Learn techniques at kayaking rescue class BATAVIA – A kayaking rescue class is set for 6:15 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, at Harold Hall Quarry Beach, 400 S. Water St., Batavia. Cost is $59. Participants will learn rescue techniques as well as effective boat control for better turning and maneuvering. Participants should have taken the K1 and K2 class or have a good knowledge of the forward and sweep strokes. Class includes a sea kayak, PFD, paddle and paddle float. Kane County residents can check out flood aid Kane County residents who were affected by the severe storms and flooding between April 16 and May 5 are eligible to register for federal disaster assistance. Individual assistance for homeowners and renters can include grants to help pay for temporary rental assistance, home repairs and other serious disaster-related expenses not met by insurance or other assistance programs. Also, low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration are available
to cover residential and business losses not fully compensated by insurance. The deadline to register for FEMA disaster assistance is Tuesday, July 9. BATAVIA – Doreen Dorr of St. Charles watched as her 3-year-old daughter, Dylan, splashed in the shallow water at Harold Hall Quarry Beach, at 400 S. Water St., Batavia. Dorr and her children are regular visitors at Quarry Beach. For Dorr and other families, attending the quarry is a summertime ritual. “It’s more real,” she said. “They have an actual slide and beach. It’s a nice, real feel.” As the summer heats up, more visitors are heading to Quarry Beach, something that has become a tradition for generations of families. And last year, the facility enjoyed several at capacity crowds, thanks to a combination of warm weather and a new liner installed in an attempt to provide warmer water temperatures. Before the liner was installed, water as cold as 55 degrees was being pumped in by a well. The liner, which was installed last year, helped the temperature of the water reach 80 degrees last season, officials said. Kari Miller, the district’s director of marketing and public relations, said the previously frigid water temperatures were beginning to affect attendance numbers. Attendance dropped from 40,000 patrons in 2006 to just 20,000 visitors in 2009, she said. But there were many days last year that Quarry Beach was at capacity with 1,500 people, Batavia Park District Executive Director Allison Niemela said. Records indicate last year’s attendance, 45,630, was the best since 2002. Quarry Beach’s distinct history is part of its appeal. After it operated as a quarry for years, a man named Frederick Beach bought it in 1920 and donated the property to Batavia Township. The township created one swimming area from the six ponds in the quarry and named it the Frederick H. Beach Park and Pool. The Batavia Park District took over its operation after the park district formed in 1969. The facility was renamed

Harold Hall Quarry Beach in 1993, in honor of former park board commissioner Harold “Bosco” Hall. The problem with the water temperature started after a dam was removed from the adjacent Fox River in 2004, causing the quarry to leak nearly 250,000 gallons of water a day into the Fox River. A well was dug to replenish the water and keep it at safe swimming levels. However, the well pumped 55-degree water into the quarry, and the sun could only do so much to heat the water, Miller said.

pendent on Mother Nature,” Niemela said. “We have seen marked improvement since we installed the liner. The improvements made to Hall
Quarry Beach have led more people to test it out for themselves, and make it a destination for them for the summer.” Roxanne Willis of Batavia said she brings her two children, Lydia, 6, and Ivan, 9, to Quarry Beach on a regular basis. “They love it,” Willis said. “There’s sand that they like to play in. They always run into friends here. They stay here for three to four hours at a time.” Willis doesn’t take a dip in Quarry Beach’s pool that often, but she said that Quarry Beach is a unique experience, and she said she boasts about it to her friends. “I tell other friends in other parts of the country that we don’t have a pool, we have a quarry,” she said.

Batavia educator to be part of Google Teacher Academy By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Angie Sutherland, instructional technologist for Batavia School District 101, knows the importance of using technology to help students learn.
Sutherland recently was selected to be part of the next Google Teacher Academy, which will be Wednesday, July 24, in Chicago. Only 50 people have been selected to be part of the academy, which recognizes educators for using technology in innovative ways.
She said she was honored to be selected. “I was not expecting to be accepted,” Sutherland said. “I know people who have been rejected multiple times.” At the beginning of the school year, Sutherland helped implement an iPad program at

