HEADING DOWN THE HOME STRETCH WORDS: ALBERT HEENOP
Today’s Round 17 encounter with Irish outfit Connacht brings the curtain down on a stretch of seven home games for the Cell C Sharks. With the playoffs in sight, the men in black are determined, though, that this will not be the last time they are in action at Hollywoodbets Kings Park during this year’s inaugural URC tournament… After 16 rounds of United Rugby Championship warfare, and six successive games at home, of which they have won five so far, the Cell C Sharks are currently sitting pretty in fourth spot on the 202122 table. And, in the top four is exactly where Sean Everitt’s men intend to stay, with a view to hosting a quarter-final in The Shark Tank in early June. The current situation is a far cry from the opening scenario of the inaugural URC, when the Cell C Sharks were required to play their first four matches in the UK and Ireland. It was a brutal baptism of fire, as the Durban-based franchise lost against Munster, Glasgow Warriors and Cardiff, managing only a solitary win, seeing off 10 CELL C SHARKS VS CONNACHT RUGBY
Ospreys 27-13. Now, seven months down the line, the Cell C Sharks have won 10 and lost only five of their 16 fixtures to date, with the match against the Stormers in January having ended in a 22-22 draw. The past couple of months have been particularly industrious, as the Cell C Sharks managed to emerge victorious in seven of their last eight games. The last six matches were all at home, but were preceded by invaluable away wins against the Bulls (29-22) and defending Pro14 Rainbow Cup champions, Benetton (29-7), in Italy. In The Shark Tank, since March 11 when they hosted and defeated Scarlets 37-20, Everitt’s charges have reigned supreme,
apart from one blemish in their run of six consecutive home games - a shock defeat at the hands of Edinburgh. The 5-21 loss to the Scots provided a timely wakeup call for the Cell C Sharks, though, and they have since then consolidated their campaign with three impressive wins against the Dragons, Lions and, most recently, topof-the-table Leinster. Even though they were made to work hard for the 28-23 bonus-point victory over the champions Irish side, it was a workmanlike performance by the home side, and something on which to build in today’s match against another team from Ireland, Connacht. Another home win, their sixth from eight, will no doubt improve the Cell C Sharks’ chances of finishing in the top four and, come June, qualifying for that all-important home quarter-final. However, the boys are not getting ahead of themselves, and are still treating their campaign on a week-to-week basis.
THE PAST COUPLE OF MONTHS HAVE BEEN PARTICULARLY INDUSTRIOUS, AS THE CELL C SHARKS MANAGED TO EMERGE VICTORIOUS IN SEVEN OF THEIR LAST EIGHT GAMES. Despite the fact that Connacht is languishing in 10th spot on the standings at the moment, they are not to be underestimated. After all, the Irishmen have seen off all three the other South African franchises, and just last Saturday pipped the Lions 33-30 in Johannesburg.
In addition, whereas the other three Irish franchises play tight, constructive rugby, Connacht’s style is more free-flowing, which renders them an unpredictable and dangerous prospect. Following today’s game, the Cell C Sharks enjoy a welcome three-week break, before heading north to Belfast to tackle Ulster for their last league match of the season, and an encounter that could prove to be a top-four playoff, with both the Cell C Sharks and Ulster currently sitting on 51 championship points. Seeing off Irish champions Leinster, who have been the pace-setters in the inaugural United Rugby Championship, last Saturday has been a highlight for the Cell C Sharks, and, more pertinently, catapulted the Durban-based outfit into the top four. “It’s always great to be able to beat the top-ofthe-table side,” Marius Louw acknowledges. “Even though they are resting some of their Ireland internationals, Leinster remains a well-coached side, and well-coached players normally perform well. “We did leave some points out there last Saturday night, but we’re continuously learning and to be learning, even from a victory, has to be positive.” At the death, with the scoreline 28-23 in favour of the home side, Louw and co had to tackle like men possessed to weather a ferocious Leinster onslaught - to emerge with yet another valuable home win. “The team displayed heaps of character with that defensive effort,” Louw says. “The players off the bench also had a big impact. “We probably could have played ourselves into a more favourable position beforehand, to prevent a situation where the match officials could determine our fate, yet the character that was on display in those final few minutes was inspirational.” The crowd support, with a URC record crowd of more than 20,000 spectators spurring on the home side, certainly also played a massive role. Louw agrees. “The entire buildup to last week’s SharksFest was special, and the fans definitely contributed from the very first kickoff. “They pulled us through when the chips CELL C SHARKS VS CONNACHT RUGBY

were down, and we are just so grateful to be experiencing that fantastic vibe at Hollywoodbets Kings Park again.” This underlines the importance of securing a home quarter-final. “Homeground advantage is huge,” Louw says. “Just look how well we have performed at home over the past couple of months. We’re playing in conditions that we are accustomed to. “And, it’s always awesome when one has your own fans cheering you on. “It certainly helped us last weekend.” Following tonight’s outing against Connacht, the Cell C Sharks have a threeweek breather, before flying out to Ireland to take on Ulster in Belfast, in their last league outing of the current URC season. “It remains vital for us to generate as many championship points as possible,” Louw reckons. 14 CELL C SHARKS VS CONNACHT RUGBY
“We would love to finish the league phase with another two wins, and we’re looking forward to the overseas trip. “However, we’re just taking things week by week, and our sole focus at the moment is on making sure that we win today against Connacht, who had a good outing against the Lions last Saturday. “And, we want to improve in every game. “The ‘team’ is playing a huge role in each of our individual performances. The players assist each other at practice, to ensure that we improve wherever we can. “The Cell C Sharks have high quality training sessions, and the competition in the squad is bringing out the best in everyone.”

FASSI V HANSEN Long established as a firm favourite with the Hollywoodbets Kings Park faithful, Aphelele Fassi returned from a month on the sidelines to once again set the stage alight during last weekend’s vital URC victory over top-of-the-table Leinster. With the Cell C Sharks 10 points in arrears, Fassi simply slit the Irish defence apart for Jaden Hendrikse to score a vital try right on halftime. Fassi also came close to fashioning a try for Curwin Bosch in the far corner, during the desperate last 10 minutes of the contest, but his offload, one of nine so far this season, was called forward by the TMO. Despite his injury layoff, Fassi already boasts 11 clean breaks, 25 defenders beaten and 591 metres gained. Aussie-born fullback Mack Hansen has been a standout performer in the inaugural URC. It comes as no surprise, as Hansen was a revelation at international level, too, during his first Six Nations stint with Ireland a couple of months ago. Born and bred in Canberra, Hansen is a versatile back who can slot in almost anywhere from 10 to 15, and represented Australia U20. However, he never quite managed to unseat the posse of established Wallabies in the Brumbies back division. That’s their loss, as Hansen currently tops the URC’s defenders beaten category with a tally of 44, and also features among the top performers as far as tries (6), successful carries (54), clean breaks (12), metres gained (666) and offloads (15) go. 26 CELL C SHARKS VS CONNACHT RUGBY
