MATCH PREVIEW
BRACE YOURSELF FOR SHARKSFEST! WORDS: ALBERT HEENOP
The biggest game of the season. So far. That is how tonight’s confrontation between the Cell C Sharks and top-of-the-table Leinster is shaping up. As the URC is busy entering the business end of proceedings, a feeding frenzy is exactly what the Cell C Sharks need to boost their standing on the ladder and qualify for that all-important quarter-final berth… Given the adverse weather conditions of a fortnight ago, when the Cell C Sharks hosted the Lions in the rain, that vital encounter was always going to be decided by forward power and shrewd tactical kicking.
of Edinburgh, a fortnight earlier, were heeded.
That was indeed the case, with the Cell C Sharks’ front row of Ox Nche, Bongi Mbonambi and Thomas du Toit at times annihilating their Lions’ counterparts at scrum time, and halfbacks Curwin Bosch and Jaden Hendrikse dictating matters superbly with the boot.
“We showed glimpses of good stuff, but had to get the all-round game right. And, I think we’re beginning to get to that point now.
Even so, the Cell C Sharks still managed to record four tries, for a crucial bonus point, and achieve one of their most authoritative victories yet in the inaugural United Rugby Championship. No doubt, the lessons learnt at the hands 10 CELL C SHARKS VS LEINSTER RUGBY
“Against Edinburgh, we did everything right except to cross the chalk,” observed head coach Sean Everitt.
“Six tries against the Dragons three weeks ago, another bonus-point win against the Lions; we couldn’t have hoped for a better build-up to tonight’s big game against Leinster. “The thing is, we had a good plan in place against the Lions. “Jaden is busy regaining the form that earned him selection for South Africa, and,
between him and Curwin, they managed the game exceptionally well. They managed to keep the pressure up on the Lions. “So, we came out on top in the kicking duel, and, when the opportunity arose to move the ball wide, the guys showed intent and scored tries. In the end, we got the bonus point, and that was what we wanted.” The full haul of championship points meant that the Cell C Sharks were able to move back up into sixth spot on the table, and tonight they host the log leaders, Leinster, in a crucial home game that could see the Durban-based outfit improve their standing even more. The champion Irish outfit arrived in Durban earlier this week on the back of a comprehensive 56-20 Champions Cup victory over Connacht at the Aviva Stadium, to qualify for the quarter-finals of that competition, while, on the URC stage, they also saw off Munster 34-19 at Thomond Park three weeks ago.
SIX TRIES AGAINST THE DRAGONS THREE WEEKS AGO, ANOTHER BONUSPOINT WIN AGAINST THE LIONS; WE COULDN’T HAVE HOPED FOR A BETTER BUILD-UP TO TONIGHT’S BIG GAME AGAINST LEINSTER. Although Leinster have decided to rest some of their Ireland internationals for this visit to South Africa, the Irish outfit have enormous quality in depth and can under no circumstances be underestimated.
Rhys Ruddock captains Leinster, who are currently 10 points clear at the top of the URC standings. Next week the Cell C Sharks host Connacht, to bring the curtain down on a series of seven successive home games, before heading for Belfast, Ireland, a month later to take on Ulster in their final league outing of the season. The boys have it all to play for. is very similar to what we faced against the Bulls.” CELL C SHARKS VS LEINSTER RUGBY

THE DREAM THAT BECAME A REALITY As a youngster growing up in the heartland of KZN, Phendulani Buthelezi always dreamt of playing for the Cell C Sharks. At first it was merely a dream, but this resolute young man committed himself to realising that vision and today this consummate professional, popularly known as ‘Phepsi’, has, at the age of 22, already established himself as a hero in black and white… Playing with the confidence and maturity of a seasoned international, Phepsi Buthelezi is relishing competition at the highest level. This was again evident a fortnight ago, when Buthelezi was named Man of the Match in the crucial 37-10 win against the Lions. He was all over the park, regularly smashing across the gain-line and his supreme support earned him one of the Cell C Sharks’ four tries.
