Recently, there has been discussion about modernizing Hinsdale and replacing vintage homes. Williams said a certain amount of renewal in any community is a good thing, but to a point.

History enthusiast Sandra Williams is the author of “Hinsdale,” which through pictures and facts gives readers the history of the Chicago suburb. Proceeds from the book will be given to the Hinsdale Historical Society. “Where it gets sticky is when it touches significant homes, important homes, or what older Hinsdaleans might think are landmark homes,” she said. “When those come down, it is much more difficult. You really don’t want to lose all your tangible history and you almost see that happening

with the number of houses Hinsdale has lost.” As Williams outlines in her book, the town of Hinsdale itself may have modernized, but its roots are still intact. Hinsdale prides itself on reflecting the well-being of its residents with tree-shaded streets, well-maintained homes and a historic down-

town, she said, but it’s the neighborly feel that Williams loves the most. “People still know one another,” she said. “Perhaps not as well as they used to ... but it’s a very friendly, welcoming community that has this great historic atmosphere largely because of the downtown.”

Hinsdale Central alum breaks into podcasts By DAVID HEITZ dheitz@shawmedia.com CLARENDON HILLS — Andy Derer has wanted to be a radio host ever since he was in grade school, when he would dream up interviews with his favorite music stars and other celebrities. Now, the 29-year-old Hinsdale Central High School alum is using Internet radio to make those dreams come true with a podcast that’s grown in popularity over the past two years. Derer, a musician and music fan originally from Clarendon Hills, hosts “The Andy Derer Show,” a weekly Internet radio podcast heard by many across the country that focuses on music and entertainment. “I can do whatever I want,” said Derer, who now lives in Westmont. “And from a listener perspective, it is much more user-friendly than radio is, as listeners can hear the show anytime they want, and can go back and listen

to their favorite parts. And broadcasts can run as long as I want. Sometimes the shows are 45 minutes — other times they may be over two hours long.” It’s become Derer’s fulltime job. He operates the show out of his Westmont home. “I spend the entire week sending out dozens of emails to contacts and through social media, looking for people to appear on the show,” Derer said. “... It definitely is a fulltime job.” Derer does the show weekly from his home using a computer, microphones, headphones, web cameras and other gadgets, including an old-school four-track recorder that adds a “vintage analog” sound to the show, he said. It can take him up to three hours just to edit and upload each show to his website. Interviewees Derer has nailed down over the last few years — he’s done more than 80 episodes — include bits with Steven Drozd, a member of the band The Flaming Lips;

Cris Kirkwood, bass player for the band The Meat Puppets; MTV video disc jockey Matt Pinfield; and filmmaker David Markey, known for directing “1991: The Year Punk Broke,” a documentary about the Seattle grunge music scene of the early 1990s. While attending Hinsdale Central, Derer was a member of the school’s radio station, where he got his start in broadcasting. He also was a musician, starting his first garage band in 1995. Derer started his own record label called New Money after graduating high school in 2002. After high school, he attended College of DuPage and Columbia College in Chicago, where he eventually realized the traditional network radio disc jockey may not be in the cards for him. “I was basically told that radio was a dying art form, that the industry is in decline,” Derer said. “I started looking at other things not related to the industry and

had no idea what I was going to do.” Derer recalled being disappointed for a period of time, until one day while working at a restaurant he caught word that his radio idol, Adam Carolla, was fired from mainstream radio and immediately went to podcasting. “That was my big inspiration to try this out, and it has taken me some time, but I’m really happy where I am at now,” Derer said. By reading data from his website, he said it’s easy to track his audience — from size, demographics, age and location. He even has listeners in Europe and Asia. Local businesses, such as Uncle Bub’s BBQ and 2nd Hand Mall, have stepped up to help with sponsorships, Derer said. One of Derer’s fans is Kevin Matthews, a former Chicago radio personality who spent more than 25 years on the radio waves. Matthews also has found himself on podcasts — he hosts a podcast on

the Steve Dahl Network, an Internet radio network started by Dahl, another longtime veteran of Chicago radio. “As a podcaster, I can say whatever I want. There are no rules, no consultants and no bosses,” Matthews said. “It is the way radio once was, and I love it.” Derer credits Matthews for helping him out with the show. The two met after Derer interviewed Matthews’ son, a California musician. Derer also serves as a music critic frequently on Matthews’ show. “Andy is a real good person, and he is someone who loves what he is doing,” Matthews said. Derer’s goal is to keep working to improve his show while continuing to expand his music collection and perform his own music, as well. “Eventually, I’d like to be able to do the show more than once a week, maybe two or three times a week,” he added. “My goal is to just keep building up what I have.”

Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale end consolidation talks HINSDALE — The villages of Clarendon Hills and Hinsdale recently reached an impasse in police department consolidation discussions and have agreed to end current efforts to consolidate. The two villages began to explore consolidated police services with the goal of reducing operating costs without affecting services. The two communities have been exploring consolidated police services in earnest for nearly two years, according to a news release from the Village of Hinsdale, including the development and proposal of legislation to allow municipalities to merge police departments via intergovernmental agreement. The consolidation was estimated to bring annual savings of $700,000 to $800,000 between the two municipalities. Over the last several months, the villages worked with the Fraternal Order of Police to discuss potential wages and benefits of the consolidated department. Social security

benefits received by Clarendon Hills police officers, but not Hinsdale officers, were identified as a potential roadblock. The villages and unions continued discussions on other issues while also working with the Social Security Administration to identify alternatives. In the end, the lack of a mutually agreeable solution on the social security problem proved to be insurmountable, according to the news release. Legal costs associated with the consolidation discussion were paid for with a grant from the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority. Both communities remain committed to working together in other ways to provide services to residents in a cost-effective manner, according to the release.

So far, District 53 residents would pay $187 more in property taxes a year for a home valued at $500,000, as outlined in Hanzlik’s proposal, to pay for the new building. Moy said the positives a new school would bring would outweigh paying a few hundred extra dollars in taxes. “It will improve our image, it will improve our revenues, it will improve our property value and all other good things will come,” he said. One resident in attendance asked the candidates

for a “yes” or “no” answer as to whether or not they agreed with the construction of a new school. Cuevas, Young and Adler said they would support what residents decided in April, Baar and Moy said “yes” and Denton said “no.” Residents will now vote April 9 on the referenda. The first referendum question asks residents to approve financing a $15 million bond issue and the second asks to approve the sale of the Sports Core land. If each passes, the final decision will go to the zoning board and village trustees for approval.

OAK BROOK — Six Oak Brook village trustee candidates took part in a roundtable discussion last week to give opinions and field audience questions in regards to building a new school in Oak Brook on the Sports Core property. The candidates included Phil Cuevas, John Baar, William Denton, Steve Young, Don Adler and Mark Moy. Representing District 53 in the proposal was School Board President Alan Hanzlik, who said there were several options the school board looked at before arriving at its decision to ask voters for a new school, but cost and available property were not adding up. “Remodeling an existing building would cost us $48.7 million, while the cost to build a new school would be $47.2 million,” Hanzlik said. The proposal now is to get rid of the Butler and Brook Forest schools and design a

new kindergarten through eighth grade school on 8.5 acres of land. This comes after a life safety report revealed several maintenance and structural issues with the two existing schools. Denton said he supported the idea of having one school, but questioned Hanzlik on the “rush” to build a new school. “I absolutely endorse one school for the village, but the timing is out of whack,” Denton said. “There’s too much fluidness in the plan and it’s too early.” Hanzlik said the School Board is hoping to build soon because of interest rates — if

The victim reported a man in his 30s entered her home under the ruse of checking the property line because he was working at the vacant home next door, which was flooding. The suspect then took several phone calls while in the home and spoke “in a different language,” police said. Afterward,

he told the victim he would be back with heavy equipment to fix a cracked pipe. The suspect had the victim run the water and asked her to come outside. The victim reported nothing missing from the residence. The second incident was reported Feb. 23. About 1:40 p.m., a man in his 40s said he bought something from the victim’s neighbor and needed to get in contact with him. The suspect then distracted the victim by telling them to

