8NEWS BRIEFS Fire department to conduct hydrant flow test ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Fire Department will conduct a hydrant flow test Thursday, July 11, at 3800 Commerce Drive, St. Charles. The test will begin at 8 a.m. and is expected to be finished by 9 a.m. the same day. Residents might experience rust in the water during or immediately after the procedure. The water will be safe, but residents might want to refrain from doing laundry. If rusty water discolors clothes while being laundered, call the Public Works Department at 630-3774405 to request a rust-removing solution packet.

Back Country Roads to perform in park ST. CHARLES – Back Country Roads will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 11, as the next artist for the St. Charles Park District’s Concerts in the Park series. The event will be at the Lincoln Park Gazebo, along Main Street between Fourth and Fifth streets. Playing mostly new country, a few older classics and a few songs from other genres, the band’s vocal blend and musicianship is what sets them apart from the rest. to clear and beautify community open space and cemeteries; to do grounds work at Anderson Animal Shelter in South Elgin; and to spread mulch around trees at Primrose Farm, among other projects. Eight volunteers were dispatched to Primrose, to assist workers with keeping up the publicly owned working farm, dedicated to preserving and demonstrating skills and farming techniques from the early 20th Century. Peter Ball of Elburn, captain of the church’s Primrose Farm volunteer team, said the work is important to the church and community. “The statement we’re making is to love thy neighbor,” Ball said. “And so we’re trying to be neighborly and to help people. “We’d like to do it more.” Keck said this year marked her first time participating in this particular project, although she has volunteered, as a high school student and an adult, on church mission projects in Chicago and elsewhere in the U.S. She said experiencing Primrose has prompted her to consider volunteering individually at the farm more regularly. “I felt for a while that any type of organic farming is important,” Keck said. “Plus, it’s nice to be outside.”

Katelyn Keck is no stranger to church-related service projects or missions work. She also wants to learn as much as she can about organic farming. So when the opportunity arose to combine both elements into one Sunday morning, Keck said she couldn’t say no to the chance to get to work with other members of her church at the St. Charles Park District’s Primrose Farm. “I’m here with my church family, and I can volunteer and help promote a movement that is just very important and needs help,” Keck said. “It’s a good way to spend a Sunday morning.” Keck and several dozen other volunteers from Congregational United Church of Christ of St. Charles on June 30, fanned out into the communities surrounding their church to take part in service projects. The effort came through the church’s annual “Jesus Has Left the Building” program. Launched three years ago, the program takes place on a month with five Sundays. On the fifth Sunday, the church substitutes regular Sunday morning worship services with service projects throughout the Tri-Cities and in surrounding communities. “It’s our church’s mission to try and get out into the community and help our fellow neighbors,” said Bob Brautigam, a Congregational UCC member who helped coordinate the projects this year. ST. CHARLES – Mayor Ray Rogina has announced the two aldermen and two St. Charles residents nominated to serve on the city’s newly formed liquor commission. Council members include 2nd Ward Alderman Rita Anne Payleitner and 5th Ward Alderman Maureen Lewis. The two city residents include Charles A. Amenta II, who has lived in St. Charles for six years, and Robert Gehm, who has lived in St. Charles for 23 years, according to a news release from the city of St. Charles. Rogina will continue to serve as liquor commissioner, and the other members of the commission will serve as advisory members. The City Council approved the new liquor commission, and members will review applications for liquor licenses and conduct disciplinary hearings. Amenta is a financial representative at Northwestern Mutual and serves on the Reneaux Manor Homeowners Association Board, the release stated. Gehm has more than 30 years of business experience in accounting, finance and project management, and also has volunteered with several local organizations, according to the release.

“The creation of the Local Liquor Control Commission puts a solid process in place to regulate liquor-related issues in St. Charles,” Rogina said in the news release. “Both resident nominees will bring useful talents to the commission, and I am grateful to them for

A woman weighing less than 120 pounds can reach a blood-alcohol level of 0.05 after just one drink, studies show. A man weighing up to 160 pounds can reach 0.05 after two drinks. Maridis said he hoped that patrons would act responsibly, regardless of what the law is. In Illinois, a driver is considered to be under the influence if that motorist has a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08 or more, has used any illegal substance or is impaired by medica-

tion. A driver’s blood-alcohol level is based on the ratio of alcohol to blood or breath. The Illinois General Assembly in 1997 approved lowering the illegal blood-alcohol level from 0.10 to 0.08. NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman said states need to lower the limit even further, to 0.05, to make a dent in the problem of impaired driving. “Most Americans think that we’ve solved the problem of impaired driving, but in fact, it’s still a national epidemic,” said Hersman in May, in announcing the recommendation. “On average, every hour one person is killed and 20 more are injured.” According to the NTSB, nearly 10,000 people are killed in crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers every year in the United States, and more than 173,000 are injured, with 27,000 suffering incapacitating injuries.

