Scattering the remains on water is legal under Federal Aviation Administration regulations, and the Martineks receive permission on land through the property’s owner. RIVERSIDE – Looking up in the sky near Lake Michigan, one might see a small plane flying above the water helping family members move on after a loved one’s passing. Egress, a Riverside-based cremation scattering service, is celebrating 20 years of business this year. Its founders, Susan and Dennis Martinek, started their unique business to help families in need of closure in a meaningful, environmentally friendly way. “It’s a great cause and less harmful on the environment,” Sara Martinek, daughter of Susan and Dennis and business developer of Egress, said. “It’s a niche market. We’re solving problems for people in a great way.” Susan Martinek said one reason people seek them out is the expense involved in burying a loved one. “It’s one of the best things to do and cheapest,” Susan Martinek said. “If it’s applicable, it’s a wonderful celebration of their life.” The Martineks take their

The family revamped the idea and Dennis Martinek continues to fly for the business. “He’d rather fly than do anything,” Susan Martinek said. He made her fly to Geneva on their first date, she said. “I’m not saying it’s for everyone, but we’ve helped many families move on,” Susan Martinek said. “I feel very proud of what we do.” Egress does not offer cremation services, but they are approved by the Cremation Society of Illinois and the Cremation Association of America. The Brookfield Zoo announced the birth of the calf to Allie, a 26-year-old bottle nose dolphin, earlier this week. The unnamed baby was born about 11 a.m. Aug. 2 and died Thursday morning. Staff stepped in and began providing CPR in an attempt to resuscitate her, but efforts were unsuccessful and the calf died. According to the release, young calves can fade quickly. The release cited studies from a 43-year-old wild dolphin research program in Sarasota, Fla., that show that moralities of neonatal calves during the first 30 days of life account for the largest rate of loss to dolphin populations in the wild.

LYONS – The village of Lyons held its first Community Market in Veteran’s Park, 8225 Ogden Ave., on Monday. The Lyons Community Market will be open each Monday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Oct. 28. Commuters can enjoy free coffee as they shop for locally grown and fresh produce and bakery items, Lyons Mayor Christopher Getty said. On a mission Brookfield residents discuss involvement with Peace Corps By DOUG GRAHAM msleditorial@shawmedia.com BROOKFIELD – Joe Daniels is leaving his hometown of Brookfield for the Peace Corps, just weeks after another Brookfield resident, Hallie Kyrias, returned from her two-year Peace Corps adventure. Although both of the young adults, who’ve never met each other, made the decision to leave their American lives behind to help people they’ve never met, each came to that decision in different ways. Daniels, 22, said his love of volunteering sparked his interest in the Peace Corps. “In high school, I was a member of Interact Club,” Daniels, a graduate of Lyons Township High School’s Class of 2009, said. “[The club] went on three spring break work trips down south. In college, I have also gone on three spring break work trips, and have also found other places to volunteer.” For Kyrias, 25, it was
the travel bug that initially brought her to the Peace Corps. She studied abroad in New Zealand during college. “It was there that I fell in love with travel, adventure and meeting new people from

Continued from page 7 all over the world,” Kyrias said. “I traveled to Samoa, where I met Peace Corps volunteers for the first time, and after talking to them about what they do and how they live, the idea of joining the Peace Corps was planted in my head.” Daniels too talked with Peace Corps volunteers before committing to becoming one himself. He has a friend serving as an environmental volunteer in Nicaragua who told him about the experience. The more he heard from her, the better he felt about going. Ready or not, Daniels departed for Nicaragua on Tuesday. He said he’s worried about overcoming the language barrier in his Spanish speaking host nation. If Kyrias’ experience is anything to go off of, Daniels has good reason to be wary. “The hardest adjustment was the language,” Kyrias said. “I went down there with pretty mediocre Spanish, and so being instantly surrounded by it and going through intensive Peace Corps agriculture and Spanish training all day everyday was very mentally draining at first.” Kyrias said the rest of the the major changes – including eating Panamanian food and using a dug-out latrine – were much easier to handle. Given the environmental realities one faces while living in the Panamanian jungle, like Kyrias did, you might have thought she would have said the hardest adjustment was having to deal with tarantulas, snakes and scorpions. But Kyrias, unfazed, said those things were “[not] anything a machete couldn’t take care of.” In addition to casually macheteing creatures that most only encounter in nightmares, Kyrias also dealt with parasitic fly larvae growing in her head for a month. But Kyrias seemed to take it all in stride. “I never felt particularly threatened in a way that I couldn’t handle, although my mother would tell you differently,” Kyrias said. Daniels said he has been told by Peace Corps veterans to prepare himself for a life