Museum brings Civil War celebration to Batavia

The Depot Museum in Batavia is one of more than 1,800 museums across America to offer free admission to military personnel and their families this summer in collaboration with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families and the Department of Defense. The free admission program is available to military personnel and up to five of their family members. “Blue Star Trevor Bauer Museums is a collaboration between the arts and military communities,” said NEA acting Chairman Joan Shigekawa. “Our work with Blue Star Families and museums ensures that we can reach out to military families and thank them for their service and sacrifice.” The Batavia Depot Museum’s exhibit “Red White & Blue” focuses on the day in the life of a soldier. The exhibit will be on display through Sept. 1. The exhibit also runs in alignment with the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. What better way to help remember than to recognize the Batavia and Fox Valley participants of the war? Chris Winter, curator of the Depot Museum, is responsible for bringing the exhibits to life, which isn’t an easy task. “I put about a month to two months of time into researching and finding artifacts or photographs for display before the exhibit even goes up,” Winter said. The “Red, White & Blue” exhibit includes artifacts that soldiers would use on a day-to-day basis. Items include a wool uniform, a toothbrush, playing cards, a comb, a shaving mirror and musical instruments that soldiers used to play for recreation and also on the battlefield. Children

will be invited to try on the uniform to experience what it may have been like for a soldier. One of the most historical pieces of the exhibit is a 34-star American flag. This particular flag is painted with Batavia history. It was carried by a man named William Steward, a Batavia soldier, during the famous Sherman’s March to the Sea in 1864. “This made me fully realize the significant role that Batavia soldiers played in the war,” Winter said. The exhibit ends just in time for the Depot Museum’s Civil War Celebration on the Batavia Riverwalk
Sept. 7 and 8. Visitors can talk with soldiers and civilians in period dress, experience what the “Batavia Boys of 1862-1864” went through as they lived and died during America’s brother vs. brother war, and learn about the men from this age who served their country. Throughout the Civil War event, visitors also will have an opportunity to learn about the types of units soldiers would have served in, listen to music that kept the soldiers grounded on the battlefield and the home front, and see and touch actual objects and reproductions of objects from the Civil War at the Depot Museum. In short, the event will lead you through the past so you can better understand the war’s impact on Batavia and the Fox Valley. County Board members differ on countywide mental health improvements By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County Board members agree that the distribution of mental health services in the county needs to be improved. But County Board members differ over what should be done to improve that situation. On June 25, the County
Board received a report from its Mental Health Advisory Committee. The committee was established about two years ago in response to a change in state law requiring the county to evaluate ways to improve the disbursement of treatment opportunities for mental illness, substance abuse and developmental disabilities.
In the past 15 months, the committee has conducted surveys and public forums, and compiled those results into recommendations to the County Board. William Beith, assistant Gilberts village administrator and mental health committee member, laid out the three recommendations, which included creating a central website
to list “relevant treatment options” in Kane County. The committee further asked the county to support the concept of establishing a single, countywide board, called a “708 board,” to distribute funds for mental health services. Currently, only portions of the county are served by township- or city-based 708 boards,

Home sellers found significantly more buyers in May, as the housing market in and around the Tri-Cities continued to show signs of newfound strength in rebounding from the depths of its crash. In May, home sales in the Tri-Cities of St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia, combined, increased 61.2 percent from the same month a year earlier, according to the
most recent round of home-sales data. The MainStreet Organization of Realtors, a trade group representing Chicago area real estate agents, reported that 166 detached single-family homes sold in the Tri-Cities in May. A year earlier, the three communities combined to log 103 home sales. That increase marked an acceleration of the trend that had been ongoing through the spring. In April, for instance, home sales activity in the Tri-Cities increased

GENEVA – More than $1.18 million in grants from the county’s riverboat fund soon could be on its way to more than 40 local community service organizations after a County Board committee gave it a nod. On June 26, the County Board’s Finance Committee unanimously recommended the full County Board approve the funding requests to be paid out of money received by the county from Elgin’s Grand Victoria Casino. The annual grants, which range from $5,000 to $98,000, will be used to fund projects run by the organizations. Some grants, for instance, would be used to develop local food pantries, improve Fox River water quality, repair homeless shelters, create a visitors center in downtown Geneva, expand an arts studio in Batavia, expand and improve technology at a cancer resource center in Geneva, and help a local Salvation Army post buy new vehicles to transport food. Grants were selected for funding by the County Board’s
Riverboat Committee after an examination of written requests submitted by the organizations. The money to be awarded comes from funds the county collects from the Grand Victoria under the terms of a longstanding agreement. The County Board also approved spending $3.57 million of this year’s collections from the Grand Victoria on programs run by the county government. The amount received annually by the county is tied to the Grand Victoria’s revenue. That amount has fallen through the years from as much as $12 million more than a decade ago to $4.4 million this year. To maintain funding levels for external grants at about $1 million, as they had been in years past, the County Board would need to dip into about $10 million in the riverboat fund that had accumulated through the years. The Finance Committee only briefly discussed the external grants before recommending approval. The measure could go to the full County Board during its meeting in July.

