While some members are lifelong gardeners, novice growers always are welcome. “We have people who have done very little gardening that come just to learn,” Farrell said. The garden walk aims to foster the exchange of ideas. Participants received a map of the seven gardens fea-

This year it’s titled “Botanicals.” “It just seemed like an opportunity for us to have some of our local artists showcased,” Farrell said. The stars of the show, Fredrickson said, still are the carefully selected gardens. A selection committee already is scouting gardens for next year, which may or may not belong to club members. While some landscaper gardens were chosen this year, the club always likes to highlight gardens created by residents. “I think people take a lot of pride in their gardens in Elmhurst,” Fredrickson said.

ELMHURST – Established in 1926, the Elmhurst Garden Club has grown from a ladies club to a group that supports more than just its members. “I think we do good work partly because of this garden walk we have,” Garden Walk Chairwoman Donna Fredrickson said. Since the club’s annual Garden Walk began in 1995, members have raised more than $190,000, which they have donated to scholarship funds, the Elmhurst Park District, Elmhurst Public Library and most recently to the sensory garden project at Madison Early Childhood Center, among other groups. “An emphasis of our club is on education,” Elmhurst Garden Club President Norma Farrell said. The club established the Mildred Hartney College Scholarship Fund to distribute scholarships to Illinois residents who are college juniors, seniors or graduate students studying horticulture, environmental studies, botany or related sciences. Proceeds from the garden walk benefit scholarships or community groups. This year, the club has donated about $8,000 to scholarships, but club members also educate each other. “There’s always something new to learn in gardening,” Fredrickson said. “You never know everything.” Nearly 100 club members meet every month September through April at Wilder Mansion for business meetings, but they also always

Elmhurst resident wins Miss Illinois By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – The newly crowned Miss Illinois’ late grandfather predicted her future long before the thought of entering a pageant crossed her mind. “It’s funny, because he used to actually sing the Miss America song to me when I was younger,” said 23-yearold Brittany Smith of Elmhurst. After winning Miss Illinois less than three weeks ago, the Purdue University graduate is preparing for the Miss America competition in less than two months. “I haven’t done pageants my whole life,” Smith said. It wasn’t until her senior year of college when a friend suggested she run for Miss Purdue University that she considered competing for a crown. The aspiring physician assistant looked into the pageant and saw a scholarship opportunity. Smith spent hours of her childhood and adult life Irish dancing, so she knew what to

She taught private lessons at Mullane Healy Godley Academy in Elmhurst whenever she was home from college, and when she was at school, she introduced Irish dance to Golden Steps Studio in Lafayette, Ind. “As a dancer, especially Irish dancing, I suffered a lot of injuries,” Smith said. At 12 years old, Smith shattered her iliac crest, or hip, and needed physical rehabilitation. Smith didn’t let her injury slow her down, though. After a year off, she

still placed at the Irish Dance World Championship. Her injury also pushed Smith in other ways. Brittany “I think that Smith was my initial interest in medicine and preventative health,” Smith said. After receiving her health and kinesiology degree from Purdue in 2012, Smith moved to her hometown and spent the past year earning her medical assistant certificate. She plans to attend graduate school to be a physician assistant next year after completing her duties as Miss Illinois. Aside from the scholarship opportunities and chance to showcase her Irish dance skills, Smith is excited to give a voice to an issue close to her. Smith’s platform is titled “S.T.E.M. Taking the PULSE of American Healthcare.” Inspired by the demand she’s seen for medical professionals during her studies, she wanted to encourage STEM (science, technology, engineering

and math) education to begin as early as possible. “I understand the difficulty and the struggle of the sciences,” Smith said. She wished she had a stronger science background when she got to college. It’s an initiative her hometown believes in as well. The District 205 Foundation is working on a project to buy NOVA5000 data loggers for each middle school with the hope these tools will teach students to collect and analyze data. “I think that as a woman, too, we need to continue to promote that, because it is more of a male dominant field,” Smith said. A hard-working woman, Smith participated in a laundry list of clubs during college, including the Purdue dance team, Delta Gamma sorority and professional organizations such as the Health and Kinesiology Club. Used to doing everything on her own, the newly crowned Miss Illinois admits she feels like she’s stepped into the Hunger Games, with a team of people helping her prepare for her next endeavor – the Miss America pageant – but she’s grateful for the help. The pageant returns to its

