The event will begin at 8 a.m. Aug. 3 in Pines Park, 4N500 Church Road in Bensenville. The 5K will wind through the streets of the White Pines Subdivision in unincorporat-

ed Addison Township. The fee is $20 before the race day and $25 on the day of the race. The race is limited to 400 participants and goody bags. The event theme will honor veterans and raise awareness for the Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies program. This program helps injured, ill or wounded veterans with the transition to civilian life through health and fitness training, as well as networking opportunities.

“We couldn’t think of a better [cause] than getting these servants the assistance they so desperately need,” race director Lauri Page said. During the event, John Kurtz, head coach for Fenton High School’s boys track and field and cross country, will be recognized for more than 40 years of coaching. Kurtz has coached several all-state athletes and won conference championships. The event also will provide

ELMHURST – An elderly Elmhurst couple reported missing Saturday have been found, according to Elmhurst Police. Vernon Schweisthal, 89, and Elaine Schweisthal, 85, both of Elmhurst, were reported missing by family after they failed to appear for a lunch appointment Friday in Mount Prospect. They were found Sunday morning in Bureau County, Illinois, police said, after a passing driver saw the couple’s car pulled off the main road and onto a side road leading into a high corn field. The driver reported the car to the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office, according to police, and a deputy discovered the car was wanted by Elmhurst Police in

HOFFMAN ESTATES – An annual golf outing will benefit an Addison Trail senior who graduated from Addison School District 4 and is pursuing a college education. This year’s recipient to the scholarship is Ingrid Gonzalez. “She demonstrated the best out of all the applicants a clear goal to what she wanted to do with her life,” said Brooke Marshall, Memorial Scholarship Fund founder and son of the late Brooke Ryan Marshall. “She had a game plan to overcome the hurdles and obstacles along the way.” The Brooke Marshal Memorial Scholarship Fund will hold its annual golf outing Aug. 17

at the Bridges of Poplar Creek County Club in Hoffman Estates. Participants will enjoy a silent auction, raffle, drinks and dinner. Proceeds will go to the scholarship fund. The scholarship was founded in the memory of Brooke Marshall, a first-grade teacher at Army Trail Elementary in Addison who believed that everyone who wanted a college education should get one. In 2009, Brooke Marshall died from brain cancer, and the Marshall family started the scholarship with the help of the Addison School District 4 Foundation for Educational Excellence. Addison Trail students volunteer at food pantry By LAUREN HILL lhill@shawmedia.com ADDISON – Eight Addison Trail students volunteered at the Northern Illinois Food Pantry on June 16. Student members of the Addison Trail INTERACT Club helped package whole-wheat pasta for the food pantry. Addison Trail Community Liaison Marco Gasca and District 88 Superintendent Dr. Scott Helton also were present to volunteer and show their support. “[The students] learn to give back to the community and become a well-rounded

human beings,” Helton said of the efforts. The INTERACT Club works with the Addison Rotary Club to volunteer in the community, according to the Addison Trail website. The club also volunteers at PADS Homeless Shelter, doing Salt Creek cleanup, the Rotary Club orange sales and at Ronald McDonald House. The club also hopes to organize a leadership retreat with all of the INTERACT Clubs in the area this year. “It’s about being with other kids with a focus on community service,” Helton said.

ELMHURST – More than 60 artists will exhibit work in the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild (EAG) Summer Member Show. The EAG gallery at the Elmhurst Art Museum will include landscapes, portraits and abstract works, most of which are for sale. A portion of the proceeds benefit EAG and the Elmhurst Art Museum. lence in Writing, an Honorable Mention in Writing and two Golden Achievement awards. A story written about Addison Trail special education teacher Vicki Ream and Tim Homan, a special education aide, about their work with BOOM entertainment and B96 won the Award of Excellence

in Writing. The teachers wanted to make Addison Trail student Hailey Calhoun’s dream of seeing Justin Bieber perform come true. The story is titled, “Addison Trail student shares her experience of seeing Justin Bieber perform.” Another story that received Honorable Mention in Writing was about Willowbrook alum-

nus Kirk Mango. Mango won the still rings state title in boys gymnastics in 1975 and has become a coach, teacher, motivational speaker and author. The story is titled, “Words from a ‘true champion’: Willowbrook alumnus shares his experiences in his new book.” District 88 received a Golden Achievement award for its

service project called Feed My Starving Children Senior Service Project. The Addison Trail and Willowbrook classes of 2013 raised $22,000 to pack meals for Feed My Starving Children. More than 400 people volunteered, and more than 108,000 meals were packed for the organization May 18.

