LEMONT – It didn’t take long for Aubree Tally to decide the theater stage was where she belongs. “I think it was honestly my first show,” she said, of a community theater production of “Annie” the summer before she entered second grade. “I’ve wanted to do theater since then and knew I wanted to continue to do it as a profession if I could and was talented enough to consider this as a profession.” The Lemont High School senior will finish an accomplished theater career at the school by playing the title role in the musical “Peter Pan.” The show runs from Thursday, May 16, to Saturday, May 18. This is the fourth year Tally has been cast in a lead role in the school’s musical. But she has found new things to get excited about playing Peter Pan. “It’s a great experience because there’s so much more to this role than acting,” she said. “There’s the flying aspect and just being a different gender is just a whole new thing.” Working with professional flyers has been an adjustment. “It takes trust. It’s a little scary at first, but I’m pretty comfortable now,” she said. Tally has had many theater influences inside and outside of school. A longtime mentor has been David Lindley, who was the technical director when she performed in her first musical, “Annie.” She has continued to work with him – he is the assistant director for “Peter Pan” – and has gone to him for career advice. Lindley has been impressed with the dedication Tally always has shown to becoming a professional

Neither Oakwood nor River Valley went into lockdown mode in response to the threat, but district officials increased hallway supervision and bag checks on Monday and Tuesday as a precautionary measure. The board met to honor outgoing board members Kevin Doherty, Karen Siston and Lisa Wright and to seat newly elected board members David Deitemyer, Patrick Kerrigan and Brian Bushnell, in addition to electing and appointing several internal board positions. “We’re basically a new board here,” said Dave Molitor, the previous board president, now the vice president after Tuesday’s meeting. Molitor said none of the current board members have served the district longer than two years. Kelly was nominated for the role of president by Mike Aurelio. She, in turn, nominated Dave Molitor for the presidency but unanimously was elected to the position herself. “It’s very humbling that they picked me,” Kelly said after the meeting drew to a close.
Kelly then nominated Molitor for the vice presidency. Board member Al Malley nominated Deitemyer and then Aurelio for the position as well. Both declined the nomination, leaving Molitor to receive the role by default. Patrick Kerrigan was elected secretary as the sole nominee. Cindy Kelly also was elected board spokesperson by acclimation. District Business Manager Barbara Germany was elected board treasurer. Each new board member was assigned a designated mentor in the form of a more experienced member of the board. Aurelio will mentor Deitemyer, Malley will mentor Kerrigan and Molitor will mentor Bushnell. The board determined that its meetings will be at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. “I think that we’re all looking forward to this next year,” Kelly said. “We have a really good mixture right now.”

LEMONT – A female Lemont middle school student has been charged with disorderly conduct after admitting Tuesday to writing the bomb threat that caused unrest among parents, school administrators and law enforcement in the Lemont area. “Incidents like this are disturbing,” said Lemont Police Chief Kevin Shaughnessy. “They traumatize children. They create a fear in the minds of parents.” The girl is being charged as a juvenile, and her case will be handled within the Cook County juvenile justice system, Shaughnessy said. Repercussions could range from station adjustment, which entails documenting the incident locally and possible community
service, to time in a juvenile detention center. District 113A Superintendent Susan Birkenmaier said the bomb threat is classified as a level three disciplinary infraction, the consequences of which could include a 10-day suspension, expulsion hearing or restitution of property, according to the district’s student handbook. The threat, which parents were notified about on Sunday, was written on an exterior wall at Oakwood School and stated that “Oakwood will be bombed on 5/7/13.” Buildings and grounds at Oakwood and River Forest schools were searched by the Cook County Sheriff’s K-9 unit, Lemont Police Department and school district staff, but no evidence of a bomb was discovered. Lately, I’m hearing some incorrect grammar in writing and talking. They say, “me and my friend.” It’s supposed to be, “my friend and me.” And a lot of people are saying, “I want to thank so-and-so.” And then at the end, they don’t say, “thank you.” Some people do. They say, “I want to apologize.” That’s not an apology. They need to say, “I apologize.”
It is most gratifying that newly elected state Sen. Jim Oberweis has focused his efforts on important, dynamic issues, such as raising the speed limit in Illinois and ousting GOP Chairman Pat Brady for his views on gay marriage. We may as well impeach Mark Kirk for his views, while we’re at it. We need more representatives like Oberweis, who tackle our pressing, difficult problems, such as these, and do not waste their efforts on frivolous issues, such as high unemployment and unmanageable, growing deficits. Who voted for this guy, anyway?
It’s sad We all watched the news on Boston. The 19-year-old who was captured, he became a citizen, but he is not a citizen of this country. My question is, anybody can become a citizen here? Aren’t they checked out before? It’s sad. My daughter, for two days, didn’t even want to go anywhere.
Too many guns I would like to express my opinion of the greediness and selfishness of the NRA and the gun dealers who go along with selling guns to anybody who wants them. And every day when I turn on the TV, all I hear about is people getting killed with guns. It’s terrible that they are making money and not considering the other things that happen when people have those guns. Why can’t our Congress do something about it?