WORDS: ALBERT HEENOP 12 CELL C SHARKS VS LEINSTER RUGBY
It surely is only a matter of time before Buthelezi follows in the footsteps of legendary No 8s in black and white, like Tom Bedford, Wynand Claassen and Gary Teichmann, who went on to lead South Africa with distinction too. Cell C Sharks’ coach Sean Everitt alluded to Buthelezi’s sheer professionalism, in the way that he prepares himself for the on-field battles, and that thoroughness ultimately also helped Buthelezi to realise his childhood dream. “I am pleased with my form at the moment,” he acknowledges, “but credit must go to the squad for the way we, as a unit, have been performing. “The injury to Sikhumbuzo Notshe has afforded me more game time, to familiarise myself with how things get done at this level. I have always been and will continue to be a student of the game.” A classic rags-to-riches tale saw this congenial young man from Hluhluwe, in the heart of Zululand, progress from humble beginnings as a Durban Collegians U15 club player in 2014 to the captaincy of the SA U20 side four years later. Now, less than a decade on, his natural leadership instincts have also seen him skipper the Cell C Sharks on occasion. “I had a pretty casual upbringing, quite different from someone who grows up in a city like Durban,” he says. “Growing up on a farm, we enjoyed the simple things in life. I had three brothers and a sister, all older than me, and we spent a lot of time playing in the yard. “We did all kinds of sports, from cricket, rugby and soccer to swimming. We are a very active family, and highly competitive - even to this day. CELL C SHARKS VS LEINSTER RUGBY
13
“My brothers played rugby at Hluhluwe Primary School, we used to go to their games and they would come back home and talk about the sport. That’s how I fell in love with the game.
“That’s probably one of my best rugby memories, if not the best.
“However, things got tough when my dad passed away in 2008. Mom had to look after five kids on her own, and pay the school fees. “I was fortunate, at the time, to receive a scholarship at DHS, like one of my elder brothers, and I never looked back. “I am still a family man at heart, though; we never had much, but we had each other…” While at DHS, Buthelezi decided to also join Durban Collegians, where he played junior rugby for the famed club. “That exposure, at such a young age, was so important to me,” he explains. “I had reached a point where I just wanted to play. However, coming from the farm, I wasn’t as fortunate as other boys who had been able to develop their finer skills from a young age and, as a result, I always had to play catch-up. “Playing for Collegians provided more exposure to the game, at a competitive level, which boosted my rugby development considerably, and I enjoyed great times with the club.” Buthelezi’s progress spectacular.
was
swift
and
He represented KZN at the U16 Grant Khomo Week and back-to-back U18 Craven Week tournaments. In 2017, Buthelezi also steered the DHS First XV to a pulsating and historic 20-17 triumph against arch-rivals Glenwood High School DHS’ first victory over the ‘Green Machine’ in more than a decade! 14 CELL C SHARKS VS LEINSTER RUGBY
“At schoolboy level, the rugby gets really competitive, and to be able to beat Glenwood in matric, having lost to them for four years in a row… I’m getting goosebumps just speaking about it! “If I could, that’s the one moment in my life that I would love to relive.” Phepsi Buthelezi is now living the dream with the Cell C Sharks, with yet another massive game coming up tonight. However, as he points out, today is about more than just taking on the log leaders, Leinster. “As a province we have been through a lot over the past two weeks,” he says. “That is something that we spoke about as a squad, and it is a wonderful opportunity to just make everyone happy. “Recent events have also taught us to take nothing for granted, and being able to represent the Cell C Sharks certainly is something I will never take for granted. “Growing up, playing for this team seemed just like a distant dream. So, every time I pull on the jersey is an absolute highlight.”

MAJOR MATCHUP
MBONAMBI V KELLEHER Closing in on a half century of Springbok caps, Bongi Mbonambi was not only a key member of South Africa’s RWC-winning team three years ago in Japan, but is also a central cog in a Cell C Sharks’ frontrow unit that is shaping up as the most formidable in the URC. Mbonambi started out at the Bulls, but transferred to WP in 2015, where he represented the Stormers on 74 occasions, before joining forces with the Cell C Sharks last year. His test debut was against Ireland in 2016, yet he operated a dozen times off the bench before getting his first start. Mbonambi, however, made the No 2 jumper his own during the triumphant RWC 2019 campaign. Rónan Kelleher originally operated as an outside back and loose forward, before shifting to the front row and eventually settling at hooker. Kelleher scored a brace of tries in Leinster A’s 15–8 win against the Scarlets Premiership Select outfit to clinch the final of the inaugural Celtic Cup in 2018, and made his senior Leinster debut the following year against the Southern Kings. His Ireland debut was against Scotland in 2020, and he has since accumulated 18 caps in the revered green jumper. Kelleher shares the record for most tries by an Ireland player in a test, having scored four in the 71–10 annihilation of the USA in 2021.
