Angela Kramer reads poem after Borizov sentenced to life without parole WHEATON – In the days following the murders of her parents and brother, Angela Kramer professed her feelings of fear and sadness in the form of a poem. “I awoke to glass, pops and screams ... Oh how I wish it was just a horrible dream,” Kramer tearfully read Monday at the sentencing hearing for Johnny Borizov as she recalled the night she hid in her closet while Jacob Nodarse shot and killed members of her family. She finished writing that poem about a year later, after the deaths of her father, Jeff, mother, Lori and brother, Michael, but on Monday, Borizov would hear it for the first time before spending the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole. Judge Daniel Guerin sentenced Borizov after a jury found him guilty on three counts of murder and one count of solicitation of murder for orchestrating the deaths of the Kramer family at their Darien home in March 2010. Borizov received natural life sentences, to be served consecutively, for each of the first-degree murder counts. Guerin also sentenced Borizov to the maximum 30 years for the solicitation charge. “I never stop thinking of them and how Jeff, Lori and Michael suffered in their last minutes,” said Judith Pokorny, Jeff Kramer’s mother, at the sentencing hearing. “I wish Johnny Borizov could suffer as much and be the one being put

Defense attorney Susana Ortiz read a statement that she said she and Borizov prepared together. “I will profess my innocence until my last breath,” Ortiz read on behalf of Borizov. Attorney’s for the defense said they plan on appealing. Defense attorneys attempted to prove during the trial that Nodarse, 26, formerly of Countryside, acted alone when he committed the murders of the Kramer family due to a long history of drug and mental abuse. He has pleaded guilty but mentally ill and faces 45 years to life in prison. His sentencing date is set for Aug. 12.
Judge Daniel Guerin denied the defense’s motion for a new trial for Borizov on Monday. “You have taken your last breath of freedom’s air,” Guerin told the 31-year-old of Willow Springs before handing down his ruling. Throughout the trial, prosecutors painted Borizov as someone with severe anger issues toward the Kramer family and toward Angela Kramer, the mother of Borizov’s son. Prosecutors also referred to him as allegedly using fear tactics to force Nodarse to carry out the murders. As court adjourned, members of the Kramer family hugged, and a sense of relief was felt throughout the hallway leading to the courtroom – the same hallway where, just two months earlier, they spent four weeks waiting to learn of Borizov’s fate. HINSDALE – It’s such a tradition in Hinsdale that no one, not even the Chamber of Commerce, knew when it originated. “It’s considered one of our community events and we’ve been running it for many, many years…I don’t know how many,” said Jan Anderson, president and CEO of the Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce. “I would really have to go digging into archives, but I don’t know how old it is.” The Hinsdale Merchant’s Sidewalk Sale took place July 12 and 13 in downtown Hinsdale with about 21 businesses participating offering some sales of 75 percent off or higher. As opposed to years past, neither organizers at the chamber nor merchants themselves could have asked
for better weather as downtown Hinsdale was flooded with foot traffic looking for the best deals. “If we conjured this up we couldn’t do a better job,” said Margaret Reavis of Hinsdale, salesperson at Bedside Manor Ltd., as she looked up at the clear blue sky. Reavis said there were people gathering on the sidewalks well before the 9 a.m. start time. One resident in attendance was Diane Oostendorp who has been coming to the sale for as long as she can remember. “If it’s been here, I’ve been here,” Oostendorp said. Oostendorp said what she enjoys most is seeing what the new shops are in town and taking advantage of the great deals merchants are offering before the holiday season. “I also look for Christmas presents as I’m an early Christmas present shopper,”
she said. Christmas? Summer seems to barely have gotten underway and the thought of Santa’s sleigh seemed foreign in the 80-degree heat. But it wasn’t just Oostendorp as businesses were also getting ready for the holiday season during the sidewalk sale. “Everything is very, very reduced, and we’re trying to get rid of things for new things coming in,” said Liz Zimmer of Hinsdale, salesperson at Jane’s Blue Iris Ltd. on Washington Street. “We’re starting to think about Christmas.” Claudia Schwitz of Clarendon Hills was helping out at Sweet William, Inc. during the sidewalk sale. She said the store has participated for the last several years, but this year’s crowd was pretty substantial. “There’s been a lot of people coming in and out and buying stuff,” Schwitz said.

Kirk Dillard, R-Hinsdale, spoke to a packed house of supporters Tuesday night at Trademark Tavern & Tap in Lombard, after his announcement Monday to run for governor of Illinois. The event concluded his two-day trip of Illinois. “I’m proven, I’m tested, I’m the one Republican that I believe can actually win the general election,” Dillard said as applause broke out. “But most importantly, I’m the best person for governor of the state of Illinois.” Before Dillard spoke, a video was presented to supporters showing unemployment statistics, foreclosure signs on homes and businesses shut down. Dillard said it was “unconscionable” to have an unemployment rate hovering around 10 percent. “Are you ready to help me make this state work again?” Dillard asked.