home in Atlantic City, N.J. in September, which gives Smith and the rest of the contestants about two months to prepare. In addition to pages of paperwork and shooting a video for the national contest, every Miss raises money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Smith has set a personal goal to raise $8,000 before she leaves the first week in September. Service and fundraising are just one of the aspects she hopes to highlight during her year as Miss Illinois. Smith said the pageant is so much more than a beauty contest and has taught her life skills through interviews and exploring her personal opinions on current events. She said she will consider her time as Miss Illinois a success if she can get that point across. “I’m learning to really stand up for what [I] truly believe in,” Smith said. To help make her goal, Smith is hosting a fundraiser at the Maywood Race Track, 8600 W. North Ave., Melrose Park at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 2. ELMHURST – Two young ladies from the west suburbs expected to return from their post-college graduation trip to Peru with stories of their trek up Machu Picchu, or at the very least, a few more words in their limited Spanish vocabulary. Bringing home four mischievous balls of fur was not on anyone’s souvenir list. “I don’t think anybody has ever gone to Cusco and taken dogs home with them,” Elmhurst resident Laura Hildebrand said.

Not long after the two 22-year-old Valparaiso University graduates arrived in Cusco, a starving dog patiently poised outside of a KFC broke their hearts – along with their vacation plans – to attend the Cusco winter solstice festival. “From the first moment we got to Cusco, [dogs] were just everywhere,” Julia Trowbridge of Naperville said. While the two animal lovers saw dogs everywhere they went in the city, one dog in particular, which looked like she may be nursing puppies, was different. “The look on her face was

Artist retrieves $20,000 in stolen art By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – After months of searching, Elmhurst artist Penélope OsioBrown couldn’t believe it when a public goods auction company contacted her with images of her stolen artwork. “It was very shocking,” she said. After PropertyRoom.com received the 13 pieces signed by Osio-Brown from the Kansas City Police Department in Missouri, they followed a standardized process to authenticate the work. Eventually, the company contacted Osio-Brown directly, but nearly nine months after the theft, she almost couldn’t help but think the worst. “I thought maybe they’re found, but they’re all damaged,” Osio-Brown said. Amazingly, they weren’t. The pieces arrived wrapped in bubble wrap and fully in-

tact after police discovered them in a storage unit. When someone broke into Osio-Brown’s trailer last September after a Kansas art show, it wasn’t the first time she’d had artwork stolen, but this time, she sensed the criminals had little if any appreciation for art. “I think mostly, I was sad because I didn’t think these people knew what was in the trailer,” Osio-Brown said. The thought of her masterpieces ending up on eBay, Craigslist or, worst of all, the garbage led her to almost cancel her next art show scheduled for a week after the theft. Even with only half her usual inventory on hand and tools missing, her husband refused to let her give up. “My husband encouraged me and told me, ‘You have to go on,’” Osio-Brown said. So Osio-Brown, her husband and two daughters con-

tinued to show her work at art fairs, but all the while, she searched the Internet hoping to retrieve her lost creations. When PropertyRoom. com CEO PJ Bellomo discovered the $15,000 worth of art had been stolen from OsioBrown, he made a trip from the company’s Maryland headquarters to hand-deliver the abstract work last week. “Penélope’s reaction, it was not about the money,” he said. In fact, the artist admits she might hold onto a few of the recovered originals to remind her of their journey home. Osio-Brown said her work reflects what she sees, experiences and fears in life. The returned pieces now tell an important part of her story. “It’s been worth it,” she said.

Considering what we know and teach about water quality, this decision shows that the district is serious about its role as educator, not only of its students, but also of the community. Mother’s Who Tan Their Daughters Hides A recent small study provides some new insight into the tanning salon culture. According to the survey of over 200 young women between the ages of 18 and 30 years, nearly four women in ten said that their first experience with indoor tanning was with their mothers. In addition, these girls began tanning indoors two years earlier (14 instead of 16) than the others in the study and were almost five times more likely to be “heavy tanners” when they became college students. 8NEWS BRIEFS Elmhurst restaurant hosts Maine lobster boil ELMHURST – Cafe Amano may be in downtown Elmhurst, but that won’t stop its head chef from throwing a traditional Maine lobster boil. Executive Chef Marco Conte and his team will boil 1.5-pound Maine lobsters outside in pots set up on the sidewalk regardless of the weather. Italian-style coleslaw, corn on the cob and boiled red skin potatoes also will be served. Guests will be seated on the patio or in the dining room for the lobster boil from 3 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Cafe Amano,

