BATAVIA – Windmill City Festival will be Friday, July 12, through Sunday, July 14, at the Riverwalk, on North Island Avenue and Houston Street in downtown Batavia. Admission is free. A day’s work as a skate guard at Funway By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – As Top 40 pop music pulsated in the background, Chris Carroll skated to the middle of the roller skating rink at Funway Ultimate Entertainment Center, which was filled with youngsters enjoying the afternoon. As a skate guard at Funway, it is Carroll’s job to ensure safety on the rink, and to help anyone who needs an extra hand. A few minutes later, Carroll reached his hand out to a youngster who had taken a tumble. He then took another spin around the rink to make
sure no one else needed help. Sure enough, his help was needed again. He spotted a youngster whose skate had fallen off, and quickly helped him put it back on. It’s all in a day’s work. “It’s never dull, unless you only have two people out on the rink,” Carroll said. “You have to constantly pay attention. You are constantly watching everybody.” And while he tries to help as many people as he can, sometimes that’s just not possible. “A woman once twisted her ankle after falling down,” Carroll said. “I had tried to help her, but I’m not Super-
man. I try to save everybody I can.” His efforts have not gone unnoticed. Jodi Foland, a manager at Funway, said Carroll is “an excellent skater.” “He started out as a mascot and worked his way up to being a guard and DJ,” Foland said. “He really loves his job, and that shows. He is on a first-name basis with a lot of our regulars. He’s definitely one of our best.” Carroll, 19, of Batavia, has been a skating guard at Funway since 2011. The job is fitting, as he learned how to skate at Funway. “I’ve been going here since
I was 9,” he said. “I loved going here as a kid, and I thought it would be a good job to have.” For Carroll, skating was a natural fit, and being a strong skater is a necessary part of the job. He shows off his skills as he weaves around the rink, pivoting effortlessly as he scans the scene. “I love being out on the floor,” Carroll said. “You have to be a good skater. I’ve played two years of hockey and skating since I was 9.” In his job, Carroll wears a referee shirt, an appropriate form of dress because he also is required to make sure people are abiding by the rules
while skating. One rule that he strictly enforces is the nohat policy. “You’re not supposed to wear hats because they could fall off and become a tripping hazard,” he said. Besides helping others who find themselves in trouble on the rink, Carroll also doles out advice to make them better skaters. “I tell them never to lean back when they are skating,” he said. “I’ll show them how to skate out, and to take their time, and not go too fast.” Carroll said he loves his job and working at Funway. “It all pretty much started for me right here,” he said.

BATAVIA – Aldermen were to scheduled review plans July 9 for an industrial development on land along Kirk Road originally proposed for town houses at a Joint Committee of the Whole meeting. The 56-acre property, known as Prairie Commons, is on the east side of Kirk Road at Wind Energy Pass. City officials in 2005 annexed the property. The original development included residential zoning on the eastern 36 acres, with 242 town homes proposed. The western 20 acres was to be zoned general commercial. “Since the development was approved, only the city water tower and associated watermains have been constructed on this property,” Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening said in a memo to aldermen. “No development of the property has occurred since that time, and it has been marketed for sale.” Skokie-based The Missner Group now proposes to build two industrial buildings on the 56-acre property, Buening said. One building would be on the eastern part of the property and would be 495,000 square feet, he said.
The second building would be along Kirk Road and would be 300,000 square feet. “The Kirk Road building could be used for either traditional industrial/warehousing uses, or could be used for other commercial uses such as sports or recreation facil-

smallest volume restaurant,” said Laurie Roscoe, director of operations for Gill Management, which owns and operates several Burger King restaurants in the Chicago area, including one in St. Charles. “It really hurt us when Chick-fil-A and Golden Corral opened.” Chick-fil-A in February opened a restaurant along Randall Road in Batavia, and Golden Corral in November also opened a restaurant along Randall in Batavia. Roscoe said the growing Randall Road corridor also hurt the restaurant’s business. Burger King sees about 450 customers a day at the Batavia restaurant, Roscoe said. In comparison, the St. Charles location sees 1,000 customers a day, she said. The Batavia Burger King opened for business in May 1988. “I was the first manager to run the first shift on the first day of business,” Roscoe said. Although the Batavia lo-
cation will close, employees there will not lose their jobs, she said. “Everybody has a place at the other Gill Management locations,” Roscoe said. Roscoe didn’t rule out that Burger King might open at another location in Batavia. “It’s very, very sad that the restaurant is closing,” she said. “At the same time, we are looking at different locations.” Gill Management decided not to go ahead with plans to remodel the Batavia restaurant. Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said other national food chains have expressed interest in the site because the building has a drive-thru window. “Everybody wants the drive-thru window,” Schielke said. He is hopeful Burger King will find another location in the city. “I certainly think we are trying to keep the door open for them to open in another location,” Schielke said.

