CELL C SHARKS VS TOYOTA CHEETAHS
MESSAGE TO OUR FANS
It has been a challenging time and we have missed every minute of rugby. The team has missed running out at Jonsson Kings Park to your cheers and playing their hearts out in the black and white jersey. We have missed the smell of the boerewors rolls being braaied on the outer fields, the laughter and enjoyment of children having fun in the Small Zone, the music and entertainment, but most of all seeing our community connect and embrace each other through the sport we love.
Thank you for standing by us, shouting for us and always keeping the black and white in your hearts and minds. We look forward to going out there and playing for you. Our fans are and will always be our heartbeat. #OurSharksForever DR. EDUARD COETZEE THE SHARKS CEO
We find ourselves in a unique situation, where being apart now is important to be together later. And as we return to the playing field, we will play keeping all our fans in spirit and knowing we have your loyal support and passion from far and wide. CELL C SHARKS VS TOYOTA CHEETAHS

MATCH PREVIEW
CONSISTENCY IS KEY WORDS: ALBERT HEENOP
As the Cell C Sharks head into the business end of the current Carling Currie Cup season, the main attribute that head coach Sean Everitt will be looking for over the next fortnight is consistency of performance... A mere two weeks ago, Everitt’s charges suffered a dreadful blow to their campaign when Griquas upstaged them 37-27, in The Shark Tank. Even though the try tally was four apiece, the Cell C Sharks delivered a performance that was well below par and not deserving of victory. Barely a week later, Phepsi Buthelezi and co were back in action at Jonsson Kings Park, and on this occasion came up with a champion display to blow the defending Carling Currie Cup champions, the Bulls, out of the water during the second half and scoop a telling 35-28 win, with which they attained pole position in the domestic championship. 8
CELL C SHARKS VS TOYOTA CHEETAHS
Over the past week, however, fate once again had other plans as the all-important away game against the Pumas in Nelspruit had to be abandoned due to Covid-19 protocols, and there was somewhat of a paradox in the fact that Cell C Sharks had to forfeit four crucial championship points having not even set foot on the park. As much as that unfortunate call was out of their hands, the opportunity to consolidate a top-two standing on the log table in the run-up to the playoffs in September is well within their grasp today as they host the Cheetahs at home. The boys in black and white will have gained heaps of confidence from their earlier encounter with the Free Staters in Bloemfontein on July 24, when they outran
and outscored the opposition by five tries to four, for a high-scoring 47-30 away win. The Cell C Sharks certainly have what it takes to clinch a ninth Carling Currie Cup title this year, but then they need to consistently produce champion performances like those against the Cheetahs last month and the Bulls last week. With only three league games left to contest, there simply is no more room left for any slipups whatsoever.
Following this afternoon’s outing against the Cheetahs, the Cell C Sharks have one more away assignment left, against the Lions in Johannesburg next Saturday afternoon, before returning home to host Western Province on Saturday, August 28. As things currently stand on the Carling Currie Cup table, the Cell C Sharks, on 30 points, are occupying the second spot, four championship points adrift of the top-ofthe-table Bulls (34) and four points clear of the third-placed Griquas (26). You do the math... It’s all to play for. CELL C SHARKS VS TOYOTA CHEETAHS