Volunteers needed for prairie preservation ELMHURST – Every third Saturday of the month, volunteers meet at Elmhurst’s Great Western Prairie to maintain the area, but this month, they need extra help. The Prairie Restoration

group preserves the six acres of 10,000-year-old prairie between Spring Road and Salt Creek. It’s part of the original grasslands that used to cover the northern two-thirds of Illinois. Now less than one percent of the original prairie remains. Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at Berkley Avenue and the Illinois Prairie Path to keep the prairie thriving. Featured artist to speak at Elmhurst Art Museum ELMHURST – One of the Chicago-based artists featured in an Elmhurst Art Museum summer exhibit will explain his new artwork this month at the museum. An associate professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Adam Scott

took a new direction with his work featured in “FRAGMENT: Sampling the Modern” exhibit at the Elmhurst Art Museum. The exhibit also includes work by Leslie Baum, Diana Guerrero-Maciá and Jessica Labatte. Scott uses souvenir postcards, album covers, commercial packaging, cartoon characters and advertisements as raw material for his collage-based work. He then manipulates the images through copies, clear polymer and spray paint, among other treatments. In this way, he translates material products of American culture into dynamic abstract compositions. Scott will explain his work at 6:30 p.m. July 26 at the Elmhurst Art Museum, 150 Cottage Hill Ave. Admission to the event is free. Scott’s artwork can be viewed during regular museum hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 12 to 5 p.m. Sunday. To the Editor: Even in the time of Abraham Lincoln, you needed moral integrity plus either political capital or political savvy to get anything meaningful accomplished. Lincoln had the moral integrity and political; today’s politicians are floundering with only political capital and savvy. President Barack Obama’s lack of moral integrity is keeping him from accomplishing his agenda even with political capital and savvy at his disposal. Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has the moral integrity, but lacks the political capital and savvy and, thus, can’t get any of his agenda approved by the Illinois House. House Speaker Michael Madigan has political capital and savvy, but his lack of moral integrity is keeping the Illinois government prisoner for the sake of his daughter Lisa Madigan’s gubernatorial intentions. To the Editor: Our family have been residents of Elmhurst for over 20 years with no regrettable issues – until recently. We have a daughter attending College of DuPage who is employed part time by a business establishment in downtown Elmhurst. Due to the area flooding problem, her vehicle sustained interior and computer module damage. State Farm Insurance provided a rental vehicle (with Missouri plates) in the interim. She parked the vehicle (with Missouri plates) in the Charter One parking lot governed by S&S towing. To her dismay, the vehicle was towed because “no sticker, no hangtag” illegally parked on private property – there was no police warning ticket of any kind. The towing fees came to $198.50. I wrote to the mayor of Elmhurst but got no reply. Granted, parking is a problem in Elmhurst, but towing a vehicle not left overnight seems harsh and leaves this resident with a dismal opinion about Elmhurst!

ELMHURST – Police reported they recently conducted a series of routine liquor and tobacco compliance checks of Elmhurst vendors. Deputy Chief Dominic Panico said the Elmhurst Police Department receives a grant through the Illinois Liquor Control Commission to conduct the checks. Police also participate in education efforts to prevent tobacco and alcohol sales to minors. Panico said police check vendors who sell tobacco or alcohol in Elmhurst. They do not target any specific retailers. A July 5 check resulted in four citations for sale of tobacco to a minor and nine citations for sale of alcohol to a minor. Police said the checks were conducted between 5:35 and 8:49 p.m.

o matter how flu season shapes up this year, one thing’s for certain: Not everyone older than 50 is going to get vaccinated. Despite universal recommendations urging every person 6 months and older to get vaccinated, many Americans don’t get the flu shot, said Dr. William Schaffner, chairman of the Department of Preventative Medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. “Absolutely, unhesitatingly, no doubt. You should get your flu shot. And especially older people,” said Schaffner. “People 50 and older are the age group that will experience the most complications from influenza and they will be more serious complications, such as getting pneumonia or ending up in the hospital hooked up to a ventilator. Dr. Lisa Grohskopf, medical officer with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said “For more mature people, getting the flu shot is really important because as we age the immune system doesn’t respond as well as it did when we were younger.” But just how good is the flu virus? Last flu season, the vaccine was 56 percent effective when it came to curbing flu-related medical visits, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For people 65 and older, that number dropped to 9 percent effectiveness for the season’s most prevalent flu strain. Those statistics are eye-opening, but they should not stop you from getting vaccinated. “It’s not a perfect vaccine like the measles or polio vaccine is perfect. But it’s the best we have right now,” Schaffner said. “I like to use the quote from Voltaire: ‘The perfect is the enemy of the good,’

