SOUTHERN SHOWDOWN WORDS: ALBERT HEENOP

The Cell C Sharks produced arguably their best performance of the season last Saturday in Johannesburg, to keep alive their hopes of reaching next weekend’s final of the inaugural PRO14 Rainbow Cup. It is indeed all or nothing today, as Sean Everitt’s charges host the top-of-the-table Bulls in The Tank... A fortnight ago, I described today’s return date between the two arch-rivals at Jonsson Kings Park as a mouth-watering affair, since “it could turn out to be a championship-deciding fixture”. Well, that is exactly how things panned out. Whoever triumphs here tonight - the Cell C Sharks need to win with a bonus point and deny the Bulls any championship points will be heading to the home of Benetton rugby, the Stadio Comunale di Monigo in Treviso, Italy, for next Saturday’s Rainbow Cup's North-South final. Being four championship points adrift of Jake White’s high-riding Bulls, the Cell C Sharks certainly have their work cut out for them. The visitors’ superior points differential means that should the home side manage to just win and finish level with 8

the Pretoria-based outfit in terms of championship points, the Bulls will still be contesting next weekend’s grand NorthSouth final. The Cell C Sharks therefore don’t need a clairvoyant to spell out exactly what is required tonight. The boys need to record four or more tries, while at the same time denying their opponents any bonus points for tries or losing with seven points or less. This scenario suggests that the Cell C Sharks need to be 100 percent on top of their game, not only in terms of attack but also as far as defence is concerned. And, a lot of cool heads will be needed in the heat of what is shaping up as red-hot battle. Everitt and his team would have gained heaps of confidence from last Saturday afternoon’s showing upcountry, though, as the team, minus a host of Springboks who had to be rested, delivered a rather lethal

performance to comprehensively dismantle the Lions 33-21 and by five tries to three. Of particular interest was the grit and panache on display by the peripheral players who had to step into the breach left by the Boks. At the back, veteran Anthony Volmink delivered a vintage performance in the No 15 jumper, regularly thwarting the opposition defence from deep. Blitzbok champion Werner Kok was brimming with courage and energy in the relatively unfamiliar position of outside centre, while Manie Libbok and, later, Boeta Chamberlain called the shots in supreme fashion at flyhalf.

THE CELL C SHARKS THEREFORE DON’T NEED A CLAIRVOYANT TO SPELL OUT EXACTLY WHAT IS REQUIRED TONIGHT. THE BOYS NEED TO RECORD FOUR OR MORE TRIES, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME DENYING THEIR OPPONENTS ANY BONUS POINTS FOR TRIES OR LOSING WITH SEVEN POINTS OR LESS. Not to mention World Cup winner Makazole Mapimpi’s sensational return to the fold following his homecoming from Japan! Up front, big Kerron van Vuuren seized the opportunity with both hands to deliver a typical barnstorming performance, and he was duly rewarded with a brace of tries. Having warmed the bench for quite some time, young Phepsi Buthelezi also relished the opportunity to play and got himself onto the try-scoring sheet as well. On the whole, this stunning show by the Cell C Sharks augurs well - not only for todays’ do-or-die confrontation, but also with an eye to a possible final in Italy next weekend.

BOK TO THE FUTURE! It hardly came as a surprise when Aphelele Fassi was named as one of 9 Cell C Sharks in the Springbok squad selected to do battle with the British & Irish Lions next month. As previously stated, the long-striding fullback is a world rugby megastar in the making and he has the data to prove it...

Judged by the Rainbow Cup SA player statistics up until now, Aphelele Fassi’s stats once again make for 'Fassi-nating' reading: Redefining the notion of an attacking fullback, he has beaten 20 defenders, gained 290 metres, made half a dozen clean breaks and carried the ball on 32 occasions. And, as usual, the 23-year-old athlete simply seems to be having a gas! “It’s credit to the coaching staff,” Fassi acknowledged when we spoke to him recently. “Coach Sean (Everitt) and his assistants give us the freedom us to express ourselves, so we are at liberty to go out there and play the brand of rugby that we love. “Personally, I’m just satisfied to have been fairly consistent, always trying to tick all the boxes. “Off the field it’s also great to spend time with each other as a team; there’s a really good spirit in the camp.” Last year, prior to the end of Super Rugby as we knew it, Fassi also set the South Island of New Zealand alight during the Cell C Sharks tour opener against the Highlanders in Dunedin. In what probably rates as his most memorable performance to date, the then 22-year-old whiz-kid ran in a brace of tries in the adventurous 42-20 win, and his second, at the death, was particularly breath-taking. The rangy fullback displayed dazzling skill to single-handedly scoop the ball from the deck, halfway out, and, with delightfully deceptive acceleration, simply glide through the half gap to score sensationally! “Fassi is an outstanding young talent,” coach Sean Everitt enthused at the time. “He’s still learning all along, yet the level of CELL C SHARKS VS VODACOM BULLS