RIDING THE CREST OF THE WAVE A born and bred Durbanite, and a keen surfer to boot, this hooker dynamo has delivered constantly powerful performances for the Cell C Sharks over the past four seasons. As a matter of fact, Kerron van Vuuren is currently one of the top try-scorers in the Carling Currie Cup and no doubt a key exponent in the tight tussle that is expected today... WORDS: ALBERT HEENOP 10 CELL C SHARKS VS TOYOTA CHEETAHS
The big and bruising hooker is one of those players that a team can turn to in an hour of need. This was the case last weekend, when Kerron van Vuuren powered across the goal-line early in the second half of the Carling Currie Cup encounter with the defending champions, the Bulls, here at Jonsson Kings Park. The try provided a watershed in the contest and inspired an invaluable bonus-point win for the Cell C Sharks. It also established Van Vuuren as one of the leading try-scorers in the domestic showpiece, with a tally of three to his name. It is interesting, though, to learn that he never played rugby as a youngster attending Morningside Primary School on the Berea. “My dad played a bit of rugby at school and in the army, but nothing major,” Van Vuuren says. “And, since Morningside didn’t offer rugby as a sport, I was more into cricket and soccer, as well as surfing.” He captained the surf team at school and can still be found to explore the wonderful waves of North Beach, Addington or Umhlanga Rocks on a regular basis. “The thing about surfing is that it’s so relaxing, and it’s good for the shoulders following a hard game of rugby.” Hence the fact that top South African surfer Jordy Smith was one of Van Vuuren’s earliest childhood heroes. As a matter of fact, it was only at Smith’s alma mater, Glenwood High School, that Van Vuuren first came into contact with rugby. “My friends all played rugby, so I decided to join them,” he recalls. “I started out in the U14 ‘E’ side, and literally learned the game at Glenwood. 11
HENCE THE FACT THAT TOP SOUTH AFRICAN SURFER JORDY SMITH WAS ONE OF VAN VUUREN’S EARLIEST CHILDHOOD HEROES. AS A MATTER OF FACT, IT WAS ONLY AT SMITH’S ALMA MATER, GLENWOOD HIGH SCHOOL, THAT VAN VUUREN FIRST CAME INTO CONTACT WITH RUGBY.
“I also liked watching the Cell C Sharks play, from the scholar’s benches, and simply loved the way Ryan Kankowski played the game; the way that he was able to transition between the forwards and the backs, his running with the ball and simply the freedom that he played with. “I tried to emulate Kanko’s style as a loose forward, but in grade 11 the then Glenwood First XV coach, Sean Erasmus, plucked me from the thirds, suggested that I switch to hooker and I’ve never looked back. “Erasmus literally taught me how to throw the ball into the lineout, as well as the finer techniques of front-row scrummaging, and the very next year I managed to make the Craven Week squad.”
“When I first arrived here in 2015, the Cell C Sharks had a host of big-name hookers, like Bismarck du Plessis, Kyle Cooper and Chiliboy Ralepelle. “I find that the youngsters push me to stay hungry and to continually deliver my best.” Deliver his best, he has certainly done over the past few years, having made his Super Rugby debut against the Sunwolves in Singapore two years ago. The past year and a half has presented a weird and, at times, exasperating time for everyone involved in rugby, and sport in general, due to Covid-19, as well as the recent riots. Van Vuuren, however, maintains that it’s imperative to stay positive and focussed during times like these.
Having matriculated, Van Vuuren headed up north to study Sports Science at UJ, and represented Golden Lions U19 at flank. Thereafter, following a short Vodacom Cup stint with Griquas, he returned home to force his way up the ranks in Cell C Sharkinfested ‘waters’.
“Last year was particularly frustrating, since we were top of the Super Rugby log at the time when the tournament was aborted due to Covid-19.
And, although there’s a plethora of hookers competing for the black and white No 2 jumper, he wouldn’t want it any different. “It’s always been like that,” he says.
“But, it’s been a learning experience for all. The important thing is to stay open-minded, to adapt and to simply take things as they come...”

“So, we will never know what might have happened.

FACTS, STATS & TRIVIA
NUDGING AHEAD SINCE 1895, WHEN THE FREE STATE RUGBY UNION WAS ESTABLISHED, THE CELL C SHARKS AND CHEETAHS HAVE PLAYED EACH OTHER ON 96 OCCASIONS IN THE CARLING CURRIE CUP COMPETITION, WITH THE MEN IN BLACK AND WHITE WINNING 50, LOSING 41 AND DRAWING FIVE OF THOSE ENCOUNTERS... DID YOU KNOW THAT... Prior to 1990, when Natal first won the Currie Cup, they played Free State 37 times, winning only 15, losing 20 and drawing 2 of the games; Since 1990, however, the Cell C Sharks and Cheetahs have played each other on another 59 occasions in the Currie Cup arena, with The Sharks winning 35, losing only 21 and drawing three times; From 2004 tot 2008 the Cheetahs won 10 Currie Cup games against The Sharks in a row, while The Sharks’ best run against the Cheetahs were seven (2011-14); Of the 59 Currie Cup games between these sides since 1990, 32 were played at Jonsson Kings Park, with the Cell C Sharks winning no fewer than 23 and losing only nine of those home games.
As far as winning the Currie Cup is concerned: The Cell C Sharks have won eight titles, with the last being in 2018 when they saw off WP 17-12 in the final at Newlands; The Cheetahs have won the Currie Cup on six occasions, of which one was drawn (2006). The last time they managed to lift the trophy was in 2019, when they pipped the Lions 31-28 in Bloemfontein. The Bulls clinched the 2020-21 title by seeing off the Cell C Sharks 26-19 in extra time of the final at Loftus Versfeld on January 30 this year, after the scores had been locked 19-19 at full time.

MAJOR MATCHUP
WRIGHT VS MEYER A talented, experienced and lively halfback, Cameron Wright has the gift for igniting players around him. Often times, when the chips are down, upbeat individuals like Wright can prove to be the catalyst for changing the course of a game. He attended both Westville Boys High and Hilton College, representing KZN at the Craven Week in 2012, and had his Currie Cup baptism of fire barely two years later already - as a wet-behind-the-ears 20-year-old. Two seasons with French Top 14 outfit Montpellier (2015-17) has equipped Wright (27) with the necessary experience to still play a key role for the Cell C Sharks. At 32 years of age, Tian Meyer has been around the block. Originally from Durban, where he was educated Werda Primary and, like Wright, Westville Boys High, the buoyant scrumhalf has over the past decade enjoyed productive stints with the Pumas, Lions, Griquas and the Cell C Sharks, before finally settling with the Cheetahs five years ago. His vast experience combined with ample leadership ability has regularly seen Meyer assume the Cheetahs captaincy, a role he will once again fulfil this afternoon. In addition, his knack for lifting the tempo of a game could be a factor in today’s contest.
