CELL C SHARKS VS VODACOM BULLS

MESSAGE TO OUR FANS

It has been a challenging time and we have missed every minute of rugby. The team has missed running out at Jonsson Kings Park to your cheers and playing their hearts out in the black and white jersey. We have missed the smell of the boerewors rolls being braaied on the outer fields, the laughter and enjoyment of children having fun in the Small Zone, the music and entertainment, but most of all seeing our community connect and embrace each other through the sport we love.

Thank you for standing by us, shouting for us and always keeping the black and white in your hearts and minds. We look forward to going out there and playing for you. Our fans are and will always be our heartbeat. #OurSharksForever DR. EDUARD COETZEE THE SHARKS CEO

We find ourselves in a unique situation, where being apart now is important to be together later. And as we return to the playing field, we will play keeping all our fans in spirit and knowing we have your loyal support and passion from far and wide. CELL C SHARKS VS VODACOM BULLS

MATCH PREVIEW

IT’S ALL ABOUT BOUNCING BACK WORDS: ALBERT HEENOP

Phepsi Buthelezi and co are hurting following their 27-37 defeat at the hands of Griquas last Saturday. These Cell C Sharks are far too committed and talented, though, to take that loss lying down, and are fizzing to get their Carling Currie Cup campaign back on track against the high-riding Bulls in tonight’s top-of-the-table clash... “The mark of the greatest of champions is how they react and respond to defeat. That is when they become enshrined in our hearts and minds – as they rise again and into the immortal pages of history.” This is according to Rasheed Ogunlaru, acclaimed British life, business and corporate coach. Following the disillusionment suffered over the past weekend, Ogunlaru’s viewpoint should resonate with the Cell C Sharks. It certainly is a philosophy that yesteryear’s heroes in black and white can vouch for. In 1990, the year when Natal first clinched the Currie Cup, they suffered a demoralising 6-28 defeat against Northern Transvaal at Loftus Versfeld, yet, merely a fortnight later, found the necessary resolve to turn the tables on the selfsame Northerns with a historic 188

CELL C SHARKS VS VODACOM BULLS

12 triumph in the final at Loftus. A former Natal captain who knows everything about winning against all odds is Wynand Claassen, who 40 years ago led the Springboks to an epic 24-12 win against the All Blacks at Athletic Park, Wellington, in 1981, after South Africa had been convincingly beaten by their Kiwi hosts in the previous test a few weeks earlier. From a Natal perspective, Claassen led the men in black and white to one of their most stupendous feats in 1984, when, still stuck in the B-Section of the Currie Cup, his team smashed A-Section top dogs Free State 26-15 in the semi-finals - just a week after Natal had slumped to a humiliating 10-27 loss against ‘lowly’ Northern Free State in the annual promotion relegation playoff. “And, don’t forget about 1980, when we came up against the mighty Northern Transvaal at Woodburn in Pietermaritzburg,” Claassen adds.

“Our flyhalf, Pete Smith (former CEO of the KZNRU), suffered a broken nose early in the game, and, since we were allowed only two reserves back in the day, normally a scrumhalf and hooker, Clive Kelly, a scrumhalf had to step into the breach at flyhalf - against Bok ace Naas Botha. “Although we still performed courageously against the Currie Cup champions, we eventually suffered a comprehensive 6-31 loss. “Barely a month later, however, we travelled up to Pretoria and stunned Northerns 22-19 in ‘Fortress Loftus’ - to record Natal’s first Currie Cup win against the Bulls in 41 years! “So, no game of rugby is ever a given. Each and every Saturday, or Friday as in this case, is different.

FROM A NATAL PERSPECTIVE, CLAASSEN LED THE MEN IN BLACK AND WHITE TO ONE OF THEIR MOST STUPENDOUS FEATS IN 1984 “The thing is, the Cell C Sharks have nothing to lose. Most people have written them off, while the Bulls are on a roll, with folks speculating that they might dominate the local scene for the next few years. “This is the ideal time for the Cell C Sharks to bounce back.” It is indeed, as Sean Everitt’s charges are heading to Nelspruit for a tough away assignment against the Pumas on Wednesday, before hosting the Cheetahs next Sunday. Thereafter, the Cell C Sharks have one more away game left, against the Lions on August 21, and a last home fixture against Western Province a week later, before the playoffs in early September.

POWERHOUSE IN THE MAKING Described by Cell C Sharks coach Sean Everitt as a ‘super powerhouse’ prospect at prop, having made the switch from No 8 just over a year ago, Ntuthuko Mchunu is indeed a most exciting home-grown prodigy with a bright future in black and white...

WORDS: ALBERT HEENOP 10 CELL C SHARKS VS VODACOM BULLS

The 22-year-old eighthman-turned-prop exploded onto the big stage in March this year during the preparation stages for the recent Rainbow Cup SA tournament, when he galloped through from more than halfway out, past half a dozen defenders, for a sensational solo try against the Lions in Johannesburg. Modest as he is, Mchunu had to be nudged to admit that scoring that long-distance try was quite a thrill. “The moment flashed by so quickly, though, that one had to pinch yourself to believe that it had actually happened,” he observes. “It was nevertheless an amazing experience. It’s not everyday that you see a prop run like that, so when the opportunity presents itself one has to make the most of it.” For Mchunu, however, running out at Jonsson Kings Park in the colours of the Cell C Sharks for the very first time, earlier against Griquas, was even more special, as it realised a childhood dream that had started more than 15 years ago at Piet Retief Primary School in Pietermaritzburg. “I was big into athletics, rugby and swimming until grade 9, when I decided to focus more on rugby and academics,” recalls Mchunu, who would go on to become head boy of the famous Maritzburg College in 2018. “As a youngster growing up in Napierville, I didn’t know much about College, apart from he fact that it was a great rugby school. Not too many kids from our neighbourhood attended College. “Besides, Piet Retief wasn’t a big primary school like Merchiston or Cordwalles. Even so, my primary school teachers always encouraged me to follow my dreams, regardless of where I come from. “Eventually arriving at College, as a young boy who loved rugby, I was really inspired looking CELL C SHARKS VS VODACOM BULLS

