dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Lemont resident Morgan Rex learned that the HOPE Closet at River Valley School needed reorganizing while doing volunteer work with the Lemont Juniorettes. She said the clothes always were scattered and the closet had an ineffective organizational structure. Rex chose to restore the HOPE (Helping Other People Everyday) Closet as her Girl Scout Gold Award project. The HOPE Closet is the Hope and Friendship Foundation’s clothing closet for underprivileged families. She received the award, the organization’s highest honor, during a cere-

Rex, who is entering her second year of college, completed the project during her senior year of high school. “It was a perfect opportunity to give back to the community and something that would have a lasting impact and continue even after I left
for college,” she said. Rex bought new shelving, organized a clothing drive with the help of a fourth grade Girl Scout troop and reorganized the closet to make it user-friendly and sustainable. To fund the project, she reached out to local businesses and clubs. “It really helped it out a lot,” said Kelley Van Hecke, adviser to the Lemont Juniorettes. “It had been all bins in the closet with one wall of hangers. It was her idea to reorganize to use more hanging space.” Van Hecke said Rex added a mirror, replaced the step ladder, put replaceable labels on the clothing bins and helped organize the hanging clothing by size.

Though Rex has earned the Girl Scout’s highest honor, she said Scouting will continue to be a part of her life. As an adult, she hopes to be a troop leader for her own children someday. Rex is studying for a degree in biomedical engineering and wants to make medical devices that improve the quality of life of patients. For Rex, earning the Gold Award is something that will help her in her career. “It really means that I know that I have a capacity to do bigger and better things within the larger community in the future,” she said. “I learned a lot of skills like networking that will be very beneficial in my future career.”

LEMONT – The village of Lemont has hired two employees to fill newly created positions as part of a reorganization of its administrative structure. Eileen Donahue is coming from the village of Oak Brook to be Lemont’s new human resources generalist. Chris Smith has been hired as finance director, after working as assistant finance director for the city of Naperville. Both will begin their new positions the week of Aug. 26. Village administrator George Schafer introduced the new hires to the Lemont Village Board during its Monday meeting. “I’m very excited to see how the team is coming together,” Mayor Brian Reaves said. Schafer said the new positions will enable the village to manage finance and human resources without consulting private firms. “We were just looking to further professionalize the department on a fulltime basis,” he said. Schafer said the village can afford hiring employees to fill the new positions by not filling the assistant village administrator position left vacant when he was promoted to village administrator. Schafer said additions to the management team should be finished once the new hires start.

Music teachers get reprise at Lemont elementary schools dfarnham@shawmedia.com
The return of the music teachers does not mean all of the special programs teachers are back. The classroom teachers will still be responsible for teaching art. “We really felt like our teachers probably had more expertise in the area of art than in music,” River Valley School Principal Debby Lynch said. Superintendent Susan Birkenmaier said the art specialist is scheduled to be added in the fifth year of the district’s long term plan, which has entered its first year. However, she said that could change as the district evaluates its plan each year.
Debby Lynch said the parents were supportive of the teachers’ efforts to instruct music but preferred a music teacher. “There was a large portion of the community that felt strongly about a music education or band education for the kids,” she said. “The community was clear that a specialist teaching was important.” Lynch said the classroom teachers are excited to have the music teachers back. River Valley third grade teacher Cathy Cortez said the teachers did the best they could to add music to their curricula, but it was a challenge. “It took a lot of time, and I don’t think everybody has the expertise to be able to do that,” she said. Cortez said teachers will have larger amounts of time to collaborate as a result of the scheduled music classes, but she is most excited for how having a music teacher will benefit the students. One thing parents can expect to see is more music programs. Zeyen said she and Treanor already are planning a Veterans Day program, and she hopes to have a concert in the spring. Treanor sees value in having the children perform in concerts. “They get such a sense of pride in themselves when they are able to get up and show their talents,” she said.

LEMONT – Three years after eliminating the music specialists because of budget constraints, Oakwood and River Valley schools each are adding a part-time music teacher for the upcoming school year. Allyson Zeyen will teach the kindergarten to second grade classes at Oakwood, while Jenna Treanor will teach the third and fourth graders in River Valley. Grades one to four will have two 25-minute music classes a week, while kindergarten will have one 25-minute class. For the past three years, the classroom teachers were responsible for teaching music. Oakwood Principal Cathy Slee said the teachers did a good job keeping music in the classroom, but they cannot be expected to bring the same level of expertise as a music specialist. “[Students are] going to see music at a different level,” she said. “To have someone bring that music alive with the piano or the variety of instruments, it will bring that fine arts portion to a higher level for the students.” Treanor, a Lemont resident, will be a familiar face for some of the students at River Valley. She volunteered to teach recorders to third graders last year and teaches music lessons in the community. During the summer, she also held a musical theater camp that ended with a community performance. “I’m excited that music is being brought back and the children are going to be able to have the opportunity to learn the core curriculum and have the music enhance it,” she said. Zeyen, who is a spring graduate of DePaul University, said she chose Oakwood over other job opportunities. “I think it is a great school,” she said. “I think there will be a great opportunity to build a great music program.” River Valley Principal

