Looking back on Boy Scouts, Shiva smiled as he recalled trips to Florida for scuba diving, rock climbing at Devil’s Lake in Wisconsin and years of participating in the pine wood derby. “I think it has just been a really amazing experience because I’ve learned so much through the experiences I had,” he said. “The Eagle Scout project just sums up pretty much everything you learned in Boy Scouts.”

CLARENDON HILLS – It started out as basically a giant ashtray, but by the time one Boy Scout was done, it became a paradise garden. “The flower pot was there, but it was just used for cigarettes,” said 17-year-old Nikhil Shiva of Clarendon Hills. “There were some flowers here, but a lot of them were just dead.” Shiva started planning his Eagle Scout project last July to beautify the area near the front entrance of Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. At the time, a flower pot was used to house cigarette buds, flowers lay dead and lights were covered by tree brush. On June 23, Shiva and a group of 15 Boy Scouts got together to clean up the area and install a new garden, which included assembling and installing three benches. “It took around 6.5 hours, but I think I had 120 man hours total,” he said. Shiva planted three rows of yellow day lilies around the garden, about 40 total. He also cleaned up the area, laid mulch and trimmed tree branches. “It was hot, but there was a little bit of shade and a nice breeze,” he said. “Luckily, we finished just in time before the rain.” Working as a volunteer at the hospital, Shiva observed the site on a daily basis and realized it only was being used for smokers, which is how he came up with the idea to reinvent the area. Shiva had to raise $2,000 for the project, and he said

DARIEN – It came as no surprise to Pastor Walter Dziordz when Pope Francis cleared Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII to become saints. “You look at both these men, and they both exemplify the best in the Catholic Church, the deepest wisdom and the deepest teaching,” said Dziordz of Our Lady of Peace in Darien. According to a Vatican news release, Pope Francis approved a miracle needed to canonize John Paul ll and waived Vatican rules to honor John. The Vatican said Francis had the power to dispense with such requirements and proceed with one confirmed miracle to John’s name. It’s the character of the individuals, Dziordz said, that contributed to them being declared saints, which he said serve as role models to those following the Catholic faith. He said both men exemplify the best teachings of Roman Catholicism, and that’s why they’re being put forward as role models. Years ago, Dziordz got to have a private Mass with John Paul and said he immediately noticed how caring and approachable he was. Dziordz had
to make a presentation to him and said he was “really nervous.” “He took my hand and looked like he was very Walter fascinated and inDziordz terested in what I was saying,” he said. “I couldn’t help but smile because I knew what he was doing; he wanted to make me feel comfortable.” Dziordz said John Paul and John were well-liked not only among Catholics, but also across all faiths, believers and nonbelievers because of their character. John Paul was a world traveler, and John visited prisons to spread the message of healing. “The faithful can look upon them and say this is a person worth emulating,” he said. The Catholic Church always has held a foundation of helping the poor, and Dziordz said that was not only a strong characteristic among the two declared saints, but also with Francis. “Someone like Pope Francis, what’s notable, is he doesn’t drive around in a great limousine, but apparently rides the train or bus and he lives a very simple life,” he said. “As a bishop, he was always reaching out to poor people.”

By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Leadership shifted quickly Monday after Victor Casini resigned as District 86 school board president and turned in his letter of resignation to Superintendent Nick Wahl. “I found it impossible to devote adequate time to this position, to do a sufficient job and at the same time stay employed at my other job,” said Casini, who also works as a lawyer. Following the announcement, Vice President Claudia Manley assumed the role as the new district president and nominations were taken for vice president, which included Ed Corcoran and Kay Gallo. Secretary Michael Kuhn said he was worried Corcoran would have too much to handle being vice president as he is already active with
other committees. Kuhn said he would like to see some of the work spread around to other board mem- Victor Casini bers. “I’ve seen people where they hit rock bottom because they were so stressed out,” Kuhn said. “I think there are other people on this board that can step into that role and take some of the weight off.” Board member Richard Skoda disagreed and said there would not be added pressure on Corcoran because the position of vice president “has no responsibilities other than chairing a meeting if the president is not there.” “It’s not like he’s having extra homework every night,” Skoda said. Kuhn disagreed and
said when he served as vice president he had to watch everything, go through training and ran Claudia three meetManley ings. “By not serving as vice president, Rick, I don’t think you can appreciate that,” Kuhn told Skoda. Corcoran won the nomination for vice president by a final vote of 4-3. Manley said Casini told her of his decision “a while ago.” She said she is now looking forward to establishing common ground with board members who have different views, while Casini will stay on as a member of the board of education. “I tried to talk [Casini] out of it and he said no … he couldn’t because of his obligations,” she said.

