Ericksen said when it comes to teaching preschoolers, it takes a lot of patience; but it’s also about giving the youngsters their first taste of independence because preschool is the first step on their education ladder. “You’re guiding them a lot, but you’re kind of stepping back at some points, too,” she said. “It’s like, ‘I know you can do this.’” Having previously worked in a high school, as well, Ericksen said she didn’t care for working with teenagers and was excited to work with the

over here, my grandma always did the Irish dancing during holidays and birthday parties and such,” she said, “My mom then got me involved with Irish dancing.”

CLARENDON HILLS – Life is never dull for the new preschool teacher at the Clarendon Hills Park District who has as much energy as the 3and 4-year-olds she teaches on a daily basis. When it comes to preschoolers, getting their attention is one thing, but keeping that attention is another. That’s where Kathleen Ericksen comes in. She implements several of her hobbies into the curriculum, such as teaching sign language, Irish dancing and piano. “I constantly bring in the different skills I have and implement that in any way I possibly can to enrich the curriculum,” Ericksen said. Perhaps her greatest trait is her work with children with disabilities. She has experience working with SEASPAR, has done extensive work with the hearing impaired and got a psychology degree in 2004 and later worked in a psychiatric hospital. “I love working with special needs kids, adapting, making accommodations any way I can to try to help them to move forward just like any other kid,” the Willowbrook resident said.

D-86 considers exclusive contracts with Coke or Pepsi By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – When it comes to public schools, a constant enemy is the struggle for revenue to ensure the best for its students. But sometimes revenue comes with what some consider a moral dilemma. Hinsdale Township High School District 86 will consider entering into an exclusive contract with the beverage companies Coca-Cola or Pepsico to sell products in the vending machines. It’s a consideration that
has some board members and residents butting heads. “My concern is with obesity on the rise and trying to maintain a healthy environment, that Coke and Pepsi don’t belong in the schools,” board member Jennifer Planson said. “I would rather see water, even Gatorade, but I do not want to see Coke or Pepsi in the school.” After investigation, acting superintendent Bruce Law found out there is no district contract with Coke or Pepsi. Instead, there are athletic clubs that operate and maintain their own vending ma-
chines. Law said if the district entered into a contract with either company, the district could be involved with what products were put into the machines. “Coke and Pepsi are into all kinds of products that are not just sugar labeled products,” Law said. Hinsdale resident Linda Burke strongly opposed entering into a contract with Coke or Pepsi, not just citing health concerns, but having a public school take money from a major corporation. “The other problem with taking this money is, that
once you take money, you give control,” Burke said. “The soft drink companies have actually produced health education curriculum. We need objective and science-based health courses, we don’t need to give them a foot in the door at all.” Burke said she was not opposed to either company selling its products, but said schools shouldn’t be giving corporations the position to market its products to kids. “Public schools should be accountable to the taxpayer, not the corporation,” she said. Darien resident Roger Kempa brought the issue to the board for consideration earlier this summer. He said going into a contract with Coke or Pepsi would be a “great benefit” and earns additional revenue for the dis-

trict. “It’s a no-brainer, easy thing to do,” Kempa said. “You pick one or the other and they work with you on whatever kind of food you want, or drinks or whatever. They work with all the different clubs and athletics and it’s just a common thing amongst all the high schools.” Hinsdale Central High School has about 14 vending machines with soft drink products among other items, and Hinsdale South Principal Brian Waterman said the high school had about eight to 10 machines with juices, water and soft drinks. Waterman said he would leave the decision to enter into a contract with either company with the board, but also wants to see health stressed when it came to products served. “Of course you always want to see as healthy as products as possible, but I know right now we have a mix of soft drinks, juices, water and both diet and regular soda,” Waterman said. According to Coca Cola’s and Pepsi’s websites, each company offers nutritional items, including bottled water. Law said district officials now are setting up appointments with each company.

Hinsdale resident charged with DUI twice in three days By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – A Hinsdale resident was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol twice in three days last week by the Hinsdale Police Department. Michelle Beaulieu, 46, 5708 Sutton Place, was charged with DUI alcohol, carrying
suspended registration and driving while license suspended at 9:55 p.m. Sept. 10 at Sutton Place and 57th Street. Beaulieu then was charged with DUI alcohol, suspended registration, driving while license suspended, no insurance and illegal transportation of alcohol at 3:31 p.m. Sept. 12 at Garfield and 3rd streets.