Writer draws inspiration from St. Charles for latest novel By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – For some St. Charles residents, the setting of Lynn Kear’s latest crime fiction novel might feel eerily familiar. That’s because the fictional city in Kear’s novel, “Relative Innocence,” is loosely based on St. Charles, where Kear lived for about 20 years. She graduated from St. Charles High School in 1975, and her third novel hit bookshelves in February and is available online. The story takes place in a small Illinois suburb called St. James, a fictional city that, much like St. Charles, also is situated on the banks of a river. It follows a spree killer’s son, a suspected serial killer’s daughter and an attorney who befriends them. Kear said she references St. Charles street names, the cold northern Illinois weather and the river. “The river plays a huge part,” she said, noting that it’s called the St. James River in her novel. “When you grow up in that area, the river is huge. It’s a big part of life.” Kear said her previous novel, “Tighter Tighter,” also was based on a city much like St. Charles. Her first novel, “Murder in a Buckhead Garden,” is based on Atlanta. Kear lived in St. Charles from the late 1960s to the early 1980s and now lives in Stone Mountain, Ga. Kear – a novelist, playwright and biographer – earned degrees from Aurora College and Northern Illinois University. She earned her Ph.D. while living in Georgia and spent almost 25 years teaching various courses, such as creative writing, film, history and public speaking, at colleges and universities. But she credits a lot of her success to the education she received while growing up in St. Charles.

“I do want to say that I had great teachers at St. Charles High School. I honestly think that my success, whatever that has been, has been largely because of that,” she said. “In
teaching, I’ve been around people without a good education, and I’m so happy to have had the opportunity to attend school in District 303.” Kear has written a few biographies, as well as two books on reincarnation, but her novels have centered on crime fiction. She said actual crimes sometimes inspire the plots of her novels. She noted that she drew her inspiration for “Relative Innocence” from a crime that was committed in Athens, Ga., and also is loosely based on the
Drew Peterson case in Chicago. Peterson is a former police officer who was convicted in February of killing his ex-wife. “I wondered, what would it be like to be the child of somebody accused of that?” Kear said. “There’s something about crime fiction that is very tantalizing for writers, and I think for readers.” “Relative Innocence” is available to buy online at www .amazon.com and www.barnes andnoble.com for $13 to $15, and on Kindle for about $5.

I was careful not to ruin my appetite by eating too many chips, because I wanted to fully enjoy my entree. The Mexican sausage torta arrived piping hot. At the time I ordered it, I didn’t even know what Mexican sausage tasted like, but I decided to be adventurous. I wasn’t disappointed. The sausage was spicy but not too spicy, and everything tasted freshly made.
My co-worker was equally impressed with his steak burrito, which he thought was filling and tasty. He also was impressed with the generous size of the burrito. I decided to top off the meal with a slice of flan. The flan was creamy and rich, a perfect end to the meal. The bill was also a pleasant surprise – only $20.16 for the both of us. So if you’re looking for authentic Mexican food that won’t put a dent in your wallet, Taqueria El Sazon is your place.

BATAVIA – It’s no secret that central Kane County has its fair share of Mexican restaurants. That said, those who discover Taqueria El Sazon, at 8 N. Island Ave. in downtown Batavia, will find it is a worthy addition to the array of Mexican food options in this area. The restaurant recently opened in the storefront that formerly housed Pizza Hut/WingStreet. The first thing one notices is how friendly the wait staff is. Moments after walking into the restaurant, my co-worker and I were seated in a booth. It took a few minutes for us to decide what we wanted. Taqueria El Sazon’s menu has a number of tantalizing items, from breakfast to tortas, burritos, tacos, fajitas and seafood. I opted for the Mexican sausage torta, and my co-worker ordered the steak burrito. While we waited for our entrees to arrive, our waitress brought us a generous amount of salsa

I always liked the sound of acoustic instruments, and a friend of mine invited me to join her for a class at Old Town. I liked being there, and I thought, “Maybe I can get good enough and teach here one day.” I had actually started some classes out here in the suburbs, and was teaching privately in my home apartment. I was trying to gain experience to ask for a teaching job at Old Town, but as it turned out, they called me. I was lucky enough to get in right when the school was in the beginning of its reemergence. So I was able