Borizov could be sentenced to life in prison on Monday By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com DARIEN – The fate of Johnny Borizov will be determined Monday by Judge Daniel Guerin at the DuPage County Courthouse as he could be sentenced to life in prison for orchestrating the murders of three members of the Kramer family while at their Darien home in March 2010. After a four-week trial that started in April, a jury found Borizov guilty of three counts of first-degree murder and one count of solicitation of murder. The 31-year-old was convicted in May of orchestrat-
ing the murders of Lori, Jeff and Michael Kramer by convincing his friend, Jacob Nodarse, to shoot them to Johnny death in their Borizov home. On Monday, members of the Kramer family will be given the opportunity to address Borizov, and the former Willow Springs resident will have the chance to make a statement if he chooses. Nodarse, 26, formerly of Countryside, could be sentenced to 45 years to life in prison. Nodarse’s sentencing date is scheduled for Aug. 13.

Farmers market shines despite rain By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Shoppers took shelter from the rain under one of the tents at the Hinsdale Farmers Market on Monday at Burlington Park as a storm rolled in just in time for the morning commute. Lately, it seems like it’s always raining, and while it has put a damper on some summer outings, farmers are rejoicing because this season so far is the opposite of the severe drought experienced last year in the Midwest. “Right now, a lot of things are just starting to come in for

The rain stayed steady throughout the morning, but besides the smell of water hitting the pavement, there was an aroma of freshness in the
air that was unique in comparison with the produce in the aisles of a grocery store. Fresh produce lined Chicago Avenue, including turnips, cauliflower, onions, carrots, broccoli, garlic and an array of fresh fruit. Nichols Farm and Orchard based in Marengo has been going to the Hinsdale Farmers Market since 1980. Freeman said there aren’t many Monday markets to choose from in the area, and it’s this area that attracts the farm to keep coming back. “It’s a nice community of people who care about produce and supporting local farms,”
he said. The community is the reason Evergreen Farm out of Yorkville keeps coming back, because the owners have participated since the market came to Hinsdale 37 years ago. “We’re the only original ones on the whole street,” co-owner Steve Theis said. “Everybody else has come and gone.” Steve said the farm has a loyal following, and the turnout usually always is good Mondays. “I’ve seen a lot of kids grow up here,” co-owner Kathy Theis said. Once in a while, the rain
would tease owners and customers into thinking it was over only to rain harder. But that didn’t stop several people from getting out their umbrellas once again to enjoy fresh produce. “When the weather is good, things are good,” said Jeff Morlock, owner of J.W. Morlock and Girls, which was serving raspberries, blueberries and cherries. Rain or shine, Morlock has been going to the Farmers Market for 15 years and has no plans not to return. “We know a lot of people here, and it’s a good place to be,” Morlock said.

ings – an incident that has happened three times and hit two storefronts. The solution could be as simple as moving the meters from the curb to the middle of the parking lanes. “It would be something

likely result in the fewest amount of resources being allocated to the project and that would also still keep the look that’s similar to the rest of the downtown streetscape,” Scott said. The cost of doing the project is unknown, but Scott said one parking space would be lost by reconfiguring the poles’ placement. Scott said he believes the village can reuse the meter heads that are out there now as the meters would just have to be reinstalled onto new single poles. Scott said the poles would be standard and are to act as a visual indicator but could be reinforced with concrete if that is determined after research. For now, Scott and the committee are in the design phase, and the next step is determining cost. “It will definitely be formally considered at one point,” he said.