Also, that he should be less concerned with material things and to expect to be the victim of some petty thefts. “I’ve prepared myself for more dangerous conditions than in the United States,” Daniels said. “But when you really think about it, you can be robbed on the streets in Chicago, too.” Daniels said, just hours from the beginning of his adventure, he felt a mixture of being really excited and a bit nervous. “I’m definitely going to miss chocolate,” Daniels confessed. “I’ve become slightly addicted, and it’s hard to come by there from what I understand.” Kyrias said as hard as it was to leave America, it also was difficult to come back. “When I left site it was a bit depressing because after two years of living there I had made some strong relationships,” Kyrias said. “They threw me a big going away party, and we were all crying by the end.” While on site, Kyrias said she led several projects to better the lives of the community, including establishing several coffee farms and constructing a fish farming tank. She was proud of her work but was sad that she wouldn’t be there to see the fruits of her labor. She said the tanks won’t have fish to harvest for at least six months and the coffee harvesting operations will not begin for at least three years. When asked what Kyrias will take away from her two years in Panama, she was introspective. “I’ve gone through some of the most physically and emotionally challenging trials of my life,” Kyrias said. “But now, I feel more confident to say that I can handle anything that comes my way, because I’ve most likely been through something more demanding.”

8SOUND OFF Race on the weekend On the recent bicycle race in Elmhurst: Possibly I missed something, and was not aware, but it seemed like the timeframe for that during the day on a weekday could be better planned. I think I made about three different attempts to try to get to the library and streets were shut down. I know it was the first time they ever did this, but my opinion and suggestion, would be maybe to try it on a Sunday or Saturday morning early in the morning before businesses and things are open.

If you research the history of the term “the dog days of summer” at your library, you will find that the ancient Greeks and Romans actually were the ones who first began associating the “Dog Star,” Sirius, with the extremely hot summer weather. The dog days originally were the days when Sirius rose at the same time as sunrise (alCOMMUNITY though this is no longer the case), and the ancient Greeks VOICE and Romans believed that the Dan star, Sirius, was the cause of Powers the hot, sultry weather. Dog days were believed to be an evil time when seas boiled, wines turned sour, creatures became languid and dogs grew mad. Even man became lackluster and uninspired. The dog days generally are considered to be in session from the middle of July through the middle of August. Lethargy in hot weather and leisurely activities during the summer months seem to be the norms even today. This is not the case, however, in the world of public libraries. During the summer months in the public library world, the biggest event, of course, is summer reading. In Lyons, we’ve had an extremely successful program this year. The planning and implementation of the program alone takes about 30 hours a day (seemingly, anyway). At the Lyons Public Library, in addition to the time constraints of the summer reading program, we continue with other regular programming. We place more books orders during the summer than at other times, and we just started our huge recycling drive (come to the library for information). August also is the time that we at the Lyons Public Library have decided to begin an all library materials weeding program. The village of Lyons started a Community Market for the first time ever, which will be every Monday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Oct. 28. The Lyons Public Library has a booth at the market. Getting our library’s booth together was more work than you might imagine. Although, I must admit, it was fun and exciting “work.” While the rest of the world is trying to remain unhurried and laid-back during the dog days of summer, remember that your local public library is working harder than ever for its patrons. A thumbs up to the Brookfield Public Library on its recent purchase of a MakerBot Replicator 2 3-D printer. It’s nice to see the library staying on top of technology. At $2,199 a pop, these machines aren’t cheap. But, the library’s printer will be available to the public for use, making it accessible to those who could not (or would not) buy one for themselves. A review of news reports about 3-D printing shows the many applications these machines can have now and in the future. It’s no longer the stuff of science fiction to believe that just as every home has a computer these days, soon we all might print all sorts of projects for ourselves.

BROOKFIELD – Countryside Police arrested a 16-yearold boy in connection with a string of burglaries that occurred late Aug. 4 and early Aug. 5 in Brookfield. Police arrested the teenager at a gas station in Countryside, where he and a Chicago man allegedly used a stolen credit
card to make a purchase. Once in custody, police said the teenager admitted to entering several unlocked vehicles parked near the fire station at 9248 Broadway Ave. He then led police to a row of bushes and a sewer basin lid where he had hidden stolen items, including two stereo faceplates, an iPod dock and a cellphone.