Michael Bassaly, the man accused of killing his mother Aug. 29 in Burr Ridge, pleaded not guilty to all five counts of first-degree murder on Sept. 13 at the DuPage County Courthouse via his attorney Marc Wolfe. The 27-year-old Downers Grove man allegedly shot his mother, Yvonne Bassaly, in the head around 1 a.m. at the St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church parking lot, 15w455 79th St. Yvonne Bassaly was pronounced dead at 1:42 a.m. at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, said Burr Ridge Deputy Chief Marc Loftus.
Prosecutors said Michael Bassaly confessed to being involved in an illegal scheme, which involved Michael fake applicaBassaly tions for asylum. Bassaly also was being investigated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He allegedly confessed that he feared he would be arrested soon and planned to kill his mother and himself. Judge Daniel Guerin gave approval for cameras to be in the DuPage County courtroom during the arraignment Friday, but Wolfe
objected, saying it posed a threat to his client’s family members, according to media reports. Wolfe said during a pre-arraignment that Bassaly is a Coptic Christian and feared that video or photographs could be seen in Egypt and endanger Coptic Christian family members, the reports said. Guerin overruled the objection Sept. 13 and allowed media outlets to seek permission to bring cameras into court. On Aug. 30, his bond was denied at the DuPage County Courthouse. Too many cars I don’t think the parking charge [in Brookfield] would apply to visitors or “emergency situations,” but if you want to talk about fairness, let’s address the houses with multiple cars on the street that take up more room than their own house. I am tired of looking at other people’s junks in front of my house every day. When I have visitors, they have to park down the block because there is no room by my house. How fair is that? Street parking also encourages multiple families living in a single family house, these houses often use far more resources than they are paying for. That is unfair to all the taxpayers in the village. It’s time to stop catering to the few rotten apples, and focus on the good of the village. That is the fair thing to do.

Distinguished resident celebrates 100th birthday I recently had the honor and privilege of being asked to be among the speakers, along with Secretary of State Jesse White and former Chicago Park District Superintendent Ed Kelly, at a party celebrating the 100th birthday of Claude A. Walton. Born on Aug. 1, 1913, in Marshall, Texas, Claude A. Walton has been a resident of the York Center Community of York Township since 1955. Claude and his wife, noted children’s author Darwin Walton, raised their children, Claudette and John, in the York Center Community where Claude also served on the York Center Park Commission. That’s certainly enough to earn a resolution in his honor by the York Township Board of Trustees. However, there is much more to this man. The following is a quote from a biographical sketch of Mr. Walton written by one of his neighbors. “Claude Walton is 6-foot-4 of pure elegance. His handsome physique, astute mind, and quiet demeanor underscore a legacy of service and achievement.” A naturally talented musician who supported himself in college by playing piano in orchestras and bands throughout Denver and Boulder Colo.,, Claude Walton also was the first University of Colorado athlete to earn All-American honors in any sport (1936), with his specialty in the discus throw. He was the recipient of the University of Colorado’s Alumnus of the Year Award in 1976 and inducted in the University’s

Claude served four years with the American Red Cross during World War II, establishing USO clubs in England and France, and he was employed for 50 years with the Chicago Park District, starting as a summer worker in 1937, with consecutive promotions to physical education instructor, playground supervisor and finally associate superintendent from 1970 until his retirement. Claude Walton instructed and mentored countless individuals throughout his long and productive career with the Chicago Park District, including such notables as Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, jazz musician Ramsey Lewis, former Chicago politician Wilson Frost, the late radio host Daddy-O-Daylie, high school coach Carl Bonner, and the late Claude “Buddy” Young, NFL running back and executive. HCS Family Services is nonprofit organization that serves the residents of southeast

About four years ago, the village provided a free space in the Memorial Building to HCS to open a food pantry for the less fortunate. “You wouldn’t think [a food pantry] would be found in Hinsdale, but that really says something about the village and their commitment,” said Executive Director Albert Sunseri. “What the people in this community have done is they’re really supporting the less fortunate among us.”