look out the kitchen window at the roof of the house behind them, police said. The victim also said the suspect had a two-way radio that kept “beeping.” The victim then told the suspect to leave. The suspect was seen getting in the passenger side of a light blue or gray mini-van, which was parked in the driveway, and left at a high rate of speed, according to police reports. Woman rescued from house fire in Hinsdale HINSDALE — A woman was rescued last week from a house fire in Hinsdale. About 3:51 a.m. Feb. 28, a resident called to report his house at 942 South Bruner St. was on fire. Multiple departments battled the blaze, and firefighters located a woman who was unresponsive in the living room, bringing her outside. She was revived and taken to Adventist Hinsdale Hospital,

where her son also was treated for smoke inhalation. Her condition was unknown. The cause of this fire is still under investigation, however, it appears to be accidental and not suspicious in nature, fire officials said. An damage estimate was not known.

Oak Brook PD partners with Pinstripes OAK BROOK — The Oak Brook Police Department kicked off its 2013 fundraising campaign for Special Olympics of Illinois by hosting a Candlelight Bowl Feb. 9. Partnering with Pinstripes of Oak Brook, village employees, their friends and family gathered for a night of bowling, food, raffles and auctions. The Oak Brook Police Department raised about $1,400, a step toward the department’s goal of $15,000. Amore abounds in this year’s Big Read Whether it be the Super Bowl or the season finale of “Downton Abbey,” it’s fun to come in to work on Monday and have a shared viewing experience to talk about. Communitywide reading programs provide the same kind of thing but by reading the same book. You notice a neighbor reading a copy of the book on the train or the treadmill and you have an instant conversation starter. “Oh, I just finished that book — it made me so hungry, I ate pasta every night for a week!” Hinsdale Public Library is one of 10 area libraries (including Clarendon Hills, Downers Grove, Indian Prairie, La Grange, La Grange Park, Lisle, Thomas Ford, Westmont and Woodridge) that come together once a year to connect their communities through literature. The Big Read encourages patrons at all libraries to read the same book with the goal of promoting reading, sparking discussion and building community. This year’s selection is “The Shoemaker’s Wife” by Adriana Trigiani. Inspired by her own family history, Adriana Trigiani creates the unforgettable characters of Ciro and Enza to tell the saga of two star-crossed lovers whose journeys take them from the mountains in Italy to their new home in America. WHEATON — Nearly every year in the NCAA basketball tournament, a No. 12 seed seems to upset a No. 5 seed. That scenario played out at the high school level Feb. 28 as No. 12 Geneva team topped No. 5 Hinsdale Central 55-49 in a boys basketball semifinal game of the Class 4A Wheaton Warrenville South regional. The Red Devils (18-7) came into the contest winners in 12 of their previous 13 games, but the Vikings (21-8) played to near perfection, and Central didn’t have an answer. “It seemed like every time I thought we were going to have a run to get ahead, they seemed to hit a clutch three,” Central coach Nick Latorre said. When Central went ahead 11-9 on Matt Rafferty’s layup with 33.6 seconds left in the first quarter, Geneva’s Pace Temple knocked down a three-pointer 15 seconds later to put the Vikings up 12-11 after one. When three Alec Hutcherson free throws followed by a Chase Hamilton bucket put the Red Devils ahead 33-30, Nate Navigato drained a trey 19 seconds after Hamilton’s bucket to knot the score. Geneva’s Chris Perrilli hit a three-pointer with a minute left in the third to make it 36-36 heading into the fourth quarter. And when Hamilton hit a mid-range jumper for a 44-43 Central lead with four minutes to play, Mike Trimble hit both ends of a one-and-one 33 seconds later to put the Vikings up for good. “We just didn’t get stops when we needed to and they made key shots when they needed to,” Latorre said. “I

thought that was the difference in the game — they’re knack for knocking down shots at the right time.” The Red Devils saw Rafferty (15 points), Hamilton (14) and Brian Owens (11) score in double figures, and Hutcherson added six points. The season didn’t end the way they wanted, but the Red Devils still had plenty to be proud of. Sitting at 6-5 at the end of 2012, they won 12 in a row to start 2013. They went 11-1 and won the West Suburban Silver title for the first time since 2000. “We just talked about the terrific season we had, the awesome kids that we had and the awesome effort they put forth all season and all summer,” Latorre said after the game. “They’ve accomplished a ton.” A large group of seniors, including starters Owens, Jared Eck, Hutcherson and Rigas Pappas, will be missed, but they left a solid blueprint for the younger players to follow. “Our senior group was special,” Latorre said. “I think the overall focus of our program is built on hard work, discipline and unselfishness, and I think those are the three things they have brought every day in my three years here. I think that’s definitely what they got across to those younger guys.”