Riverside Police Department has taken advantage of this grant program since its inception. RIVERSIDE – Riverside police issued a community alert Aug. 7 after a 14-year-old Berwyn girl was approached by a man in a white van near Herrick and Herbert roads. Police said they received the report Aug. 3 at 6:30 p.m. Police said the girl was riding her bike eastbound on Herrick Road from Herbert Road when man in a dirty, white minivan pulled up next to her, pointed at her and said “come here.” The girl told police she felt afraid and turned around and rode back to her friend’s house
where she made the report. Police said the van was described as a white minivan, possibly a Dodge Caravan, with sliver hubcaps or rims. The man was described as white, with curly hair and in his 50s. The van was last seen going eastbound on Herrick toward Harlem Avenue. Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel said in a news release that other area police departments have been notified, but none have reported any similar incidents. Area schools also have been notified, Weitzel said, to have the information when school opens.

La Grange resident Brian P. Davis has been named system vice president and chief marketing officer of the new health system created by the merger of Naperville-based Edward Hospital & Health Services and Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare. Davis joined Edward in 1998 and has overseen government relations and marketing. He serves on the Plainfield Advisory Task Force on Economic Development and the Advisory Board for the DuPage County FORWARD initiative to fight childhood obesity. He is a former board member of the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce and former adjunct instructor at Lewis University in Romeoville. Hertz Rent-A-Car moves locations in Countryside Hertz Rent-A-Car will move back to its previous location at 35 E. Plainfield Road, likely within the next 60 days. The rental car agency has been operating out of the Westfield Ford dealership at 6200 La Grange Road and wanted to move back into its own building. The exemptions, the phaseout thresholds and the line between the 26-percent and 28-percent AMT brackets have been raised. The new exemptions are $51,900 for singles and heads of households, $80,800 for couples filing jointly or qualifying widows or widowers and $40,400 for marrieds filing individually. Phaseouts of exemptions start at $115, 400 for single taxpayers and heads of households, $153,900 for couples filing jointly and half that for marrieds filing individually. The exemptions will be phased out totally at $323,000 for singles, $477,100 for couples filing jointly and half that for those filing individually. For 2013, the AMT rate is 26-percent for the first $179,500 of taxable income (AMTI less exemptions) or $89,750 for couples filing individually, and 28-percent for income over that. A splendid taste of East Asia at Thipi Thai GLEN ELLYN – There’s nothing quite like the mix of sweet and savory flavors that you get from Thai food. Spiciness is a hallmark of many forms of Asian cuisine, and you’ll get that from Thai food, too. But the combination of opposing flavors sets Thai food apart. As a longtime fan of the cuisine, I had high hopes when I stopped by Thipi Thai in Glen Ellyn on a recent weeknight. And my dining companion, even more of an aficionado, was nearly chomping at the bit with hunger. Fortunately, we were not disappointed. From the enchanting decor to the delightful dishes, we were in for a terrifically memorable meal. Without hesitation, we placed our drink orders as soon as we saw the menu – we never pass up a chance to get Thai iced tea. It’s a strongly brewed iced tea with sugar and condensed milk. The milk and the sugar complement the bitterness of the tea rather than masking it, making for a sensation that engages your taste buds. For appetizers, I opted for the shumai steamed crabmeat dumplings served with soy sesame vinaigrette for dipping. It’s a common order for me, and Thipi Thai’s version was just right. My companion went for the coconut shrimp, which came with a pineapple mango sauce. “Perfectly sweet and tangy,” my dining companion said. On to the entrees. We’re both big fans of pad woonsen, which is what my companion ordered, but I thought I’d try something different and selected the orange beef. I’m only moderately tolerant of spicy food, but the menu showed just one pepper next to my choice – the scale appears to go up to three for items such as kung pao noodle chicken. One particularly spicy pepper caught me by sur-

because I left myself without any room for dessert. I probably would have chosen the “chocolate pyramid” – chocolate mousse with sauteed bananas over a rum sauce. I requested a few bites of my companion’s pad woonsen with chicken, and very much enjoyed the mix of cellophane noodles (I’ve seen them referred to as glass noodles elsewhere), chicken, egg and vegetables in a brown

up a flight of stairs. Prints of Asian scenes and delightful elephants carved from driftwood adorn the walls. We found the service to be excellent, attentive without being obtrusive. And the menu has plenty of dishes I’ve never tried before to tempt me to return.