ADDISON – An Addison Trail High School auto teacher presented at the North American Council of Automotive Teachers (NACAT) Conference July 22 to 26 in Quebec, Canada. Keith Santini shared his knowledge on automobiles at the conference. The focus of the speech was how to rebuild three models of continuously variable transmissions. Santini has had 20 years of experience in the auto industry. “I enjoy the diagnostic challenge that comes with working on cars,” Santini said. “I also love teaching students about the automotive industry.” The NACAT Conference is for teachers and trainers of automotive technology. I attended the craft fair this past weekend and, yes, I did bring my stroller to tote my toddler around in. My stroller is necessary to keep my son comfortable and safe. It doesn’t take up any more room than an extra person would or a wheelchair. My suggestion is if you are bothered by the congestion that festivals and fairs bring, stay away from events and areas where small children might be, or just stay home.

I’m calling about comments about paver bricks and how stormwater can pass through them. If that’s true, I called the (village of Downers Grove), when I got my bill for the amount of ground your patio and driveway cover that they came up with that new tax on, and they claim water won’t pass through those, or even a gravel driveway. They consider gravel driveway the same as an asphalt driveway. Or, if you have a wooden deck with spaces between the boards for water to go through, they still count that as if water won’t go through it. Somebody doesn’t have all their figures and facts straight, especially at the village.

We as taxpayers are getting hit from every angle: federal, state and county. District 87 needs to live within their present means and allow the tax rate to decrease. Because of the whole pension problem, everyone looking for more tax dollars needs to stand down. We already are drowning in debt, we do not need any more. No referendum.

Not a person Mary Beth Versaci’s article titled “Zoning Board supports controversial gas station” is a textbook example of why we need a Constitutional amendment that ends corporate personhood. In the article, Trustee Ketter acknowledges that the living breathing voting community is against this proposal out of concern over numerous health and environmental issues. But under the current Supreme Court interpretation of corporate personhood, Buchanan Energy could seek protection of the Fifth Amendment. This amendment states that private property cannot be taken for public use without due process of law or just compensation. I, and most likely Buchanan Energy, am under the assumption that the DuPage County Zoning Board doesn’t have the money or legal expertise to challenge Buchanan Energy over this zoning application. Human citizens need to take action and show your support for amending the Constitution to end “corporate personhood.”

8LETTERS Prevent senior citizen fraud and abuse To the editor: One of the most common issues that face senior citizens throughout the state is elder abuse and senior fraud. An article in the Franklin Park Herald from May 15, 2013, “Families need to find reputable caregivers, protect patient from fraud,” discusses news of a caregiver accused of stealing $255,000 from the man she was supposed to be looking after. Families often times hire caregivers from unknown providers, who then develop close relationships with seniors they care for. Predators can easily gain confidential and private information that leaves our seniors vulnerable to financial exploitation and abuse. Unfortunately, this type

of fraud is becoming more and more pervasive each day. As more of us use the Internet as a resource to connect with home care providers, it is critical that everyone is aware of the background check policies conducted by the websites we visit. We can never be too careful when it comes to looking after our children and seniors. This is why last session I cosponsored House Bill 2934, which requires child care, senior care and home care websites to explicitly state whether they conduct criminal background checks on prospective providers. My hope is that this measure will expose those caregivers with a criminal history and provide consumers across Illinois confidence in the services they purchase. This legisla-

