The store sells electronic cigarettes that range from $20 on the low end to $120 on the high end with a variety of options. Juice is sold in three sizes. Panos said the average vaper uses about a milliliter of juice each day. A 15 milliliter bottle of flavored juice is sold for $8, 30 milliliters for $15 or 50 milliliters for $25. “We have way more of a selection than anyone else,” Panos said.
The store carries 40 different flavors as of now, which can all be combined to create custom flavors. Panos said some more unusual flavors include absinthe and horchata. Panos already has plans to expand the store by moving into a larger suite in the same building and adding a vaping lounge. It would be similar to hookah lounge where customers could relax on couches or chairs and try out different flavors. “Everyone in my life that smokes has switched,” Panos said.

ADDISON – Nick Panos has been smoking since he’s been old enough to legally buy cigarettes, but for the past 25 days, he’s been cigarette-free. “I smoked for six years,” said Panos, part-owner of Buddha Vape Inc. in Addison. “I never thought I would quit ever.” Buddha Vape, which opened Dec. 23, sells vaping equipment and electronic cigarettes. When 23-year-old Panos and his coworkers tried replacing smoking with vaping, he was skeptical. It didn’t take long for the former smoker to change his tune. Before he knew it, he was one of seven business partners opening the vaping product store. “We all switched and that’s what gave us the idea to open up this new company,” said Panos, who lives in Glen Ellyn. After the group of smokers-turned-vapers realized there weren’t many places nearby to buy flavored juice for the refillable e-cigarettes they were using, the group of entrepreneurs decided to open Buddha Vape next door to their existing businesses. “It’s really difficult to see if there’s actually money in it because it’s really new,” Panos admitted, but he said he’s still confident in the industry. He has experienced firsthand how a smoker might switch to electronic cigarettes. He said many hookah fans like vaping with flavored solution that contains no nicotine. “If people are big into hookahing they like to switch

Good Sam, parents welcome baby boy By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Jessica Larsen and Joseph Dempsey were driving for takeout at Nardi’s Tower of Pizza in Addison when her water broke New Year’s Eve. Larsen quickly called her doctor, who said there was no reason to rush. “He was like, ‘Oh yeah, go ahead and eat your food,’” she said. After some pizza and a quick shower, Larsen and Dempsey headed to Good Samaritan Hospital, where, several hours later, she gave birth to the hospital’s first baby of 2014. Joseph Mark Dempsey, or Joey, as his parents call him, greeted the world at 7:33 a.m. Jan. 1, measuring 21 inches long and weighing 7 pounds, 8 ounces. The healthy baby and mother went home Jan. 3. It was a surprise when her water broke, she said – she