Besides Hinsdale, HCS serves Burr Ridge, Clarendon Hills, Darien, Oakbrook, Westmont and Willowbrook. The food pantry in Hinsdale now is open three days a week and used to serve on average 25 people each opening, but that number has gone up to anywhere from 35 to 40. “To be self-sufficient in DuPage County you have to earn over $65,000 a year, so it’s one of the most expensive counties to live in,” Baker said. This isn’t your typical food pantry, Sunseri said. Rather than have someone just hand out a couple of bags of food to each person, the HCS food
pantry is designed like a grocery store where customers get carts, browse items and pick foods and beverages for their families. Sunseri looked on as a woman smiled brightly, her cart filled to the brim with breads, meat and nonperishable foods. “Look at that,” Sunseri said. “That can feed her and her family for days. That will do a lot of good for her.” The food pantry serves about 4,100 families a year, but the outreach from that stretches to about 23,500 family members, Sunseri said.

On Sept. 6, HCS hosted a “Kids Service” day where those as young as 6 got to volunteer at the food pantry and help in any way they could to assist the less fortunate. One of those volunteers included the principal of Hinsdale South High School, Brian Waterman, who joined the HCS Family Services board in July. This was his first time though volunteering at the food pantry. “It’s obviously beneficial to the community and it’s outstanding we have kids here as young as 6 given the opportunity to give back,” Waterman said. “It’s good to get the students started

toward that goal of service at a young age.” Waterman also was accompanied by his two kids who assisted in volunteering. Another first-time volunteer was Dan Allen, 16, of Burr Ridge, who was asked by a friend to help out. “It’s a lot of fun,” Allen said. “You can tell everyone is really grateful.” Sunseri has served on the board for about a year and in that time he said he’s gotten to know 95 percent of the people who come through the pantry. After he retired from his previous job, Sunseri said he was looking to do something significant in his life.

Adventist Cancer Institute approved for construction By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – The Hinsdale Village Board of Trustees voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a new Adventist Cancer Institute to be constructed at Ogden Avenue near I-294. The 54,000-square-foot center is estimated to cost $48 million and is scheduled to open in 2015. “It means so much for our community and the area as a whole because it’s going to be a state-of-the-art facility for people who need cancer treatment,” said John George, attorney for the hospital. A major benefit, according to officials, is that patients will can receive everything they need at one location when the Cancer Institute is built. Patients can visit their doctor, have lab work done and receive chemotherapy and radiation treatments in one location, according to Adventist
Midwest Health’s website. According to the website, the Adventist Cancer Institute will feature 18 private treatment rooms equipped with entertainment centers, five open patient bays for patients who prefer to socialize in a group setting, imagine services, two linear accelerators and 21 exam rooms. George said construction will start as soon as the permits have been issued. Hinsdale Village President Tom Cauley thanked the hospital for coming to the board and for going through the process to get the Adventist Cancer Institute approved. “This to some extent debunks the myth you can’t have a large project in Hinsdale with the village’s zoning code,” Cauley said. Police issue more than 100 citations HINSDALE – The Hinsdale Police Department has declared its participation in Illinois’ annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over drunk driving crackdown a success, according to a news release. The police department reported three drunk driving arrests, 54 citations for no seatbelts, one citation for a child safety seat violation, one driving on a
suspended license arrest, two citations for no insurance, 31 citations for speeding, one person was arrested for drugs and 58 citations were issued for other violations to the Illinois Vehicle Code during the enforcement period that ran from Aug. 16 to Sept. 2. The recent law enforcement crackdown was funded by federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation and is part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket campaigns.