and stuff like that. And I’ll bring my banjo along to do some traditional banjo tunes.
ES: You’ve taught at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago for more than 25
in all of my classes is that music is fun, music is for fun. It’s fun to play with others and sing with others. It’s such a basic human activity. I try to keep everybody’s feet on the ground.
ES: How did you get involved in folk music in the first place? MD: I like the term folk. It’s a very fuzzy term, and that’s one of the things I like about it. I love traditional songs, but I also love new things too. When I was a kid, John Denver, Peter, Paul and Mary, and Gordon Lightfoot were on the radio. Bob Dylan was one of my favorites, and still [is] one
of my favorites. I discovered Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly, and I felt like I was kind of home, and that music has always been the kind of thing I return to. I’m very comfortable with this music as an avenue for the way of expressing myself. What I loved about folk music was the narrative, the inherent storytelling of it. I feel close to it. By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Progress has come too slowly for Luke Johansmeier’s liking these past several months, so simply stepping foot on the baseball diamond qualifies as a hopeful sign. “Just getting back into it, getting used to everything,” Johansmeier said. “I’ve played baseball every day for a few weeks now, so it’s maybe getting a little better.” Johansmeier, who will be a junior at St. Charles North in the fall, missed his sophomore baseball season after suffering a broken collarbone in a Jan. 31 car accident. The early stages of his comeback are unfolding as Johansmeier competes with the St. Charles Post 342 legion team and with North’s summer team. One of the younger members of the legion team, the diminutive Johansmeier is seeing time at second base and designated hitter, although his

Post 342 coach Dale Wilderspin acknowledges Johansmeier’s physical limitations – even at second base, he’s unable to play both games of a doubleheader – but Wilderspin still considers Johansmeier an impressive competitor in the mold of his older brother, Jake Johansmeier,
who is playing collegiately at Eastern Illinois University. “He’s a battler at the plate,” Wilderspin said. “He very seldom gets overwhelmed at the plate. He’ll put the ball in play, and he’s come up with some big hits when you think he’s going to get overwhelmed.” Johansmeier’s collarbone broke because of the force of his seat belt’s reaction to
the accident. He knows the result of the accident could have been much worse, and he needs to look only at his father, Jay, for evidence. Jay Johansmeier was driving Luke home from an offseason, infield workout when their Honda Civic hit a vehicle that Jay Johansmeier said pulled out in front of them in a Lisle intersection. He was hospitalized for several weeks after the accident and only recently has regained his ability to walk normally, and remains unable to be as active as he would like. Luke Johansmeier, 16, was released from Edward Hospital the night of the accident but soon realized his much-anticipated high school baseball season – he was a strong candidate to make the varsity team as a sophomore – was in peril. He hoped to at least salvage a slice of his sophomore year but wasn’t cleared to play until just after the North Stars had been
eliminated from the postseason. Grateful as he is now to play ball, additional patience will be required until he feels like his old self. “My arm, it hurts when I throw,” Johansmeier said. “Because the collarbone is shorter and it it pops out whenever I throw. ... It takes a few months for it to get back to what it was.” Until he’s able to throw the way he’s accustomed, Johansmeier is putting higher expectations on himself to thrive in other areas. “I’ve got to work on my hitting because my throwing’s not going to be that good, so I’ve got to do [other things] to compensate for it,” Johansmeier said. Wilderspin is optimistic that Johansmeier will emerge from his recovery back on track as a promising infielder. “He battles through it,” Wilderspin said. “He’s going to be a good, little player.”
Local baseball players set sights on Taiwan By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A group of local youth baseball players shouldn’t have much trouble whipping up a compelling “What I did this summer” essay once the new school year arrives. Several players from the Kane County Bronco League 13U age group are planning a trip of a lifetime Monday, Aug. 5, to Thursday, Aug. 15, to Taiwan, where they are scheduled to play nine games in 10 days against Taiwanese teams. “Lots of videos, lots of pictures,” said Batavia Bandits coach Mark Pelley, the trip’s chief organizer. “A lot
of memories.” On Monday, July 1, players, coaches, family members and Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke gathered at Prairie-Lathem Park for a kickoff gathering that included photos with the boys flanked by a U.S. flag. Pelley said his understanding is this will be the first U.S. youth baseball team to make a trip to Taiwan. “We’ve been told by the Taiwan people that we are the first American youth team to go to Taiwan to play,” Pelley said. “They’ve had relationships with some Korean teams and some Japanese teams, but they’ve never had a U.S. team come visit them. We’re supposed to be
the first, and they’ve been coming over here since the ’70s. “The Taiwan Little League guys have been in our [Little League World Series] since I think ’77. But this guy that’s in charge of it thinks ‘No, we’ve never had a USA team express interest [in playing in Taiwan].’ So we’re pretty excited about that.” The unorthodox tour was set in motion by connections from Pelley’s business dealings. Pelley, who works in the hardware industry, said he goes to Taiwan about six times a year, and his wife, Sherry, was born there. Pelley said he was conducting business with a man from Taiwan a few years ago
