The Cell C Sharks are currently placed in the top six of the inaugural URC following their bonus-point win against the Scarlets last weekend. Today they welcome the Italian outfit, Zebre Parma, to Hollywoodbets Kings Park for a historic encounter today that could see the Durban-based outfit consolidate their standing on the table… Their full haul of championship points last Friday night, courtesy of a hard-fought 37-20 home win against the Scarlets from Llanelli, Wales, saw Sean Everitt’s charges climb from eighth to sixth on the 2022 United Rugby Championship standings. The home side certainly didn’t have it all their own way, with the visitors leading 13-6 a quarter of an hour into the second half. That, however, was when flamboyant fullback Aphelele Fassi latched onto a deceptive little stab kick by scrumhalf Jaden Hendrikse to spark a second-half resurgence that yielded the all-important bonus-point try to secure a critical home win. Although not a flawless team display by the Cell C Sharks, Everitt dubbed Fassi’s 10 CELL C SHARKS VS ZEBRE RUGBY

performance, which bagged the rangy fullback the Man-of-the-Match spoils for the second game on the trot, as “world class”… “He's playing great rugby at the moment,” the coach observed. “And, he did turn the game on its head when Jaden put that little kick through for him.” Surprisingly, the Welsh visitors appeared to be coping better with the humid and sticky conditions in Durban initially, and after they had twice come close to scoring tries early on, Aaron Shingler eventually put them in the lead when he crossed the goal-line six minutes into the second spell. “The conditions were difficult, and I thought that Scarlets probably handled them better than us," Everitt agreed.

“They executed their kicking plan better than us. Our kick accuracy wasn't good, and it put us under pressure, particularly in the first 20 minutes. "When we kicked better in the second half, we made it easier for ourselves. That's something to work on for us. "But the conditions aren't easy in Durban and it was certainly difficult to hold onto the ball. There were quite a few turnovers in the game. And we knew they'd punish us if they turned us over." The Cell C Sharks have an ideal opportunity to improve on their overall performance tonight when they host Zebre from Parma, Italy. More importantly, Siya Kolisi and co can cement their place in the top six today with another full haul of championship points. Zebre are currently languishing at the bottom of the URC table, having lost all 10 their matches thus far in the competition.

“THE CONDITIONS WERE DIFFICULT, AND I THOUGHT THAT SCARLETS PROBABLY HANDLED THEM BETTER THAN US," EVERITT AGREED. The Italians arrived from Stellenbosch earlier this week, where they had suffered a 7-55 loss at the hands of the Stormers. The Cape-based franchise blitzed Zebre in the opening spell, running in five of the nine tries that they scored before the break already. At 0-35 in arrears, Zebre did stage a spirited comeback early in the second half, to score their only try of the match, but the effort wasn’t enough to avert their 10th defeat on the trot.

Even so, the Cell C Sharks are professional enough not to underestimate any opposition, and the men in black and white will take to the Hollywoodbets Kings Park field today with the single-minded determination of getting the business done, i.e. generating the necessary championship points to significantly boost their URC campaign. From Greytown to Glenwood

SKY’S THE LIMIT FOR KHUTHA Since returning from his stint with the Cheetahs last year, Khutha Mchunu has steadily started to stamp his authority in the Cell C Sharks’ front row. And, the 24-year-old is continuously pushing himself to be the best tighthead he can be… Khuthazani Kingdom Mchunu was born, on the 1st of July 1997, and bred under the starry skies of Greytown, on the border of the KZN Midlands and Zululand. Although humble beginnings, Mchunu has fond memories of his childhood. “Greytown’s a small town, and one pretty much knew everyone else,” he says. “Greytown had a great sense of community; any elder was seen as your father or mother. It was that type of environment. “I grew up in a pretty big family; there were 14 of us in the house and mom was the only one working. So, the community looked after us quite a bit.” Mom, however, wasn’t too fond of rugby during Mchunu’s primary school years. “She actually came to school one day and told the principal that I should stop playing,” Mchunu recalls.

“The principal begged her, though, arguing that it would be good for me to spend my energy on the rugby field. Being a rather naughty child, the extra-mural activity would calm me down, he suggested.” It was during his primary school years at Greytown Junior that Mchunu’s path crossed that of a certain Gert ‘Tiny’ Coetzee, his teacher and coach. “Like most people nicknamed ‘Tiny’, Gert was actually a big guy,” he chuckles. “And, he had a big heart, too. “Gert was instrumental in getting me to believe in myself, to believe that I could be good at playing rugby. I used to play from a young age, but never really thought of myself as good. “Gert made me believe that I could become a Shark, even a Springbok. “He promised Mom that he would take care of me, and he did. He carted me to rugby trials of his own accord, pushing me to become the best I could be.” As a youngster, Mchunu also had heroes, world-class players that he looked up to as role models. “Watching what ‘Beast’ (Mtawarira) did to Phil Vickery at scrum time during the series against the British & Irish Lions in 2009, he became an instant hero. “To be able, years later, to play with Beast, was really special. “I also admired Lawrence Sephaka, and then, of course, Os du Randt; I loved his style of play, for such a huge man.” Mchunu, however, almost gave up on the dream to emulate these greats of yesteryear. “Since Greytown is small, the opportunities were limited,” he explains.