meaning that waiting for a perfect vaccine in the future is a sure way to catch the flu this season. While some people believe that the flu is just a bad cold, it’s really a “devilish virus,” Schaffner said. “It can take a healthy person and in just 48 hours put that person in intensive care,” he said. Older people are more at risk than the general population. People who are more likely to experience serious complications from the flu are “older, have an illness such as diabetes, are overweight, have underlying heart or lung disease or” whose immune systems are compromised, Schaffner said. “This is the one (illness) that year in, year out sends more than 200,000 to the hospital and causes over 30,000 excess deaths,” Schaffner added. The experts have answers ready for the doubters who say, “I got the flu shot, and then I still got the flu!” You may have caught the flu, but it made the illness milder, Schaffner said. “If you went to the doctor, you avoided going to the hospital,” he added. Older adults do a better job of getting their flu shots, with about 66 percent of people 65 and older vaccinated each year, Schaffner said. “One way to look at it is, that’s a huge achievement, but on the other hand, one-third of folks were not vaccinated,” he said. While the big push to get a flu shot begins in September when the vaccine becomes available, don’t hesitate to get vaccinated later in the season. “The peak month for the flu is February,” Schaffner said. A flu shot is “so easy to get,” especially at walk-in clinics offered at many pharmacies and grocery stores. You can’t get the flu from getting a flu shot, but it can come with some side effects, Grohskopf said, such as soreness, redness or itching at the site, or a mild fever or cold, which is preferable to the flu.

How to catch up on retirement savings By Money Living lot of people stress the importance of starting a retirement fund early, but many people don’t keep up with their retirement fund or even make one at all until it seems like it’s too late. hy not slow things down and enjoy the experience of travel by taking a train trip for your next vacation? “There are many appealing aspects of train travel,” said Regis St. Louis, Lonely Planet travel writer and coordinating author of the 2012 “USA” guide. “For one, it forces you to slow down and enjoy the scenery. You’ll have more of a connection to the lands you’re passing across — rather than just soaring over at 35,000 feet oblivious of the lavender fields, river valleys and other great scenery you might be missing.” The benefits For some trips, flying can’t be avoided, but traveling by train opens up a world of possibilities with abundant benefits. Trains: ◆ Drop you right in the middle of the city where all the action is rather than at an airport in the middle of nowhere. ◆ Hit big cities and picturesque small towns. ◆ Allow you to take more luggage for free. ◆ Allow you to stretch out and move freely with seating that may be reserved or open, more comfortable and possibly with facing seats. ◆ Have sleeper cars where you can rest and wake up in another state or country. You can also save money on a hotel room by taking an overnight train to your destination. ◆ Offer more selection of departure/arrival times. ◆ Have no security checkpoints. ◆ May be less costly (unless you splurge) and are more environmentally-friendly. “There’s also the camaraderie,” St. Louis said, “It’s easier to meet other travelers on a train. I think there’s something about this old-fashioned mode of travel that makes people more open to the delights of travel and sharing stories with others around them. … You’re also likely to meet like-minded travelers and that’s one of the great parts of travel — learning about other cultures and ways of life.” Traveling by train beats driving, too. You’ll avoid busy roads and the stress of traveling on the highways. “You can sit back enjoy the scenery, curl up with a good book or even do a bit of writing — letters, journals, stories — train travel seems conducive to the literary mind,” St. Louis said. Train travel fits your budget, whether that means senior discounts on Amtrak,