“THE MOMENT FLASHED BY SO QUICKLY, THOUGH, THAT ONE HAD TO PINCH YOURSELF TO BELIEVE THAT IT HAD ACTUALLY HAPPENED,” HE OBSERVES. “IT WAS NEVERTHELESS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE. IT’S NOT EVERYDAY THAT YOU SEE A PROP RUN LIKE THAT, SO WHEN THE OPPORTUNITY PRESENTS ITSELF ONE HAS TO MAKE THE MOST OF IT.”

at the honours board and learning about Springboks like Joel Stransky, Jesse Kriel, Butch James and Peter Grant, who had all walked the same path as I did. “Mr Ryan Kyle, who coached the Maritzburg College First XV in 2017, really took great care of me and had a huge influence on my career. I still have regular contact with him.” Having represented KwaZulu-Natal at the U18 Craven Week in 2017, Mchunu accepted a Sharks contract at the end of the following year, and the 22-year-old hasn’t looked back since. “Fez Mbatha said that The Sharks offered a really good environment where he found that he could grow as a player and person,” Mchunu says. “I took an interest in that, and it has exceeded all my expectations. To be able to grow and develop with contemporaries like Sanele Nohamba, Phepsi Buthelezi, Dylan Richardson and Jaden Hendrikse is very gratifying. “I am especially grateful to coach Sean

12 CELL C SHARKS VS VODACOM BULLS

Everitt for giving me, as a youngster, an opportunity.” Everitt was also instrumental in Mchunu, like one of his heroes, Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira, switching from back row to front row at the end of 2019. “We’d been discussing the possibility, in conjunction with Mike Horak, the whole year, and so I eventually made the conscious decision to give it a crack.” Mchunu is settling in nicely on the loosehead side of the Cell C Sharks scrum, even though the pack took a bit of a hammering at the hands of Griquas last Saturday. “It was a most disappointing result, but we’ve taken it on the chin,” he says. “On Monday, we had a good look at where things went wrong and then put it to bed. It’s going to be tough, but we’re primed to bounce back. “Our performance against the British & Irish Lions at Loftus Versfeld a month ago showed what this team is capable of...”

FACTS, STATS & TRIVIA

THE ARCH-RIVALRY RESUMES TODAY MARKS THE 86TH CARLING CURRIE CUP ENCOUNTER BETWEEN THE CELL C SHARKS AND BULLS, SINCE 1938 WHEN NORTHERN TRANSVAAL SPLIT FROM THE TRANSVAAL RUGBY UNION TO FORM ITS OWN GOVERNING BODY... DID YOU KNOW THAT... Of the first 29 games between these two sides, from 1938 tot 1990, Northern Transvaal won 25 and Natal only three, while one was drawn; Since the 1990 Currie Cup final, however, The Sharks and Blue Bulls have played each other on 56 occasions in the Currie Cup arena, with The Sharks winning 36, losing only 18 and drawing twice; Since 2000, The Sharks have hosted the Blue Bulls at Jonsson Kings Park on 20 occasions, winning no fewer than 17 of those and losing only four; The last time the Blue Bulls managed to beat the Cell C Sharks in a Currie Cup encounter in Durban was in 2015. The score was 17-13.

The Cell C Sharks and Bulls have now contested four Currie Cup finals, with each winning twice: The first time Natal competed in a Currie Cup final was 65 years ago, when Peter Taylor’s side narrowly lost the 1956 showdown 8-9 to Northern Transvaal at Kingsmead, courtesy of a controversial try awarded to Northerns at the death. Natal first won the Currie Cup in the NRU’s centennial (1990), with a sensational 18-12 victory over Northern Transvaal at Loftus Versfeld. Natal winger Tony Watson ran in the match-winning try in the second half, with Joel Stransky contributing four penalty goals and a conversion. The Sharks again saw off the Blue Bulls in a Currie Cup final in 2008, winning 14-9 through tries by Ruan Pienaar and Frans Steyn, converted by Pienaar and French flyhalf Frédéric Michalak respectively. The Bulls clinched the 2020-21 title by seeing off the Cell C Sharks 26-19 in extra time of the final at Loftus Versfeld on January 30 this year, after CELL C SHARKS VS VODACOM BULLS

MAJOR MATCHUP

BUTHELEZI V LOUW Phepsi Buthelezi continues a long line of legendary No8s to have led the men in black and white with distinction over the years. Iconic names like Tom Bedford, Wynand Claassen and Gary Teichmann spring to mind, and if Buthelezi’s stirring leadership and drive over the past month and a half are anything to go by, the young man may well emulate his prestigious predecessors by also attaining the captaincy of South Africa one day. Having to lead the Cell C Sharks at only 22 years of age is a tall order, yet Buthelezi has embraced the responsibility with gusto, while the level of his personal play has remained at a very high level. Elrigh Louw has been one of the oustanding loose forwards on the domestic scene over the past few months. As a ferocious carrier of the ball, he has been tipped to become the Bulls’ next Duane Vermeulen, and the 21-yearold has famously even taken on his illustrious Springbok team-mate at practice. Louw has operated at No 8 for the majority of his career, for amongst others the Junior Springboks and Southern Kings, but, with his supreme physicality, has also excelled at blindside flanker for the Bulls. Today’s one-on-one confrontation is shaping up as the potential battle for the Springbok No 8 jumper in future.
