MESSAGE TO OUR FANS
It has been a challenging time and we have missed every minute of rugby. The team has missed running out at Jonsson Kings Park to your cheers and playing their hearts out in the black and white jersey. We have missed the smell of the boerewors rolls being braaied on the outer fields, the laughter and enjoyment of children having fun in the Small Zone, the music and entertainment, but most of all seeing our community connect and embrace each other through the sport we love.
Thank you for standing by us, shouting for us and always keeping the black and white in your hearts and minds. We look forward to going out there and playing for you. Our fans are and will always be our heartbeat. #OurSharksForever DR. EDUARD COETZEE THE SHARKS CEO
We find ourselves in a unique situation, where being apart now is important to be together later. And as we return to the playing field, we will play keeping all our fans in spirit and knowing we have your loyal support and passion from far and wide. CELL C SHARKS VS TAFEL LAGER GRIQUAS

MATCH PREVIEW
PLAY TO PLAN ‘N POTENTIAL WORDS: ALBERT HEENOP
A 20th Carling Currie Cup final berth is beckoning for the Cell C Sharks in a fortnight’s time, but for that momentous goal to be realised Sean Everitt’s charges need to see off a highly competitive Griquas team in today’s semifinal. To be sure, the boys in black and white will hardly be underestimating the visitors in peacock blue this evening... The memory of Griquas, who last managed to clinch the coveted Carling Currie Cup in 1970, upstaging the Cell C Sharks here in The Tank barely a month ago is still vivid and should serve as ample motivation for the home side to deliver their A-game tonight. Coached by former Sharks scrumhalf Scott Mathie and Springbok lock Albert van den Berg, Griquas have been an absolute revelation in this year’s Carling Currie Cup. The Kimberley-based team won five of their 12 games in this year’s domestic showpiece. Those victories included wins against Western Province (twice), the Cheetahs and Lions, while they also drew 13-13 with the Pumas and suffered agonisingly close defeats in their return encounters with the Lions (42-45) and 8
CELL C SHARKS VS TAFEL LAGER GRIQUAS
Cheetahs (32-33). Their 37-27 bonus-point triumph against the Cell C Sharks in Durban on July 31, despite the fact that they had been reduced to 12 men through yellow cards in the second half, showcased the class of this Griquas outfit in no uncertain terms and went a long way to ensuring their impressive thirdplace standing on the 2021 Carling Currie Cup table. The Cell C Sharks concluded the league phase of their current campaign last weekend with a disappointing 24-35 loss to WP at home. However, whereas it was a last-chance saloon scenario for the visitors from the Cape, to sneak into the playoffs, the Durban-based side had already been assured of a home semi-final and possibly
lacked a bit of the competitive edge that has been a hallmark of their Carling Currie Cup challenge this year. Despite the fact that no fewer than four of their 12 fixtures this year had to be scrapped, three of which due to covid-19 protocols, the Cell C Sharks still managed to win five of their games, including an impressive 35-28 victory over the defending Carling Currie Cup champions, the Bulls, and lost only three. In the process, they recorded 39 tries, exhibiting the adventurous vibe of this bunch of relatively young players. More profoundly, though, they only conceded 26 tries - the least in the competition. Defensive character shapes great teams, and the sound defensive screen that the Cell C Sharks have been developing of late, in conjunction with new defence coach John McFarland, certainly bodes brilliantly for the future of this group.
THEIR 37-27 BONUS-POINT TRIUMPH AGAINST THE CELL C SHARKS IN DURBAN ON JULY 31, DESPITE THE FACT THAT THEY HAD BEEN REDUCED TO 12 MEN THROUGH YELLOW CARDS IN THE SECOND HALF, SHOWCASED THE CLASS OF THIS GRIQUAS OUTFIT IN NO UNCERTAIN TERM Being a performance driven unit, Everitt’s man will be fizzing to regain their competitive edge swiftly following the hiccup against WP, play to plan and, most importantly, play to their full potential against Griquas tonight to qualify for next Saturday’s Carling Currie Cup final - their 20th in the history of the union. BACK TO THE FUTURE Around the globe in eight years. That has been the story of Lionel Cronje’s career over the past decade. As no stranger to The Shark Tank, the seasoned pivot is back on loan in black and white to help shape the future of the Cell C Sharks... WORDS: ALBERT HEENOP 10 CELL C SHARKS VS TAFEL LAGER GRIQUAS
The Lionel Cronje story started 32 years ago in Bloemfontein, where he was born, but it was in the picturesque Eastern Cape settlement of Queenstown that his interest in the oval ball game was sparked and nurtured. “Brother Pierre, who’s five years older than me and represented KZN U20 in 2004, and I would play rugby in the garden, while attending a traditional boys school like Queens College, with a big focus on team sports like rugby and excellent coaches like John Duncan, Clinton Löest and Dave McEwen, obviously played a huge role in shaping me as a player and person,” Cronje recalls. Since leaving school, he has indeed travelled the world playing the game, to such an extent that he might well launch his own travel agency once his playing days are something of the past. An SA U20 representative in 2009, Cronje had stints with the Bulls, Cheetahs, Kings, Lions and WP (he played against The Sharks in the Currie Cup final of 2010), as well as even the Brumbies, over the past decade, while, over the last five years, he has spent industrious seasons with Verblitz in Japan. “Starting out as a senior player, one naturally dreams of representing a single union for 10 to 12 years and becoming a household name in that team,” he says. “Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work out that way for me, and it has been a challenge moving from team to team, often not by choice, to try and keep the dream alive. “However, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ve learnt so much playing with various teams and under several top coaches. “Jake White has really looked after me a lot over the years, while other coaches like Deon Davids, at the Southern Kings, provided awesome opportunities for me. 11
“And, now, Sean Everitt, who coached me at the Cell C Sharks before, has given me the opportunity to come back on loan and keep the dream alive. “So, I wouldn’t change it for the world.” There’s a saying that nothing can substitute experience. That is certainly true in the case of Lionel Cronje. Since rejoining the Cell C Sharks, he has added heaps of composure to the back division, especially when the chips were down. One of only a handful of players over 30, while the average age of the team is 25 and the captain is only 22, Cronje is thoroughly enjoying the youthful vibe in the camp. “It has been acknowledges.