BATAVIA – Batavia School Board members continue to look at a proposal for an estimated $13.4 million in improvements to Batavia High School’s athletic fields. The three new members on the Batavia School Board along with the other board members were briefed about the proposal at a school board meeting June 25. Kris Monn, the district’s assistant superintendent for finance, emphasized there is no timetable for the project. “These projects could also be phased,” Monn said. “They could be phased in over many years.” The improvements are part of a proposed master plan for the fields. The master plan was developed after meetings were held with groups that use the athletic fields, school district administration, maintenance staff and school board members. “We will bring it back this summer and ask for this to be the vision of the board and ask you to adopt it,” Pat Browne, the district’s director of buildings and grounds, told board members. Residents also can comment on the plans at the district’s website, www.bps101. net. Chicago-based architectural, engineering and construction firm Wight and Company came up with an estimate of $13.4 million for the project. That includes
$4.5 million for the high school’s football stadium, including installation of a synthetic turf field and improvements, such as bleacher seating for 2,500, a press box, a scoreboard and stadium lighting. The proposed master plan also includes $4.2 million for installation of a multiuse synthetic turf field and other improvements; $1.5 million for a new maintenance garage/storage facility; $787,000 for the northwest parking area; $715,000 for the varsity baseball field; $616,000 for the junior varsity baseball field; $590,000 for the varsity softball field and $408,000 for tennis court lighting. As proposed, trees in an arboretum on the athletic fields would be removed to make way for the improvements. “We’ve had to remove trees in the arboretum that were infested with the emerald ash borer or too densely planted,” Browne said. “We’d like to see that redeveloped and re-memorialized in an area that people can enjoy more.” Browne said the improvements will allow students to practice and compete on high school grounds, which isn’t the case now. The improvements aren’t ranked in terms of priority. He said expanding the track to eight lanes would help when the high school hosts bigger track meets.

A woman weighing less than 120 pounds can reach a blood-alcohol level of 0.05 after just one drink, studies show. A man weighing up to 160 pounds can reach 0.05 after two drinks. Maridis said he hoped that patrons would act responsibly, regardless of what the law is. In Illinois, a driver is considered to be under the influence if that motorist has a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08 or more, has used any illegal substance or is impaired by medica-
tion. A driver’s blood-alcohol level is based on the ratio of alcohol to blood or breath. The Illinois General Assembly in 1997 approved lowering the illegal blood-alcohol level from 0.10 to 0.08. NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman said states need to lower the limit even further, to 0.05, to make a dent in the problem of impaired driving. “Most Americans think that we’ve solved the problem of impaired driving, but in fact, it’s still a national epidemic,” said Hersman in May, in announcing the recommendation. “On average, every hour one person is killed and 20 more are injured.” According to the NTSB, nearly 10,000 people are killed in crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers every year in the United States, and more than 173,000 are injured, with 27,000 suffering incapacitating injuries.
“The research clearly shows that drivers with a BAC above 0.05 are impaired and at a significantly greater risk of being involved in a crash where someone is killed or injured,” Hersman said. She noted that 100 countries on six continents have blood-alcohol limits set at 0.05 or lower. State Rep. Kay Hatcher, R-Yorkville, said she believes the recommendation merits further study. “I’ve done enough background reading to believe it’s worth investigating further,” Hatcher said. “Our focus should always be public safety.” Hatcher said state lawmakers might debate the issue soon and that some sort of legislation suggesting the lowered limit might be filed in the next session. “Between now and then, there should be a lot more data we will have access to,” Hatcher said. “Without data, it’s only an opinion.”

