MATCH PREVIEW
RED-HOT ACTION IN STORE WORDS: ALBERT HEENOP
More than three months after they had originally been scheduled to play the Cell C Sharks in Durban, the Scarlets are back in town to contest this URC match that was last year postponed due to Covid-19. And, with both teams coming off handsome victories, what a contest tonight’s matchup promises to be! The Cell C Sharks returned from Italy a fortnight ago with a full haul of championship points, courtesy of their comprehensive 29-7 win against the 2021 PRO14 Rainbow Cup champions, Benetton, in Treviso. Naturally, Cell C Sharks’ coach Sean Everitt was well pleased with the result away from home, although, as he acknowledged, it wasn’t a flawless performance.
“And, credit to Benetton for the way that they kept us out, for the way they defended. They really put us under pressure at times. “We also didn’t have it our own way in the set piece. There’s always room for improvement and we’ve had a look at that. “We look forward now to playing this run of home games and making some progress on the log.”
“We were obviously glad to get the five points on the road, which put us in the top eight and top of the South African Shield,” Everitt acknowledged.
Everitt was, of course, referring to the next month and a half that will see the Cell C Sharks in action at Hollywoodbets Kings Park on no fewer than seven consecutive occasions.
“In saying that, it wasn’t a perfect performance. We still have work to do. “Yet, the boys stuck it out there. There were moments that really produced outstanding rugby.
Following tonight’s long-overdue outing against the Scarlets, Everitt’s charges will also be hosting Zebre, Edinburgh, Dragons, Lions, Leinster and Connacht, before travelling to Belfast, Northern Ireland, to

take on Ulster on May 21. That away assignment, however, is still a couple of months away, and for now the important thing for the men in black and white is to get their home run off to a winning start against the visitors from Llanelli, Wales. The Scarlets will no doubt pose a stern challenge, following their impressive showing against the Glasgow Warriors at home over the weekend. Dwayne Peel’s side really turned it on in the second half to wipe out an early 0-10 deficit and eventually record a runaway 35-10 victory that brought to an end a five-match winning streak for the Warriors. The win, the Scarlets’ fourth in this inaugural URC, sees them placed 12th currently on the standings, and, as Peel pointed out upon their arrival in Durban this week, the Welshmen will be fizzing to build on their fine, five-try effort against the Dragons.
IN SAYING THAT, IT WASN’T A PERFECT PERFORMANCE. WE STILL HAVE WORK TO DO. YET, THE BOYS STUCK IT OUT THERE. THERE WERE MOMENTS THAT REALLY PRODUCED OUTSTANDING RUGBY. “We have an opportunity to go up against a class side in a world-renowned stadium; it is great for our boys,” Peel observed, with reference to tackling a star-studded Cell C Sharks’ side at Hollywoodbets Kings park. “We have some young guys travelling with us, the likes of Joe Roberts, so for people like him to go up against world-renowned stars is great. I am looking forward to it.
“Look, the task and magnitude of the games (in South Africa) is huge, there are some big units in both the Cell C Sharks and Bulls sides. We have prepped well and are looking forward to it as well as spending some time together on tour.” table respectively. CELL C SHARKS VS SCARLETS

CAPTAINING THE CELL C SHARKS…
‘IT IS HUGE’ The Cell C Sharks will tonight be led out at the Hollywoodbets Kings Park for the very first time by Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, who has, alongside fellow Bok Makazole Mapimpi and Olympic 200m breaststroke sensation, Tatjana Schoenmaker, been nominated for the South African Sports Awards… WORDS: ALBERT HEENOP 12 CELL C SHARKS VS SCARLETS
He boasts 63 tests for his country, of which 33 as Springbok captain. He was, of course, the man who piloted South Africa to that epic Rugby World Cup title in Japan two and a half years ago. Tonight 30-year-old Siya Kolisi is, however, adding another accolade to his already illustrious résumé, namely that of Cell C Sharks’ captain. It is a milestone that the Bok skipper is particularly proud of. “It is huge,” he enthuses. “Just to be able to play for the Cell C Sharks alone is an honour. “It’s such a big club, with so many legends that have played for them before. Hopefully, I can also one day leave this place even better than I found it. “It really is a huge honour to lead this team, and the great thing about it is that there are so many really, really good players, who are all leaders in their own right, which is important as that means that I can simply focus on playing my game.” Although a Stormers fan since childhood, one of Kolisi’s earliest childhood heroes was former Sharks flanker Solly Tyibilika. “His school, Loyiso High School, was just down the road from where I grew up in Port Elizabeth,” Kolisi recalls. “As a kid of about six years old I used to climb onto the roof of our house, from where I was able to watch Solly play for Loyiso. Naturally, when he became a Springbok a few years later I was absolutely delighted; it was so inspirational.” Having signed with the Durban-based franchise a year ago, Kolisi has played all seven of his games in black and white to date CELL C SHARKS VS SCARLETS

under the captaincy of Lukhanyo Am. Am and Kolisi, though, have been long-term teammates at national level, sharing in the RWC glory in 2019, and have the utmost respect for each other. “Lukhanyo and I get along really great,” Kolisi agrees. “We actually started speaking about me coming to the Cell C Sharks a long time ago, and, although it initially was a bit of a joke - started by ‘Beast’ (Mtawarira), who’s always ready with a joke - it became real. “I’ve spoken a lot to Lukhanyo about what I wanted to do, that I wanted to focus on my rugby, and working together with him, as captain, has been perfect in that regard. I mean, everyone knows that he is a great leader himself. “Lukhanyo is always keen to chat and to hear other people’s opinions. “But, as I said, there are a lot of leaders in this group.”
14 CELL C SHARKS VS SCARLETS
Even though Springbok requirements - he played 13 tests last year - have limited his Cell C Sharks appearances thus far, Kolisi is having a ball in The Shark Tank. “It’s been an amazing experience. “I really enjoy the people. Like the team, everybody’s so welcoming and people, whether they know you or not, are always willing to help. I appreciate that so much.” As captain in tonight’s important URC encounter with Welsh outfit, Scarlets, Kolisi harbours no illusions about the magnitude of the task at hand - not only today, but over the next month and a half. “We need to win period,” he says. “That’s all that we need to do going forward. “We have to make sure that we finish in the top eight and that we qualify for the Heineken Champions Cup.”

MAJOR MATCHUP
NOTSHE V KALAMAFONI Sikhumbuzo Notshe is making his first start for the Cell C Sharks in the URC tonight. Sidelined for nine months due to a serious knee injury, the six-test Springbok No 8 has oper-ated off the bench of late, swiftly regaining the fabulous form that rendered him one of the Cell C Sharks’ stars during the table-topping 2020 Super Rugby campaign, which unfortu-nately had to be aborted due to Covid-19 . Since arriving from the Stormers two seasons ago, Notshe (28) has certainly rejuvenated his career at the Cell C Sharks and will be fizzing to regain the dynamic level of play that earned him his first international cap against Wales in 2018. Scarlets No 8 Sione Kalamafoni has represented Tonga consecutively at the last three Rugby World Cup tournaments. The powerhouse loose forward, who is equally at home on the blindside flank, joined Scar-lets from the Leicester Tigers a couple of seasons ago, and previously also represented Gloucester. With 37 international caps under the belt, Kalamafoni produced a Man-of-the-Match per-formance in Tonga’s sensational 1914 defeat of France at RWC 2011, and has, during his first 12 seasons in the UK, built up a reputation as a robust ball carrier in Premiership Rug-by. Was voted Scarlets Player’s Player of the Season in his first year with the franchise.