really
refreshing,”
he
“At first I was a bit worried, though, being basically the only player in his thirties, but then I was fortunately joined by the likes of Wiehahn Herbst, Lourens Adriaanse and Gerbrand Grobler.
12 CELL C SHARKS VS TAFEL LAGER GRIQUAS
“But, no, this time with the Cell C Sharks has certainly rejuvenated my career. “It is most exciting to experience the amount of talent that is available over here. “The Cell C Sharks are doing a great job nurturing the young talent, both local and from the Eastern Cape, with guys like Phepsi Buthelezi, Murray Koster and Ntuthuko Mchunu, to name only a few, coming through and really doing well.” The future for the Cell C Sharks no doubt looks extremely bright. Cronje, personally, will be heading back to the ‘Land of the Rising Sun’ following this Carling Currie Cup campaign, for one more season with Verblitz, but has his sights set on concluding his career on a high back in South Africa. “It would be awesome to play in a new competition like the United Rugby Championship, and to challenge myself during the latter part of my career at the highest level...”

FACTS, STATS & TRIVIA
SEMI STATS TODAY MARKS THE 27TH OCCASION ON WHICH THE CELL C SHARKS WILL BE CONTESTING A CARLING CURRIE CUP SEMI-FINAL. AND, AS YOU’LL SEE, THE BOYS IN BLACK AND WHITE KNOW A THING OR TWO ABOUT WINNING SEMIS... DID YOU KNOW THAT... The first Currie Cup semi-final that Natal contested was in 1956, when they beat WP 11-10 at Newlands to qualify for their maiden final, at home, against Northern Transvaal. Natal subsequently lost the final 8-9 in rather controversial fashion at Kingsmead Cricket Ground; Of the 26 Carling Currie Cup semi-finals that they contested so far, the Cell C Sharks have won 13; No fewer than 17 of the 26 semi-finals contested have been since 2000, though, and of those 17 the Cell C Sharks have won 10, which is nearly 60 percent; The most comprehensive semi-final win was the Natal Sharks’ 45-8 rout of Free State in 1999, but they went on to lose the final against the Golden Lions 9-32; The most remarkable semi-final win was Natal’s stupendous 26-15 victory over Free State at Kings Park in 1984. The win was extraordinary given that Natal was still in the B-Section of the Currie Cup, and Free State in the A-Section. The following week, Natal narrowly went down 9-19 to the defending champions, Western Province, in the final.
As for Griquas: They have only contested a couple of Carling Currie Cup semi-finals over the years, bearing in mind that in years gone by there have not always been semi-finals; Griquas have won the Currie Cup three times, in 1899, 1911 and 1970. In 1899 and 1911 semi-finals and finals had not yet been introduced; Griquas’ most recent Currie Cup triumph was seeing off Northern Transvaal 11-9 in sensational fashion during the 1970 final in Kimberley. Winger Buddy Swartz scored two tries for Griqualand West in the 1970 final, becoming the first player in Currie Cup final history to score more than one try; The last semi-final contested by Griquas was in 2019, when they lost 19-34 to the Golden Lions in Johannesburg. MAJOR MATCHUP
KOK V HOLLIS Having exploded onto the World Rugby Sevens circuit at Twickenham in 2013, Werner Kok needs no introduction as a Blitzbok champion. Voted World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year in 2015, as well as leading tackler in the series, he won bronze with South Africa at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Thereafter, Kok signed with WP as a draft player and in 2019 had a stint with Top 14 champions Toulouse. Since joining the Cell C Sharks last year, Kok has brought heaps of energy and enthusiasm to the back division and has been particularly industrious in midfield since being switched from winger to centre. A late try by centre Chris Hollis against the Pumas last week afforded Griquas a vital 13-13 draw and, most importantly, their spot in today’s Carling Currie Cup semi-final. Born in the Karoo town of Tarkastad, Hollis (23) was educated at Queens College and represented Border at the U18 Craven Week in 2016, before playing age-group rugby for the Blue Bulls for two years on the trot. Having starred for the champion NMU Madibaz in the 2019 Varsity Shield, Hollis was contracted by the Southern Kings, representing them in the 2019-20 Pro14, and, in only his second appearance, scored a try in 30-36 loss to Benetton in Treviso.