WDSRA celebrates 20 years in the area It’s hard to believe that it has been two decades since the WDSRA Foundation was established. For 20 years the foundation has been working quietly, yet ever so diligently, to make life better for families with special needs. The mission of the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA) is to provide community-based COMMUNITY programming opportunities VOICE that allow children, teens Sandy and adults with special needs the ability to grow Gbur and thrive while recreating. The sole purpose of the foundation was, and still is, to develop long-term programs of giving to support that mission. While there is a Board of Trustees to guide the foundation in its efforts, it is an army of individuals who have attended events, volunteered in our name, secured a sponsorship, or made a donation in the name of the foundation over the last 20 years that we celebrate. After 20 years we are grateful for the thousands of people that have shown their support. With the help of the foundation, WDSRA has been able to focus efforts on making high quality programs and services available to all who need it. Over the years, we have seen the cost of providing services rise. At the same time, with the tenuous job market and uncertain economic times, we have experienced an increasingly steady rise in demand for scholarship assistance for families. Through it all, the foundation has been there to assist in funding program supplies and scholarships, as well as bigger ticket items like vehicles and uniforms. Now, more than ever, we find ourselves relying on the steadfast work of the foundation and those that show their support for WDSRA through it. With the numbers of people being diagnosed with disabilities increasing, the latest numbers indicate that Autism affects one in every 50 U.S. children, we expect the need for services to also increase. With the help of the WDSRA Foundation, we hope to grow that small army of support so that every child, teen and adult who can benefit from our programs will have access to them. After all, our vision of Equal Fun for Everyone is to create a better quality of life for all.

About a year ago, Barbara Matt, a third-grade teacher at Monroe in Hinsdale, started a nonprofit group to raise awareness for Childhood Apraxia of Speech, a speech disorder. WILLOWBROOK – She has become known as somewhat of a guardian angel at Chateau Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Willowbrook. “I love helping the elderly people,” said Gwendolyn Neese-Smith, CNA and activity director at the Chateau. “I love it.” The Romeoville resident worked at the Chateau from 2004 to 2008, then returned in 2012. So far, her time back has been eventful. In March, she was the first to assist a resident who fell to the ground outside. While she was down, Neese-Smith provided the resident comfort and support. Two months before that, she saved another resident’s life. “She was choking on some meat, and I noticed she was turning blue,” Neese-Smith said. “I did the Heimlich maneuver on her, and we got it up.” For her effort, the Health Care Council of Illinois, Illinois Health Care Association and the Illinois Council on Long Term Care selected Neese-Smith as one of its 2013 Heroes in Long Term Care at nursing facilities throughout the state. The bigger reward for Neese-Smith though is what she does on a daily basis. She said knowing the residents are pleased with what she is doing makes her work truly gratifying. “I just enjoy knowing I’m helping them and making them feel good about what’s going on,” she said. “I treat them as if they were my parent or grandparent. I love what I do.” Neese-Smith said it’s the little things such as being polite to residents and always smiling that residents enjoy and are thankful for. “It’s not phony; it’s genuine, and it’s an expression of how I feel,” she said. “They really like that.”

Humane Society Pet Camp to return in August HINSDALE – They might be called the “dog days” of summer, but the children who participated in Hinsdale Humane Society’s Pet Camp learned about more than canines. During the course of one week, the HHS Pet Camp allowed campers going into fourth through sixth grades to gain hands-on experience with animals in educational settings such as the Brookfield Zoo, Mayslake Forest Preserve and Double J. Riding Club. Some activities included handling a corn snake and domestic rabbit at the zoo, grooming and tacking horses, solving a forest creature mystery and interacting with a service dog. Freddy’s Pizza serves quality Italian by the pound CICERO – Freddy’s Pizza in Cicero has an unassuming exterior that certainly doesn’t scream fine Italian dining. The sign looks like it hasn’t changed in decades, and typical black metal furniture fills the patio packed with patrons. Through the doors is a scene most commonly found on the streets of Rome. Cured meats hang from the ceiling, while loaves of fresh-baked bread and rows of Italian goods line shelves. Instead of a menu, there are large platters of whatever was cooked that day. Trays of ravioli, salads, gelato and other dishes adorn counters as employees and customers jostle for position and food. Food is weighed and priced by the ounce – the old “say when.” My fellow diner and I were in heaven. We are Italian food lovers, having separately spent time in the country. What to order? We watched our fellow customers. They chatted with the friendly and helpful staff and each other in a way that only locals could – pointing and getting samples of things they were unfamiliar with or undecided on. Eventually, we opted for a little of a lot of things. First, we shared a Caprese salad with a side of salami. The mozzarella clearly was fresh, with a mild tang and wonderfully spongy texture. The tomatoes were perfectly ripe with a bit of crunch to them, and the olive oil in which it was bathed was exquisite. The salami had just enough saltiness to add a lot of flavor. Next was a ricotta gnocchi in a tomato cream sauce. The potato pasta was unbelievably soft, and the sourness of the ricotta was the absolute star of the dish. The mild sauce kept the emphasis on the gnocchi and creamy cheese. And the sauce had us sopping up the leftovers with chewy fresh bread. We couldn’t resist grabbing a piece of pizza: a slice with olive, artichoke and prosciutto. The toppings were high quality, and the crust chewy and crispy. The fresh cheese, lightly seasoned tomato sauce, salty pork, olive and artichoke just worked. The last piece of dinner was a fried rice ball called an arancini, a personal favorite. The outer layer of light breading was perfectly crisp, and the inside was filled with a combination of rice, tomato, spinach and melty cheese that speaks to your soul. Fried rice balls are one of the great guilty pleasures in