The last time Dillard ran for governor he lost the 2010 gubernatorial primary to Republican State Sen. Bill Brady by 193 votes. This time around, Dillard said DuPage County would be the base and he needs residents from there to help. “I not only ask for your vote, I ask for your help, your support and your prayers,” he said. tor Casini stepping down as school board president July 8. “Victor had a difficult job and he was having difficulty with the time commitment,” said Claudia Manley, who took over as board president following Casini’s resignation. Casini will still remain on as a member of the Board of Education. While Manley has not served as a board president before, she has served on Darien School District 61. Just five days after her term ended there, she was sworn in at District 86 in April. Some of her goals now include improving collaboration among board members and moving toward an active committee structure. “Going from 61 to 86, it’s a larger district, a bigger budget and in my opinion you have to run it that way,”
she said in regard to forming committee structures. Manley said her kids have been through Claudia both school Manley systems at each district, so familiarity with the schools helps her as well. Newly elected Vice President Ed Corcoran said he believes Manley has “great” qualifications for being board president. “She also got the most votes, so there’s something to be said listening to the voters and taxpayers and who they empower to run the board,” Corcoran said. Corcoran said there were some “fireworks” about him being elected as vice president from the previous board members, but said he respected their seniority, including that of Richard

Skoda, who has been on the board the longest. “I discussed with Rick before the meeting, and he said that he would prefer not to be the vice president because he said it didn’t suit his personal life at this time,” Corcoran said. Corcoran said he was not surprised by Casini’s resignation because of the different obligations board members will face in their careers and believes Casini had to put his career and livelihood first. “I support his thinking because we would like all
the board members to be successful in their personal lives as well,” he said. With Casini’s resignation, Manley and Corcoran said their goals have not changed from the time they first sought spots on the board, including activating the committee structure, improving the budget and bettering transparency for the community. But that will take the effort of everyone on the board. “I’m not above them, I’m not below them, I’m just equal to and elected just like the other six,” Manley said.

Village Board votes against proposed assault weapons ban By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com CLARENDON HILLS – Gun enthusiasts packed the Clarendon Hills Village Hall on Monday as several residents voiced their disdain over the board considering a ban on assault weapons in the village. “I am a hunter and I demand that right [to own guns] under the Constitution,” said Floyd Bellman of Clarendon Hills. “I want my right to defend my property and my family, and you cannot take that away from me.” Bellman, along with several other pro-gun residents, got their wish as the board voted 4-2 against the ordinance that would put
the ban into effect. “I have spent precious little time thinking about guns in my life,” said Trustee Paul Pedersen. “I don’t think about guns at all, but while receiving the emails that came to me I realized there are reasons to possess guns that I never thought of.” Pedersen, along with Village President Tom Karaba, voted for the ordinance, while trustees Eric Stach, Paul Flood, Edward Reid and Don Knoll voted against it. Trustee Steve Wallace was not present at the meeting to vote. The ordinance would have required at least five yes votes to pass. A concealed gun law was recently approved in
Illinois, and a provision of the new law prevents local governments from adopting local regulations on assault weapons except for within 10 days of the law’s passing, which is July 19. If the ordinance had been approved, the ban itself would not have begun until July 1, 2014. Residents like Kirk Purcell were upset over the term “assault” riffle. He said several people associate that term with machine guns, but the rifle he uses, a .22 Caliber Marlin Model 60, would be classified as an assault rifle. “I find it offensive that this would be classified as an assault weapon,” Purcell said. Clarendon Hills Police
Chief Ted Jenkins said Monday that a ban on assault riffles would not have an effect on safety in Clarendon Hills as an assault riffle problem does not exist. Resident Phil Dalen agreed and said most murders aren’t committed with assault riffles, but rather from blunt objects such as hammers and clubs. “When was the last time we had a murder in the village with an assault riffle?” Dalen asked the board. No one in attendance spoke in favor of the ordinance passing. “Tonight is why we’re all proud to be American,” Karaba said. “We can leave as friends and better than when we came in here.”
Dillard, lawmakers override Right-toCarry legislation SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA HINSDALE – Facing a July 9 Supreme Court deadline for Illinois to adopt concealed carry legislation, lawmakers returned to Springfield on July 9 and overwhelmingly rejected Gov. Pat Quinn’s recent changes to Rightto-Carry legislation passed by Illinois lawmakers in late May. Illinois now joins the other 49 states in the nation in allowing citizens to carry concealed firearms. Lawmakers met extensively in the spring legislative session in negotiations on a concealed carry measure, but Gov. Quinn did not participate in that process, according to a news release from State Sen. Kirk Dillard. “The governor could have offered his input during the spring session; the General Assembly would have welcomed his involvement. However, I question his motivation behind waiting until after the legislation had been negotiated and approved to finally weigh in,” Dillard said.

HINSDALE – The Hinsdale Police Department has identified the 70-year-old Hinsdale man who was pronounced dead Sunday at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital after a car crash in the 600 block of South Garfield Street. Dubravko J. Zacharia was the driver and lone occupant of the 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer, which was traveling south on Garfield when it left the road-
OAK BROOK – The Oak Brook Police Department has made an arrest involving several commercial burglaries along 22nd Street in Oak Brook. Gerald Carey, 46, of 9954 South Wentworth Ave., Chicago, has been charged with one count of burglary. According to police, Carey would enter office suites and remove cell phones, iPads, laptops, wallets or purses. Through the course of the investigation, it was discovered Carey was involved in several similar burglaries in surrounding police jurisdictions,