Riverside-Brookfield pitcher Will Kincanon ended his recruiting process when he committed to Middle Tennessee State University last week. By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com RIVERSIDE – When Will Kincanon had a breakout junior year and a strong summer to follow, more and more college programs gave the Riverside Brookfield pitcher attention. Ultimately, it was one of the first schools to recruit Kincanon that will see the RB star take the mound in its colors. Kincanon committed to Middle Tennessee State last week. He said the school, and specifically pitching coach Skyler Meade, has been re-
cruiting him the longest. “He started recruiting me before everybody else, before everybody knew about me,” Kincanon said. “I kind of blew up a little bit because I went to showcases.” MTSU is located in Murfreesboro, about 35 miles southeast of Nashville. The location of the school also played a factor in Kincanon’s decision. “I definitely like the area around the school in Nashville,” he said. “I like Nashville a lot. There’s a lot of things to do there. That was big for me.” On the mound during the

spring, Kincanon emerged as one of the top pitchers in the state. He was named to the Class 3A All-State team by the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association after leading the Bulldogs to the Metro Suburban Conference title, a regional championship and a school record for wins in a season (32). As Kincanon’s profile
grew, the recruiting attention picked up. He admitted the attention is good at first, but it can become stressful. Kincanon was happy to make his decision early and finish the process before his senior year of high school started. “Really, it’s relieving,” Kincanon said. “It was definitely a tough decision, but it’s good to have it behind me. “I just wanted to get it over with before I started senior season for baseball and everything so I have it off my chest. I feel like it was the best place for me even though I was really considering Kansas State and Creighton. I felt it was the
right time so I got the scholarship and I committed.” The Blue Raiders went 2828 this past spring and held an 11-19 record in the Sun Belt. The school made the switch to Conference USA and will begin play in that league starting this fall. Kincanon said playing in a respected conference while having the chance to play right away sealed the deal for him. “One thing that was big in my process was if I was going to have a spot right away,” he said. “I think there I’m going to have a weekend starting spot right when I get on campus.”

RB connection continues for St. Joseph football Former high school teammates Billy VandeMerkt (Riverside Brookfield, Riverside) and Watoris Slater (Riverside Brookfield, La Grange) made major contributions to the St. Joseph’s College football team last fall and should connect for more this year. VandeMerkt, a senior quarterback, threw for 2,417 yards and 25 touchdowns. Slater, a junior wide receiver, had six receptions for 99 yards and caught a pair of TDs from VandeMerkt. Slater also was named Special Teams Player of the Year for the Pumas. Look for the former RB duo to connect on more pass plays this season.

Brown, who was a four-time all-conference pick for the Bulldogs in high school, played in 16 matches and made eight starts last season. Brown’s Grinnell teammate, Ben Warner (St. Ignatius/Riverside), also should see major time for the Pioneers. Warner, who will be a junior midfielder, played in all 18 matches last year, scoring two goals and assisting on six more. He earned a second-team all-Midwest Conference nod.

The Roosevelt University men’s soccer program is in its infancy. The Lakers’ debut season was last fall, and T.J. Armic (Riverside Brookfield, Riverside) was a part of it. After spending a year at Triton College, Armic joined the Lakers as one of three sophomores on the roster. This fall he will be the only junior because the other two sophomores from last year are no longer with the team. The midfielder made 11 starts and played in all 17 matches for the Lakers, who went 2-13-2 last year.

Ground rules for gridiron practices in effect By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com Fall sports officially can begin practicing today, but things will be slightly different for high school football teams. The IHSA tinkered with the rules for the first couple of weeks of fall practices, but the changes aren’t affecting each team and coaching staff the same way. The limited hours, which were created in part to avoid health issues in the August heat, aren’t a massive change for most teams. However, with just three hours to practice, it creates a need to be more efficient with that time. Lyons Township barely is affected by the alteration due to the fact that school hours start on Thursday with two administration days. That
IHSA football practice guidelines With its preseason football acclimatization practice period, the IHSA has set specific guidelines for football practices through Aug. 27. Curtin still was in favor of the changes for the most part. “Any coach needs to make sure we’re putting safety first,” Curtin said. “It’s a step in the right direction. The system is definitely better in the sense that we’re putting some requirements on how long we can go.” Other nearby schools don’t have the same school calendar, so they will have more of the altered practices. Morton starts school on Aug. 26 and Nazareth starts Monday. “I think most people follow a similar kind of schedule anyway,” said LT coach Kurt Weinberg. “If they want to make it similar across the board it’s not a terrible thing.” Weinberg said the biggest difference for his schedule is that two-a-day practices now require a longer gap in between practice. This has more
of an affect on the younger levels, where kids don’t have the ability to drive and leave campus for that time. “That’s tough with those lower levels that don’t have the opportunity to leave or drive,” Weinberg said. “So now you have this big chunk of time without the mobility and having the ability to leave.” The next step in the changes likely will relate to summer practices. Curtin and Weinberg assumed summer workouts will be regulated, but they weren’t sure how yet. This could possibly mean the end of the summer getaway trips where teams head to local colleges for camps. “There’s really no official policy in terms of our summer practices,” Weinberg said. “We follow the same schedule in the summer, but some people do whatever they want.”