Darien Police seeks auxiliary officer DARIEN – The Darien Police Department currently is accepting applications for the position of auxiliary police officer. The auxiliary police officer position is a civilian, unpaid, volunteer position. Qualifications to be auxiliary police officer include being at least 21 years old, possessing a high school diploma or GED, having a valid driver’s license, being in good physical condition, possess good character and cannot have any felony convictions. Duties of the auxiliary officer include but are not limited to patrolling the city, assisting with traffic control, handling car lockouts, animal complaints and parking enforcement. Some weekends, nights and special event duties are required. Testing of candidates will include a background check, drug screen and a psychological exam. The Cellar Bistro uncorks delectable fare WHEATON – A friend mentioned The Cellar Bistro as a favorite destination, so my dining companion and I decided to drop by one recent weeknight to see for ourselves. Outdoor seating beckoned, but we opted to sit indoors in the charming dining room. The bistro’s corner location in downtown Wheaton is ringed by large windows, but, at night, the lighting goes way down to amp up the romantic ambiance. Amid tables and a few banquettes, we selected a hightop at a window to oversee the burgundy-red room and an attractively backlit bar, where stemware and wine bottles glimmer. After viewing the menu’s expansive wine list, it’s easy to see why the word “cellar” is part of the bistro’s name. The full bar also features a few craft beers and alternates two on tap. We opened with mushroom brie soup, accompanied by baguette slices. It was delectably savory, with a hint of sherry, and finely minced mushrooms in a creamy soup that tasted more complex with every spoonful. Starting quarterback Chase Hamilton had to be helped off the field Friday after injuring his ankle during the Red Devils’ second series in their conference opener against York. On Saturday, an MRI revealed that Hamilton has a broken ankle, sidelining him indefinitely. But backup quarterback Jacob White picked up the slack,

“Coming in, my thoughts were run the ball and control the pace of the game,” White said. “We had some big plays and our defense was tough all night.” The 6-foot-1-inch senior made the game’s biggest play, too, which came with 6:34 remaining in the third quarter after a Dukes’ touchdown drive cut the score 14-7. On first down on the Hinsdale 32-yard line, White – operating out of the wildcat formation – caught the York defense blitzing. He faked the option handoff, slashed through the linebackers and raced 68 yard for a touchdown.
“I don’t usually get a chance to break those kinds of runs off, so it felt really great,” White said. “My wide receiver made a great crack-back block to open a hole; without that, it’s probably only a 6-yard run.” White, who also plays linebacker and running back, completed none of his three passing attempts but his forceful ground attack – including 126 yards on 10 second half carries – controlled the tempo and time of possession all night. Hinsdale Central Coach Rich Tarka applauded White’s performance as well as the Red Devils’ ability to overcome adversity.
“He’s a senior, a leader, and a big-time player for us,” Tarka said. “The team had full faith in Jacob and we put some scores on the board when we needed it most. It was great to see the team show some character when facing adversity.” Tarka also commended the defense, which limited York to only a touchdown after the Dukes posted a combined 107 points in their first two games. White will get the starting nod today when the Red Devils host Proviso West, who is 1-2 and coming off a 29-6 loss in their conference opener against Oak Park-River Forest.

Bears face wounded, desperate Steelers team Hub Arkush I suppose it would be clever to say you really have to be wary of a wounded Steeler, and the Pittsburgh Steelers at 0-2 will be all of that when the Bears come calling Sunday night. But the truth is I’m not entirely sure what a Steeler is? My best guess is they just represent steelworkers in Pittsburgh, and while I’m sure those guys are tough, I’m pretty sure I’d rather wrestle a Steeler than a Bear. Still, this is the first time a Mike Tomlin-coached team has been two games under .500, and they’ll kick off the game knowing a win here puts them right back in the middle of the AFC North chase with all four clubs stumbling out of the gate. These Steelers do have their issues, but they’re just four seasons removed from their last Super Bowl title and they will be a desperate bunch when
the Bears get to Pittsburgh. The biggest challenge Pittsburgh offers is at quarterback, where Ben Roethlisberger already has won two Super Bowls for them – Tom Brady and Eli Manning are the only other active QBs with more than one ring – and is as dangerous extending plays in the pocket as anyone in the game. Big Ben is particularly scary when his protection breaks down and he starts improvising. Bears defenders will have to hold their coverage in pass defense much longer than they do against most opponents, and with the problems they’ve had pressuring quarterbacks it can make for an awfully long night. One factor in the Bears favor, however, is Pittsburgh is mediocre at best at most of the skill positions on offense, and the running game in particular is as weak as any Steeler team in recent memory. Pittsburgh drafted Le’Veon Bell in the second round after allowing former No. 1 pick Rashard Mendenhall to leave via free agency and then sur-
prised many by releasing last year’s leading rusher, Jonathan Dwyer, in training camp. When Bell went down with a foot injury – he’ll be sidelined at least three more weeks – the Steelers were forced to trade with the Cowboys to bring in Felix Jones. After sitting out the opener, Jones rushed 10 times for 37 yards on Monday night in Cincinnati and will probably be Pittsburgh’s main ball carrier versus the Bears. Emmanuel Sanders, Antonio Brown and Jerricho Cotchery are the primary receivers but none match up particularly well with the Bears corners. Heath Miller is a quality tight end but is still not 100 percent after a serious knee injury last year, and backups David Johnson, David Paulson and Michael Palmer really don’t scare anyone. This is another big benefit to the Bears, whose safeties have struggled in coverage to date. Pittsburgh also continues to struggle on the offensive line, and their best player, Maurkice Pouncey, is through
for the year after tearing up his knee. Completing the puzzle on that side of the ball, the Twitterverse was ablaze early in the Bengals game with insiders and amateurs alike trying to figure out whether or not Todd Haley even had a game plan and, if so, what it was. Defensively, the Steelers still are very good against the run, and they love to get after the quarterback. But the loss of veteran Larry Foote for the season in the opener versus Tennessee, along with the releases in the offseason of James Harrison and Casey Hampton, appear to have left a real leadership void. Troy Polamalu is still on the backend at safety, but he appears to have lost half a step; and Ryan Clark is better against the run than the pass at the other safety. This will be the Bears and Marc Trestman’s new offense’s first look at a 3-4 defense. For Pittsburgh it revolves around the linebackers, and LaMarr Woodley and Lawrence Timmons are both still extremely active.