Business meets pleasure Nazareth graduates create online coupon service for Chicago nightlife spots By ALEX RUPPENTHAL aruppenthal@shawmedia.com Waking up to wallets stuffed with collections of bar and club receipts helped Mike Tatarowicz and James Wachowski realize that going out was getting too expensive. So, they decided to make it cheaper. Seizing the entrepreneurial spirit, the former Nazareth Academy buddies started Audum Live, a website that sells coupons to Chicago nightlife spots for as low as $3 in January 2012. The service differs from other online coupon sites like Groupon, which validates deals when a certain number of people have bought them. Instead, Audum Live customers can buy and use coupons at any time. A typical offer on the site is $5 or $7 for 30 percent off your tab at a certain bar, which can be applied to an entire table. Tatarowicz, of Hinsdale, and Wachowski get the cost of the coupon, and the businesses don’t pay anything. Also unlike Groupon or DailyDeals.com, which sell coupons for everything from manicures to pet supplies, Audum Live limits itself to nightlife, selling coupons for bars, clubs, concerts and the like. “These are the types of things we would do just as two guys hanging out,” said Tatarowicz, who, like his business partner, is a 2003 Nazareth graduate. “We came to the conclusion that we spent far too much money doing it.” By offering coupons that are usually less than $10, the site gives people a way to have fun on a budget. “What we set out to do is provide young professionals with a cost-conscious outlet to find things going on in their area,” Tatarowicz said. “[Finances are] typically the biggest barrier for people of our age whether it’s going out or going on vacation.”

The site has reached 50,000 different customers since it launched in January 2012. In between their social lives – which are now also their professional ones – the young entrepreneurs spend plenty of time on the phone and computer. “It’s taken forever to get to this point,” said Wachowski, of Lyons. It also required some odd hours – and not just late ones spent feeling out nightlife spots. “There was a stretch for six months where I was waking up at 2 or 3 a.m., working with our programmers in India … log out with them, shower, go to work with Jimmy, test the stuff [the programmers] did,” said Tatarowicz. It’s starting to pay off. Eighteen months in, the site has drawn 50,000 different customers and won its first big partner, Four Corners Tavern Group. Tatarowicz and Wachowski are making some money, though it took $250,000 in private investments to start the site.

“As long as we’re getting by, that’s fine,” Tatarowicz said. “We can get money later. Right now, we just want to drive this company as big as it can be.” They’re hoping to expand the site to New York, San Francisco and Denver, where the site’s designer lives. And they think their model – single-digit offers for young professionals without a ton of discretionary income, plus a free service to businesses – will catch on. “There really isn’t any-
thing like it,” Tatarowicz said. A recent study of their social media operation found that more than 100,000 people have interacted with the Audum Live brand. Tatarowicz estimates he goes out three to four nights a week, not only to bars and clubs but also to concerts and restaurants. “We are currently not together in the office because we were out last night,” he said. Work is work.

Friends for Downers Grove Township Senior Citizens lends a hand Along with longer lives, we are witnessing important changes for senior citizens in areas such as health, living arrangements and family relationships. As more of us retire, we replace our job responsibilities with leisure time activities such as travel, education, volunteer service and more. At the same time, there COMMUNITY exists a need for community VOICE services to provide information and/or assistance to Frank older persons in areas such Wurster as healthcare, transportation, housing, counseling, day care, companionship, recreation and financing. Fortunately, there are programs and services offered in our community for older residents. In an effort to best assist our senior residents, a new 501(c)(3) foundation has been formed by Downers Grove Township to support the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee. The foundation will seek to enhance the quality of life of older adults by acting as a resource for funding programs and services for older adults. This new foundation operates as a nonprofit group seeking monetary donations, contributions and grants to support programs and services for older adults. The Senior Citizens Advisory Committee of Downers Grove Township aims to foster the independence and wellbeing of older adults in our community. The committee successfully has developed several programs that assist senior citizens. These include a Dial-A-Ride transportation program, the Banner News newsletter, the Vintage Times cable television program, articles posted on the township’s website, safety and crime-prevention programs that include the popular “File of Life” medical information card and community “networking.” People who are interested in serving on a committee being formed are encouraged to send a resume to Frank Wurster, Supervisor, Downers Grove Township, 4340 Prince St., Downers Grove, IL 60515; frank.wurster@dgtownship.com. 8SOUND OFF In favor of pavers As a Downers Grove taxpayer, I offer a sincere and hearty thank you to [District 99] for installing the permeable pavers in the North High School parking lot. Considering what we know and teach about water quality, this decision shows that the district is serious about its role as educator, not only of its students, but also of the community. The pavers allow rainwater to flow through them and into the ground, where it is cleaned naturally and returned to our local river or stream. With asphalt lots, the water flows across the surface, picking up dirt and toxins and carrying them to the storm drains, which lead straight to our local rivers or streams.
Time for spirit rock to go It’s time to retire the Glenbard North High School spirit rock. For years the rock has been a fun way for the high school’s
organizations and teams to express themselves. But over the past year, the spray paint/graffiti has expanded to areas beyond the rock and it’s just a matter of time until the graffiti spreads to other areas of the high school campus. What a shame.
Come to a full stop I live in downtown La Grange, and I would like to talk about the confusion between stop signs and yield signs. A stop sign is when your car comes to zero miles per hour. A yield sign is when you slow down, look both ways and then go through the intersection. In downtown La Grange, the stop signs are treated as yield signs, and I will say even the La Grange police do not come to a complete stop at the stop sign. We have a lot of pedestrians around here, we even have an elementary school [nearby] and this concept of the rolling stop at a stop sign has got to stop.