Jessica Larsen of Addison attends to her newborn, Joey Dempsey, on Thursday. wasn’t due until Jan. 11. “On Friday, I went into the doctor’s office and he kind of made a joke about it, and I was like, ‘No I’m not due until Jan. 11,’” she said. “And then bam, little Joey was born. “Waiting for him is a little nerve-racking, but then once you see him you’re like, ‘ah, you’re here, you’re good.’” On the afternoon of Jan. 2, Joey was calm and content with his head of brown hair tucked under a white and blue stocking cap, and he and his mom rested in their room at Good Samaritan.
The Addison couple have been together for more than three years, they said, after meeting through mutual friends. “Marriage was in the future plan but this happened a little sooner than we expected,” Larsen said. “We wanted to do the traditional route but it didn’t happen that way. “There’s no perfect plan.” Joe Larson said he is looking forward to when little Joey is ready to play sports – hopefully baseball, hockey and soccer – his favorites. “Whatever he feels comfortable playing,” he said. ADDISON – The second annual WinterFEST will be held Jan. 19 at Community Park. The fest features sledding, snow volleyball, snow golf, a family snowman-building contest, and s’mores roasting. Addison rebounds from Arctic blast By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ADDISON – The new year announced its arrival with snow, Arctic temperatures and more snow. Jan. 1 and 2 brought nearly a foot of snowfall to Addison according to The Weather Channel. Then last weekend brought even more snow combined with subzero temperature, which gave public works employees quite the challenge. “We continue even today responding to this storm,” Addison Director of Public Works Mitch Patterson said Wednesday. The village is no longer working at emergency-response levels, but employees are continuing to make sure streets are cleared. If the village gets a significant amount of rain, Patterson said the frozen ground will offer no help. He doesn’t, however, predict any flooding problems as the deep blanket of snow around town begins to melt and temperatures rise. Rain is expected Friday and temperatures could break into the 40s by Sunday, a far cry from the start of this week. On Monday, Addison registered a high of minus 2 degrees and a low of minus 16, according to The Weather Channel. Area schools closed for a second straight day Tuesday as the low hit minus 12.
By the numbers As the thermometer starts to reach above freezing temperatures this weekend, here are a few numbers to consider from the recent extreme weather. District 205 embraces behavioral support Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive, schoolwide approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture necessary for all students to achieve social, emotional and academic success. As a MultiTiered System of Support model, PBIS provides staff with a problem-solving process and a continuum of support to enhance the capacity of schools to effectively educate all students. PBIS is a decision-making framework that guides selection, integration and implementation of evidence-based behavioral practices for improving academic and behavior outcomes for all students. Key PBIS components at the schoolwide level include: Behavioral expectations are defined and taught; COMMUNITY appropriate behaviors are VOICE acknowledged; behavioral Meg errors are corrected proacSchnoor tively; program evaluations and adaptations are made by a team; administrators provide active and ongoing support Implemented in over 18,000 schools nationally, the PBIS model is in place in more than 1,700 schools in Illinois. An essential component of the PBIS process is active data-based decision making. Schoolwide Information System (SWIS) is a highly-regarded data management system. It is used to access data to guide efforts around schoolwide implementation and students’ behavioral outcomes. SWIS data is used for building-based action planning around schoolwide needs, as well as to determine which students need additional supports. Elmhurst 205 has opted out of sharing information with other districts. PBIS is a systems change process and takes approximately three to five years to develop and implement. District 205 is in the second year of PBIS implementation in the middle schools, in the first year at the elementary schools. York Community High School has initiated their planning year. Emerson Elementary School recently held a celebration of reaching their PBIS goal. Since the beginning of school, students were “caught being good” and earned SOAR tickets leading to the reward of an all-school dance party. They filled the jar in both October and November. In October, members of the Churchville Middle School CHAMPS/PBIS team presented their poster project titled “Churchville Chargers: Charging Up Positive Support” at the National PBIS Leadership Forum. Additionally, school social worker Megan McCarthy was selected to co-present, along with Jennifer Phillips of SASED and Kevin Moore of the University of Oregon, on the application of a Positive Family Support model.

Students from Addison Trail High School’s theatre program took time during the holidays to step out of the spotlight and give students with special needs center stage. The AT students helped with the holiday show at Marklund in Bloomingdale, which serves people of all ages with serious and profound developmental disabilities and special health care needs. The show idea was pitched and bought, and taping began. Roughly 30 percent of footage will take place in the Lombard restaurant, 30 percent will take place in the family home in Barrington and the remaining 40 percent was shot in other locations, including Chicago and Cicero, Tumbarello said. The show, characterized by Capone as a comedy/drama and by Tumbarello as a cross between “The Sopranos,� “The Office� and “Entourage,� has many plotlines, including the often dicey relationship between Dawn and Staci. “Sometimes they like each other, [but] they’re still fighting,� Capone said. “My mom doesn’t live with us so she only sees the bad side.� Another common theme will be the relationship between Capone and Tumbarello, who “go back to Little League.� “You could put Bart and I on an island with aliens, and we’ll have friends and girlfriends in an hour,� Capone said with a laugh. Reality television aside, the experience has brought his family and friends closer, Capone said. “For the most part, it was a good experience because it gave us all the opportunity to be in the same room together,� he said. The series should also benefit the restaurant, Capone believes. “I’m excited, I think it’ll help business,� he said. “We’re getting new customers every day there. I think it’s a great thing.�

LOMBARD – For Dominic Capone, co-owner of Capone’s Restaurant and Pizzeria in Lombard, reality is all about loyalty and family. “[Loyalty] is an unspoken code,� Capone said. “You can’t teach loyalty. It’s something that you’re born with.� Capone, 38, the descendant of iconic gangster Alphonse “Al� Capone, is the star of a new reality show, “The Capones,� which will premiere Jan. 28 on REELZ TV. The show will follow the daily lives of Capone and his family members, including his mother, Dawn, his girlfriend, Staci Richter (the princess), and his best friend, Bartolomeo Tumbarello. The show also features Dominic Capone’s uncle, Lou Fratto (Uncle Lou), his childhood friend, Madeline Santarelli (Cherry Lips), and his other buddies, Jeff Vercillo (Sausage) and Carmine Perrelli (Meatball). “We didn’t have to fabricate anything [on the show], because we’re all generally friends,� said Tumbarello, who has known Dominic Capone since the men were children in Cicero. “There’s history there and people will see the chemistry on camera.� According to the network, the show is about a “drama-filled, lasagna-loving dysfunctional family who are living a true mash-up of the American Dream.� The show is produced by Asylum Entertainment. Capone, who carries the nickname, The Boss, because of his reputation as a decision maker among his friends, said there is more to his family than the perceived stereotypes. Other than the bloodline, the family has no mob ties, he added. “We respect the fact that we’re Italian,� said Capone, a great-nephew of Al Capone. “We’re all educated and most of us own our own businesses.� The initial idea for the show began about two years ago. Cronin: DuPage follows best practices of a small business By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Chairman Dan Cronin said he and the rest of the DuPage County Board are striving to make county government operate like a well-run business during a recent State of DuPage County Address. Cronin gave his remarks during the meeting Wednesday hosted by a number of area chambers of commerce. The event was sponsored by Choose DuPage. Much of the speech extolled the county’s fiscal responsibility. By spending taxpayer dollars responsibly, he said, DuPage government could avoid raising property taxes for the sixth straight year and keep money in residents’ pockets. “If you add up the dollars that we collect at the local government level through property taxes and all the different agencies, it’s an enormous amount of money that is taken out of the economy,” he said. Cronin pointed to the county’s balanced 2014 budget, the reduction of employee benefits and the elimination and consolidation of redundant or unnecessary districts as examples of the ongoing effort to scale back spending. “The challenge for (the county) is to be the example of how to take care of our affairs in the area that we can influence,” he said. “We want to demonstrate how we can find efficiencies.”

DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin gives a State of DuPage County Address on Wednesday at Seven Bridges Golf Club in Woodridge. Choose DuPage President and CEO Greg Bedalov said the county government’s thrifty approach makes for a business-friendly environment. He added that Cronin “help(ed) set the tone and the mindset, the culture of lean and efficient government that drives pro-business interests.” That political environment
has led to the lowest unemployment rates, the most educated workforce and the lowest industrial vacancy rate of any county in northeast Illinois, Bedalov said. ing, according to Cronin. He also discussed the importance of public transportation to the future of the county and emphasized a desire to reform or restructure area public transit. parity between Chicago and its surrounding counties. “We have public transit needs out here, we are subsidizing the CTA, we are subsidizing a lot of what goes on in the city of Chicago,” he said. “I’m happy to help out my fellow man, but you know, there’s an appropriate amount and degree.”

Man found dead in snow after visiting Elmhurst Elmhurst Police are investigating the death of a Chicago man after he was found dead beside his parked car Sunday morning in Elmhurst. William Colatos, 55, was visiting family Saturday in the 200 block of West Avenue. He left to return to Chicago around 7 p.m. that evening, but his relatives noticed his car was still parked outside Sunday morning, said Police Chief Michael Ruth. A family member discovered Colatos deceased lying alongside his car and covered in snow, Ruth said. Ruth said Colatos did not have any visible signs of trauma, but he was brought to the DuPage County Coroner Office. The Coroner’s office planned to do an autopsy earlier this week, but those results may not be available for about a month. The Elmhurst Police Department Detective Bureau continues to investigate the matter.

