ADDISON – Donald Layne shaped Addison in every way he could for nearly 50 years, from teaching high school to serving on the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “He loved Addison,” said his wife and Addison Village Trustee Sylvia Layne. Donald died Sunday morning, and in they days since his passing, his family continues to be amazed by his active role in the community. “The one thing that I’m realizing now is the number of lives he touched,” said Mark Layne, Donald’s son. Donald began his career at York High School when it was still part of District 88. That was where his family said he coached former University of Illinois Athletic Director Ron Guenther. Mark Layne remembers his father, a loyal University of Illinois football fan, taking him to games every year when he was growing up. When he was ready for college, Mark Layne chose the university, where his dad had also been a student, because he said it felt

like home. “He really knew football backwards and forwards,” said Mark Layne about his dad. While he never experienced his dad’s coaching first-hand, Mark Layne said he continues to hear from his dad’s former players about his skills. When Don Layne started at Addison Trail High School, he coached football and wrestling, in addition to teaching physical education and driver’s education. Mark Layne is still impressed by how his father worked his way up from gym teacher to assistant principal in 1976. Seven years later, Don Layne was hired as Addison Trail’s fourth principal, and even after he retired in 1993, Don Layne gave more than a dozen years of service to the District 88 Board of Education. “I think, somehow, someway, he felt he had the ability to [serve] and he wanted to contribute,” Sylvia Layne said. Donald went on to be president of the Addison Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and most recently held the chamber’s treasurer position. He also did charity work

ADDISON – The Village Board recently gave the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) approval to conduct an area housing study in Addison. “Housing is a big issue for all of the suburbs right now,” said Director of Community Relations John Berley. The study is part of the Homes for a Changing Region project which helps municipalities develop long-term housing policy plans to serve current and future populations. The study will also include Wood Dale, Bensenville and Villa Park. Berley said CMAP tries to choose municipalities in the same region and housing market when it conducts Homes for a Changing Region projects, and he sees the benefit of it. “We’re also networking with our neighboring communities,” Berley said. The study is provided by an in-kind grant, and Berley said the village wouldn’t likely have the funds to conduct the study otherwise. Addison applied for the free study about a year ago after the village received a comprehensive plan update. Housing was just one part of the strategic plan. “We’re kind of built out,” he said. The study would most likely focus on suggestions for redevelopment, rather than new developments in the region, by using a variety of methods, from statistical analysis to focus groups. Over a nine to 10 month period, CMAP will develop a plan based on housing projections by considering the community’s current and future needs. The type and amount of senior housing, energy efficient homes or rental properties could be considerations. The study could also be a good tool for developers, which Berley hopes to see more of as the housing market bounces back. “This was kind of getting ahead of the curve a little coming out of the recession,” Berley said.

Sylvia Layne even discovered projects she didn’t know her husband was working on while she was going through his office this week. While he constantly gave back to his community, his wife said he always did so on his own terms and in his own way. Sylvia Layne said he took each opportunity as the day offered it. “He never pretended to be something that he was not,” she said of her late husband. Don Layne would have been 83 on Sept. 14. He particularly enjoyed working

with high school kids as a coach and educator. He and his wife raised three children of their own, Mark, Leslie and Robby, the last of whom was killed in an automobile accident a little over 20 years ago. Mark Layne said his father’s sense of humor suffered a little over the last few years, as he combated congestive heart failure, but he will always remember his dad’s jokes. “He was always cracking everybody up,” Mark said. A memorial visitation service was from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Addison Village Hall rotunda for Don Layne.

The real tragedy behind vision-stealing glaucoma is that most people afflicted with this eye disease do not even realize they have it. For the 37th year, hundreds of vendors and more than 20 food stalls will set up shop at the DuPage County Fairgrounds for an all-night flea market, according to a Zurko Promotions news release. The All-Nite Flea Market returns Saturday from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. the next day. The open air event will feature vendors from as far away as Texas, according to Jim Decker of Zurko Promotions. named one of the top 10 flea markets in the country by the History Channel and National Geographic, according to the release, and typically draws between 6,000 and 8,000 people. Cassidy embraces new lifestyle after deadly fire By SARAH SMALL ssmall@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – This time last August, Jason Cassidy was lying in a hospital bed at Loyola University Medical Center’s Burn Center being treated for smoke inhalation and third-degree burns across almost half of his body. A year later, 26-year-old Cassidy lounges on his living room couch on a Tuesday after work. His body is free of bandages, but scars are visible on his legs and arms from the flames of a house fire that claimed the life of Paula Morgan on the eve of her 25th birthday last July. Cassidy is finished with doctor visits now, he doesn’t go for physical therapy anymore and he’s back to working full time at a Lombard-based landscaping company. He also bears the mark of someone who’s done quite a bit of growing up in the past year. “The whole perspective I had on life was altered,” he said. “A year later, you can’t