Speaking of guilty pleasures, my friend and I couldn’t resist a last one. Not only does Freddy’s serve homemade gelato, but it serves gelato sandwiches. On bread. Really.
A scoop and a half of gelato on a special sweet bread is lightly toasted, cut into quarters and sprinkled with powdered sugar and chocolate sauce. How it works, I’m not sure. The different layers of sweetness each add a little something: creamy sweetness from the gelato, savory sweetness from the bread, and the dark sugary sweetness of the chocolate play together in a way that needs to be tried to be believed. For patrons dining in, there are tables inside and on the patio at Freddy’s Pizza, Gelateria and Italian Grocery. Another big plus about Freddy’s? That feast of fine Italian eating came without breaking any piggy banks.

Martin Joyce is spending his summer vacation on the tennis court with a racket in hand. Not long after claiming a singles state title as part of Hinsdale Central’s state title team, Joyce was back on the court playing in some of the biggest United States Tennis Association tournaments. “It started up pretty quickly,” Joyce said. “Between the district qualifier to qualify for the Midwest (Level 1 Outdoor)

closed and the district cup, it started right after the high school season.” The seasons may have switched from high school to USTA tennis, but what stayed the same was Joyce’s level of excellence. He had a strong
showing in the 18U singles bracket at the district championships in early June, then won all 10 of his matches in his next tournament action at the USTA Midwest Section team district cup as he helped the Chicago District place second. More recently, he teamed up with TJ Oosterbaan of Kalamazoo, Mich., to win the 18U doubles title at the USTA Midwest Level 1 Outdoor Championships. He also finished second in the singles draw at the same tournament. The tournaments have been coming fast and furious, to say the least. “When you’re going every day and going from tournament to tournament, it can get
Singles state champ Joyce gears up for USTA National Championships tiring,” Joyce said. “After the Midwest outdoor I took two or three days off to rest up. Some kids do back-to-back-to-back tournaments all summer, but I try to focus on the bigger ones.” The tournaments will keep coming for Joyce, who will compete in the National Clay Court Championships from July 14 to 21 in Delray Beach, Fla., for a nice change of pace. “I’m more comfortable on hard court and it’s probably my best surface, but I think it’s more fun to play on clay,” Joyce said. “It’s really a lot different.” After that he plans to enter the USTA National Championships in Kalamazoo to
continue his busy summer. He wouldn’t have it any other way. “The stuff that takes place over the summer is like the main thing,” Joyce said. “It’s not necessarily a bigger deal for the players, but the college coaches pay more attention and it’s more competitive than the high school season.” If the summer is primetime for tennis, then Joyce is ready for primetime, particularly when the National Championships come around. “Last year I won some rounds, but this year I think I can really do some damage,” Joyce said. “I should have a high seed so I should be able to do some damage in my draw.”