The Park District board has a potential $7 million outlay for the proposed improvement for the beautiful open space at Ackerman. I sure hope the park board realizes that sometimes less is more and doesn’t get carried away with making a monument to themselves – like the ground clock on Main Street in Glen Ellyn that took up several valuable parking spaces and is in constant need of repairs. Glen Ellyn Park Board members: Have mercy on the taxpayers who are still overburdened by the economy’s downturn by being fiscally responsible. Keep in mind many of us enjoy the natural beauty of our parks. There’s already enough manmade structures in the park already polluting the landscape. The Lisle Main Street pedestrian tunnel underneath the Metra tracks has been in disrepair for many years. On Nov. 1, it was closed for repair. Not only is this a major inconvenience, it is a major safety issue. Who makes these decisions? Certainly not a commuter. Perhaps it was the same people who permanently closed off eastbound traffic on School Street at Main Street, which forces patrons searching for parking to exit the downtown area at Ogden Avenue and just keep going. Two months later, the tunnel is still closed and no one is there. What is the priority?

Public Works Department is doing a good job
Early Thursday morning, I noticed my mailbox post had been broken off at the base by a snow plow. I called the Lombard Public Works Department and left a message not knowing what, if anything, they would do. Even with all of the work going on I heard back from them within two hours. A very pleasant woman let me know that not only would the city replace my mailbox (probably in the spring) but that a temporary box would be put up within a day or two. A sign taped in the window of My Favorite Toy Store in Elmhurst thanks customers for their support but announces the store’s closing. Toy Store said outstanding business loans led to closing the downtown Elmhurst and Downers Grove stores. Owner Michael Geisen of Downers Grove said the bank declined to offer a payment plan and instead took a lumpsum payment on long-term business loans, emptying his business checking account. Geisen said he took loans
over time to buy inventory for both stores, as well as remodeling efforts and initial buildouts. But there were no funds left to pay staff or keep the doors open, which he closed for good at both stores at 3 p.m. Dec. 31. Geisen opened the Downers Grove location first in 2001, after a survey of residents named a toy store as the
standing bills and outstanding sales taxes require him to sell all remaining merchandise at wholesale on advice of his attorney. He will not able to honor gift certificates, returns or exchanges. “I can’t open the doors and incur more expense,” he said. “I feel really bad about that.” Geisen said business began to slow in 2008. “We were struggling, but I certainly didn’t see this coming,” he said. The two stores employed 17 people, he said. He said he believes a momand-pop toy store can still be a viable business in downtowns like Downers Grove and Elmhurst. “We were the vendor of choice with the specialty items that we carry,” he said. “And with the free gift wrapping and customer service, and helping the customer find the right gift, you can’t get that on Amazon.”

ELMHURST – My Favorite Toy Store has closed, but another Elmhurst business is offering to accept at least portions of unused gift cards issued by former toy store. A Book Above, located at 136 W. Vallette St. a few doors down from Elijah’s Specialty Coffee and Tea, has agreed to take 15 percent off every purchase made by someone with a My Favorite Toy Store gift card, up to the value of the gift card. According to the children’s book store’s Facebook page, the newly opened store hopes to help out disappointed children who may have gotten gift cards for Christmas that are now otherwise useless. Those with gift cards must be able to prove their value with a receipt. “We gather many were impacted by this closure,” said A Book Above on its Facebook page. The owner of My Favorite