Hearse show expected to draw lively crowd By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Lemont is host to many car shows during the summer, but the LasRyds Hearse Club will put the focus on a unique category of classic vehicles this weekend. The club (pronounced “last rides”) will hold its Greatest Show Un-Earthed from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday in the Talcott Square parking lot, Stephen and Talcott streets, Lemont. Besides the hearses, there will be themed vendors, carnival games, a costume contest, charity raffles and other entertainment. Proceeds from the raffles will benefit the Hope and Friendship Foundation. Troy Hambly, founder of the club, said membership is made up of more than people who like the cars for being spooky and morbid. “Probably a majority are what we call ‘haunters,’” he

said. “Other people like them just because of the cars.” Hambly also said most members are not in the funeral services industry, although he operates a funeral home in Plainfield. “For me, it’s just because they are unique,” he said. “I was actually a hearse collector long before I got in the business.” To Hambly, hearses are good classic cars because they are custom-built and relative-

Hambly owns an 1890s-style horse drawn hearse, a 1926 Chrysler, 1947 Rolls Royce and a 1994 Chevrolet. The person responsible for bringing the hearse show to Lemont is Kim Peters,
co-owner of the Aurora Rose boutique. Peters said her store previously was in Willow Springs, near where the club had its show in past years. Her Lemont store is across the street from Talcott Square. “I know the quantity of people it brings to town,” she said. “We’ve been open for over two years, and it still
stands as our best business day.” Peters also appreciates hearses and wants to own one. “Hearses are a beautiful car,” she said. “And most of the time you don’t get to appreciate it because, if you get up close to one, they’re putting someone you love in it.” Peters said other business owners have shown a “tentative excitement” for the event. “When I first approached the Chamber president with this, she was all for it,” she said. “When she pitched it to the Chamber, they said ‘You want to do what?’” Hambly said reactions to the hearses range from “they’re gross” to “those are kind of neat.” He also has met people who hated the idea of a hearse but are now owners. Peters and Hambly also are focused on keeping the event family friendly, particularly with the haunters. “We’re okay with some of the Halloween stuff, but there is a line,” Hambly said.

lage knew it would have to remove the properties when it passed the amendment to the TIF district. The properties were part of the TIF study to expand the district, but the property owners chose not to join the

LEMONT – In preparation for a First Street construction project, the village of Lemont will pay ComEd to relocate its overhead electrical lines from McCarthy Road to Schultz Street. The Lemont Village Board unanimously approved the work order during its Monday meeting. The order requires a
$55,000 initial payment and is estimated to cost $135,000. The relocation project will start the week of Aug. 26. The First Street construction project will go out to bid in mid-September. ComEd will move the power lines about 13 feet to the west to make room for the First Street project. In other action, the board voted to remove two pieces of property it had added to the Gateway Tax Increment

The Christopher D. Wheatley Memorial Foundation offers scholarships and makes donations to firefighter charities. Thirteen scholarships are given out each year, including: • Two to Lemont High School students for athletic leadership and for those pursuing fire and health science • Eight at the Romeoville Fire Academy, where Wheatley started his career; the scholarships are given to two students in each of the four annual classes for tuition and gear rental reimbursement • Two at the Chicago Fire Department Gold Badge Society, four year recurring • One for a fourth year medical student at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where Wheatley taught lance 15 in Chicago. Wheatley’s mother, Mary, credits Chicago 2nd Ward Alderman Bob Fioretti with leading the efforts to create the memorial.

Fioretti approached the Wheatley family about the bronze medallion shortly after Christopher’s death and spent the past couple of years designing and imple-
menting it. Although he hopes the city will not have much occasion to use it, he would like the bronze medallion to be a template for memorializing fallen firefighters. “Christopher Wheatley is just an embodiment of the city of Chicago,” he said. “He was the embodiment of true hard work and what it means to excel.” The ceremony included a bell ringing, called a 3-3-5, signifying return to quarters. This was followed by the unveiling of the memorial. Mary Wheatley said the memorial is a tribute to all firefighters and paramedics who serve Chicago.
“People will know that he was a firefighter and a paramedic for the city of Chicago and served and died for the department that he loved and the city that he loved,” she said.