The end of the College World Series hardly signaled the end of Nick Burdi’s baseball season. During the spring, Burdi, a sophomore for the University of Louisville baseball team, helped the Cardinals to the Big East Conference regular season title by saving 16 games as a relief pitcher. Soon after Louisville’s season ended, Burdi joined some of the best players from around the country on USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team, which tours the country and the world playing college-level competition. Local fans have a chance to get a glimpse of Burdi and his electrifying fastball, which has been clocked at 100 mph, when the CNT visits Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva on Monday and Tuesday. Burdi saw his first action of the summer in the CNT’s third game. In an 11-3 win over Fayetteville on June 24, Burdi pitched a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts

More recently the duo, members of the Hornet Swim Club, were designated 2013 All-American swimmers by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association for their performances during the high school season. Both Lienhart and Portland were part of the Red Devils’ 400-yard freestyle relay team that finished fourth in the state with a time of 3:07.33. The relay, which ranked 54th in the country, swam its All-American time of 3:07.16 in a state preliminary race. Central graduates Connor Schroyer and Will Leach were also part of the relay. One came as part of the 200 freestyle relay that won a state title with a time of 1:23.43 and swam a 1:23.02 in the prelims to be ranked No. 3 nationally. Portland swam with Leach, Schroyer and then-sophomore Brian Powell on the relay. The other came from the 200 medley relay that includ-
ed Leach, Schroyer and Eddie Mapel. The quartet placed second in the state and was ranked 23rd in the country with a time of 1:32.86. Additionally, Portland swam to an all-state showing on his own in the 100 butterfly (12th, 50.99). Mapel earned All-America honors in the 100 breaststroke (56.42) and Ryan
O’Donnell as a diver. Interestingly, Lienhart and Portland were on the Hornet Swim Club medley relay team as 10-year-olds, when that relay captured first place at the Age Group State Championship meet in 2007. “I am very proud to have the privilege of coaching such good kids and awesome athletes,” Hornet Swim Club head coach Mirko Mirkov said. “I am looking forward to seeing what else they will accomplish in their high school and Hornet careers.” Portland also has been accepted as a member of the USA Swimming 2012-13 Scholastic All-America Team, through which USA Swimming recognizes members who excel both in the classroom and in the pool. The team is made up of sophomores, juniors and seniors who have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher (on a 4-point scale) and who have achieved the required time standard in one or more swimming events. Portland maintains a GPA over 4.0 and achieved the time standard in
50 and 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, and 100 butterfly. Portland also finished ranked in the top-10 in the state in eight events (50 and 100 freestyle, 100 and 200 backstroke, 200 and 400 individual medley, and the 100 and 200 butterfly) in the short-course season, which takes official times from across the state in competitions in 25-yard pools. Eight other Hornet Swim Club members joined Portland in the top-10 in the state for the 2012-13 short course season. They are: Dan Ciciora (200 breaststroke), Ryan Clancy (100 and 200 breaststroke), Mitch Courtney (100 and 200 breaststroke), Alex Knutte (50, 100 and 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 butterfly), Billy Leader (100 and 200 breaststroke), Grace Rogowski (50 backstroke and 100 freestyle), Jacob Stukas (50, 100 and 200 backstroke) and Jason Yang (50,100 and 200 freestyle, 100 and 200 backstroke, 100 butterfly, and 200 individual medley).