let anything slow you down.” Late last fall, after Cassidy was able to take care of himself again, he moved back into the house in Villa Park that he rented with friends. He soon realized, though, that he wasn’t interested in the party atmosphere that still filled the house, and in April he moved into an apartment in Lombard with his dad’s sister. It’s quieter here, he said, and he likes it that way. When he moved out of his dad’s house, where he’d recovered, Bob Cassidy encouraged his son to embrace life. “I said, ‘You have a life to live, go out and live it,’” Bob Cassidy said. “He’s really taken that to heart and that’s what he’s doing. I’m very happy with how it’s all gone and how he’s come out of this.” July 22 marked the oneyear anniversary of the fire. Cassidy said he went to work and treated it as a normal day. He considered writing something on Facebook to mark the date, but instead posted a comment on a commemorative vid-

His father also treated the day as any other, but took some time to reflect. “There was a moment in time when I did sit back,” Bob Cassidy said. “I just looked at it and thanked God that I was strong enough to help him get through it and that he was strong enough to get through it. Jason Cassidy said his life is ordinary again, and he tries to keep it that way. There are, however, the obvious hangups. There are the ongoing court proceedings for Todd Mandoline, the Villa Park man who allegedly started the house fire and was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated arson and other crimes on a ninecount indictment. ings and infrastructure and things like that,” he said. “But there are eight years to go, and if it’s not going to be there, we won’t spend money on all that.” DuPage County Fair Manager Ellen Sietmann said attendance for this year’s event may have been as high as 116,000 across five days, an increase of 4,000 over last year. She also estimated the fair turned a profit, in part thanks to a larger number of sponsors, although exact figures were unavailable be-

cause receipts and payments still were being processed. That success comes only a year after the county hired consultants to assess the fair’s falling attendance and lack of revenue. Eckhoff said while he thought attendees would appreciate a bigger venue for events such as the fair, finding a space larger than the 42-acre spot the fairgrounds inhabit would prove difficult. “We’re looking for alternative sites, but right now nobody has come up with any,”

he said. Sietmann said next year’s fair – the event’s 60th anniversary – already is in the planning phase. She said she welcomes feedback, including from the County Board, but also said the fairgrounds host more than just the fair. “We do want to meet with Chairman [Dan] Cronin and give him our ideas of what we would like to improve,” she said. “The fair is one week and it’s very important, but we want to do things for the general public year round.”

Although this year’s DuPage County Fair saw increased attendance and likely will be profitable for the second year in a row, county officials are considering changing the location of the fairgrounds. “Their lease goes through 2020, so we’re going to have some discussions about what’s the best use of that property in the future,” County Board member Grant

Eckhoff said. “It’s a small area now for a county fair, and it is sort of shoehorned in there.” Eckhoff is a member of the County Fair and Exposition Authority, which approves and manages money from the Fair and Exposition Fund. Sullivan’s Program to cater to the needs of the youth that comprise the majority of heroin addicts in Chicago’s collar counties. Dr. Jeffrey Johnson, the medical director of inpatient chemical dependency services at Central DuPage Hospital, said those dying of overdoses are not dying due to lack of immediate care. Rather, more resources focused on sustained, day-to-day recovery are needed. “The ongoing maintenance, the medications and the ongoing counseling to prevent relapse – that’s where you need more resources,” he said. DuPage County Health De-

partment Communications Manager David Hass said the county has no specific program for heroin addiction treatment, but that the department’s RxBOX program has collected 14 tons of unused prescription medication since 2009. The Health Department views its role in the fight against addiction as one of prevention, Hass said, not of treatment. “We work with hospitals, schools, law enforcement and other community organizations to educate,” he said. “We think that is the best use of our resources, working as a coordinated effort so we know what they’re doing and they

know what we’re doing and we’re united towards prevention.” In response to interview requests, County Board Chairman Dan Cronin released a statement that said he is “very concerned about the epidemic use of heroin especially by our teens.” Cronin also said he has met with Berlin twice to promote awareness and prevention. DuPage County’s Psychological Services Department offers limited resources for those in need of addiction treatment. Thomas Sayers, administrator for the Community Services Department,