tion received strong bipartisan support in the General Assembly and now awaits the governor’s signature to become law. We must work together to stand up against elder abuse and senior fraud. I want to encourage everyone who knows a senior to stay involved in their lives, even while they are under the watch of a caregiver. Regularly engage seniors in conversation and ask them if they notice any unusual activity. There is no simple solution to protecting our loved ones on the Internet, but I believe this legislation is a strong step in the right direction. ADDISON – An Addison Police Department employee was named Addison’s July Employee of the Month on July 15. Joanne Sampson of Schaumburg has worked for the police department for almost 10 years. She works as a community service officer (CSO), a part time evidence custodian, as well as maintains the police department’s website. She joined the department in 2004 working part time transcribing police reports. “She is the most conscientious and energetic employee I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with,” Deputy Chief Mike Simo said. “We are very proud of her. She deserves it.” As a CSO, Sampson works with the red light photo enforcement department, where she interacts with the public. Sampson says that is her fa-

vorite part of her job. “Most people don’t know what they did wrong,” she said. “I like Joanne helping people.” Sampson Before joining the Addison Police Department, Sampson attended McCormick Junior College and worked as a court reporter, then a secretary. The award is presented to an employee of Addison every month. A representative from each department of Addison meets monthly to review the applications submitted, Director of Community Relations Don Weiss said. Applicants are nominated by their peers and the committee of representatives votes on which employee they want to bestow the award on that month. At the end of the year, the 12 winners are up for the Employee of the Year award.

Teen theater presents ‘Shrek the Musical’ By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Five years ago, summer meant the end of not only school, but also children’s theater in Elmhurst. At 14 years old, Helen Knudsen wanted to spend her summer on stage. So, she created DIY Teen Theatre. “The first year, it was very, very small,” she said. Knudsen remembered having to beg kids she knew from other theater productions to play parts in her debut show, even after casting the dozen kids who auditioned. This year, the York High School graduate cast 53 actors who will be entering fourth grade through freshmen year this fall for her fifth season of directing. DIY Teen Theatre also will be the first nonprofessional company in the area, and only the second in Illinois, to perform “Shrek the Musical.” “For me, it’s pretty hard because I usually get a lot of inspiration from watching a lot of different productions of the show I’m directing,” Knudsen said. With only a few professional productions as inspiration, Knudsen said this production demanded a lot

A lot of aspects of a Broadway production aren’t easily transferred to children’s theater. The challenge allowed for a lot more collaboration than her previous

undertakings. “It’s been kind of fun seeing what the kids have to offer,” Knudsen said. Now 18 years old, Knudsen said it’s much less awkward directing kids a

few years younger than herself. From the beginning, she knew she wanted to foster a certain type of atmosphere within DIY. “We play a lot of games at the beginning of rehearsals,” she said. Knudsen said her cast feels like a family, void of cliques and eager to help each other. She’s excited to see her group work so well together. Many of the older cast members from past shows have taken production roles after freshman year. Together, the teens manage nearly the entire show, from planning a budget and obtaining a production license, to creating costumes and teaching dance. Abi Arnold, 19, also conducts an 11-piece orchestra, which will accompany the movie-gone-musical with familiar hits like “I’m a Believer.” Knudsen plans to study vocal performance at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts this fall. She knows she wants to keep directing, but she has no concrete plans for DIY. The theater group has grown so much in size and quality since 14-yearold Helen refused to spend her summer waiting for the next production. “It’s kind of surreal sometimes,” she said.

DuPage County has seen 15 suspected heroin overdose deaths so far this month, coroner Richard Jorgensen said. If confirmed, the number would be a record for the county for a single month. With 18 confirmed heroin deaths so far this year, DuPage County is on track to surpass last year’s record-setting 38 heroin deaths. “We’ve been having this problem for a long time, but last month was a marked increase in suspected drug deaths,” Jorgensen said. “We’re way outside anything we’ve seen in the past.” The 15 deaths from July are awaiting toxicology reports. DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin called the recent upswing in heroin use a “public health crisis.” He said that heroin today isn’t the same as the drug found a few decades ago, and the demographics for those who use it have changed, as well. “What we’re dealing with is a drug that is more powerful than anything we’ve dealt with before,” Berlin said. “Heroin today is 10 times stronger than what it was in ’60s or ’70s. And the fact that people can snort it or smoke it instead of inject it makes it more attractive to young adults.” Users of heroin in the county increasingly fall between the ages of 16 and 24, said Kathleen Burke, CEO of the Robert Crown Center. “The perception is that heroin is a drug from the old days that nobody messed with,” she said. “But with the low cost, rising access and the rising use of pain pills as a gateway has made it more prominent.” Those who have died so far have come from a range of backgrounds and areas, Jorgensen said, although Burke said the recent deaths include more youth than ever before. Rates of middle and high schoolers using heroin have increased, she said. That rise,