Lee and Buschman reasoned the property was too small to effectively function as a parking lot. St. Patrick’s appealed the commission’s decision to the Village Board. Because board approval was granted, it may proceed with purchasing the property and already has begun negotiating with the owner.
The church is free to tear down the house, but is does not yet have permission from the village to build a parking lot, said Jim Brown, director of planning and economic development in Lemont. The village does not allow institutions to build accessory lots outside their property, Brown said. Prompted by multiple parking discussions with local churches, the board will vote Monday on a zoning ordinance amendment to allow institutions to apply for special-use parking lot permits. LEMONT – Advocates of area history are at odds with a local church that has expressed interest in demolishing a 19th Century home in historic Lemont to construct a parking lot. The Lemont Village Board voted April 22 to allow St. Patrick Church to demolish the house at 217 Cass St. Trustees Ron Stapleton and Jeanette Virgilio voted against the motion, while all other members of the board voted in favor. “I would rather see it re-
main a house,” said Richard Lee, vice president of the Lemont Area Historical Society. Built in 1885, the structure long served as the home of the Wends family, who moved to the village in the 1930s and worked as tavern proprietors. Because the house is in Lemont’s historic district, St. Patrick was required to obtain a certificate of appropriateness from the Lemont Historic Preservation Commission before moving forward with the demolition. The church applied in January and was denied the COA with a 6-0 vote the next month.

LEMONT – History will come to life this weekend at the Lemont Area Historical Society’s fifth annual Civil War Picnic. “We’d like for the Lemont community to learn more about our history,” said Susan Donahue, secretary and museum coordinator for the historical society. The picnic will be Friday at the Lemont Museum, which was used as a recruiting station for the Union Army during the Civil War. Historical reenactors Helen Milam and Toni Blaeser, both of Lockport, will attend the picnic in period dress. Milam will play a war nurse and will speak about how she was affected by the horrors of slavery. Blaeser will portray a 19th Century feminist and discuss her fight to win the vote for women. The historical society’s baseball team, the Lemont
Quarrymen, also will make an appearance in their 1850s uniforms. A video will be shown of the dedication of the Lemont Civil War Memorial in honor of the fifth anniversary of the memorial’s erection. On the corner of Main Street and New Avenue in Legion Park, the memorial honors the more than 250 Lemont residents who volunteered to serve in the Civil War. “We had a huge number of local people that volunteered,” said historical society Vice President Richard Lee. “Many of them died or were wounded.” The memorial in Lemont stands in the same place where soldiers from the village shipped out to war and where Abraham Lincoln’s funeral train traveled through town. The picnic begins at 6:30 p.m. A catered meal will be served. Cost to attend is $7 for adults and $3 for children.