DuPage County saw 15 heroin and drug-related deaths in the first two-and-a-half weeks of July. Among the dead is John Dudek, a 15-year-old from Bartlett who overdosed on heroin July 10. DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin has called the rise in heroin use, particularly in young adults, a “public health crisis.” But for those already suffering from addiction to heroin or other substances, there are limited resources available at the county level. Eileen Sullivan, coordi-

nator of the Young Adult Recovery Program at Cadence Health, said that the “epidemic is bigger than what we’re ready for.” “There needs to be more invested in treatment, absolutely,” she said. “We can’t meet the needs right now with what we have. There are too many young people affected and too many tragedies, and it’s just gotten to a point where we need more resources and we need a team approach.” Cadence Health, which is based out of Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, offers a 24-hour addiction phone line, as well as detox, residential and outpatient treatment and therapy. Park district offers variety of ways to stay fit Addison is lucky to have a truly terrific park district, with big parks, pools and even a health club and golf facilities. DuPage County is abundant in forests, bike trails and parks. It shouldn’t be hard for us to eat right and stay in shape – but it is! Shortly after I started COMMUNITY working at the library, about VOICE a year ago, my boss, Library John Director Mary Medjo Me Zengue, challenged me to inKokoris corporate healthy living into our library programs. People don’t always associate good health with going to the library. It’s not something libraries have always talked about. But lifelong education – the central mission of libraries around the world – certainly involves learning how to live a healthy lifestyle. For decades we’ve carried cookbooks, exercise videos and other materials that fly off the shelves. We wanted to take the next step. We’re doing whatever we can think of to get our patrons and our staff into peak condition. We’ve partnered with Whole Foods Market to bring frequent healthy eating presentations to Addison. As a result, patrons have had the opportunity to sample smoothies, quinoa and berries, in addition to taking home plenty of recipes. We’ve also borrowed some of the park district’s popular instructors to lead free, monthly Zumba and yoga classes. A marathoner has helped us teach the basics of running, and insurance industry professionals were brought in to teach the basics of Medicare and the Affordable Care Act. We’re also pleased to offer our second annual Children’s Health Fair next month. The fair is the product of collaboration between the Kiwanis Club of Addison, Adventist Glen Oaks Hospital, A to Z Pediatric and countless other groups and individuals in the community. While we’re still working out the final details, we hope to offer information and free health screenings to everyone visiting the library. We’ll also be running a blood drive. The fair takes place Sept. 7 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Families can drop by as they check out books and movies for the weekend. Let us know what you’d like to see at the library and we’ll make it happen! If courts rule that pensions must be treated as contracts, states have very little flexibility in modifying them. This makes it very difficult to undo the irresponsible promises of past politicians. The pension crisis wasn’t unexpected either. Economists and politicians have been warning about it for years, but the alarms went unheeded. Public pensions are simply not an exciting subject for discussion. Rafael Rivadeneira, an Illinois local politician, has been trying to draw attention to the crisis for years. When he ran for DuPage County Board in 2012, he commented on the issue of overly generous public pensions for part-time positions in local government. He has a long battle ahead – Illinois has the largest pension funding gap of any state. According to Moody’s, the funding gap is almost $133 billion. Moody’s calculates the median state’s funding gap at 45 percent of annual revenues.

The funding gap in Illinois? A whopping 241 percent. Just recently, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel predicted a budget shortfall of $1 billion by 2015. What does the pension funding gap mean in human terms? It translates to enormous tax increases or draconian spending cuts in the future. Both of these policies hurt middle-class Americans. If pensions cannot be legally reduced or modified, the required spending will crowd out financial needs in other important areas, such as education or healthcare. This would result in devastating consequences for the state, businesses and families. Detroit is a real-life example of what can happen when politicians focus on short-term gain without considering the long-term financial consequences. In the future, we should learn from Detroit’s example and start reforming our pension systems now.

sponding to something, doing everything we can, and later we find out it was set intentionally.” Firefighters see a lot of calls during the course of a year, some with good outcomes and some with bad outcomes, Heimbecker said. A year later, the fire that killed Morgan and changed Cassidy’s life is one he reflects on with sadness. “For me, a year later it was still on my mind,” he said. “I often think about Paula’s son Nicholas and how he’s doing. It’s a lot of different emotions. Happy that Jason’s doing well, and I think about Nicholas and Paula’s family.”