“Going into Grade 11 I did give up on the dream to play rugby professionally, and decided, instead, to focus on my studies. That approach paid off, as I finished first in the grade.

Earlier in matric, Mchunu represented Glenwood at the annual Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival, where he performed brilliantly enough to be awarded a bursary from The Sharks Academy.

“Then, I received a rugby scholarship from Glenwood High School, which persuaded me to still give the game a go.

“My agent, though, advised me not to accept the bursary,” Mchunu recalls.

“Glenwood opened up many doors. One got to play against Grey College, Affies, all the big schools. “And, you got to play on TV! “Glenwood provided a platform from which I could catapult myself into professional rugby. Without Glenwood I wouldn’t be a professional player today…” Mchunu gained Craven Week selection from Glenwood in 2015, and recalls how Sharks U18 lost by a single point to Eastern Province. “We played well, and had beaten the Lions in our first match,” he says. “But, we received a red card within the first 10 minutes of the game against EP. Curwin Bosch was playing flyhalf for them, and was simply amazing. “Late in the game we were desperately defending on the halfway line, when Boschie dropped back into the pocket and 14 CELL C SHARKS VS ZEBRE RUGBY

“He reckoned that the way I’d been playing I might get offered a playing contract anyway, and, lo and behold, the Cell C Sharks did make me a good offer. As did the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions and WP. “The Cell C Sharks, however, have always been my first love, and I also figured that it would be a fantastic opportunity to learn from Boks like Beast, Lourens Adriaanse and Coenie Oosthuizen.” In 2020, Mchunu did swop the black of the Cell C Sharks for the white of the Cheetahs, but it was just a loan deal and, according to him, one of the best moves of his career. “At that stage, although I had been representing the Cell C Sharks at junior level, I had limited opportunities at senior level,” Mchunu explains. “So, I decided to join the Cheetahs and get some game time. “It was the most critical decision, which changed the trajectory of my career. By the time I returned to Durban, people knew who I was, having seen me play well at a higher level for the Cheetahs.”

TAPUAI V CRONJE Having starred for Harlequins in the Premiership of late, Ben Tapuai previously represented both the Reds, on 64 occasions, and Force in Super Rugby. The big midfielder, of Samoan heritage, also boasts seven test caps for the Wallabies, from 2011 tot 2012, as well as a huge left boot. At 33 years of age, this big unit - he tips the scales at almost 100kg - brings a wealth of expe-rience, as well as confidence, to the Cell C Sharks’ back division. Following Springbok ace Lukhanyo Am’s departure for Japan, Tapuai now has the opportuni-ty to make his mark in The Shark Tank. Tasked with the responsibility of stopping ‘Big Ben’ tonight is Erich Cronje, a 25-year-old product from Hoërskool EG Jansen in Boksburg. Originally signed by the Blue Bulls after school, Cronje’s senior baptism of fire was for the erstwhile Southern Kings during the 2019-20 PRO14 season. Following the dismantlement of the Kings in 2020, Cronje signed with the Pumas in Mbom-bela, before linking up with Zebre Parma in the URC. He was Zebre’s sole try-scorer against the Stormers in Stellenbosch last weekend.

HOWEVER, NATAL DID HOST THE ITALIAN NATIONAL SIDE ONCE BEFORE, ALMOST 50 YEARS AGO… Did you know that... * Zebre Parma are a professional Italian rugby franchise, based in Parma, Italy, that have competed in the United Rugby Championship and European Professional Club Rugby competitions since 2012. * Zebre are managed by the Italian Rugby Federation. * Dubbed ‘The XV of the North-West’, the Zebre franchise comprises the four committees of Emilia-Romagna, Liguria, Lombardy and Piedmont, as well as teams from Abruzzo, Lazio, Marche, Tuscany and Sicily. * The Parma Invitational Team was first founded in 1973. * During that same year, Italy toured the Republic of South Africa, playing against, amongst others, Natal at Kings Park on June 30, 1973. Natal beat Italy 23-3, with winger Keith Thoresson, on debut, running in four tries. * The newly established Parma had one representative in the Italian national side of 1973, namely loose forward Salvatore Bonetti, who would go on to represent Italy in 34 tests from 1972 to 1980. * The Parma team was disbanded in 1997 and re-established as the Zebre Parma professional outfit in 2012.