John Quigley, president of Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said losing My Favorite Toy Store could impact downtown Elmhurst. “It’s always bothersome when you lose a destination store,” Quigley said. Quigley explained that Christmas shopping yielded more in total sales for retailers this season than last, but numbers still came in lower than forecasted. Many retailers count on those fourth-quarter sales around Christmas for a successful fiscal year, Quigley said. Still, Quigley said the fate of My Favorite Toy Store is one all too common to the retail business scene since the recession. “Unfortunately, retail store closings are kind of business as usual for any time of the year,” Quigley said. Glen Oak Restaurant unveils its new menu GLEN ELLYN – We made a happy discovery when we stepped inside Glen Oak Restaurant on a recent Sunday, finding ourselves hungry but not sure what we were in the mood for foodwise. Art posters dot the walls of the downtown Glen Ellyn eatery, whose high-ceilinged, airy space has lots of elbow room, with tables and comfortable booths. Dining there for the first time, we noticed the unusual touch of casters on the chairs for ease of motion. With expansive windows all around for views, we enjoyed watching the trains a block away. A friendly server brought over warm rolls, quickly followed by the French onion soup we’d ordered. It was an ideal antidote to a bitterly wintry day. A telltale clue that it was freshly homemade were the chunky onions and an errant bayleaf. My dining companion was pleased the soup wasn’t too salty, adding, “There’s a zesty bite to it.” For his main course, he opted for the Reuben sandwich. The tender corned beef was piled high on rye, with just the right proportion of sauerkraut and melted Swiss, and a crunchy dill pickle. The sandwich normally is served with Thousand Island dressing, but he changed it up with bleu cheese. The Reuben passed the test with flying colors. I focused on the breakfast menu, which is served all day. An avowed omelet fan, I wasn’t disappointed with a delicious blend of creamy cheese, grilled onions, spinach and ham. For a side, I chose hash browns, which arrived light, slightly crispy and ready to be seasoned to personal liking. My companion felt compelled to complete the homey diner experience with a slice of warm cherry pie a la mode for a sweet finish to an enjoyable meal. And late afternoon and evenings, the restaurant will be available for private events. We’re looking forward to trying other dishes next time around, knowing we won’t leave hungry. The ample leftovers we took home tasted great for lunch the next day. The new menu offers a wide array of breakfast
specialties including sweet or savory crepes, multiple Benedict variations and gluten-free pancakes, plus panini, burgers, wraps, salads, sandwiches and other fare. We learned Glen Oak has been around for three decades, and now we know why.

Of the 12 teams that started the 2013 playoffs, the Bears only played four of them. In five games against Green Bay (2), Cincinnati, New Orleans and Philadelphia, the Bears were 2-3. The Bengals game was the first game of the season and the Bengals did as much or more to lose it as the Bears did to win it, kind of like Cincinnati’s third consecutive first round playoff exit last Sunday. Their other win over the Packers was accomplished without Aaron Rodgers as quarterback. Including the Bears game in which Rodgers went out after their first possession, the Packers were 2-5-1 without Rodgers including losses to the Giants, Lions and Steelers. The Bears losses to New Orleans and Philadelphia were their only two
losses of the year in which they were noncompetitive, and their other five losses besides a loss to the Packers were to Detroit (2) and the last place Rams, Vikings and Redskins. The Bears are clearly not in the same league with this year’s playoff teams. For starters, the Bears need to get better at quarterback. Seven of the 12 playoff starters including Nick Foles, Peyton Manning, Philip Rivers, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick (91.6) had better passer ratings than Jay Cutler and all but Kaepernick were at least 12 points better at 101.2 and above while Cutler was 89.2. The other five Alex Smith (89.1), Andy Dalton (88.8), Cam Newton (88.8), Tom Brady (87.3) and Andrew Luck (87.0) were all almost even with Cutler in rating, all of them threw more touchdowns and only Dalton and Newton threw more picks. You tell me, other than Dalton is there a QB in the group you wouldn’t take over Cutler? The Bears are very competitive