Train worries Some senior residents of Downers Grove are old enough to recall the train derailment that totaled the Main Street station. Fortunately, it didn’t involve the long chains of tank cars full of flammable materials that are common today. There must be some regulation that is being ignored. God forbid that a derailment of a string of dozens of tankers would happen, spreading an inferno for blocks of homes north and south of the tracks. Why can’t the strings of tank cars be interrupted with strings of non-flammable box cars, or other cargo cars? At least then, a partial derailment might involve fewer flammable cars.

Lisle’s real problem The “dilapidated” farmhouses are not leaving a terrible impression on visitors entering the “new, upgraded, wonderful downtown Lisle,” the vacant shops are. I drive downtown everyday and barely notice the three farmhouses surrounded by trees. I do, however, notice the vacant stores and wonder when we will actually get businesses that will lease and prosper in downtown Lisle. I have had an ongoing sewer issue for the past several years. he culprit is tree roots and I have been told by a number of plumbing and sewer outits that the solution is to replace it. Of course my sewer line travels beneath my relatively new landscaped yard and also the front walkway and I’ve been putting of this project. I have done some poking around and discovered that an alternative to digging would be to insert a liner so the tree roots don’t grow back. Is this a viable solution?

Sewer lining is an excellent solution. Provided that the existing line doesn’t have signiicant shits, separations, or misalignments that would impede the insertion of a liner, “trenchless” as it is commonly referred to, may very well be the answer for you. To ind out if your line is a candidate, you will need a clear picture of your entire line so the line may be inspected for pipe integrity. In the case where tree roots are present, a clear Mike Borowski visual on the camera will typically irst require a thorough cleaning of the entire line. A splendid taste of East Asia at Thipi Thai GLEN ELLYN – There’s nothing quite like the mix of sweet and savory flavors that you get from Thai food. Spiciness is a hallmark of many forms of Asian cuisine, and you’ll get that from Thai food, too. But the combination of opposing flavors sets Thai food apart. As a longtime fan of the cuisine, I had high hopes when I stopped by Thipi Thai in Glen Ellyn on a recent weeknight. And my dining companion, even more of an aficionado, was nearly chomping at the bit with hunger. Fortunately, we were not disappointed. From the enchanting decor to the delightful dishes, we were in for a terrifically memorable meal. Without hesitation, we placed our drink orders as soon as we saw the menu – we never pass up a chance to get Thai iced tea. It’s a strongly brewed iced tea with sugar and condensed milk. The milk and the sugar complement the bitterness of the tea rather than masking it, making for a sensation that engages your taste buds. For appetizers, I opted for the shumai steamed crabmeat dumplings served with soy sesame vinaigrette for dipping. It’s a common order for me, and Thipi Thai’s version was just right. My companion went for the coconut shrimp, which came with a pineapple mango sauce. “Perfectly sweet and tangy,” my dining companion said. On to the entrees. We’re both big fans of pad woonsen, which is what my companion ordered, but I thought I’d try something different and selected the orange beef. I’m only moderately tolerant of spicy food, but the menu showed just one pepper next to my choice – the scale appears to go up to three for items such as kung pao noodle chicken. One particularly spicy pepper caught me by sur-

up a flight of stairs. Prints of Asian scenes and delightful elephants carved from driftwood adorn the walls. We found the service to be excellent, attentive without being obtrusive. And the menu has plenty of dishes I’ve never tried before to tempt me to return.

Different feel for preseason football practices By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com Fall sports officially began practicing on Wednesday, but football teams are being forced to work a little bit differently starting this year. New practice rules set by the IHSA have altered the way coaching staffs are allowed to operate summer practices that take place before school hours return. Some schools, like York, IC Catholic and Montini, shifted to normal practice hours this week as the start of the football preseason coincided with school starting, so the limitations on early practices only had a minimal impact. Others will be limited for a little more than a week. The two topics that most coaches brought up were that three-hour practices put an emphasis on efficiency, and

that prohibiting teams from tackling until closer to the first game could cause problems. “You really have to plan your practices to hit all three areas,” Montini coach Chris Andriano said. “In the preseason that’s hard to do. We’re going to have to be very organized and very smart.” Andriano used to have Montini run separate practices for offense, defense and special teams. He believes the limited practice time will impact special teams the most. York coach Steve Nye mentioned that most of the base offensive and defensive concepts were worked on during summer practices. It’s the blitz packages and other more intricate things that will get worked on now. The limited practice time and tackling time makes that tougher. It also makes it tougher on the younger levels, where play-