Disc golf is a growing sport and courses are popping up all over the Chicago area and the country in recent years. According to dgcoursereview.com, a website that pools information about courses with an emphasis on player reviews similar to how yelp.com works for restaurants, there are 190 courses in Illinois and 4,267 in the United States. Most of those are free public courses built on park district land, but there are some private courses as well. Molex’s Lisle Campus had a nine-hole course built in 2010. Edgebrook Golf Course in Chicago has a set of 18 baskets set up on the golf course that allows players to play alongside golfers, and even rent a cart, as long as they are willing to pay for a round. Some courses have been around since the 1970s – West Park in Joliet was created in 1979 – but as the popularity of the sport has grown demand for courses has gone up. Among the 15 courses in the western suburbs, 11 were built since 2005 and six since 2010. “The last five years was a great growth period for disc golf,” said Cathy Kamm, a Lombard resident that designs courses with her husband, Mike, under the name Midwest Disc Golf. “Park Districts are looking for disc golf now. It used to be disc golfers looking for courses.” Kress Creek Farms in West Chicago is an example of a newer course built by a park district. West Chicago Park District Executive Director Gary Major said it was a simple story as to why they put in the 18-hole course in 2011. “We had 50 acres of land, but it had topography and trees on it,” Major said. “We had good space for it.” Since disc golf doesn’t require maintained greens and since flat, open land is typically undesirable, Kress Creek Farms was an ideal fit. The Riverside Public Library Timeline of important dates …..
April 21, 1927 Referendum passed establishing a library and levying a tax for this purpose. April 17, 1928 First Library Board elected. June 25, 1920 Bond issue referendum to construct a building for $75,000.00 passed 120-70. February 8, 1930 By election of the people, the Library Act was amended to permit the library to be built in any park in the Village under exclusive control and supervision of library directors. April 11, 1930 Hired Grace Gilman as librarian prior to opening; signed agreement with architect Connor and O’Connor. May 26, 1930 Memorandum of agreement signed between Village and library to permit the library to erect and maintain a library on Village land. August 6, 1930
Awarded General Contract for construction of library building to Arvid H. Viren for $51,630. October 4, 1930 Ground breaking and laying of cornerstone. November 13, 1930 Resolution passed to construct a joint heating plant with the Township for heating both the Town Hall and the Library. April 4, 1931 Dedication and opening of the library. Those present included Mr. Connor, Architect of the building and Edgar Cameron, a Chicago artist who painted the mural of Marquette and Joliet. Robert Somer- ville, first Library Board President, presented the Cameron Mural and decorative map of the region as a personal gift to the Library. Over 1800 people registered for library cards the first week the library was opened. April 22, 1931 Organizational meeting for Friends of the Library. Mrs. Joseph Jaros was elected President. December 22, 1931 Cut annual operating budget from $8,990 to $6,500 due to low rate of tax collection during the depression. September 30, 1936 Board voted to replace library doors with solid oak entrance doors. February 24, 1937 Riverside Historical Society materials housed in the Library. February 1, 1940 Village moved out of basement room of the library. Basement remodeled into a children’s room. May 1, 1966 Riverside Public Library becomes one of the first libraries to join the new Suburban Library System (SLS). April 1975 Riverside Public Library was recipient of the “All-Star Library Award” from the Illinois Library Association. Referendum passed to increase library tax rate from 19 mils to 40 mils. November 1984 Referendum by voters to fund a $1,500,000 addition to the library passed 5,196 to 4,470. Architect : Frye Gillian Molinaro; Contractor: A.C.M. Associates; Size:12,500 sq. ft. addition to the 5,761 sq. ft. building. April 14, 1985 Groundbreaking for new addition. September 7, 1986 Grand re-opening of the library with new addition. October 1989 and January 1990 Flamingo Film Company spent four days filming an Encyclopedia Britannica Film in the Library. December 1991 Riverside Public Library pictured on the cover of American Libraries magazine. April 1997 Riverside Public Library building is used for the taping of the Oprah Winfrey Show book discussion of Stones from the River by Ursula Hegi. October 1997 The Riverside Public Library joined the World Wide Web: www.sls. lib.il.us/rss/ June 1998 Library awarded grant of $33,306 from the Illinois State Library to renovate Terrace into the Quiet Read ing Room. Construction began March 1999.

June 2007 Library receives a $12,000 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation to complete the replace- ment of lighting in the Library. July 2008 Bats at the Library, a children’s book by Brian Lies, is published by Houghton-Mifflin Corporation. The “Library” used in the book is the Riverside Public Library. October 10, 2008 Author Brian Lies comes to Riverside to read from and autograph his book, Bats at the Library. The Library celebrates this event with “Batoberfest”, an evening of fun for the entire community. Bat images lit the Library Building and the Village’s Water Tower to publicize the event. May 2010 The Library is involved in the Language of Conservation and is the recipient installations of poetry and other related materials throughout the building. “The Language of Conservation”, is an initia- tive of the Poets House in partnership with the Chicago Zoological Society, Riverside Public Library and Brookfield Public Library, as well as a consortium of zoos and libraries nationwide. It is made possible by a National Leadership grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and will continue for three years. October 2010 The Library celebrates the 80th Anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone and begins its 80th year of service to the people of Riverside. April 2011 The Library celebrates 80 years of service to the community! March 2012 The Library’s Sustainable efforts project, We R Riverside Responsible, kicks off.