O’ Sole Mio serves authentic Italian experience By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – An owner of O’ Sole Mio in Batavia said when customers stop in, they can expect to have as close to an authentic Italian experience as possible. Tory and Andrea Chiappelli, who live in Batavia, own the new cafe, bar and gelato shop on River Street with their partner, Tony Natale. The shop opened in late March, and Tory Chiappelli said they’ve gone through quite a bit of gelato since. “We have been making 12 to 18 pans a day. ... The pans are five liters each,” she said. “We didn’t have any idea that the gelato would go that fast.” Tory Chiappelli, who learned the art of gelato making from the Carpigiani Gelato University in Bologna, Italy, said making gelato is her creative outlet. “Our goal was to bring the Italian experience to America,” she said. While they serve the more traditional flavors, such as chocolate, vanilla and pistachio, they also have a case of gelato dedicated to the more experimental flavors, such as one flavored with Fruity Pebbles cereal. “Every time I go to the grocery store, I see something and say, that would be good in gelato,” Tory Chiappelli said. “My goal is to continue making new stuff so every time you come in here, there’s something new to discover.” All of the gelato is freshly homemade on site in the “Gelato Lab.” The difference between gelato and ice cream is that gelato is made with milk, and ice cream is made with cream, Tory Chiappelli said. It’s not fluffy like ice cream, she said, and the flavors hit the palette a little harder than ice cream. Thirty-six flavors are always

All flavors are gluten free, except for the flavors in which an ingredient with gluten is added, such as birthday cake or cookie dough. Some flavors, such as the margarita, are infused with alcohol. Tory Chiappelli said they decided to open the shop in Batavia because that’s where they live, and also because there aren’t many other places in the area to buy authentic Italian gelato. She said she’s in the process of making cakes using semifreddo, which she said is a cross between mousse and gelato. She said she hopes to start offering classes on how to make gelato. But gelato isn’t the only category on the menu. The shop also offers a full bar, cafe and food menu. O’ Sole Mio has a 2,000-squarefoot outdoor patio space and also has a front room with fireplace. Tory Chiappelli said they have live music on the weekends, too. Tory Chiappelli said while they offer lighter fare and the cafe, their goal is not to compete with local restaurants, but rather to complement them. She said O’ Sole Mio is a place to stop and have lunch, or stop and have a martini and an appetizer before going out for dinner. It’s also a place to grab some dessert after a meal. “We’re trying to really be different,” she said.

AURORA – Trace Adkins, Aaron Lewis, Blackberry Smoke and Drake White will take the RiverEdge Park outdoor theater’s main stage Saturday, July 13, as part of Trace Adkins Country Lineup. Gates open at 2 p.m. with Drake White opening at 4 p.m. Blackberry Smoke will perform at 5:30 p.m.; Aaron Lewis will perform at 7 p.m.; and Trace Adkins will perform at 8:30 p.m. Drake White, who has a Kid Rock country sound, will perform songs from his singles list, including “The Simple Life.” Blackberry Smoke is comprised of five friends who play southern country rock reminiscent of Lynyrd Skynyrd, with a hint of twang. The group’s singles include “Good One Comin’ On” and “Pretty Little Lie.” The band has opened for Zac Brown Band, ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The car show will run every Thursday evening in July and August. Dozens of classic cars, including muscle and rare cars, motorcycles and trucks will be showcased. Wine Lovers Weekend and the Taste of Galena are so successful, committee members from each decided to collaborate on a new event. The result is the Galena Food and Wine Festival. “We are excited to be working with the Wine Lovers’ Weekend Committee to launch this new event,” ARC Taste of Galena spokeswoman Sarah Peterson said. “It won’t replace the ARC Taste of Galena we hold in February, but rather it will be a nice compliment featuring 12 area restaurants.” Tim Althaus, the president of event sponsor Family Beer and Liquor, will select more than 150 wines for the event. Althaus also compiles the wine list for the Grand Tastings at Wine Lover’s Weekend, and I trust he will again

With the amazing smoked barbecue meats of Chef Ivo’s Place and classic Italian fare from Fried Green Tomatoes amongst the restaurants participating, the culinary offerings at the Galena Food and Wine Festival should be as stunning as the wines. A portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit the Galena Arts and Recreation Center, which serves as a local community center that hosts programs for artists, children, families and seniors. Live music, a silent auction and raffle also will be part of the event. “There is no park district in Galena, but there is the ARC, which has day care, preschool, fitness programs and other events for all members of the community,” event spokeswoman Janelle Keeffer said.
Where to go The Galena Food and Wine Festival will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Galena Convention Center, 900 Galena Square Drive, Galena. Tickets cost $50 and may be bought online at www .galenafoodandwinefestival. com. Because Wine Lovers Weekend regularly sells out, and while this is the first installment of the Food and Wine Festival, my advice is to get your tickets early for a chance to experience the collection of epicurean delights.