coach seats and a bag of snacks carried along, or high-end trains with luxury accommodations and world-class chefs. Fancy a drink? Many trains boast bar and cafe cars, which are a good place to relax with fellow passengers. Some trains even have smoking cars. Where to go There’s no easy characterization of train travel. There are iconic long-haul journeys such as a trip along the Trans-Siberian railway, which stretches more than 5,500 miles from Moscow to Vladivostok, Russia, and takes seven days if you don’t stop. Other transcontinental trips traverse America, Canada and Australia. First-time train riders might prefer a shorter trip and crossing a region rather than a whole country, or picking one country such as France or Italy, which have excellent train infrastructure. On another short trip, Amtrak’s Adirondack leaves the skyscrapers of New York City behind and cruises through the Hudson River Valley past West Point, then hugs the shoreline of Lake Champlain for 50 miles before ending in Montreal 11 hours later. History fans can step back in time and take a short journey on an old-fashioned steam train in southeastern Brazil or past Victoria Falls in southern Africa. St. Regis’ favorite train trip is the scenic journey in the Douro Valley from Porto to Pocinho in Portugal, a beautiful half-day adventure into the heart of Portugal’s most spectacularly set vineyards. Here are three other recommendations from St. Regis: ◆ In Canada, Via Rail operates the Canadian which makes the three-day journey between Toronto and Vancouver. The scenery, which takes in the northern Ontario Lake Country, the western plains and the looming Canadian Rockies, is spectacular, and you’re likely to see eagles, elk, moose and even bear. ◆ The narrow-gauge Durango & Silverton train shows off Colorado’s scenic side. This vintage steam-spewing locomotive climbs from 6,500 feet at Durango to more than 9,300 feet in Silverton and takes around 3 1/2 hours to make the 45-mile journey. ◆ How about having breakfast in London, lunch in Paris and returning to England in time for evening cocktails? Hop on the Eurostar for a 180-mph trip that travels via Chunnel under the English Channel and departs every hour.

Comfort, elegance and great food at La Tosca VILLA PARK – You can look all you like, but it’s unlikely you’ll find a more authentic Italian experience than La Tosca anywhere else. As popular as Italian cuisine is, it can be tough to find a unique experience. La Tosca achieves this with ambiance, class and fine food. When you drive up to the restaurant on St. Charles Road, it immediately stands out for its exterior, with an Italian villa-style façade and terra-cotta roof. Inside, you find they’ve somehow turned a dining room with an immensely high ceiling into an intimate setting, featuring lots of dark wood trim and a few faux cracks on the wall – evocative of Italy’s famously ancient architectural heritage. As a dining companion and I settled in for a recent evening, we were presented with menus for dinner, the night’s specials and wines. A nice touch on the wine menu are the suggested pairings of wines and meals. Knowing that I would likely opt for a pasta dish, I selected a glass of Ruffino Chianti. “Pair with pasta with tomato and grilled beef,” the menu says. For an appetizer, my companion and I shared the

Mozzarella Alla Tosca, which layered prosciutto, mozzarella, roasted peppers, leafy greens and olive oil. It made for a light and savory enticement – very tasty. Neither of us was in the mood for pizza, although La Tosca has an extensive list of options. I went for the Cannelloni Alla Romana: “Homemade pasta stuffed with meat and spinach with a basciamella tomato sauce.” My companion was tempted by several items on the specials menu, but ultimately went with the Saltimbocca: “Veal medallions, sage, prosciutto, mushrooms and mozzarella cheese in a demiglazed wine sauce.” After I enjoyed a minestrone soup that came with my entree, and my companion had polished off a delectable garden salad, we were, in short order, presented with our main courses. Before even taking a bite, we knew we’d be leaving with takehome bags; the portions were attractively presented and so generous we knew we wouldn’t be able to finish everything. I will admit that I heat up a frozen dinner for lunch now and then, and store-bought cannelloni is one of my more

Compared to what’s served at La Tosca, the microwaveable meal can hardly be considered food. I found myself letting each bite linger for a moment as I experienced all the subtle shadings of flavor. And, as expected, half the entree ended up being my lunch the next day, and much better than anything I could get at the grocery store. My dining companion said the veal medallions were tender and rich in flavor, and we were surprised to see that they also

came with a side of pasta with marinara sauce. They really don’t want you going home hungry! For dessert, I went for the chocolate truffle gelato, and my companion chose the profiterole – mini cream puffs in a chocolate mousse – which our server confessed was a favorite. We ended up sharing each other’s portions, and, if pressed, I’m not sure I could choose between the two, as both were extremely rich and sweet. You might feel inclined to

Ronnie Dunn to headline Rockin’ for the Troops By DEBBIE BEHRENDS dbehrends@shawmedia.com Ronnie Dunn admits he doesn’t know much about Operation Support Our Troops – America, but he’s willing to help veterans in any way he can. Best known for being half of the country music duo Brooks & Dunn, he is the headliner for the eighth annual Rockin’ for the Troops benefit concert Saturday at Cantigny Park in Wheaton. Along with Dunn, performers include Motown tribute band The Voices, the Kimo Williams Band playing rock tributes and original music, plus rockers Arra. Advance tickets are recommended.