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com HINSDALE — Hinsdale Central girls soccer fans curious about the 2013 Red Devils can feel free to whip out their 2012 rosters. They are virtually the same, which has head coach Michael Smith excited for this season. “We have a strong senior group that has been on varsity since they were sophomores, so that leadership, experience and skill should allow us to be successful,” Smith said. “We also have a core group of juniors that have been varsity players since they were freshmen, so we have a good group of juniors and seniors leading the way and guiding the underclasses.” With such a large group of returning players, the Red Devils hope to compete for the West Suburban Silver conference title before embarking on a deep playoff run. But for now, the primary goal is to set themselves up for success later on. “Right now, our focus is on us and what we need to do now,” Smith said. “I’ve made clear to all the girls that it’s a process. It’s a beginning, a middle and an end. Last year was a bit frustrating but we finished well and we want to replicate that with the understanding we have to buy in at the beginning.” Not only does Central have a

large group of experienced returning players, but it also has a nice balance among those returners. “Our midfielders and wingers are certainly solid, but that’s not to say our back line isn’t,” Smith said. “We also have a junior keeper who’s started since she was a freshman. They’re all key components, top to bottom. I’m excited. The assistant coaches and I look at this team and there’s a lot of depth. We have 18 varsity field players and if we had a game today, all 18 would play.”

Big numbers, talent return for Hornets By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DARIEN —One thing is for sure as the Hornets get set for the 2013 season — senior day is going to take a bit longer. Last season, South had just one senior on the team, defender Carolanne Pilch. The Hornets will miss her leadership off the field and her talent on it, but with so much talent returning they are excited for the potential this season. “Pretty much everyone from last year is back,” head coach

Pat Wolf said. “The girls are all excited. We have a quality group of girls coming back.” Included are a slew of seniors who have been with the varsity team since they were freshmen, and some juniors who saw varsity action last spring. In addition to being a team leader, Pilch was the anchor of the defense. Losing her will be mitigated by the return of goalkeeper Vanessa Niestrom. Defenders Colleen McPherson and Brenda Magueri also return, and Wolf said Magueri

could also slide forward to figure into the attack. Julie Vezzani and Jessica Mutters, who returns to the Hornets after concentrating on club soccer for two years, figure to anchor the attack. The only problem so far is figuring out exactly how all the pieces will fit together. “We’ve only been outside (for practice) one day so far, and we didn’t even touch the ball that one day,” Wolf said. “Our practices inside have been pretty good for as much as you can do inside, but it’s hard to put peo-

ple in specific places. Once we’re outside a bit more we’ll be able to see a bit more.” Wolf said he also has a solid group of freshmen at his disposal, but they might spend most of their time on the lower levels this season. “We might bring some kids up with us, but because we have a core group I’d like to see what that group can do first and then maybe bring the freshmen up if need be,” Wolf said. “It’s nice to know they are there in case someone gets hurt or something.”

er losses were single-digit defeats, another indication of the Hornets’ competitiveness in a what was a bit of a rocky season in terms of record. While this season didn’t provide too many highlights, things could be different next winter. “Because of injury or illnesses, a few times we started a lineup with four juniors and a freshman, and we were really competitive,” Mitchell said. “We played a ton of juniors and

we really were in every ball game.” Barrett Benson, a 6-foot-8 freshman center this season, improved over the course of the season and finished strong with double-doubles in four of South’s final six games. Several returning juniors, including Marcel Phillips, Larry Motuzis and Antanas Riskus, are expected to return along with Benson. The Hornets should also have plenty of help next season from the lower levels. The sophomore team finished 1510 but went 9-3 and finished second in the West Suburban Gold. The Freshman A and B teams combined to go 29-18. “We have a good core coming back and we were right there in a lot of games this season,” Mitchell said. “I’m excited for the future of our program.”