she believes, also is caused by social pressure. Pressure, she said, that some choose to alleviate with $10 bags of heroin. “The research we did initially indicated there were some potentially underlying mental health issues that kids are not being diagnosed with,” she said. “It’s not necessarily people experimenting with other drugs. Instead, it’s people who are trying to normalize, feel like they think everybody else feels.” Tom Stamas, vice president and clinical director of substance abuse treatment center Serenity House, said now, half of his clients are addicted to heroin. That number drastically has increased from an estimated 15 percent a decade ago. “In the past, you’d say there were more risk factors, but we’ve seen so many children coming from well-adjusted families that I don’t know if that’s the case anymore,” Stamas said. “We have seen many individuals who come from good families who don’t have mental health issues, and yet they’re coming to us.” Stamas said addiction is more complicated than personal weakness. “Just know that help is out there, and that’s why treatment centers are out there – to help people,” he said. “Today, there is a stigma of treatment where people try to keep things secret.” Burke said education is the only prevention of heroin use. The Robert Crown Center is attempting to change the dialogue with young adults about heroin use to focus on its dangers. Berlin, too, stressed the importance of supporting potential users and former addicts and saving the hard sentencing for those who distribute the drugs. “We cannot arrest and prosecute our way out of this problem. It’s too big,” he said. “You can arrest somebody for possession of heroin, we can send them to prison for a year, two years, and they’re going to get out in half the time, and they’re going to keep using.”

Glenbard High School District 87 could spend as much as $100 million over 10 years updating its facilities. The district’s updated Master Facility Plan focuses on primary infrastructure improvements, as well as classroom renovations and additions designed to help students meet Common Core standards. The plan was updated by Legat Architects of Chicago with input from the district and community. The input was collected during several months through stakeholder focus groups and a steering committee made up of board members, staff, faculty, administrators, students, parents and community members. “It was really critical that we develop a process with them to really prioritize what needed to get done,” Legat Architects President and CEO Patrick Brosnan said. The plan was reviewed and accepted by the Board of Education in December 2011. In June 2012, the district’s Finance and Facility Committee began exploring funding options for the plan. Legat Architects originally identified $179 million worth of work to be completed during the plan’s 10-year cycle. However, the district scaled that back to $100 million, determining the other $79 million to be work that would be addressed in the following 10 years, said Chris McClain, assistant superintendent for business services. Of the $100 million, $65 million will be funded by the district’s Operations and Maintenance budget, which totals about $6.5 million each year. In order to provide available funding more quickly, the Finance and Facility Committee has proposed issuing bonds to borrow $20 million that will be paid off using that budget, McClain said. Board members took the first steps to issuing these

bonds at their meeting July 15, approving resolutions that established the board’s authority to issue the bonds and a public meeting to discuss them. Neither resolution approved the actual issuance, however, but they both are part of the process the district is required to follow. “These two requirements are precursors for us actually issuing bonds and receiving proceeds from those bonds,” McClain said. The public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Robert C. Stevens Administration Center, 596 Crescent Blvd., Glen Ellyn. The remaining $35 million would come from an extension of the district’s current bond debt that is set to expire in future years. The extension will keep tax rates at their current levels, instead of allowing them to decrease. The debt extension would require voter support through a referendum measure, which could come as early as spring 2014, McClain said. In September, the district will hold community forums at each high school to discuss the plan, as well as other topics. After reviewing community feedback, the board is expected to make a decision in November whether to proceed with a referendum. Once finances are determined, specific plans and designs for facility work will be developed based on what has been budgeted. Work could begin as early as next June, McClain said.