LEMONT – Fallen Chicago firefighter and Lemont native Christopher Wheatley has been honored with a large bronze medallion memorial outside the Engine 5 fire station where he served in Chicago’s West Loop. A dedication ceremony was Saturday with friends, family and members of the fire department. Wheatley died in August 2010 after falling while climbing to the roof of a restaurant during a grease fire. The bronze medallion honors Wheatley’s service as a firefighter with Truck 2 and a paramedic with Ambu-

Four-way stop signs in place in Lemont LEMONT – The Illinois Department of Transportation
has placed four stop signs at the intersection of McCarthy and Walker roads in Lemont. IDOT is in the process of installing traffic signals at the intersection. Lemont Police Chief Kevin Shaughnessy said police officers will monitor the intersection as drivers adjust to the new traffic flow.
Lemont Park District entranceway reopened LEMONT – The renovated Centennial Campus entranceway, 16028 127th St., Lemont, opened Thursday. Patrons are asked to use this entrance when visiting Centennial Campus and The CORE, instead of the temporary entrance through the Old Quarry Middle School parking lot. Construction will continue, as landscaping and utility work are conducted.

A splendid taste of East Asia at Thipi Thai GLEN ELLYN – There’s nothing quite like the mix of sweet and savory flavors that you get from Thai food. Spiciness is a hallmark of many forms of Asian cuisine, and you’ll get that from Thai food, too. But the combination of opposing flavors sets Thai food apart. As a longtime fan of the cuisine, I had high hopes when I stopped by Thipi Thai in Glen Ellyn on a recent weeknight. And my dining companion, even more of an aficionado, was nearly chomping at the bit with hunger. Fortunately, we were not disappointed. From the enchanting decor to the delightful dishes, we were in for a terrifically memorable meal. Without hesitation, we placed our drink orders as soon as we saw the menu – we never pass up a chance to get Thai iced tea. It’s a strongly brewed iced tea with sugar and condensed milk. The milk and the sugar complement the bitterness of the tea rather than masking it, making for a sensation that engages your taste buds. For appetizers, I opted for the shumai steamed crabmeat dumplings served with soy sesame vinaigrette for dipping. It’s a common order for me, and Thipi Thai’s version was just right. My companion went for the coconut shrimp, which came with a pineapple mango sauce. “Perfectly sweet and tangy,” my dining companion said. On to the entrees. We’re both big fans of pad woonsen, which is what my companion ordered, but I thought I’d try something different and selected the orange beef. I’m only moderately tolerant of spicy food, but the menu showed just one pepper next to my choice – the scale appears to go up to three for items such as kung pao noodle chicken. One particularly spicy pepper caught me by sur-

prise, but otherwise it was just right, with the pineapple and mandarin orange slices providing the perfect contrast to the peppers and beef. I should have saved some to bring home, however,
because I left myself without any room for dessert. I probably would have chosen the “chocolate pyramid” – chocolate mousse with sauteed bananas over a rum sauce. I requested a few bites of my companion’s pad woonsen with chicken, and very much enjoyed the mix of cellophane noodles (I’ve seen them referred to as glass noodles elsewhere), chicken, egg and vegetables in a brown

garlic sauce. Thipi Thai has a high-ceilinged dining area, with an alcove toward the back that’s
up a flight of stairs. Prints of Asian scenes and delightful elephants carved from driftwood adorn the walls. We found the service to be excellent, attentive without being obtrusive. And the menu has plenty of dishes I’ve never tried before to tempt me to return.

Keefe keeps positive for Bradley Lemont native finds silver lining after season-ending injury By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com PEORIA – Getting her start with the sport of volleyball in the fourth grade, Courtney Keefe is set to enter uncharted waters over the next few months as she takes a redshirt year at Bradley University because of an injury. First hurting her right foot in the spring of 2012, the Lemont graduate is now recovering from a fracture that will cause her to miss the Braves’ 2013 campaign. She recently got out of a walking boot and began rehab last week, and she could be cleared for cardio work in a