Is there any more useless fantasy information – other than this column, of course – than the “start ’em or sit ’em” feature? Seriously, how can you definitively advise a fantasy owner to start or sit a certain player without knowing the specifics of that owner’s roster and league format? If you play in an eightteam league, the bar for a “start” is set a lot higher than if you play in a 12-team league. Other factors, such as point systems and injuries, make it impossible to abjectly declare a player a “start” or a “sit.” Still, we watch the NFL Network scroll and wait to see the names of our players. We rejoice when they are declared a “start” and cringe when they are a “sit.” I understand that this is intended
more of a thumbs up/thumbs down, but I’ve encountered many newer fantasy players who take the advice literally. Weekly point projections also are flawed and tend to confuse newer owners. My wife pointed out to me that one of her backs was projected to score seven points and another was projected for 14. She figured it was a no-brainer. However, if you broke down the projection, they were probably predicting 70-some yards and no TD for the one back and 80-some and one TD for the other. If only life were that simple. The yardage makes sense, but no one can accurately predict the intangibles that result in one player scoring and another getting shut out. Perhaps a more useful tool would be a yardage projection along with the estimated chance of scoring a TD. And once more for clarifi-

After entering the second half tied, the Hornets (0-3) dropped another tight game on Friday, losing to Willowbrook 35-28 in the first West Suburban Gold conference game for both teams. A late, drive-killing fumble on offense, as well as a few deep strikes at the hands of Willowbrook quarterback Brian Johnson, proved too much for South to overcome.

He also led the Hornets ground attack, totaling 185 rushing yards and three scores on 29 carries. “We made the change at QB for the second half of the Downers North game,” Barry said. “Robert is a strong runner and a smart kid. He
had a couple interceptions early, but was able to right the ship and overall we were happy with his performance.” Barry added that Regan will again get the start Saturday when Hinsdale South faces off against Proviso East (0-3), who lost 27-20 in their WSG conference opener against Morton on Friday. “Going forward, we want to limit the big plays [against us],” Barry said. “On offense we want execute well and limit mistakes. Proviso is highly talented and has explosive potential, and we need to find a way to stop that.”

It took less than a quarter for the Mustangs to top that number against Addison Trail and they didn’t stop there. The Mustangs had a breakout offensive game in a 40-21 win over the host Blazers on Friday night. Le’Devin Smith had three touchdowns and Alec Arvanitakis scored twice to spark the Mustangs (1-2, 1-0 West Suburban Gold). Smith had both first quarter touchdowns on runs of 4 and 8 yards. “It felt really good,” Smith said of the big offensive game. “We know that our offense is working together as one now and getting on a better page and keeping up the pace. Now we know what it takes to score this many points.” Arvanitakis added his two scores in the second quarter on an 8-yard run and a 50-yard reception to build a 26-0 lead. DGS coach Mark Molinari explained that Arvanitakis isn’t in danger of losing carries to Smith, who plays more of a fullback role as opposed to Arvanitakis

Amiri (17th) and Fish (36th) again had strong showings Saturday in the sizable field at the First to the Finish invite on the state finals course at Detweiller Park in Peoria. South will look for strong showings again this Saturday at its Mustang Run invite and later in the season at the Lockport invite (Oct. 5). The postseason begins Oct. 19 with the West Suburban Gold meet, which takes place a week before the regional race.