DARIEN — In sports, a record can tell a lot about a team’s success and overall results, but it doesn’t always tell the whole story. That was the case this season for Hinsdale South’s boys basketball team. The Hornets ended their season with a 7-19 mark that was in no way indicative of the effort they put forth this season. “I’m really proud of the kids,” head coach Tanner Mitchell said after a 64-53 regional quarterfinal loss to Oswego East Feb. 25. “The kids played hard and went out strong.” This season, the Hornets suffered five defeats by three points or less, and two of those were buzzer-beaters. Pillars and the Chevy 348 Q: What exactly are the pillars that so many car articles mention, such as in A-pillar, B-pillar and so on. I know this is probably an elementary question, but to a retired older gal like myself, I always wonder. Amy L., Illinois. A: No problem, as every question is a good one. The pillars mentioned in these articles refer to the pieces of steel that attach a roof to the car. The A-pillar is the windshield of the car’s support system. It is the only pillar that is a must on every car built that has a windshield. The B-pillar is the piece of metal that separates the middle of that car’s front and rear doors and acts as support behind the first set of side windows. A four-door sedan or a coupe will have a B-pillar. Now, if you buy a hardtop, there is no B-pillar. C-pillars are the back of the fixed top’s attachment to the body on sedans and coupes. If you have a hardtop where when the windows are all down, there is no pillar, the C-pillar is still called a C-pillar. A final D-pillar is common in station wagons and SUV/crossovers, and follow the C-pillars to the rear as the final structural support from the roof to the body. into a 427 later. Thanks, Ron P., Pennsylvania. A: Yes, Chevy’s 348 engine came to life in 1958 as a big-block powerplant for heavy duty trucks and Chevrolet automobiles, too. Called the “W-head”

Turbo-Thrust 348, it came with everything from a two barrel carb to four barrel to three-twos. This engine then grew into the famous “she’s real fine my 409” high performance engine that tore up the drag strips from 1961 to 1963. The 409 was available through 1965, when it was replaced by the all-new 396 Mark IV “mystery motor” design that debuted at the Daytona 500 in 1963 as a 427. As for a “W-head” 427, you are correct that one

was produced, that being the 427 “W-head” built for drag racers only in 1963. It came with a special twopiece aluminum manifold and put out a conservative 430 horsepower under the option code Z11. Anyone could have walked into a Chevy dealer in 1963 and bought one, but few knew of the Z11 code other than the drag teams. From 1965 on, however, the new big block “mystery motor” replaced the “Wheads,” and came in sizes 366, 396, 402, 427 and 454 through the early

1970s. The 366 was a truck engine, while the others powered the famous Chevelles, Novas, Corvettes and full-size Impalas. You can still buy a big block “mystery style” crate motor from Chevy all the way up to 572 inches. The shamrock is the symbol of Ireland. Normally, a shamrock has three leaves, which represents the Trinity, a Christian belief that God is made of three people: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. A four-leaf clover is special, however: It is considered to be very lucky to find. Keep an eye out!

These mythical creatures are always getting into trouble. The fairy-like beings look like very tiny old men, and are known for their tricks and being unfriendly. Legend says that leprechauns are always chasing the gold at the end of the rainbow. If you can find the end of the rainbow (we’re guessing you can’t …), you might find a leprechaun there, too.

Wearing green Green is a color that is heavily associated with the Emerald Isle. Ireland is a vibrant shade of green, and there is green in the Irish flag. Shamrocks are green, and leprechauns always wear the color. On St. Patrick’s Day, the tradition is to wear green, whether you’re Irish or not. Anyone who doesn’t wear green gets pinched!

The blarney stone The blarney stone is a famous rock that is set into a wall at Blarney Castle in Ireland. Legend has it that if you kiss the blarney stone, you will be given the gift of eloquence. No one really knows where the blarney stone came from, or how it gained its power, or whether it really turns the kisser into a silver-tongued speaker. But that hasn’t stopped millions of visitors from leaning over backward to give it a smooch.