o matter how flu season shapes up this year, one thing’s for certain: Not everyone older than 50 is going to get vaccinated. Despite universal recommendations urging every person 6 months and older to get vaccinated, many Americans don’t get the flu shot, said Dr. William Schaffner, chairman of the Department of Preventative Medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. “Absolutely, unhesitatingly, no doubt. You should get your flu shot. And especially older people,” said Schaffner. “People 50 and older are the age group that will experience the most complications from influenza and they will be more serious complications, such as getting pneumonia or ending up in the hospital hooked up to a ventilator. Dr. Lisa Grohskopf, medical officer with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said “For more mature people, getting the flu shot is really important because as we age the immune system doesn’t respond as well as it did when we were younger.” But just how good is the flu virus? Last flu season, the vaccine was 56 percent effective when it came to curbing flu-related medical visits, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For people 65 and older, that number dropped to 9 percent effectiveness for the season’s most prevalent flu strain. Those statistics are eye-opening, but they should not stop you from getting vaccinated. “It’s not a perfect vaccine like the measles or polio vaccine is perfect. But it’s the best we have right now,” Schaffner said. “I like to use the quote from Voltaire: ‘The perfect is the enemy of the good,’

meaning that waiting for a perfect vaccine in the future is a sure way to catch the flu this season. While some people believe that the flu is just a bad cold, it’s really a “devilish virus,” Schaffner said. “It can take a healthy person and in just 48 hours put that person in intensive care,” he said. Older people are more at risk than the general population. People who are more likely to experience serious complications from the flu are “older, have an illness such as diabetes, are overweight, have underlying heart or lung disease or” whose immune systems are compromised, Schaffner said. “This is the one (illness) that year in, year out sends more than 200,000 to the hospital and causes over 30,000 excess deaths,” Schaffner added. The experts have answers ready for the doubters who say, “I got the flu shot, and then I still got the flu!” You may have caught the flu, but it made the illness milder, Schaffner said. “If you went to the doctor, you avoided going to the hospital,” he added. Older adults do a better job of getting their flu shots, with about 66 percent of people 65 and older vaccinated each year, Schaffner said. “One way to look at it is, that’s a huge achievement, but on the other hand, one-third of folks were not vaccinated,” he said. While the big push to get a flu shot begins in September when the vaccine becomes available, don’t hesitate to get vaccinated later in the season. “The peak month for the flu is February,” Schaffner said. A flu shot is “so easy to get,” especially at walk-in clinics offered at many pharmacies and grocery stores. You can’t get the flu from getting a flu shot, but it can come with some side effects, Grohskopf said, such as soreness, redness or itching at the site, or a mild fever or cold, which is preferable to the flu.

hy not slow things down and enjoy the experience of travel by taking a train trip for your next vacation? “There are many appealing aspects of train travel,” said Regis St. Louis, Lonely Planet travel writer and coordinating author of the 2012 “USA” guide. “For one, it forces you to slow down and enjoy the scenery. You’ll have more of a connection to the lands you’re passing across — rather than just soaring over at 35,000 feet oblivious of the lavender fields, river valleys and other great scenery you might be missing.” The benefits For some trips, flying can’t be avoided, but traveling by train opens up a world of possibilities with abundant benefits. Trains: ◆ Drop you right in the middle of the city where all the action is rather than at an airport in the middle of nowhere. ◆ Hit big cities and picturesque small towns. ◆ Allow you to take more luggage for free. ◆ Allow you to stretch out and move freely with seating that may be reserved or open, more comfortable and possibly with facing seats. ◆ Have sleeper cars where you can rest and wake up in another state or country. You can also save money on a hotel room by taking an overnight train to your destination. ◆ Offer more selection of departure/arrival times. ◆ Have no security checkpoints. ◆ May be less costly (unless you splurge) and are more environmentally-friendly. “There’s also the camaraderie,” St. Louis said, “It’s easier to meet other travelers on a train. I think there’s something about this old-fashioned mode of travel that makes people more open to the delights of travel and sharing stories with others around them. … You’re also likely to meet like-minded travelers and that’s one of the great parts of travel — learning about other cultures and ways of life.” Traveling by train beats driving, too. You’ll avoid busy roads and the stress of traveling on the highways. “You can sit back enjoy the scenery, curl up with a good book or even do a bit of writing — letters, journals, stories — train travel seems conducive to the literary mind,” St. Louis said. Train travel fits your budget, whether that means senior discounts on Amtrak,
coach seats and a bag of snacks carried along, or high-end trains with luxury accommodations and world-class chefs. Fancy a drink? Many trains boast bar and cafe cars, which are a good place to relax with fellow passengers. Some trains even have smoking cars. Where to go There’s no easy characterization of train travel. There are iconic long-haul journeys such as a trip along the Trans-Siberian railway, which stretches more than 5,500 miles from Moscow to Vladivostok, Russia, and takes seven days if you don’t stop. Other transcontinental trips traverse America, Canada and Australia. First-time train riders might prefer a shorter trip and crossing a region rather than a whole country, or picking one country such as France or Italy, which have excellent train infrastructure. On another short trip, Amtrak’s Adirondack leaves the skyscrapers of New York City behind and cruises through the Hudson River Valley past West Point, then hugs the shoreline of Lake Champlain for 50 miles before ending in Montreal 11 hours later. History fans can step back in time and take a short journey on an old-fashioned steam train in southeastern Brazil or past Victoria Falls in southern Africa. St. Regis’ favorite train trip is the scenic journey in the Douro Valley from Porto to Pocinho in Portugal, a beautiful half-day adventure into the heart of Portugal’s most spectacularly set vineyards. Here are three other recommendations from St. Regis: ◆ In Canada, Via Rail operates the Canadian which makes the three-day journey between Toronto and Vancouver. The scenery, which takes in the northern Ontario Lake Country, the western plains and the looming Canadian Rockies, is spectacular, and you’re likely to see eagles, elk, moose and even bear. ◆ The narrow-gauge Durango & Silverton train shows off Colorado’s scenic side. This vintage steam-spewing locomotive climbs from 6,500 feet at Durango to more than 9,300 feet in Silverton and takes around 3 1/2 hours to make the 45-mile journey. ◆ How about having breakfast in London, lunch in Paris and returning to England in time for evening cocktails? Hop on the Eurostar for a 180-mph trip that travels via Chunnel under the English Channel and departs every hour.