ers are still learning the basics of tackling. “I think it’s really difficult for freshmen to be able to get a team prepared to play in two and a half weeks when they really can’t hit until 10 days before the first game,” Nye said. “They haven’t really done any tackling. You want to teach them the proper way and the proper technique, but it proves to be pretty difficult. In order to learn how to tackle you have to tackle.” The general consensus among coaches was that no one argued with the concept behind the new rules. Safety is the priority. However, the complaints came in smaller nit-picks over how the changes were implemented. “You’re going to find out what happens because of the limited contact and practice time,” Glenbard East coach John Walters said. “It’s going

D’Ambrose delivers for Penguins AT grad guides turnaround for Youngstown State volleyball By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – After playing for a powerhouse volleyball club and a competitive high school program, Casey D’Ambrose experienced something new during her first two years at Youngstown State: losing. The Penguins went 2-27 during D’Ambrose’s freshman season and were 5-24 the year after. The Addison Trail grad is a product of the prestigious Sports Performance club and was used to winning in her youth volleyball career. Last year things got much better for the Penguins. They went 15-14, the best season the program had in 13 years, and D’Ambrose was right at the heart of it as the team’s setter. “When I first got to campus they weren’t really any expectations,” D’Ambrose said. “I think it’s just a really different mindset. Now everybody wants the same thing. We have the same goal and we have a great support system. “When I committed here it was a rebuilding year. We’ve just been rebuilding the program for the past four years and it’s been a great experience.” D’Ambrose was the only player on the team to play in all 112 sets last year and with a year to go has the seventh-most career assists in the program’s history with 1,699. She played as a defensive specialist as a freshman and took over as starting setter as a sophomore. Coach Mark Hardaway helped guide the Penguins’ improvement last year in his first year in charge. That team had just one senior so D’Ambrose’s expectations are even higher this season. “I think we have a really strong team right now,” D’Ambrose said. “We have all of our starters coming back. We have a very large senior class and we bonded so well. I think last year we just came out and were ready to make a change.” The change has lifted spir-

team. As the starting setter, D’Ambrose has to keep the team organized and on task. She revels in the responsibility. “I love being able to run the offense,” D’Ambrose said. “I love being able to trick the other team with the plays we run. It’s a really cool experience with how we run the court.” The senior setter, who

stayed on campus in the summer to train, started volleyball at a young age and said she didn’t have much choice of position once she realized she wouldn’t be tall enough to be a hitter. The 5-foot-9 D’Ambrose has grown into the position ever since. Being a setter allowed her to share an extra connection with her older sister, Dani,

who played at Northern Illinois. When Casey was a freshman at Addison Trail she was able to set Dani, who was a senior hitter that year. For all of Casey’s volleyball accomplishments, that still ranks highly. “I loved being able to play with my sister,” she said. “I started on varsity as a freshman and I was able to set Dani.”

Midfield regular A year after earning a consistent spot in the Benedictine starting lineup, Julio Lopez (Addison Trail) will be one of the leaders for the Benedictine University men’s soccer. Lopez played in all 17 matches for the Eagles as a junior midfielder last year. He started 13 matches with one goal and two assists.

Star scorer Carmelo DiFranco (Addison Trail) was an efficient scorer for Dominican men’s soccer last season. DiFranco didn’t

start any matches but appeared 11 times as a substitute, and managed to score six goals and create four assists. The Stars had a fantastic season with an 18-3-1 record and a Northern Athletic Conference title. DiFranco, now a junior, will hope to prove he can consistently score as a starter as well.

From Blazers to Vikings A pair of Addison Trail graduates are continuing their athletic careers at Augustana. Jose Martinez will be a sophomore cross country runner. Martinez ran in four races as a freshman. Katie Keller will be a junior middle blocker for the Vikings’ women’s volleyball team. In her first two years on campus Keller

has seen regular playing time and will be looking to become a key contributor this season.

CCIW runners Four Willowbrook grads return as runners for College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin cross country teams this fall. Isaac Trostle (Lombard) will be a senior at Augustana. Elizabeth Lundine (Villa Park), who was 22nd in the CCIW meet, heads into her junior year with the Vikings. David Schouson (Lombard) will be a sophomore at Elmhurst College and Rachel Gibson (Lombard) will be a senior for the Bluejays.