D.O.C Wine Bar uncorks vintage bistro flavor In search of an outdoor patio to soak up summer on a recent Saturday afternoon, we ventured into D.O.C Wine Bar, attractively set off a pedestrian-only section of Yorktown Center in Lombard. Its bistro fare, expansive international and domestic wine list, and beckoning, umbrella-shaded outdoor seating flush with flowers provided the lure. The wine bar’s name, D.O.C, refers to Italy’s designation of origin for the fruit of the grape. We started our meal with a lusciously creamy tomato soup prepared in-house with chicken stock, oregano and basil. In a perfect pairing, the soup arrived with a slice of baguette toasted to a lovely stage of crisp, and covered in delectable, melted mozzarella. My dining companion particularly enjoyed the soup’s subtle spiciness. Next, we split an order of two chicken salad sliders, featuring a beautifully balanced blend of juicy chicken and grapes with crunchy celery, and served on buttery rolls for wonderful contrasts in texture. The sliders were topped with arugula for a peppery zing. My companion ordered the smoked turkey panini, again served on a delicious bread. The tasty sandwich included avocado, pancetta, fontina, seasoned tomato and field greens. A standout side dish was the sauteed spinach, with a fresh burst of flavor that really popped. The menu extends to crab cakes and pairings of cured meats and cheeses, plus salads, flatbreads and entrees such as cedar plank salmon, short rib tacos and steak. I opted for the chicken saltimbocca, served with a comfort food side of mashed potatoes and al dente asparagus. The chicken medallions are wrapped in prosciutto and served with a touch of melted mozzarella. We overestimated our appetites, and had generous leftovers for the next day. For another visit, we’ll plan to leave

Playing international tournaments teaches Addison resident valuable lessons By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com ADDISON – Dana Gattone will have some good stories to tell when she explains what she did on her summer vacation. The Addison resident and St. Viator senior played in elite junior girls golf tournaments in July to help improve her game. Earlier this week, she competed in the U.S. Girls Junior Championship at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind., one of the biggest junior girls tournaments in the world. Gattone qualified for the tournament via a qualifier earlier in the summer at Elgin Country Club. Once there, she made the cut to advance to the final 64 golfers, where she was knocked out in the first round of match play. “My favorite part about it is competing against different girls,” Gattone said, noting that she has played against girls from Trinidad and Tobago, Guam and the Philippines this summer. A week ago she traveled to famed Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego for the Callaway Junior World Championships. In one of her rounds she played with a girl from Japan who didn’t speak English, but her game did all the talking. “The way she played different shots helped me learn a lot,” Gattone said. The elite competition has helped Gattone, who is a threetime state qualifier for Viator, improve her game this summer and get more exposure. She said hundreds of college coaches have attended the recent tournaments and she’s

I want to be a player that can make the shots to give me those pars.” Gattone, who calls Medinah Country Club her home course, competed in gymnastics and golf while growing up. She picked golf around sixth grade. “Once I started tournaments I decided I wanted to stick with golf,” she said. “I always say my favorite part

about the game is the results are a direct reflection upon your work. There’s no judges.” While she admitted it will be an adjustment to head back to high school golf after the tournaments she’s played in this summer, she is looking forward to being one of three senior captains on the Lions. “I know that will be really fun,” Gattone said. “Teach those freshmen some lessons.”

The green slopes heavily from back to front making it a premium to keep the approach shot below the hole.

DOWNERS GROVE – Football season is already here. The Chicago Bears are still weeks away from kickoff, but local fans don’t have to go far to get their football fix. The Chicago Thunder, a semi-pro team in the MidStates Football League, has set up shop in Downers Grove Jimmie and will play James its home games this season at Downers Grove South High School, starting with the home opener Saturday night. Thunder players pay to play, and winning a league title and playing for a national title are the ultimate goals.