The Riverside Public Library Timeline of important dates …..
April 21, 1927 Referendum passed establishing a library and levying a tax for this purpose. April 17, 1928 First Library Board elected. June 25, 1920 Bond issue referendum to construct a building for $75,000.00 passed 120-70. February 8, 1930 By election of the people, the Library Act was amended to permit the library to be built in any park in the Village under exclusive control and supervision of library directors. April 11, 1930 Hired Grace Gilman as librarian prior to opening; signed agreement with architect Connor and O’Connor. May 26, 1930 Memorandum of agreement signed between Village and library to permit the library to erect and maintain a library on Village land. August 6, 1930
Awarded General Contract for construction of library building to Arvid H. Viren for $51,630. October 4, 1930 Ground breaking and laying of cornerstone. November 13, 1930 Resolution passed to construct a joint heating plant with the Township for heating both the Town Hall and the Library. April 4, 1931 Dedication and opening of the library. Those present included Mr. Connor, Architect of the building and Edgar Cameron, a Chicago artist who painted the mural of Marquette and Joliet. Robert Somer- ville, first Library Board President, presented the Cameron Mural and decorative map of the region as a personal gift to the Library. Over 1800 people registered for library cards the first week the library was opened. April 22, 1931 Organizational meeting for Friends of the Library. Mrs. Joseph Jaros was elected President. December 22, 1931 Cut annual operating budget from $8,990 to $6,500 due to low rate of tax collection during the depression. September 30, 1936 Board voted to replace library doors with solid oak entrance doors. February 24, 1937 Riverside Historical Society materials housed in the Library. February 1, 1940 Village moved out of basement room of the library. Basement remodeled into a children’s room. May 1, 1966 Riverside Public Library becomes one of the first libraries to join the new Suburban Library System (SLS). April 1975 Riverside Public Library was recipient of the “All-Star Library Award” from the Illinois Library Association. Referendum passed to increase library tax rate from 19 mils to 40 mils. November 1984 Referendum by voters to fund a $1,500,000 addition to the library passed 5,196 to 4,470. Architect : Frye Gillian Molinaro; Contractor: A.C.M. Associates; Size:12,500 sq. ft. addition to the 5,761 sq. ft. building. April 14, 1985 Groundbreaking for new addition. September 7, 1986 Grand re-opening of the library with new addition. October 1989 and January 1990 Flamingo Film Company spent four days filming an Encyclopedia Britannica Film in the Library. December 1991 Riverside Public Library pictured on the cover of American Libraries magazine. April 1997 Riverside Public Library building is used for the taping of the Oprah Winfrey Show book discussion of Stones from the River by Ursula Hegi. October 1997 The Riverside Public Library joined the World Wide Web: www.sls. lib.il.us/rss/ June 1998 Library awarded grant of $33,306 from the Illinois State Library to renovate Terrace into the Quiet Read ing Room. Construction began March 1999.