“The research clearly shows that drivers with a BAC above 0.05 are impaired and at a significantly greater risk of being involved in a crash where someone is killed or injured,” Hersman said. She noted that 100 countries on six continents have blood-alcohol limits set at 0.05 or lower. State Rep. Kay Hatcher, R-Yorkville, said she believes the recommendation merits further study. “I’ve done enough background reading to believe it’s worth investigating further,” Hatcher said. “Our focus should always be public safety.” Hatcher said state lawmakers might debate the issue soon and that some sort of legislation suggesting the lowered limit might be filed in the next session. “Between now and then, there should be a lot more data we will have access to,” Hatcher said. “Without data, it’s only an opinion.”

O’ Sole Mio serves authentic Italian experience By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – An owner of O’ Sole Mio in Batavia said when customers stop in, they can expect to have as close to an authentic Italian experience as possible. Tory and Andrea Chiappelli, who live in Batavia, own the new cafe, bar and gelato shop on River Street with their partner, Tony Natale. The shop opened in late March, and Tory Chiappelli said they’ve gone through quite a bit of gelato since. “We have been making 12 to 18 pans a day. ... The pans are five liters each,” she said. “We didn’t have any idea that the gelato would go that fast.” Tory Chiappelli, who learned the art of gelato making from the Carpigiani Gelato University in Bologna, Italy, said making gelato is her creative outlet. “Our goal was to bring the Italian experience to America,” she said. While they serve the more traditional flavors, such as chocolate, vanilla and pistachio, they also have a case of gelato dedicated to the more experimental flavors, such as one flavored with Fruity Pebbles cereal. “Every time I go to the grocery store, I see something and say, that would be good in gelato,” Tory Chiappelli said. “My goal is to continue making new stuff so every time you come in here, there’s something new to discover.” All of the gelato is freshly homemade on site in the “Gelato Lab.” The difference between gelato and ice cream is that gelato is made with milk, and ice cream is made with cream, Tory Chiappelli said. It’s not fluffy like ice cream, she said, and the flavors hit the palette a little harder than ice cream. Thirty-six flavors are always

on display, and 12 of those flavors are dairy free. Some of those flavors include sorbetto, or fruitbased flavors, which come in options such as pear, blackberry, strawberry and lime. All flavors are gluten free, except for the flavors in which an ingredient with gluten is added, such as birthday cake or cookie dough. Some flavors, such as the margarita, are infused with alcohol. Tory Chiappelli said they decided to open the shop in Batavia because that’s where they live, and also because there aren’t many other places in the area to buy authentic Italian gelato. She said she’s in the process of making cakes using semifreddo, which she said is a cross between mousse and gelato. She said she hopes to start offering classes on how to make gelato. But gelato isn’t the only category on the menu. The shop also offers a full bar, cafe and food menu. Because gelato can be viewed as a seasonal treat, the owners decided to add a full bar and lighter dishes so customers can enjoy the restaurant year-round, whether they want gelato or not. O’ Sole Mio has a 2,000-squarefoot outdoor patio space and also has a front room with fireplace. Tory Chiappelli said they have live music on the weekends, too. Tory Chiappelli said while they offer lighter fare and the cafe, their goal is not to compete with local restaurants, but rather to complement them. She said O’ Sole Mio is a place to stop and have lunch, or stop and have a martini and an appetizer before going out for dinner. It’s also a place to grab some dessert after a meal. “We’re trying to really be different,” she said.