Former middle school teacher accused of raping student

BURR RIDGE – A former Burr Ridge Middle School teacher has been accused of raping a 13-year-old middle school boy in the mid-1990s, according to media reports citing a lawsuit filed July 9 in federal court. Spiro Lempesis is accused of sexually assaulting a former student when he was a teacher, as well as an athletic coach at Burr Ridge Middle School, the reports said. District 180 Superintendent Thomas Schneider said this was a case that allegedly happened 17 years ago, and very few members of the cur-
rent staff were employed at that time. “We don’t want any of the good things we’re doing now to help our students be successful to be tainted in any way by something that happened 17 years ago when nearly 90 percent of us weren’t here,” Schneider said. Lempesis was terminated by the district in 1996, according to the reports. He could not be reached for comment. Schneider said the case will now be referred to the district’s attorneys and they will advise the district on the best course of action. He said the district will cooperate in
any way and provide whatever information is available. “That employee is no longer with the district,” he said. “All of our staff have been compliant with all the certifications and we believe we have an environment where students are safe and feel safe here.” In May, a lawsuit was filed against Lempesis for sex abuse allegations that occurred while he was a baseball coach at Concordia University, according to media reports. In that case filed in Cook County Circuit Court, a student accuses Lempesis of having him do sex acts on videotape to raise his stock on the baseball team.

DARIEN – The Darien Police Department has responded to three residential burglaries in July. Two reports have been taken in the 8500 block and the 8700 block of Carriage Greens Drive. The other report was taken in the 1600 block of Darien Club Drive. The incidents range in times from late morning to early afternoon, and late evening. No residents were home for any of the incidents. Specific information about methods of entry, dates and times are being withheld due to the ongoing police investigation.

Comfort, elegance and great food at La Tosca VILLA PARK – You can look all you like, but it’s unlikely you’ll find a more authentic Italian experience than La Tosca anywhere else. As popular as Italian cuisine is, it can be tough to find a unique experience. La Tosca achieves this with ambiance, class and fine food. When you drive up to the restaurant on St. Charles Road, it immediately stands out for its exterior, with an Italian villa-style façade and terra-cotta roof. Inside, you find they’ve somehow turned a dining room with an immensely high ceiling into an intimate setting, featuring lots of dark wood trim and a few faux cracks on the wall – evocative of Italy’s famously ancient architectural heritage. As a dining companion and I settled in for a recent evening, we were presented with menus for dinner, the night’s specials and wines. A nice touch on the wine menu are the suggested pairings of wines and meals. Knowing that I would likely opt for a pasta dish, I selected a glass of Ruffino Chianti. “Pair with pasta with tomato and grilled beef,” the menu says. For an appetizer, my companion and I shared the
Mozzarella Alla Tosca, which layered prosciutto, mozzarella, roasted peppers, leafy greens and olive oil. It made for a light and savory enticement – very tasty. Neither of us was in the mood for pizza, although La Tosca has an extensive list of options. I went for the Cannelloni Alla Romana: “Homemade pasta stuffed with meat and spinach with a basciamella tomato sauce.” My companion was tempted by several items on the specials menu, but ultimately went with the Saltimbocca: “Veal medallions, sage, prosciutto, mushrooms and mozzarella cheese in a demiglazed wine sauce.” After I enjoyed a minestrone soup that came with my entree, and my companion had polished off a delectable garden salad, we were, in short order, presented with our main courses. Before even taking a bite, we knew we’d be leaving with takehome bags; the portions were attractively presented and so generous we knew we wouldn’t be able to finish everything. I will admit that I heat up a frozen dinner for lunch now and then, and store-bought cannelloni is one of my more

Compared to what’s served at La Tosca, the microwaveable meal can hardly be considered food. I found myself letting each bite linger for a moment as I experienced all the subtle shadings of flavor. And, as expected, half the entree ended up being my lunch the next day, and much better than anything I could get at the grocery store. My dining companion said the veal medallions were tender and rich in flavor, and we were surprised to see that they also
came with a side of pasta with marinara sauce. They really don’t want you going home hungry! For dessert, I went for the chocolate truffle gelato, and my companion chose the profiterole – mini cream puffs in a chocolate mousse – which our server confessed was a favorite. We ended up sharing each other’s portions, and, if pressed, I’m not sure I could choose between the two, as both were extremely rich and sweet. You might feel inclined to