June 2007 Library receives a $12,000 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation to complete the replace- ment of lighting in the Library. July 2008 Bats at the Library, a children’s book by Brian Lies, is published by Houghton-Mifflin Corporation. The “Library” used in the book is the Riverside Public Library. October 10, 2008 Author Brian Lies comes to Riverside to read from and autograph his book, Bats at the Library. The Library celebrates this event with “Batoberfest”, an evening of fun for the entire community. Bat images lit the Library Building and the Village’s Water Tower to publicize the event. May 2010 The Library is involved in the Language of Conservation and is the recipient installations of poetry and other related materials throughout the building. “The Language of Conservation”, is an initia- tive of the Poets House in partnership with the Chicago Zoological Society, Riverside Public Library and Brookfield Public Library, as well as a consortium of zoos and libraries nationwide. It is made possible by a National Leadership grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and will continue for three years. April 5, 1999 The front of the Library was filmed for use in an episode of “Early Edition”. November 7, 1999 Dedication of the Quiet Reading Room. Young Adult Area opened on lower level. August 2002 Young Adult Area opened on lower level. April 2004 Lighting fixtures, made to look like those which originally hung in the Library, were installed in the Great Room. The fixtures were purchased with money received from the estate of Grace A. Board, a for- mer staff member and friend of the Library. April 24, 2005 The Library’s 75th Jubilee Year begins with a Commencement Celebration. A whole year of programs, events and celebrations took place in recognition of the Riverside Public Library’s 75th Anniversary. All costs incurred and associated with the Anniversary year were funded by the River side Friends of the Li brary. June 2005 Library receives grant of $ 27.000 from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation to replace lower level light- ing. April 30, 2006 The Riverside Friends of the Library mark their 75th Anniversary. Their many years of support to the Library is celebrated. June 2006 The Library receives a $17,000 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation to replace the lighting in the Adult Non-Fiction area. September 2006 Landscaping project completed. Funded by the Riverside Garden Club, the Frederick Law Olmsted Society and the Riverside Friends of the Library.

It has nourished two generations with quality programs by sharing the simple belief that art has value and can enrich anyone’s life. We proudly celebrate our 20th Anniversary on May 18th with Prom-O-Rama! It will be a festive way to kick off our next decade of the RAC and will truly be a night to remember!” Since 1993, the Riverside Arts Center (RAC) has been providing Riverside , its surrounding suburbs and the city of Chicago with exhibitions, arts classes, and special events. The RAC is located in the heart of Historic Riverside. It includes the Freeark Contemporary Art Gallery and a variety of studio space, including a renowned clay studio that has a full range of electric, raku and stoneware kilns. RAC offers more than thirty art classes each term (Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall) for children and adults in mediums ranging from clay, to oil painting, to fused glass jewelry, to printmaking. The RAC also offers provide tours, field trips, and curriculabased workshops for public and private schools and professional development opportunities for teachers. The Spectacles will be twenty minutes long. They will take place in Guthrie Park, using the SONIC BOOM “contraption” pictured below. Poetry written by Central School students will play through speakers, and the fourth graders will perform and interact with the audience in the park. This is an immersion experience for the entire community. We hope all of you will make a point of seeing at least one Spectacle!

Riverside Arts Weekend (RAW) celebrates both visual and performing arts with a multi-media juried fine arts fair and full musical performance schedule centered in Riverside’s Guthrie Park. Glamour takes center stage on Sunday, May 19 at 2:00 p.m. as RAW presents Revelry, a runway show featuring emerging designers from Dominican University. Revelry highlights fashion as a form of art with the cutting edge work of nine (9) alumnae of Dominican University’s Apparel Design program. The designers will present collections true to their respective artistic visions and highly unique from one another.
Revelry opens with the work of established designer Caroline Borucki (caro___) who has retail presence in New Buffalo, Michigan. It then segues to the work of emerging designers Alexandra Howard (Elmwood Park), Izzy Heras (Romeoville), Amanda Lindley (Tinley Park), Samantha Petkofski (Niles), Iris Carney (Berwyn), Molly Morettes (Park Ridge), Hannah Gerhardt (Omaha, NE) and Erin Von Kannon (Monmouth). Many of the designers will also exhibit portfolios and samples of their work at a Dominican University collective booth throughout Riverside Arts Weekend.

The mother and son team make up Higgins Glass Studio, 33 E. Quincy, entrusted to the Wimmers to carry on the art crafted by their long time mentors, Fran and Michael Higgins, who began the company in 1948. Louise and Jonathan agree that it was Fran’s ideas and Michael’s energy and ingenuity that led these two huge talents to start their work out if their Chicago apartment in 1948. Over the years their art sold in such major retailers as Marshall Field’s, Georg Jensen and Bullocks Wilshire, the very high end store in the California based department store chain. In 1966, the Higgins decided to return to private studio work and set up their offices in Riverside. The website notes that “here they were free to set their own goals, meet their own standards and design in the direction their hearts and minds led them.” There’s a lot of history in Higgins, and the Wimmers are proud of their work and the company.
