The Cell C Sharks are eager to try secure a second consecutive home win, when they take on Western Province tonight, in this extremely tough 2022 edition of the Carling Currie Cup… Following their hard-fought win against Griquas a fortnight ago, the Cell C Sharks are currently occupying fifth spot on the 2022 Carling Currie Cup ladder, but with a game in hand. It’s very early days yet, however one doesn’t need a clairvoyant to spell out that success in this year’s domestic competition will require tons of resolve. For franchises like the Cell C Sharks, who are participating simultaneously in both the Carling Currie Cup and the United Rugby Championship, player resources will be stretched over the next five months, and the side competing in the Carling Currie Cup, in particular, will find the going tough against sides who are at liberty to select all their first-choice players. This was exactly the case during the Cell C Sharks’ first outing in the all-new Carling Currie Cup, two weeks ago, when they 10 CELL C SHARKS VS DHL WESTERN PROVINCE
came up against a full-strength Griquas unit that pushed the encounter right down to the wire. That the men in black and white were able to emerge with not only a valuable 24-23 victory but also heaps of credit, is a feather in the cap of Etienne Fynn’s charges. And, it proved that the Durban-based franchise indeed boasts impressive depth throughout their ranks. The Cell C Sharks, who enjoyed a slender 10-6 lead at the half, were understandably rusty too - Griquas already had a Carling Currie Cup game, against the Cheetahs, under the belt - yet they managed to find the necessary composure and purpose as the contest wore on to grind out the win in the end. The going cannot be expected to get any easier tonight, as the Cell C Sharks host Western Province at Hollywoodbets Kings
Park for another important Carling Currie Cup clash. The visitors from Cape Town have arrived in town with a 50 percent success rate to date, and are presently in third position on the table, but having played one more game than the Cell C Sharks. Province opened their account last month with an impressive 48-36 victory over the Lions, but four days later suffered a telling 21-40 defeat at the hands of the Bulls at home in Cape Town. Given that it’s a second home game on the trot for the Durbanites, they will once again not be satisfied with anything less than a win. Despite the restrictions in terms of selection, Fynn has once more been able to assemble a potent team for tonight’s encounter.
ONE DOESN’T NEED A CLAIRVOYANT TO SPELL OUT THAT SUCCESS IN THIS YEAR’S DOMESTIC COMPETITION WILL REQUIRE TONS OF RESOLVE. Skippered by Marius Louw at inside centre, the starting lineup sees the return to action of Springboks Curwin Bosch and Sikhumbuzo Notshe, at flyhalf and No 8 respectively, following injury layoffs, while utility back Inny Radebe has returned from the Eastern Cape to take up position at fullback. There certainly is ample firepower in this Cell C Sharks’ lineup for them to back themselves for another valuable triumph on home soil. The necessity for victory becomes even more apparent considering that the boys have three tough away assignments awaiting them over the next month and a half. On the 19th of this month they will be
heading upcountry to take on the Lions in Johannesburg, before tackling the Pumas in Nelspruit and the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld on March 4 and 16 respectively. The Cell C Sharks return to Hollywoodbets Kings Park only on March 23, when they will host the Toyota Cheetahs to mark the halfway stage of their Carling Currie Cup campaign. KOK V ZWELENDABA Named World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year in 2015, as well top tackler in the series, Werner Kok claimed bronze with the Blitzboks at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Following stints with WP and Top 14 champions Toulouse in 2018 and 2019 respectively, Kok signed with the Cell C Sharks in 2020. Since then, this live-wire three-quarter, who is equally at home at centre or on the wing, has brought heaps of energy and enthusiasm to the back division. Famous for his long blond locks, Kok has been particularly industrious in midfield of late, exhibiting with panache his characteristic defensive character. Outside centre Mnombo Zwelendaba is one of an exciting clutch of young talent coming through in the Western Province ranks. The 21-year-old was a star member of the Junior Springbok squad that won the bronze medal at the 2019 World Rugby U-20 Championship in Argentina. Educated at the famous Selborne College in East London, Zwelendaba was already named in the Stormers squad for the Super Rugby Unlocked tournament in 2020, and, following some injury problems, celebrated his Carling Currie Cup debut for WP against the Lions during the opening round of this year’s domestic competition.