Get your summer on at the Lemont Park District The smell of fresh-cut grass, a clear blue sky and bright, shining sun ... summer is definitely on its way, and the Lemont Park District is ready. LPD is kicking off the summer with plenty of fun beginning in June with Pack the Park at Covington North. This free event will feature cool games, free hot dogs and the movie “Grease.” July’s Pack the Park will be at Northview with a magician and a variety family show. Back by popular demand is the “Ravinia-like” Sunset Soiree at Centennial Park brought to you by Tap House Grill. COMMUNITY Now a three-part series, Sunset SoiVOICE ree outdoor summer concerts showcase premiere local bands and musicians. Lauren It wouldn’t be summer without Hanson Lemont Park District’s Independence Day Extravanganza. Maybe it’s the great music or perhaps it’s the fantastic kid’s games, but people come from all over to experience this fantastic day. This year, Chicago’s premiere band “Centerfold” will perform; they rocked the Chicago Rock & Roll Half Marathon this past year, so it should be a great show. Also on tap are the bean bag and three-on-three basketball tournaments, local restaurant vendors and the Foundation Beer Garden. In partnership with the village of Lemont and the township, the fireworks show is a more-than-perfect ending to a perfect day. In the morning runners from all over will take to the streets of Lemont for the 36th annual Freedom Run 5K and 10K races (participants can register online at Active.com). In addition to coordinating special events, I am also the teen, youth, cultural arts, adults and senior program supervisor. There are a lot of cool teen trips this summer including paintballing to Millennium Park to the Indiana Dunes to an all-day kayaking trip. Adults, we have a great Kitaro cooking class where you will learn about sushi, get to make it and eat your own creation. Seniors are encouraged to join me for a dinner once a month with the Soup R Supper Club or cool off on a Friday afternoon with a movie at the park district. There is definitely something for all ages. At the Lemont Park District, we like to “Get Our Summer On,” which you can see on the bright tie-dye shirts you’ll seen worn by our staff member during the summer months. Now you can be apart of those shirts too. If you sign up for a CORE membership in May, you will pay no enrollment fee, and the first 50 new members will get a “Get Your Summer On” tie-dye shirt. Whenever you’re at the park district or a special event, feel free to say hello. I am always happy to answer any questions about special events and programming. OBITUARIES LONITA A. 'NITA' WEBER Lonita A. "Nita" Weber, a life-long resident of Lemont, passed away May 7, 2013, at Lemont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, following a courageous battle with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. She was born on July 15, 1943, to John F. and Velma A. Weber, who preceded her in death. Nita is survived by three brothers, Donald E. (Mary Jo), Ronald A. (Janet) and Robert(Patricia), four nieces, Kimberly Weber, Tracy (Richard) Plesek, Diane (Kirk) Stallings and Lisa (Bruce)Pap, and a nephew,Jason Weber. She is also survived by many grandnieces and grandnephews. Preceded in death by her paternal and maternal grandparents, along with many aunts, uncles and cousins. Nita was a graduate of Lemont High School, and was well known for her love ofbowling. She retired in 2010, having been employed by the security firm that worked for Citgo Refinery. In recent years, she became a serious sports fan of the Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bears. 3 severely injured in crash on Lemont Road By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Three people were hospitalized after sustaining serious injuries in a T-bone car crash May 3 in unincorporated Lemont, according to Lemont Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Matt Peksa. The incident occurred about 7:30 p.m. on Lemont Road, south of 97th Street, when a car pulling out of a driveway was hit by an oncoming car.
First-responders took 15 minutes to extricate the driver of the car that was hit. The vehicle had a 1-foot indentation on the driver’s side, due to the impact of the oncoming car, Peksa said. Both vehicles were severely damaged. The driver of the impacted car was transported to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital. The passenger from that vehicle and the driver of the oncoming car were transported to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, Peksa said.