“I got a call from my manager, and we were able to do it,” Dunn said in a recent phone interview. “We’ve done countless things to support the troops – concerts at military bases all over the country. It would be great to not have troops in harm’s way, but at the same time, there’s always going to be an opportunity to serve and pay tribute to them.” And expressing appreciation to the troops is what the volunteer-based, nonprofit OSOT-America is all about. For 10 years, it has embraced the mission: “to support the morale and well-being of American forces by providing comfort, resources and education to them and their families, both while

they are deployed in harm’s way and after their return.” The packing and shipping of care packages to Ronnie Dunn deployed military members is one of the things the organization does. As for Dunn, supporting the troops is not the only charitable work he has undertaken lately. He was among the stars at Toby Keith’s Oklahoma twister relief concert July 6. “We were actually on the ground outside Oklahoma City when the tornado came through Moore,” Dunn said of the May tragedy, noting that because of

expected bad weather, he had opted not to fly back to Nashville from a concert in Santa Fe, N.M. He said when his bus driver learned a tornado had touched down in Moore, “he fired up the bus, and we hit the road; we drove parallel to that storm system all the way to Memphis.” That experience may find its way into a song in the future as Dunn’s music continues to evolve. In response to people who call his new music “not country enough,” Dunn said, “There’s a place for that. I embrace it all. I can come out of a good, rocking song and dive into a hard-core country song. We’re at a time in this business when we’re redefining the rules.”

ELMHURST – Following a spring season that fell short of expectations and ended in a regional final, York baseball got back at it during the summer. The Dukes played juniors during the spring season, and those juniors are now in a leadership role in their first taste of life as seniors. Anthony Santos, Tyler Zunkel, Seth Dvorak, Jake Dvorak and Michael Ross were all regulars in the batting order during the spring, which gives the Dukes a lot of experience. There’s plenty of offensive experience, but Santos is the only major pitcher back for the Dukes. The summer is about finding out who can fill those other spots in the lineup and rotation. York’s summer season came to an end in the second round of the summer state playoffs with a 6-5 loss to Nazareth on Tuesday. The Dukes, who held the No. 6 seed out of 15 teams in the Fenwick regional, beat Addison Trail 3-1 on Monday. The Dukes didn’t play in any organized leagues like some teams, but played other unattached area teams on a Monday-Thursday schedule to allow players to leave with travel teams on the weekends. York faced off West Suburban Silver rivals Lyons Township and Downers Grove North as well as Naperville Central, Wheaton North and Wheaton Warrenville South among others. Juniors Ryan Gilmartin, Sam Craggs, Nolan Spencer, Matt Sabatini and Michael Homan saw plenty of time during the summer to earn some looks when the spring season rolls around. Seniors that saw bigger roles included Dan Cirone, Niall O’Brien, Mitch Miner and Nick Leone.

ELMHURST – When many people think of taekwondo they probably think of hand-to-hand combat and head-to-head sparring. That’s not all there is to the one of the world’s most popular forms of martial arts. Taekwondo also incorporates other skills that don’t involve sparring. Elmhurst Taekwondo brought a group of 15 competitors to Colorado Springs for the 2013 U.S. Open Taekwondo Hanmadang, a competition that focuses on those other aspects of Taekwondo, and came back with 27 medals. Elmhurst won seven gold, 15 silver and five bronze medals. The fifth annual tournament, which was held in the Chicago area before moving to

ELMHURST – The Elmhurst Electric 12U baseball team captured first place in a Roselle tournament to end an almost perfect season. The Electric took second place in every other tourney they entered. At the Roselle tourney, it was their turn to take first. They went undefeated in pool play against Roselle Arey, Darien Hornets and Libertyville. In the semifinal, they beat the Hornets once again and won big to move forward to the championship. The Elmhurst Cougars won a tiebreaker to put them in another semifinal game and also won.