with all of these playoff clubs at running back and wide receiver. With the possible exception of the Broncos, the Bears are better than any of those clubs at those positions. The only 2013 playoff teams that aren’t clearly more talented on the offensive line than the Bears are Indianapolis, San Diego and Green Bay. The Bears line was effective most of the time this season, but it’s not capable of taking over games the way the 49ers, Eagles, Seahawks, Panthers, Broncos, Patriots and Chiefs can at times. If you’re a Bears fan you already know that defensively they just don’t match up, particularly in the NFC. Seattle, the number one seed in the NFC also is first in the NFL in scoring defense. The second seeded Panthers are second in the league in fewest points allowed, the fifth seeded 49ers are third and the sixth seeded Saints are fourth. In the AFC, the Bengals and Chiefs tied for fifth in the league in scoring defense, the Colts were ninth in the league, the Patriots 10th and the Char-
gers were actually 11th. Nine of the 12 playoff teams are in the top 11 in scoring defense. In that top 11 only the Cardinals – seventh in points allowed and 10-6 – and the Dolphins – eighth and 8-8 – failed to make the playoffs. The Bears were 30th in scoring defense in 2013, tied with the Redskins and only the Vikings were worse. The Bears dramatic improvement on offense under Marc Trestman this year was exciting and at times a lot of fun to watch. But their decline from fifth in the NFL in total defense in 2012, eighth vs. the run and third in points allowed is the reason they fell from 10-6 to 8-8 and are not currently a legitimate contender. It is quite possible the Bears will improve at quarterback as Cutler spends more time with Trestman, but the only way they’re going back to the playoffs for the first time in four seasons and just the second time in the last eight is by turning over the defensive half of their roster with a lot more talent.

Those quarterbacks, though, all signed with teams that did not just throw $54 million guaranteed at its starter. Of the teams paying the most guaranteed money for its starting quarterback, only one rewarded its backup more than $1 million in base salary last season: the Lions paid Shaun Hill $2.4 million (Kyle Orton restructured his deal to lower his base salary after Tony Romo got paid). Backups for Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are still on their rookie deals, Joe Flacco’s backup – Tyrod Taylor – made a little more than a half million, while Matt Ryan’s backup – Dominique Davis – made $480,000. McCown’s brother, Luke, made $840,000 as Drew Brees’ backup. The Bears would need to find an amount that works for McCown, but also isn’t dedicating too much 2014 money to the quarterback position, one
that doesn’t need nearly as much improvement as the other side of the ball. That’s a reminder that we don’t know how McCown fits in the Bears’ priorities during the next few months with a defense to fix, but we have a good idea where he is among Cutler’s priorities. “I’d like to see him come back,” Cutler said after signing his seven-year contract. “I know we’d love to have him back. I know Phil touched on it. We’d like to have him back in the building just because of the amount of work he does behind the scenes with the younger players and myself. Just the experience he brings to the quarterback room, it’s very valuable. “We’ll see how that works out.” McCown will have his suitors, and he’ll keep in mind his four kids that live in North Carolina as he decides what’s best for his family. By the time free agency opens on March 11, the Bears will have a better grasp on their cap situation, how McCown would fit into the fold and if they can bring a fan and team favorite back next season.