Golden Basket helps patrons rise and shine WESTMONT – Putting a bright exclamation mark on breakfast and lunch is Golden Basket in Westmont. It’s easy to understand the buzz about the eatery once you venture inside. Early one recent Sunday afternoon, my dining companion and I were warmly greeted and led to a comfortable booth in the sun-drenched room ringed by windows creating an airy effect. The space is attractive with a crisp gray and cream color scheme, wood floor, and tables and booths generously spaced for ease of conversation, even in a packed room. Check the center column where specials are posted. I picked the omelet of the day, featuring bacon, sundried tomatoes, Swiss cheese and grilled onion. The interplay of ingredients was nicely balanced inside the expertly prepared eggs – a true test for breakfast fans. Every bite was packed with flavorful tidbits. Two sides are included with the omelet. One selection offers a choice of every type of toast, even raisin bread, which
my dining companion enjoyed. I opted instead for a fluffy pancake that arrived with a light sprinkling of powdered sugar and a generous carafe of hot syrup for a decadent treat. Choices for the second side dish range from potatoes to fresh fruit, which looked delicious at a neighboring table, including pineapple and bananas in the mix. Our server recommended the “homemade potatoes,” which are cubed. Happily, nothing is overly salted. As good as they were, I have to confess I couldn’t resist swapping the house potatoes for my dining companion’s delicious hash browns that avoided the common pitfall of oiliness and instead popped with fresh flavor. They were nestled in a skillet featuring bite-size skirt steak with pepper and onions, topped with cheddar cheese and two eggs over easy. “This is tasty and just the right size,” said my companion, who had added a dollop of the subtle Cholula Hot Sauce for some extra kick.

Makeover reimagines Drury Lane in time for Mother’s Day By RENEE TOMELL rtomell@shawmedia.com Raising the curtain is usually commonplace at Drury Lane, when it comes to theatrical productions like the current run of “Oliver!” but last week it meant the unveiling of a whole new look and feel to the lobby, ballrooms and the more intimate settings for special occasions in Oakbrook Terrace. Kyle DeSantis, president of Drury Lane, announced the completion of the first phase of renovations, noting the second will be done by mid-2014, which will encompass the restaurant and theater bar. A new, more extensive menu already has been put in place for theater patrons and people booking corporate gatherings,
weddings and other events. Designer Shannon Leoni created a nuanced, neutral color palette for each space. It marks a big change from the expansive lobby’s original dominant red to the new tones of chocolate brown, cream, coral and pale blue set off by four, 12-foot Swarovski crystal chandeliers and coral marble accents. The redone cocktail lounge has a fresh menu, including a seasonal cocktail list and light fare such as bruschetta, Asian beef rolls, snow crab and shrimp cocktail, and grilled chicken panini. Charming visual escapes are provided by the reinvisioned French and English rooms. Silver-leaf Chinoiserie wallpaper, Louis XVI-inspired dining chairs, a cream-col-
ored coffered ceiling, new wall sconces and four new crystal chandeliers are highlights of The French Room renovation. The English Room has a warmly clubby atmosphere, with lacquered brown walls and plush banquettes. On the walls hangs a creative mix of Old World-style paintings in ornate frames paired with fine art photographic portraits of Hollywood icons. The visuals pop in this room. Assistant Manager Jordyn DiOrio says the space has a “jazz club vibe,” and points out the smiling countenance of Drury Lane founder Tony DeSantis, whose caricature hangs over the fireplace. Junior throws first complete game after knee surgery as Indians seize control of league
By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com OAK FOREST – Having pitched just over eight innings this spring due to knee surgery that delayed his start to the season, Charlie Wright felt great heading into his outing Tuesday. That turned out to be bad news for Oak Forest. Scattering seven hits in a complete-game performance, the 5-foot-9 left-hander struck out 10 in leading Lemont to a 7-1 victory over the Bengals. “My mentality was to just throw strikes and get ahead,” said Wright, a junior. “And I was able to throw my curveball for a strike which doesn’t always happen.” Wright was making just his second start of the season. Lemont coach Brian Storako was more than pleased with his pitcher’s effort. “That’s what we talk about, throwing strikes from the start,” he said. “He did that. He established his breaking ball and threw two pitches for strikes. And we made plays behind him when we needed to. I couldn’t ask for a better start.” The win, coupled with Monday’s 11-4 decision over Oak Forest, gave Lemont full control of the South Suburban Blue conference heading into Wednesday’s matchup against Evergreen Park. The Indians will then finish their suspended game with Reavis on Friday – the game was tied after 11 innings – before wrapping up league play next week with two contests against Hillcrest and one against Argo. sweep of Oak Forest. “This was a big, big momentum boost going into the rest of the season, especially for the playoffs,” Wright said. “Oak Forest is in our regional. It’s a big rivalry all-around in all of the sports so it’s good to come here and a get a win. It’s put us in a spot where we control our own destiny. We are in a good spot.” Offensively, Mike Pa -
pierski produced a pair of RBI doubles as the visitors jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in the third innings. Lemont added three runs in the seventh on a two-run single by Jake Terrazas and an RBI double by Billy Hayes. “That’s been our M.O. for the season,” Storako said. “We try to get out early. The trouble we’ve had is in the middle innings, we seem to
get a little lull in there.” On Monday, Lemont defeated Oak Forest, 11-4, as the Indians scored 10 runs in the first three innings. Mike Wisz was 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBIs with Papierski adding three hits. Jake Latz was the beneficiary of that run support. He struck out nine in six innings of work.