The Riverside Public Library Timeline of important dates …..
April 21, 1927 Referendum passed establishing a library and levying a tax for this purpose. April 17, 1928 First Library Board elected. June 25, 1920 Bond issue referendum to construct a building for $75,000.00 passed 120-70. February 8, 1930 By election of the people, the Library Act was amended to permit the library to be built in any park in the Village under exclusive control and supervision of library directors. April 11, 1930 Hired Grace Gilman as librarian prior to opening; signed agreement with architect Connor and O’Connor. May 26, 1930 Memorandum of agreement signed between Village and library to permit the library to erect and maintain a library on Village land. August 6, 1930
Awarded General Contract for construction of library building to Arvid H. Viren for $51,630. October 4, 1930 Ground breaking and laying of cornerstone. November 13, 1930 Resolution passed to construct a joint heating plant with the Township for heating both the Town Hall and the Library. April 4, 1931 Dedication and opening of the library. Those present included Mr. Connor, Architect of the building and Edgar Cameron, a Chicago artist who painted the mural of Marquette and Joliet. Robert Somer- ville, first Library Board President, presented the Cameron Mural and decorative map of the region as a personal gift to the Library. Over 1800 people registered for library cards the first week the library was opened. April 22, 1931 Organizational meeting for Friends of the Library. Mrs. Joseph Jaros was elected President. December 22, 1931 Cut annual operating budget from $8,990 to $6,500 due to low rate of tax collection during the depression. September 30, 1936 Board voted to replace library doors with solid oak entrance doors. February 24, 1937 Riverside Historical Society materials housed in the Library. February 1, 1940 Village moved out of basement room of the library. Basement remodeled into a children’s room. May 1, 1966 Riverside Public Library becomes one of the first libraries to join the new Suburban Library System (SLS). April 1975 Riverside Public Library was recipient of the “All-Star Library Award” from the Illinois Library Association. Referendum passed to increase library tax rate from 19 mils to 40 mils. November 1984 Referendum by voters to fund a $1,500,000 addition to the library passed 5,196 to 4,470. Architect : Frye Gillian Molinaro; Contractor: A.C.M. Associates; Size:12,500 sq. ft. addition to the 5,761 sq. ft. building. April 14, 1985 Groundbreaking for new addition. September 7, 1986 Grand re-opening of the library with new addition. October 1989 and January 1990 Flamingo Film Company spent four days filming an Encyclopedia Britannica Film in the Library. December 1991 Riverside Public Library pictured on the cover of American Libraries magazine. April 1997 Riverside Public Library building is used for the taping of the Oprah Winfrey Show book discussion of Stones from the River by Ursula Hegi. October 1997 The Riverside Public Library joined the World Wide Web: www.sls. lib.il.us/rss/ June 1998 Library awarded grant of $33,306 from the Illinois State Library to renovate Terrace into the Quiet Read ing Room. Construction began March 1999.

June 2007 Library receives a $12,000 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation to complete the replace- ment of lighting in the Library. July 2008 Bats at the Library, a children’s book by Brian Lies, is published by Houghton-Mifflin Corporation. The “Library” used in the book is the Riverside Public Library. October 10, 2008 Author Brian Lies comes to Riverside to read from and autograph his book, Bats at the Library. The Library celebrates this event with “Batoberfest”, an evening of fun for the entire community. Bat images lit the Library Building and the Village’s Water Tower to publicize the event. May 2010 The Library is involved in the Language of Conservation and is the recipient installations of poetry and other related materials throughout the building. “The Language of Conservation”, is an initia- tive of the Poets House in partnership with the Chicago Zoological Society, Riverside Public Library and Brookfield Public Library, as well as a consortium of zoos and libraries nationwide. It is made possible by a National Leadership grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and will continue for three years. October 2010 The Library celebrates the 80th Anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone and begins its 80th year of service to the people of Riverside. April 2011 The Library celebrates 80 years of service to the community! March 2012 The Library’s Sustainable efforts project, We R Riverside Responsible, kicks off.