few weeks. “Allie Falter is a redshirt junior this year and Alise Tupuritis is a redshirt senior,” Keefe said, “They’ve been helping me out, telling me what to expect. They have been awesome teammates. “It’s pretty weird because I definitely want to be playing as much as possible. I’m enjoying the break but I’d
much rather be playing.” A dominant player while at Lemont, finishing her prep career with 901 kills, Keefe has been a major contributor at the college level and her absence will leave a void for the Braves. A year ago, she started 25 matches, appeared in every game, and showed her true versatility by finishing fourth on the team in kills and second in digs. “That’s my favorite thing to talk about,” she said. “Not every player can do that, usually a player is stronger at either hitting or passing. If you can do both, that makes you kind of a go-to person. You are always out
there and people look to you. I love having that role.” As a team, Bradley has finished under .500 the past two years but Keefe feels a turnaround is not out of the question. And the junior will be there every step of the way as she is allowed to travel with the team and go to practices. “Even though our record didn’t show it, we got a lot done last year,” she said. “We learned a lot as a team. Going through every match, some of what we did was right and some of what we did was wrong, and we tried to build off that. “I’m excited about this year. We’ve been doing a lot
more together in the gym and out of the gym. Our team is a lot closer and it’s going to be a whole different atmosphere. We’ve got good team chemistry.” As for her future, after graduation and the end of her volleyball career, Keefe is majoring in elementary education but recently took a liking to another possible job. “I was talking to our athletic adviser recently and I am kind of interested in what she does,” Keefe said. “I will probably still do teaching because I love working with kids but I could end up being at a college. I wouldn’t mind being around sports for the rest of my life.”

Rambler volleyball relies on Wrobel Vicki Wrobel has been a major contributor for the Loyola volleyball team in her first two seasons. The incoming junior played in every set a year ago and led the Horizon League with 34 aces, and she finished the season with 202 digs and 96 assists. She also topped the Ramblers with 31 aces as a freshman and was seventh in the Horizon League in assists that year.
Pawelko getting her kicks for Flyers Sarah Pawelko is set to begin her junior season as a member of the Lewis University soccer team. The midfielder started 17 matches in 2012, tallying three goals and two assists. She took a redshirt season at Ball State in 2010 before joining the Flyers, where she played in 10 contests as a freshman in 2011.

Putna posted 27 shutouts for the Indians in his two varsity seasons while Hamann was a four-year varsity performer, finishing with 13 career goals and four assists while helping the defense post 61 shutouts over his career.

This allows the players to acclimate to that.” Also of concern is the fact that players come to camp
with varying degrees of conditioning levels, which the new guidelines also help with. “Some kids will be more in shape than others,” the trainer added. “Now kids won’t be put through long practice days anymore. It is beneficial in that way.”
With its preseason football acclimatization practice period, the IHSA has set specific guidelines for football practices through Aug. 27. Clinics, tryouts coming up for Lemont Athletic Club basketball SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LEMONT – The Lemont Athletic Club (LAC) youth travel basketball program is focusing on player development through professional instructional clinics for players and coaches in 2013.
A weekly player development clinic will be offered throughout the season, run by instructors from Beyond the Arc Academy. That staff includes current high school basketball coaches and former college players who work in small groups and
one-on-one to help develop players. LAC coaches will also participate in several coaching clinics before and during the season. In its ninth year, LAC has 11 teams, including teams for boys in grades 4-8 and girls in grades 5-8. With over 100
players and more than 20 coaches, the club is committed to skill enhancement for all players. LAC will be holding tryouts for the 2013-14 season Sept. 8-9 at the CORE complex in Lemont. Interested players can access the sched-
ule and register for tryouts at LAC’s website, www.lemont athleticclub.com The club claimed three league titles and 10 other top-three spots in the last basketball season, playing in leagues and tournaments across the Chicago area.

LEMONT – The safety of the players has always been a primary concern for Lemont football head coach Eric Michaelsen and his staff. So when the IHSA came in with new regulations for preseason practice, which began on Wednesday, the Indians’ head man had no beef. “I think we do a good job looking out for the kids as is,” Michaelsen said. “But if they are trying to make the game safer, I’m all for that. We want the kids to have a great experience and we want them to feel we are teaching them the right way. Anything we can do to make them feel safer and make their families feel safer, that is what we want to do.” The changes actually won’t have much of an affect on the Indians. School also started on August 14, eliminating the ability to have two-a-days. “It won’t be a huge thing for us,” the coach said. “We will already be in school. But we will be missing out on two days of full pads, which is the biggest difference. The first Saturday used to be the first day of full pads. Now that Saturday is just helmet and shoulder pads; we won’t go full pads until Tuesday.” Lemont trainer Jeff Kimak hadn’t heard word that the IHSA was planning to make changes, but upon seeing the new guidelines he thought it was a good thing. “It’s good to see something that everybody is going to have to take some responsibility for,” Kimak said. One thing that always needs to be monitored is the unpredictable August weather. The new guidelines are in place to help deal with any sweltering dog
