MATCH PREVIEW
TIME TO UP THE ANTE WORDS: ALBERT HEENOP
Today it is the turn of the Scots to enter Shark-infested waters. It is also time for the Cell C Sharks to up the ante in this year’s Vodacom United Rugby Championship, as they host Edinburgh at Hollywoodbets Kings Park… The 38-6 victory over Italian outfit Zebre Parma last Saturday was the Cell C Sharks’ fourth win on the trot in the inaugural URC and, although they are still lying sixth on the current standings, Siya Kolisi and co are only three championship points adrift of the fifth-placed Edinburgh, the side from Scotland that they are hosting in The Shark Tank tonight. In order to progress up the ladder and catch up with the log leaders, Leinster, who are currently 14 championship points clear of the Cell C Sharks, the Durban-based side will have to step up a gear or two over the next few weeks - starting with tonight’s assignment against Edinburgh. Although the Cell C Sharks achieved what they had set out to do against Zebre last weekend, i.e. bagging a full haul of championship points, they were the first to admit that their level of performance was not yet where they want it to be. 10 CELL C SHARKS VS EDINBURGH
At times, the Cell C Sharks made heavy weather of subduing the Italians, who are currently propping up the log, and despite hard-grafting flanker Henco Venter powering across for the first try in the seventh minute already, the home side were only 10-3 up at the half. Four more tries followed after the break to secure the bonus-point win, but Cell C Sharks coach Sean Everitt acknowledged afterwards that the overall performance still lacked a degree of precision. “It was quite frustrating because we did so much and created so many opportunities,” Everitt lamented. “In the first half, in particular, we camped in their 22. We had 70% territory. “But, we just weren’t clinical enough.” To be sure, nothing less than a thoroughly
clinical performance will be good enough to ensure another vital home win for the Cell C Sharks tonight. According to visiting coach Mike Blair, Edinburgh is relishing their first sojourn in South Africa since 2019. The Edinburgh squad, boasting Scotland internationals Mark Bennett, Blair Kinghorn, Pierre Schoeman and Hamish Watson, arrived in town earlier this week in preparation for tonight’s tussle with the Cell C Sharks and Blair is keen to see how his charges will handle the heat - literally and figuratively speaking. “This two-week tour is going to be a brilliant challenge for the club and we’re really excited to face two excellent teams in the Cell C Sharks and Lions,” Blair said. “Being based in South Africa and getting to grips with challenging conditions and fast tracks, while facing off against different players – many of whom are Springboks – is what makes the URC such a different and fascinating league.”
IN ORDER TO PROGRESS UP THE LADDER AND CATCH UP WITH THE LOG LEADERS, LEINSTER, WHO ARE CURRENTLY 14 CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS CLEAR OF THE CELL C SHARKS, THE DURBANBASED SIDE WILL HAVE TO STEP UP A GEAR OR TWO With five home games left, including today’s outing against Edinburgh, the Cell C Sharks simply have to maximise their Springbok clout, the challenging conditions and fast track that Blair alluded to. If they do, the men in black and white could well be sitting pretty on the standings by the time the playoffs kick off in early June.

IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY Nineties Springbok legend Ruben Kruger was dubbed the ‘Silent Assassin’. A man of few words, Kruger’s play, work rate and, indeed, tackling did the talking. His nephew, Henco Venter, is cut from pretty much the same cloth, and, since joining the Cell C Sharks two years ago, this hard-grafting loosie has not only added immense value in terms of experience, but also provided invaluable leadership… WORDS: ALBERT HEENOP 12 CELL C SHARKS VS EDINBURGH
Born on March 27, 1992, in Bloemfontein, Henco Venter turns 30 years old tomorrow, and the Cell C Sharks’ stalwart would love nothing more than to celebrate with a convincing URC win against Edinburgh tonight. “That would certainly be much appreciated,” he chuckles. A boarder in Bloemfontein throughout his school career, Venter was able to spend weekends and holidays on the family farm in the Smithfield district of the Free State. “That was incredibly enjoyable,” he recalls. “Basically, I had the best of both worlds. That was also where I started playing rugby as a youngster with my cousins. “Also, my father was a school principal prior to becoming a farmer, so as a laaitie I used to spend a lot of time on the touchline, catching and kicking balls while Dad coached. “Rugby was really part of growing up, similar to eating.” Venter was a mere three years old when his late uncle, Ruben Kruger, starred for South Africa in the unforgettable RWC triumph of 1995. “I can’t remember a lot from back then, but I’ve subsequently saw all the video highlights and media reports,” Venter says. “And, we also watched him play for the Springboks later in the Nineties. “Ruben was my mother’s youngest brother, and he most definitely was a role model and left a huge impression on me.” Venter followed in Kruger’s footsteps by attending the famous Grey College in Bloemfontein. CELL C SHARKS VS EDINBURGH
13
VENTER WAS A MERE THREE YEARS OLD WHEN HIS LATE UNCLE, RUBEN KRUGER, STARRED FOR SOUTH AFRICA IN THE UNFORGETTABLE RWC TRIUMPH OF 1995.
“It was the best school for me, and helped to prepare me for a professional rugby career. “Just to be surrounded by some of the very best schoolboy players in the country, magnificent backs like Johan Goosen, Paul Jordaan, who also played for the Cell C Sharks a few years ago, Jan Serfontein and William Small-Smith, made the whole rugby experience at Grey unforgettable.” Venter would go on to accumulate almost 60 Super Rugby and Pro14 caps for the Cheetahs from 2015 to 2019, as well as almost 40 Currie Cup games for the Free State Cheetahs. “The Currie Cup titles that we won in 2016 and 2019 stand out, while the Pro14 also had its moments.” At the end of 2018, Venter also had a stint with Toshiba Brave Lupus in Tokyo, Japan. “That was an incredible experience, and a great learning curve,” he acknowledges.
14 CELL C SHARKS VS EDINBURGH
“I learnt so much playing alongside established international players like Richard Kahui (New Zealand) and Michael Leitch (Japan). It is refreshing to be exposed to guys who think a little bit differently about things.” Having been with the Cell C Sharks since the highly impressive Super Rugby campaign of 2020, which unfortunately had to be aborted due to Covid-19, Venter hasn’t looked back and he is thoroughly enjoying Durban, the people and, of course, the Cell C Sharks. “The two Carling Currie Cup finals that we’ve lost over the past couple of years were disappointing, yet highlights all the same,” he suggests. “We have learnt and moved on from those losses. “Although we’re not exactly where we want to be just yet, we are working on becoming better all the time. We are winning more and more, we’re in a good place in the URC at the moment and, when one can sense the internal improvement in the squad, it makes you most excited about the future.”

MAJOR MATCHUP
VOLMINK V BOFFELLI Veteran outside back Anthony Volmink replaces the injured Aphelele Fassi at fullback for to-night’s big clash with Edinburgh, and the Cell C Sharks couldn’t have asked for a more expe-rienced campaigner to step into the breach. Volmink also boasts heaps of gas and is, as a matter of fact, pretty similar in style to Fassi. The 32-year-old ex-Griquas flyer, who also did duty for the Cheetahs in the Pro14, made his Super Rugby debut for the Lions against the Cell C Sharks 10 years ago, and in 2013 ran in a record nine tries as the Golden Lions romped to a 161-3 annihilation of Limpopo Blue Bulls in the Vodacom Cup. Edinburgh signed 36-test Pumas star Emiliano Boffelli ahead of the 2021/22 URC. Rosario-born Boffelli made his Super Rugby debut for the Jaguares in 2016, aged only 21, and his international debut for Argentina followed against England in 2017. He was nominated for World Rugby Breakout Player of the Year that same season. An impressive Super Rugby campaign in 2019, which included a try in the semi-final win against the Brumbies in Buenos Aries, established Boffelli as the frontline fullback for the Pumas at RWC 2019. Boffelli celebrated his Edinburgh debut last November, with a try against the Dragons in the first couple of minutes of the match.