April 5, 1999 The front of the Library was filmed for use in an episode of “Early Edition”. November 7, 1999 Dedication of the Quiet Reading Room. Young Adult Area opened on lower level. August 2002 Young Adult Area opened on lower level. April 2004 Lighting fixtures, made to look like those which originally hung in the Library, were installed in the Great Room. The fixtures were purchased with money received from the estate of Grace A. Board, a for- mer staff member and friend of the Library. April 24, 2005 The Library’s 75th Jubilee Year begins with a Commencement Celebration. A whole year of programs, events and celebrations took place in recognition of the Riverside Public Library’s 75th Anniversary. All costs incurred and associated with the Anniversary year were funded by the River side Friends of the Li brary. June 2005 Library receives grant of $ 27.000 from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation to replace lower level light- ing. April 30, 2006 The Riverside Friends of the Library mark their 75th Anniversary. Their many years of support to the Library is celebrated. June 2006 The Library receives a $17,000 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation to replace the lighting in the Adult Non-Fiction area. September 2006 Landscaping project completed. Funded by the Riverside Garden Club, the Frederick Law Olmsted Society and the Riverside Friends of the Library.

It has nourished two generations with quality programs by sharing the simple belief that art has value and can enrich anyone’s life. We proudly celebrate our 20th Anniversary on May 18th with Prom-O-Rama! It will be a festive way to kick off our next decade of the RAC and will truly be a night to remember!” Since 1993, the Riverside Arts Center (RAC) has been providing Riverside , its surrounding suburbs and the city of Chicago with exhibitions, arts classes, and special events. The RAC is located in the heart of Historic Riverside. It includes the Freeark Contemporary Art Gallery and a variety of studio space, including a renowned clay studio that has a full range of electric, raku and stoneware kilns. RAC offers more than thirty art classes each term (Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall) for children and adults in mediums ranging from clay, to oil painting, to fused glass jewelry, to printmaking. The RAC also offers provide tours, field trips, and curriculabased workshops for public and private schools and professional development opportunities for teachers. The Spectacles will be twenty minutes long. They will take place in Guthrie Park, using the SONIC BOOM “contraption” pictured below. Poetry written by Central School students will play through speakers, and the fourth graders will perform and interact with the audience in the park. This is an immersion experience for the entire community. We hope all of you will make a point of seeing at least one Spectacle!

Riverside Arts Weekend (RAW) celebrates both visual and performing arts with a multi-media juried fine arts fair and full musical performance schedule centered in Riverside’s Guthrie Park. Glamour takes center stage on Sunday, May 19 at 2:00 p.m. as RAW presents Revelry, a runway show featuring emerging designers from Dominican University. Revelry highlights fashion as a form of art with the cutting edge work of nine (9) alumnae of Dominican University’s Apparel Design program. The designers will present collections true to their respective artistic visions and highly unique from one another.
Revelry opens with the work of established designer Caroline Borucki (caro___) who has retail presence in New Buffalo, Michigan. It then segues to the work of emerging designers Alexandra Howard (Elmwood Park), Izzy Heras (Romeoville), Amanda Lindley (Tinley Park), Samantha Petkofski (Niles), Iris Carney (Berwyn), Molly Morettes (Park Ridge), Hannah Gerhardt (Omaha, NE) and Erin Von Kannon (Monmouth). Many of the designers will also exhibit portfolios and samples of their work at a Dominican University collective booth throughout Riverside Arts Weekend.

The mother and son team make up Higgins Glass Studio, 33 E. Quincy, entrusted to the Wimmers to carry on the art crafted by their long time mentors, Fran and Michael Higgins, who began the company in 1948. Louise and Jonathan agree that it was Fran’s ideas and Michael’s energy and ingenuity that led these two huge talents to start their work out if their Chicago apartment in 1948. Over the years their art sold in such major retailers as Marshall Field’s, Georg Jensen and Bullocks Wilshire, the very high end store in the California based department store chain. In 1966, the Higgins decided to return to private studio work and set up their offices in Riverside. The website notes that “here they were free to set their own goals, meet their own standards and design in the direction their hearts and minds led them.” There’s a lot of history in Higgins, and the Wimmers are proud of their work and the company.