Best known for being half of the country music duo Brooks & Dunn, he is the headliner for the eighth annual Rockin’ for the Troops benefit concert Saturday at Cantigny Park in Wheaton. Along with Dunn, performers include Motown tribute band The Voices, the Kimo Williams Band playing rock tributes and original music, plus rockers Arra. Advance tickets are recommended.
“I got a call from my manager, and we were able to do it,” Dunn said in a recent phone interview. “We’ve done countless things to support the troops – concerts at military bases all over the country. It would be great to not have troops in harm’s way, but at the same time, there’s always going to be an opportunity to serve and pay tribute to them.” And expressing appreciation to the troops is what the volunteer-based, nonprofit OSOT-America is all about. For 10 years, it has embraced the mission: “to support the morale and well-being of American forces by providing comfort, resources and education to them and their families, both while
they are deployed in harm’s way and after their return.” The packing and shipping of care packages to Ronnie Dunn deployed military members is one of the things the organization does. As for Dunn, supporting the troops is not the only charitable work he has undertaken lately. He was among the stars at Toby Keith’s Oklahoma twister relief concert July 6. “We were actually on the ground outside Oklahoma City when the tornado came through Moore,” Dunn said of the May tragedy, noting that because of
expected bad weather, he had opted not to fly back to Nashville from a concert in Santa Fe, N.M. He said when his bus driver learned a tornado had touched down in Moore, “he fired up the bus, and we hit the road; we drove parallel to that storm system all the way to Memphis.” That experience may find its way into a song in the future as Dunn’s music continues to evolve. In response to people who call his new music “not country enough,” Dunn said, “There’s a place for that. I embrace it all. I can come out of a good, rocking song and dive into a hard-core country song. We’re at a time in this business when we’re redefining the rules.”

Good offseason for standout Hinsdale’s Floodstrand keeps his stick on the ice this summer By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia HINSDALE – One of the most popular offseason activities for hockey players is golfing. In the midst of a busy summer of hockey-related activity, Michael Floodstrand deserved to hit the links, and that’s exactly what he did July 15. It was one of the few down days of the summer for the Hinsdale resident. Even on the down days he doesn’t have much time to relax. “There’s some downtime, but you’re still working out almost everyday,” the 16year old Fenwick student said. “I’m not skating everyday, but three days a week I’m skating. It’s all sorts of different stuff – lifting, cardio, shooting the puck in the garage.” Whatever Floodstrand has been doing is obviously working. On May 6 he was selected by the Lincoln (Neb.) Stars in the sixth round of the United States Hockey League Draft, a junior-level league. “I feel really fortunately and lucky to be drafted,” Floodstrand said. “I wouldn’t say it was expected, but I knew I had a good chance and I’d hoped I would be drafted.” Another highlight came when he participated in USA Hockey’s player development camp July 7-13. The camp brought 180 of the top players in the country

At the end of the camp, Floodstrand was one of 20 players chosen for the 2013 Under-17 Select National Team, which will compete against Germany, Switzerland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic at the Five Nations Tournament in Trnava, Slovakia Aug. 14-18. “Coming out of the development camp they picked the Select team,” Floodstrand said. “It’s awesome. Being able to represent your country is really cool.” Tory Dello and Vasili Kolias, Floodstrand’s teammates with the AAA Chicago Mission junior midget minor team that won a national title in April, will also be part of the Select team. Hinsdale Central debuts new rotation, lineup during summer season With senior pitchers Matt Marrera, Matt Reschke and Mike Rizzo leading the way, Hinsdale South’s baseball team won a West Suburban Gold title in the spring. During the course of the summer season, head coach Paul Hoel has seen indications that pitching could once again be a strength. “Our top three or four guys have done a real nice job on the mound, so we feel really comfortable on the mound again,” Hoel said. Don Buonavolanto and Joe Oehmen were regulars in the spring and figure to anchor the lineup come 2014, so the summer season has been critical for the players hoping to crack the varsity lineup next year. “I definitely think it’s just settling down and being at ease. We had a senior-loaded team in the spring, so it’s good for guys to fill a role, get a lot of at-bats and get comfortable defensively and offensively and trust their skills,” Hoel said. “That’s what it really was – a chance for kids to perform.” Development over the summer is more important to Hoel than wins and losses, and the same holds true for Bill Duffy, who ran Hinsdale Central’s summer program until the Red Devils’ season ended Monday with a 7-0 loss to Aurora Central Catholic in a summer playoff game. “The summer season is basically giving the kids coming back next spring a chance

Christian Bokich (Miami of Ohio), Adam Dressler (Purdue) and Bobby Skogsbergh (Boston College) have graduated, as have hurlers Basil Arain, Tom Concklin, Andrew Eck and Aaron Walsh. All told, the Red Devils are likely to bring back just three pitchers – Charlie Banke, Austin Butler and Nick Senicka – that saw any mound time last spring, with Butler’s 121/3 innings pitched the high-
est total. The lineup could also have a new look next spring. Chris Botsoe, Ryan Haff, Matt Muellner and Jacob White are the only players who finished in the top-10 in plate appearances eligible to return; the rest have graduated. There is little to no practice time during the summer season, but Duffy and the Red Devils made the most of the moments they did have. “I tried to tell our pitchers to attack hitters and attack the zone, and our hitters to think about the situation at the plate,” Duffy said. “And I talked to our infielders and outfielders to know where they were going with the ball. The idea in the summer is to learn from your mistakes and not have it happen to you in the spring.”