April 5, 1999 The front of the Library was filmed for use in an episode of “Early Edition”. November 7, 1999 Dedication of the Quiet Reading Room. Young Adult Area opened on lower level. August 2002 Young Adult Area opened on lower level. April 2004 Lighting fixtures, made to look like those which originally hung in the Library, were installed in the Great Room. The fixtures were purchased with money received from the estate of Grace A. Board, a for- mer staff member and friend of the Library. April 24, 2005 The Library’s 75th Jubilee Year begins with a Commencement Celebration. A whole year of programs, events and celebrations took place in recognition of the Riverside Public Library’s 75th Anniversary. All costs incurred and associated with the Anniversary year were funded by the River side Friends of the Li brary. June 2005 Library receives grant of $ 27.000 from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation to replace lower level light- ing. April 30, 2006 The Riverside Friends of the Library mark their 75th Anniversary. Their many years of support to the Library is celebrated. June 2006 The Library receives a $17,000 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation to replace the lighting in the Adult Non-Fiction area. September 2006 Landscaping project completed. Funded by the Riverside Garden Club, the Frederick Law Olmsted Society and the Riverside Friends of the Library.

RAC is a real gem tucked into the warm hands of a wonderful community. It has nourished two generations with quality programs by sharing the simple belief that art has value and can enrich anyone’s life. We proudly celebrate our 20th Anniversary on May 18th with Prom-O-Rama! It will be a festive way to kick off our next decade of the RAC and will truly be a night to remember!” Since 1993, the Riverside Arts Center (RAC) has been providing Riverside , its surrounding suburbs and the city of Chicago with exhibitions, arts classes, and special events. The RAC is located in the heart of Historic Riverside. It includes the Freeark Contemporary Art Gallery and a variety of studio space, including a renowned clay studio that has a full range of electric, raku and stoneware kilns. RAC offers more than thirty art classes each term (Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall) for children and adults in mediums ranging from clay, to oil painting, to fused glass jewelry, to printmaking. The RAC also offers provide tours, field trips, and curriculabased workshops for public and private schools and professional development opportunities for teachers. Poetry written by Central School students will play through speakers, and the fourth graders will perform and interact with the audience in the park. Riverside Arts Weekend (RAW) celebrates both visual and performing arts with a multi-media juried fine arts fair and full musical performance schedule centered in Riverside’s Guthrie Park. Glamour takes center stage on Sunday, May 19 at 2:00 p.m. as RAW presents Revelry, a runway show featuring emerging designers from Dominican University. Revelry highlights fashion as a form of art with the cutting edge work of nine (9) alumnae of Dominican University’s Apparel Design program. The designers will present collections true to their respective artistic visions and highly unique from one another.
Revelry opens with the work of established designer Caroline Borucki (caro___) who has retail presence in New Buffalo, Michigan. It then segues to the work of emerging designers Alexandra Howard (Elmwood Park), Izzy Heras (Romeoville), Amanda Lindley (Tinley Park), Samantha Petkofski (Niles), Iris Carney (Berwyn), Molly Morettes (Park Ridge), Hannah Gerhardt (Omaha, NE) and Erin Von Kannon (Monmouth). Many of the designers will also exhibit portfolios and samples of their work at a Dominican University collective booth throughout Riverside Arts Weekend.

The mother and son team make up Higgins Glass Studio, 33 E. Quincy, entrusted to the Wimmers to carry on the art crafted by their long time mentors, Fran and Michael Higgins, who began the company in 1948. Louise and Jonathan agree that it was Fran’s ideas and Michael’s energy and ingenuity that led these two huge talents to start their work out if their Chicago apartment in 1948. Over the years their art sold in such major retailers as Marshall Field’s, Georg Jensen and Bullocks Wilshire, the very high end store in the California based department store chain. In 1966, the Higgins decided to return to private studio work and set up their offices in Riverside. The website notes that “here they were free to set their own goals, meet their own standards and design in the direction their hearts and minds led them.” There’s a lot of history in Higgins, and the Wimmers are proud of their work and the company.
