fact that as we age, our running capabilities will change. Grabbing those once easy to attain, personal bests will become more difﬁcult, so the goals will have to change, as well. What should never happen, however, is to allow an injury to preclude you from continuing your life as an athlete. In Joe Henderson’s article from so many years ago, he writes that there is a third phase that we will attain if we are fortunate to run long enough — from Jogger to Racer, but ultimately to Runner. It is only then that we can truly enjoy all that running gives us, and good health, certainly, and a chance to compete, of course, but even more so, an opportunity to run the open roads for years to come.