The Chicago Bears are still weeks away from kickoff, but local fans don’t have to go far to get their football fix. The Chicago Thunder, a semi-pro team in the MidStates Football League, has set up shop in Downers Grove and will play its home games this season at Downers Grove South High School, starting with the home opener Saturday night. Several players are from the western suburbs, and the Thunder are making games accessible to families in the same area, starting with $7 tickets for adults. Tickets for kids are $4 or less. “Kids with report cards, veterans and active servicemen, police officers and firemen are

All they have to do is wear their jerseys.” Fans who attend games won’t just get to see a Thunder team that has had tremendous success since its inception in 1991 (10 league titles and two national championships in 2007 and 2008), but also a group of hardworking players who are out on the field solely for the love of the game. Teams in the MSFL play according to NFL rules, which means full speed and full contact. The bumps and bruises are the same; the difference is the way the players have to deal with them. Locker rooms in the MSFL aren’t equipped with hot tubs. “I’ve got a full time job,” Darien resident and first-year
ington said. “If I get injured, I still have to go to work the next day.” Williams is part of a new crop of Thunder players. Several players are Thunder veterans, such as quarterbacks Jorge Sierra (Riverside) and Greg Holcomb (Downers Grove). Washington, defensive lineman Dave Wisbrock (Westmont) and wide receiver Bryce True (Westmont) are league veterans but are new to the Thunder. Wisbrock, in his 11th season playing semi-pro ball, last played with the Leyden Lions and said it was a no-brainer to join the Thunder, even though he’s recovering from an ACL injury. “They were our biggest rival, but they were the only team in the league I respected beside the one I was on,” Wisbrock said. “It was either retire
only other team I respected.” Baptiste Williams, a 28-year-old offensive lineman from Downers Grove, is also new to the team. “It’s been good. It’s been everything I expected,” Williams said at a practice July 11 before the Thunder’s season-opening 38-6 win over the Joliet Buccaneers on Saturday. “I’m proud that they accepted me to be a part of the team. I feel I can do a lot.” On the Thunder website, prospective team members click on a tab titled “Become a Thunder Brother.” That’s how they players talk about each other, as brothers rather than teammates. “This is not a team, this is a family,” the 38-year-old Sierra said. “It’s been that way for a long time.” That love of each other and of the game is what keeps them
going though the bumps and bruises that come along with playing an eight-game regular season. In the NFL, there are game-day paychecks, the opportunity for big endorsement deals, and the cache of being a professional player. Thunder players pay to play, and winning a league title and playing for a national title are the ultimate goals. “The love of the game. That’s why I do this every year,” Sierra said. “I’ve been playing since I was 8 and playing Pop Warner. I love the game.” Veterans like Sierra and Holcomb met in the offseason to discuss this season’s goals, and they’re hoping to take a “family vacation” to Miami for the national championship at the end of the season.

The Riverside Public Library Timeline of important dates …..
April 21, 1927 Referendum passed establishing a library and levying a tax for this purpose. April 17, 1928 First Library Board elected. June 25, 1920 Bond issue referendum to construct a building for $75,000.00 passed 120-70. February 8, 1930 By election of the people, the Library Act was amended to permit the library to be built in any park in the Village under exclusive control and supervision of library directors. April 11, 1930 Hired Grace Gilman as librarian prior to opening; signed agreement with architect Connor and O’Connor. May 26, 1930 Memorandum of agreement signed between Village and library to permit the library to erect and maintain a library on Village land. August 6, 1930
Awarded General Contract for construction of library building to Arvid H. Viren for $51,630. October 4, 1930 Ground breaking and laying of cornerstone. November 13, 1930 Resolution passed to construct a joint heating plant with the Township for heating both the Town Hall and the Library. April 4, 1931 Dedication and opening of the library. Those present included Mr. Connor, Architect of the building and Edgar Cameron, a Chicago artist who painted the mural of Marquette and Joliet. Robert Somer- ville, first Library Board President, presented the Cameron Mural and decorative map of the region as a personal gift to the Library. Over 1800 people registered for library cards the first week the library was opened. April 22, 1931 Organizational meeting for Friends of the Library. Mrs. Joseph Jaros was elected President. December 22, 1931 Cut annual operating budget from $8,990 to $6,500 due to low rate of tax collection during the depression. May 1, 1966 Riverside Public Library becomes one of the first libraries to join the new Suburban Library System (SLS). April 1975 Riverside Public Library was recipient of the “All-Star Library Award” from the Illinois Library Association. Referendum passed to increase library tax rate from 19 mils to 40 mils. November 1984 Referendum by voters to fund a $1,500,000 addition to the library passed 5,196 to 4,470. Architect : Frye Gillian Molinaro; Contractor: A.C.M. Associates; Size:12,500 sq. ft. addition to the 5,761 sq. ft. building. April 14, 1985 Groundbreaking for new addition. September 7, 1986 Grand re-opening of the library with new addition. October 1989 and January 1990 Flamingo Film Company spent four days filming an Encyclopedia Britannica Film in the Library. December 1991 Riverside Public Library pictured on the cover of American Libraries magazine. April 1997 Riverside Public Library building is used for the taping of the Oprah Winfrey Show book discussion of Stones from the River by Ursula Hegi. October 1997 The Riverside Public Library joined the World Wide Web: www.sls. lib.il.us/rss/ June 1998 Library awarded grant of $33,306 from the Illinois State Library to renovate Terrace into the Quiet Read ing Room. Construction began March 1999.