Besides his attacking ability, he’s also solid under the high ball.” Born and bred at King William’s Town in the Eastern Cape, Fassi already emerged as a schoolboy prodigy on the paddock at Dale College and he attributes his wellrounded rugby education to the famous boys school. “Dale College certainly had a massive influence on my career as a rugby player,” he said. “The coaches and teaching staff at Dale played a massive role in developing me both as a rugby player and as a person. “As a kid, I always looked up at Israel Dagg, the former All Black and Crusaders star. “Dagg, who also played both wing and 12 CELL C SHARKS VS VODACOM BULLS

fullback, represented the type of player I wanted to become; he was versatile, full of energy, had a great kicking game and read the game well. “I loved his goosestep!” After school, Fassi wasted no time to force his way into the Cell C Sharks Currie Cup mix in 2018, ran in a try on debut and earned his first Premier Division winners’ medal at age 20! And, now, the Cell C Sharks’ sensation at fullback is fizzing to don the coveted green and gold, as South Africa is gearing up for the highly anticipated series against Alun Wyn Jones’ pride of Lions.

PERFORMANCE-DRIVEN THE CELL C SHARKS PRIDE THEMSELVES ON BEING A PERFORMANCE-DRIVEN TEAM, AND THE PERFORMANCE OF THEIR INDIVIDUAL PLAYERS IN THE RAINBOW CUP SA CERTAINLY SUPPORTS THAT NOTION... Individual Cell C Sharks players feature prominently amongst the top performers in the maiden edition of the Rainbow Cup SA competition.

The Durban-based outfit’s top performer thus far has been fullback Aphelele Fassi. At the time of writing, the 23-year-old whiz-kid’s individual stats read as follows: • • • •

Cell C Sharks’ captain Lukhanyo Am is also high up on the rankings with turnovers won (4) and offloads (5). Reniel Hugo, courtesy of his hat-trick against the Stormers at Newlands, and Kerron van Vuuren feature among the top try-scorers with three tries apiece, while Curwin Bosch has racked up 38 points, which is just one point shy of top scorer Morné Steyn’s tally of 39. Significantly, Springbok skipper Siya Kolisi, despite limited game time to date, has managed 43 tackles and won three turnovers, thus placing him, too, amongst the competition’s top performers. MAJOR MATCHUP

LOUW VS HENDRICKS Since stepping into the void at inside centre, following André Esterhuizen’s departure to Harlequins last year, Marius Louw has injected loads of oomph to the Cell C Sharks back division - putting in telling tackles and being specifically industrious at the breakdown. Having honed his rugby-playing ability at the famous Grey College in Bloemfontein, Louw switched from flanker to centre upon his arrival at The Sharks Academy in 2014, and he hasn’t looked back since. The 25-year-old has brought the hard-nosed approach of back-row play to his midfield game and is a key player for the Cell C Sharks in today’s critical clash. Considered as one of the unlucky players not to have made the Springbok squad for the series against the British & Irish Lions, Cornal Hendricks has reportedly not been selected as the heart condition that had kept him sidelined for a few years led to a litigation issue with SA Rugby, which first needs to be resolved. Not an original centre either, Hendricks was shifted from wing, where he’d played 12 tests for the Springboks from 2014 to 2015, to the midfield by Bulls coach Jake White, and the move has been nothing short of spectacular. Hendricks’ forceful and elusive presence at inside centre assisted the Pretoria-based franchise to clinch both the Super Rugby Unlocked and Currie Cup championships.