Jay Cutler received the richest check the franchise has signed, but what’s next for his backup? Josh McCown played sensational football in his five starts and time in relief in two other games, while also igniting a quarterback controversy (albeit, outside the walls Josh of Halas Hall) during McCown what coach Marc Trestman referred to as Cutler’s best season. McCown, who turns 35 in July, completed 66.5 percent of his passes for 13 touchdowns and one interception, good for a passer rating of 109.0. “Love to have Josh back. I’ve expressed that to him,” general manager Phil Emery said Thursday. “Josh, through his play, has earned the right to have choices, and he’s got a lot of them and he’ll have a lot of them. He does
know he has a home here and that we’ll do everything we can to make it work if he decides he still wants to play here.” Can the Bears afford McCown? It may seem like a ridiculous question when talking about a 35-year-old backup, journeyman quarterback who made $840,000 in 2013. But, as Emery said, McCown will have options. The Bears signed Jason Campbell to a $3.5 million deal in 2012 with a $2 million signing bonus, so McCown and his representation could use that as a place to start. Or, they could look at the highest-paid backups in the league. Addison’s Scimeca chases Olympic dream SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA As soon as Alexa Scimeca put on figure skates at the Addison Ice Arena as a child, she dreamed of being an Olympian. The Addison native and 2009 Addison Trail graduate will learn her Olympic fate tomorrow. Scimeca, who first skated at age 7, and her partner, Chris Knierim, are currently in the middle of the 2014 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships. The short program was Thursday, and the free skate is Saturday in Boston’s TD Garden. The top two pairs at the event qualify for the Sochi Olympics in February. The 21-year-old Scimeca and Knierim were second at last year’s nationals and placed ninth at worlds as the top American pair at that event. Saturday’s free skate will be televised on NBC starting at 3 p.m. In order to qualify for the Olympics, Scimeca and Knierim will have to finish ahead of the recent national champions. The 2012 champions, John Coughlin and Caydee Denney, didn’t compete last year because of injury, and the spot they vacated helped Scimeca and Knierim qualify for worlds. Last year’s champions, Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir, are also back to defend their title. Scimeca and Knierim have been together for less than two years but have found good chemistry on and off the ice. The successful pair is also a couple off the ice. Bianchi was an all-tournament selection and helped lead the Dukes to the Oswego East Holiday Classic Tournament title. York junior guard Jessica Bianchi has emerged as a key player for the Dukes this season. She averaged 12 points per game during the Oswego East Holiday Classic Tournament to help the team win the tournament title with four wins. She scored 20 points in the final, and more recently was one of five York players to score seven points or more in a 53-32 win over IC Catholic. Bianchi, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, talked with Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita about the tournament title and the outlook for 2014.
How big was it to win the holiday tournament? That really boosted our confidence, especially after we had a rough start for our season. We really connected during that tournament. After that tournament we won the game against IC, so we’re really in sync now.
What changed for your team during the tournament? Our first half of the game against Harlem, it was a slow start and our coach wanted us to press and move more and show more energy. We started getting steals and layups, and the rest of the tournament we started to press and that really got us pumped. Our defense is really helping us, and a lot of teams were talking about how our man-to-man press is really good.
What are your goals for the rest of the year? We had a rough start, especially with conference too, but we’ve been talking about winning the rest of our conference games. We’re not letting down. Our conference is really competitive. We want to win all our conference games and go farther in the playoffs than last year, when we were second in the regional.

The Elmhurst Airborne fifth grade boys Green team were tournament champs at the fourth annual Elmhurst Airborne Roundball Winter Classic on Jan. 4 and 5. A total of 122 teams competed in 183 games. The tournament supported the Elmhurst Airborne travel basketball club and also was a fundraiser for a local food pantry. High schools are just getting back in the swing of things for the new year after a slow weekend of high school sports. However, college teams don’t slow down during the holidays, giving area basketball products a chance to showcase their talents for their college basketball teams.
Sophomore guard Evan Fendley (York) has come off the bench in 11 games, scoring 3.5 points per game. IC Catholic grad Brian Harvey, another sophomore, has played in one game off the bench. Glenbard East grad Jack Merrithey was a key reserve and came in off the bench for the first five games of the season, but is no longer on the roster.

Marissa Pezzopane, an Addison Trail grad, is a regular for the Augustana women’s team. Pezzopane, a sophomore forward, has made five starts and played in all 12 games while putting up 10 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. She also leads the Vikings in blocks, with 15 on the season.
The Reaber sisters – Taylor, Kasey and Brittney – had various high school experiences, but have all wound up at Illinois Wesleyan. Taylor, a senior, and Brittney, a freshman, graduated from IC Catholic. Kasey, a junior, graduated from Montini. All three are currently playing basketball at Illinois Wesleyan University. With the Titans this season, Kasey has started all 12 games so far and is averaging 7.9 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. Taylor is also seeing regular minutes, good for 14.4 minutes, 4.3 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. Brittney has played in just one game so far, but has time to catch up to her older sisters’ production. Willowbrook grad Angela Bruno is also a freshman on the team and has come off the bench in six games.
