However, with continued growth in terms of playing style, as well as a long-overdue Bok injection, John Plumtree’s charges are primed to finally overcome their adversity against the Dragons tonight… The Hollywoodbets Sharks have, since the return of legendary coach John Plumtree, set out to employ a bold new and innovative approach to their style of play. This approach requires the ball to be kept in play for far longer periods and plenty more passing, with a view to building workmanlike pressure on the opposition. It boils down to playing much more rugby, and really good rugby at that. To be sure, Plumtree’s team has played some pretty good rugby over the past five weeks, most of which on the road and in trying conditions, however the results have unfortunately not reflected this as yet. The Hollywoodbets Sharks have yet to register a win this year’s Vodacom United Rugby Championship.

The fact of the matter is, the boys have not only adopted a different style of play, but a difficult one too. It is an approach that necessitates an exceptional high skill level and impeccable attention to detail, and, quite naturally, this rather profound adjustment goes hand in hand with inevitable growing pains. Even though the number of tries have yet to increase, the Hollywoodbets Sharks have impressed experts with the attacking initiative they have taken, and the statistics prove it too. Last week, the home side were far superior to Irish outfit, Connacht, in respect of possession, clean breaks, defenders beaten and offloads, even scoring one more try than the visitors. (See Facts, Stats & Trivia) And, yet, they were once again ill rewarded on the scoreboard, suffering an extremely painful 12-13 defeat.

Today we are welcoming back a few more of the Bok stalwarts, who represented South Africa during the triumphant World Cup campaign in France recently, and these classy campaigners are certain to add much-needed prowess and panache to the promising Hollywoodbets Sharks’ campaign. The team is entering a crucial week in their URC challenge today against Welsh outfit, Dragons RFC, followed by a rather decisive derby away from home against fellow South African challengers, the Bulls. Mid-December sees a couple of Challenge Cup outings against Pau and the Cheetahs respectively, before the Hollywoodbets Sharks resume their URC campaign against the Stormers on December 30, in Cape Town.

Werner Kok’s statistics last Saturday against Connacht, read as follows: Eight defenders beaten; six clean breaks; 153 metres made; five offloads; and 82.9% tackle success. Just another busy afternoon at the office for the Hollywoodbets Sharks’ flyer. “I love to be involved, and to get active game time,” Kok enthuses, but, despite his energetic endeavours, and try, the home side still suffered an agonising 12-13 defeat. “The thing is, we played some really good rugby against Connacht, but just couldn’t get across the goal line.” The Hollywoodbets Sharks’ new playing style, which has been a hot topic of conversation of late, involves a lot of ball-in-hand play, and fits the live-wire Kok like a glove. “Previously, I had to chase a lot of kicks, and, even though I could do it, I wasn’t fond of it,” he says. “With this new approach, I have a lot more ball in hand and it suits me 100 percent. It’s just a matter of getting into position, so as to be part of the play.

“Dave Williams (attack coach) is passionate about the utilisation of space, and to run the ball. Whereas, previously, we would play the territorial game through a lot of attacking kicks, Dave is instilling in us an awareness of space, and encouraging the willingness to attack that space. “That means that we can even run the ball from our own 22, whenever the opposition closes the kicking space behind them. “It is a far more exciting approach, and very different from anything that we’ve done previously. However, it does require a pretty high level of ball skill, and that is something that we continuously need to work on. “This approach does take time to become fully effective, and we have had quite a bit to learn. turn things around, to really start scoring tries and to accumulate bonus points.” Kok admits that the past month has not been easy for the Hollywoodbets Sharks. “Nobody wants to lose five games in a row. It certainly isn’t what we’re striving for. “The good thing, though, is that the end goal, which has been set for us, is at season’s end; the URC is not won in November.

“We might have made life difficult for ourselves so far, but, once everything falls in place, we will fire. “We have had to take considerable risks from the outset with this new playing style; it is vastly different from what we are used to. “But, we know where we are headed and, if we just stick to the plan and eventually get it 100 percent right, we won’t be beaten easily…” @TheSharks

MAPIMPI VS DYER An absolute Springbok icon, Makazole Mapimpi was sadly ruled out of the latter stages of the recent Rugby World Cup tournament through a fractured eye socket, sustained in the pool match against Tonga in Marseille. Mapimpi, who shot to stardom during RWC 2019 when he became the first South African to score a try in a World Cup final, boasts a classic rags to riches career. He made his test debut in 2018 against Wales in Washington DC, and since then the 33-year-old Mdantsane-born flyer has scored a staggering 26 tries in 41 tests for South Africa. His Springbok try-scoring ratio of 64% is the fourth best of all time. Right wing Rio Dyer has been dubbed a “cult figure” at his homeground, Rodney Parade, in Newport, with fans regularly chanting “Rio, Rio, Rio!” whenever he is in possession. A bona fide speedster, Dyer made his Dragons debut in 2018 against Saracens, yet 2021/22 was a breakthrough season for him as he raced in for three tries in 15 matches.

THE STATS DON’T LIE… The Hollywoodbets Sharks might not have generated the results that they are gunning for, just yet. However, judging by their statistics thus far in the current edition of Vodacom United Rugby Championship, it is clear that John Plumtree’s philosophy of building pressure through keeping the ball in play is starting to taking shape, as the team is steadily growing into the new approach… *

Despite the fact that they lost 12-13 last weekend, the Hollywoodbets Sharks bossed Connacht in all attacking aspects of play.

Besides the fact that they outscored the Irish team by two tries to one, the home team also enjoyed a clear upper hand in terms of possession (57% - 43%), clean breaks (6-2), defenders beaten (29-8) and offloads (14-5).

Even as far as defence was concerned, the Hollywoodbets Sharks were better off than Connacht. They dominated territory (66% - 34%), while also exhibiting more favourable stats in respect of number of tackles (85-141), missed tackles (8-29) and tackle success (91% - 83%).

As far as overall stats for the URC go, the Hollywoodbets Sharks are currently the second best team in the competition concerning defenders beaten (107) and metres gained (2229).

Individually, Aphelele Fassi is tops as far as metres gained are concerned with 427 m, while both Werner Kok and Cameron Wright are among the top five when it comes to defenders beaten (15) and offloads (9) respectively.

Defensively, openside flanker James Venter has made the second most tackles (68) to date.

This earned him a Wales call up in 2022, against New Zealand, scoring a try on debut, and he was voted Dragons Players' Player of the Season. He followed that up with seven tries for Dragons in 2022/23. A member of Warren Gatland’s RWC squad this year, Dyer has recorded four tries in 14 tests.