June 2007 Library receives a $12,000 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation to complete the replace- ment of lighting in the Library. July 2008 Bats at the Library, a children’s book by Brian Lies, is published by Houghton-Mifflin Corporation. The “Library” used in the book is the Riverside Public Library. October 10, 2008 Author Brian Lies comes to Riverside to read from and autograph his book, Bats at the Library. The Library celebrates this event with “Batoberfest”, an evening of fun for the entire community. Bat images lit the Library Building and the Village’s Water Tower to publicize the event. May 2010 The Library is involved in the Language of Conservation and is the recipient installations of poetry and other related materials throughout the building. “The Language of Conservation”, is an initia- tive of the Poets House in partnership with the Chicago Zoological Society, Riverside Public Library and Brookfield Public Library, as well as a consortium of zoos and libraries nationwide. It is made possible by a National Leadership grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and will continue for three years. October 2010 The Library celebrates the 80th Anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone and begins its 80th year of service to the people of Riverside. April 2011 The Library celebrates 80 years of service to the community! March 2012 The Library’s Sustainable efforts project, We R Riverside Responsible, kicks off.

April 5, 1999 The front of the Library was filmed for use in an episode of “Early Edition”. November 7, 1999 Dedication of the Quiet Reading Room. Young Adult Area opened on lower level. August 2002 Young Adult Area opened on lower level. April 2004 Lighting fixtures, made to look like those which originally hung in the Library, were installed in the Great Room. The fixtures were purchased with money received from the estate of Grace A. Board, a for- mer staff member and friend of the Library. April 24, 2005 The Library’s 75th Jubilee Year begins with a Commencement Celebration. A whole year of programs, events and celebrations took place in recognition of the Riverside Public Library’s 75th Anniversary. All costs incurred and associated with the Anniversary year were funded by the River side Friends of the Li brary. June 2005 Library receives grant of $ 27.000 from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation to replace lower level light- ing. April 30, 2006 The Riverside Friends of the Library mark their 75th Anniversary. Their many years of support to the Library is celebrated. June 2006 The Library receives a $17,000 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation to replace the lighting in the Adult Non-Fiction area. September 2006 Landscaping project completed. Funded by the Riverside Garden Club, the Frederick Law Olmsted Society and the Riverside Friends of the Library.

It will be a festive way to kick off our next decade of the RAC and will truly be a night to remember!” Since 1993, the Riverside Arts Center (RAC) has been providing Riverside , its surrounding suburbs and the city of Chicago with exhibitions, arts classes, and special events. The RAC is located in the heart of Historic Riverside. It includes the Freeark Contemporary Art Gallery and a variety of studio space, including a renowned clay studio that has a full range of electric, raku and stoneware kilns. RAC offers more than thirty art classes each term (Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall) for children and adults in mediums ranging from clay, to oil painting, to fused glass jewelry, to printmaking. The RAC also offers provide tours, field trips, and curriculabased workshops for public and private schools and professional development opportunities for teachers. The Spectacles will be twenty minutes long. They will take place in Guthrie Park, using the SONIC BOOM “contraption” pictured below. Poetry written by Central School students will play through speakers, and the fourth graders will perform and interact with the audience in the park. This is an immersion experience for the entire community. We hope all of you will make a point of seeing at least one Spectacle!

Riverside Arts Weekend (RAW) celebrates both visual and performing arts with a multi-media juried fine arts fair and full musical performance schedule centered in Riverside’s Guthrie Park. Glamour takes center stage on Sunday, May 19 at 2:00 p.m. as RAW presents Revelry, a runway show featuring emerging designers from Dominican University. Revelry highlights fashion as a form of art with the cutting edge work of nine (9) alumnae of Dominican University’s Apparel Design program. The designers will present collections true to their respective artistic visions and highly unique from one another.
Revelry opens with the work of established designer Caroline Borucki (caro___) who has retail presence in New Buffalo, Michigan. It then segues to the work of emerging designers Alexandra Howard (Elmwood Park), Izzy Heras (Romeoville), Amanda Lindley (Tinley Park), Samantha Petkofski (Niles), Iris Carney (Berwyn), Molly Morettes (Park Ridge), Hannah Gerhardt (Omaha, NE) and Erin Von Kannon (Monmouth). Many of the designers will also exhibit portfolios and samples of their work at a Dominican University collective booth throughout Riverside Arts Weekend.

The mother and son team make up Higgins Glass Studio, 33 E. Quincy, entrusted to the Wimmers to carry on the art crafted by their long time mentors, Fran and Michael Higgins, who began the company in 1948. Louise and Jonathan agree that it was Fran’s ideas and Michael’s energy and ingenuity that led these two huge talents to start their work out if their Chicago apartment in 1948. Over the years their art sold in such major retailers as Marshall Field’s, Georg Jensen and Bullocks Wilshire, the very high end store in the California based department store chain. In 1966, the Higgins decided to return to private studio work and set up their offices in Riverside. The website notes that “here they were free to set their own goals, meet their own standards and design in the direction their hearts and minds led them.” There’s a lot of history in Higgins, and the Wimmers are proud of their work and the company.