sschmid@shawmedia.com LEMONT – From the moment she stepped onto a soccer field at the age of 4, Kim Jerantowski took a liking to distributing the ball to teammates. Years later, as a junior at Lemont, nothing much changed for the Indians’ midfielder, who is equally adept at finding the back of the net. “It’s always a good feeling when you score a goal,” said Jerantowski, who also is the point guard on the Indians basketball team. “But assisting on a goal is as good if not better. Even when I was little, I would always pass to people. I like to share I guess.” A forward at the very beginning of her career, Jerantowski eventually moved to the center midfield position where she now roams as one of the top players in the area. In her third year on the varsity team, she has totaled 15 goals to go along with 13 assists after scoring 23 goals in 2012. “I love being able to control the tempo of the game and being able to play offense and defense while being a leader on the field,” said Jerantowski, who began playing traveling soccer in the fourth grade with the Lemont Legacy before moving on to the Chicago Blast and Windy City Pride. Her skill set caught the eye of many

Division I colleges before Jerantowski ultimately chose Northwestern in mid-December. Purdue, Valparaiso, Wisconsin, Iowa and UNC Charlotte also had shown interest. “They saw me at a tournament in September,” Jerantowski said. “We stayed connected and I visited a couple of times and really liked it. “Northwestern is great academically and I didn’t want to be too far from my family. Also a goal was to play in the Big Ten. I really like the high level it has. All of the schools are well known and I think I will get a good experience out of it.” As for the season at hand, Lemont is in the midst of a successful 2013 campaign despite having only three seniors on their roster. “We still have to work on some of the little things,” Jerantowski said. “And we are still a little inconsistent, but we are doing 10 times better than I thought we would just based on our inexperience.”

The Indians, who improved to 15-2 in the league, had entered play tied for first with Tinley Park and Oak Forest. Lemont will meet Oak Forest on May 16 in its conference finale.

Cody Caballero School: Lemont baseball Class: Senior Position: Pitcher Impact: This senior has been a true revelation for the Indians this spring. Relying on pinpoint control, Caballero owned a 5-1 record entering this week with a 1.09 ERA in 32 innings of work. He had allowed only 22 hits and four walks while striking out 27.

School: Lemont softball Class: Freshman Position: Second base Impact: A call-up to the varsity basketball team midway through the winter, this freshman has been with the Indians’ varsity softball squad from the get-go this spring. Leading the way was Jorie Dybcio, who captured the 1,600-meter race title with a time of 5:30.0. She bested teammate Taylor Campos by 10 seconds. Claire Gagen emerged victorious in the 3,200, covering the distance in 11:59, which was more than a minute ahead of her closest competition. Lynn Stanwyck added a first-place finish in the pole vault after clearing 9 feet with teammate Jaque Desmond coming in second.
Victoria Salazar was the runner-up in the 800 with a clocking of 2:27.5 while Monique Devitt came in second in the discus and third in the shot put. Emma O’Leary added a second-place showing in the high jump. Also contributing points were Gabby Voltarel (third in the 3,200) and Katelyn Koehler (fifth in the 400), The 4 x 800 relay won in a time of 10:12.