Through 36 openings this season, the safe path to bragging rights is a guess in the neighborhood of 5,465 fans. That’s the average attendance at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, a figure 590 fans ahead of the same juncture last season. Cougars general manager Curtis Haug can’t help feeling blue when crunching the numbers, a nod to the predominant color of the parent club residing about an hour down the road. Haug expected a bump when the Cougars and Cubs announced a two-year player-development contract last September, which helps explain his comfort in discussing it. “There’s really no other way to say it other than the fact that overall, the ticket sales are up significantly, and they continue to trend that way,” Haug said. “Now, if we could just get Mother Nature to cooperate with us a little bit, I think we’ll have a huge, huge second half of the season.” The Midwest League waded through more rain-outs in April than during the entire 2012 season, a statistic personified in the Cougars’ 70 for 70 showing at the box office last season. With several home series remaining – including the one over the Labor Day holiday – Haug is optimistic the Cougars can supplant last season’s average of 5,587, which ranked third in the 16-team MWL. Attendance for Kane County Cougars games at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva is up over last year. weather will help, which is a focus around the league after a wet first half. “It wasn’t real bad, but we’re in the red a little bit,” MWL president George Spelius said. “I’m sure we’ll catch up with it or [be] close to it, you know what I mean.” Since relocating from Wausau, Wis., to Geneva before the 1991 season, the Cougars have provided the MWL with a fan base that routinely pulls the league’s average attendance higher. Last season marked the first time the Cougars fell below 400,040 fans since 1993. The team attracted at least
500,000 fans from 2001-06, when it was affiliated with Florida and Oakland. Throw in the Cubs connection and a stable of highly touted prospects that includes outfielder Albert Almora and first baseman Dan Vogelbach, and Haug only figured the interest would grow. Then again, this already was one of the pre-eminent operations in the minor leagues. “Whether it’s the billboards that the Cubs have in the outfield or the logos in the lawn area or the fans sitting in the seats that are wearing Cubs paraphernalia – the jerseys and the T-shirts and the
caps and all that – it’s definitely noticeable,” Haug said. “But there’s still that, ‘Hey, we’re the Cougars and we’ve got a great brand and we’ve been here 23 seasons.’ But being affiliated with the Cubs is definitely a great thing for us.” The game-day experience also excites visiting players. Sam Roberts, a second baseman in the Oakland organization, played with Burlington at the end of last season and now suits up for Beloit after the A’s also signed a new PDC in September. Neither city averaged more than 1,096 fans from 2010-12.
“When we did stay, the hotel’s really nice [at Pheasant Run Resort],” Roberts said. “Normally, you get a pretty good crowd. They’re always into it, so I enjoy it, for the most part.” Beloit returns to Geneva in late August, closing out a summer in which the Cougars expect to attract the franchise’s 10 millionth fan. “We’ve got a lot in store in the second half, and we’re looking forward to it,” Haug said. “And we’re looking forward to seeing people here at the ballpark enjoying themselves.”

Menus can be much more than the inspiration for just that one restaurant meal you might be pondering. Taking a peek online ahead of time or just perusing before ordering can be a lightning fast way to snatch a few meal ideas. Most menus give dish descriptions, including ingredient combinations. Let that be your invitation to try ones that catch your fancy at home. I recently looked up a famed New York City Italian restaurant we’d be visiting. The walnut salad caught my eye: a simple combination of nuts, raisins, romaine, freshly shaved Parmesan cheese in a mustard vinaigrette. Without ever having tasted the real thing, I enjoyed just that within minutes with dinner at home that night, economically and quickly preparing the dressing by just whisking a few dashes of spicy mustard into a bottled light balsamic vinaigrette I had tossed with the rest of the ingredients, all of which I had on hand. Try some of the other split second menu mainstays that follow.
Breakfast Risotto Upon Rising: Emulate this cafe and serve risotto with cooked smoked bacon, Parmesan, fresh herbs, green peas and parsley topped with poached eggs.