Wine Lovers Weekend and the Taste of Galena are so successful, committee members from each decided to collaborate on a new event. The result is the Galena Food and Wine Festival. “We are excited to be working with the Wine Lovers’ Weekend Committee to launch this new event,” ARC Taste of Galena spokeswoman Sarah Peterson said. “It won’t replace the ARC Taste of Galena we hold in February, but rather it will be a nice compliment featuring 12 area restaurants.” Tim Althaus, the president of event sponsor Family Beer and Liquor, will select more than 150 wines for the event. Althaus also compiles the wine list for the Grand Tastings at Wine Lover’s Weekend, and I trust he will again

Live music, a silent auction and raffle also will be part of the event. “There is no park district in Galena, but there is the ARC, which has day care, preschool, fitness programs and other events for all members of the community,” event spokeswoman Janelle Keeffer said.

Through 36 openings this season, the safe path to bragging rights is a guess in the neighborhood of 5,465 fans. That’s the average attendance at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, a figure 590 fans ahead of the same juncture last season. Cougars general manager Curtis Haug can’t help feeling blue when crunching the numbers, a nod to the predominant color of the parent club residing about an hour down the road. Haug expected a bump when the Cougars and Cubs announced a two-year player-development contract last September, which helps explain his comfort in discussing it. “There’s really no other way to say it other than the fact that overall, the ticket sales are up significantly, and they continue to trend that way,” Haug said. “Now, if we could just get Mother Nature to cooperate with us a little bit, I think we’ll have a huge, huge second half of the season.” The Midwest League waded through more rain-outs in April than during the entire 2012 season, a statistic personified in the Cougars’ 70 for 70 showing at the box office last season. With several home series remaining – including the one over the Labor Day holiday – Haug is optimistic the Cougars can supplant last season’s average of 5,587, which ranked third in the 16-team MWL. Attendance for Kane County Cougars games at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva is up over last year. weather will help, which is a focus around the league after a wet first half. “It wasn’t real bad, but we’re in the red a little bit,” MWL president George Spelius said. “I’m sure we’ll catch up with it or [be] close to it, you know what I mean.” Since relocating from Wausau, Wis., to Geneva before the 1991 season, the Cougars have provided the MWL with a fan base that routinely pulls the league’s average attendance higher. Last season marked the first time the Cougars fell below 400,040 fans since 1993. The team attracted at least

500,000 fans from 2001-06, when it was affiliated with Florida and Oakland. Throw in the Cubs connection and a stable of highly touted prospects that includes outfielder Albert Almora and first baseman Dan Vogelbach, and Haug only figured the interest would grow. Then again, this already was one of the pre-eminent operations in the minor leagues. “Whether it’s the billboards that the Cubs have in the outfield or the logos in the lawn area or the fans sitting in the seats that are wearing Cubs paraphernalia – the jerseys and the T-shirts and the

caps and all that – it’s definitely noticeable,” Haug said. “But there’s still that, ‘Hey, we’re the Cougars and we’ve got a great brand and we’ve been here 23 seasons.’ But being affiliated with the Cubs is definitely a great thing for us.” The game-day experience also excites visiting players. Sam Roberts, a second baseman in the Oakland organization, played with Burlington at the end of last season and now suits up for Beloit after the A’s also signed a new PDC in September. Neither city averaged more than 1,096 fans from 2010-12.

“When we did stay, the hotel’s really nice [at Pheasant Run Resort],” Roberts said. “Normally, you get a pretty good crowd. They’re always into it, so I enjoy it, for the most part.” Beloit returns to Geneva in late August, closing out a summer in which the Cougars expect to attract the franchise’s 10 millionth fan. “We’ve got a lot in store in the second half, and we’re looking forward to it,” Haug said. “And we’re looking forward to seeing people here at the ballpark enjoying themselves.”

Menus can be much more than the inspiration for just that one restaurant meal you might be pondering. Taking a peek online ahead of time or just perusing before ordering can be a lightning fast way to snatch a few meal ideas. Most menus give dish descriptions, including ingredient combinations. Let that be your invitation to try ones that catch your fancy at home. I recently looked up a famed New York City Italian restaurant we’d be visiting. The walnut salad caught my eye: a simple combination of nuts, raisins, romaine, freshly shaved Parmesan cheese in a mustard vinaigrette. Without ever having tasted the real thing, I enjoyed just that within minutes with dinner at home that night, economically and quickly preparing the dressing by just whisking a few dashes of spicy mustard into a bottled light balsamic vinaigrette I had tossed with the rest of the ingredients, all of which I had on hand.
