EPCR WELCOME MESSAGE A warm welcome to this Round 1 match in the 2023/24 EPCR Challenge Cup in what promises to be another compelling season as we acknowledge two key additions to our suite of blue-chip commercial partners. In a further hugely positive development, the Tbilisi-based Black Lion are the first Georgian club to compete in the EPCR Challenge Cup, while the Hollywoodbets Sharks from Durban are also appearing in the tournament for the first time. So, as the competition extends its reach to Georgia, the 2023/24 season will see 18 clubs in three pools play four pool stage rounds, followed by four knockout stage rounds, culminating in the 2024 final at London’s state-of-the-art Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Friday, 24 May. The four highest-ranked clubs from each pool will qualify for the Round of 16, and to make the quest for silverware even more demanding, four clubs from the Investec Champions Cup will also qualify for the EPCR Challenge Cup knockout stage. The EPCR Challenge Cup provides a whole new, well, ‘challenge’, and first up the Hollywoodbets Sharks host Section Paloise from the city of Pau in the southwest of France. Generally known as just ‘Pau’, they have proven to be a surprise package in the French Top 14 this season. In fact, Pau briefly went top of the table following a resounding 30-6 win against Stade Francais a fortnight ago.

The Hollywoodbets Sharks take a break from their URC commitments this week, as they kick off their EPCR Challenge Cup campaign against French Top 14 outfit, Pau… Results might not have gone the way of the Hollywoodbets Sharks during the early stages of the Vodacom United Rugby Championship. However, under the tutelage of the highly experienced John Plumtree, the Durbanbased franchise have embarked on a bold new journey of expansive rugby, which is taking time, and plenty of hard work, to manifest itself within the Hollywoodbets Sharks’ setup. Although the new venture has high-risk written all over it, the challenge is the inspiration, and the men in black and white have already showed glorious glimpses of what can be achieved once every little detail falls into place. One detail that has to improve following the disappointing trip to Pretoria last Saturday is set-piece authority.

Both the scrums and lineouts need to provide a solid platform from which Plumtree’s charges can launch their new attacking approach, and apart from the opening salvoes at Loftus Versfeld, that did not materialise against the Bulls. The Hollywoodbets Sharks were certainly hampered in this regard through the late withdrawal of promising young lock, Emile van Heerden, which adversely affected their rhythm at lineout time. Commitment is another aspect that strangely appeared to have gone walkabout in Pretoria, and mentally the boys have done heaps of soul-searching over the past few days. The Hollywoodbets Kings Park faithful can rest assured that it will be a different beast of a home team taking to the field today.

They did suffer a 13-36 loss at the hands of Toulon last weekend, but are still sitting pretty in fourth spot on the Top 14 standings, and are a mere two championship points adrift of leaders, Racing 92. It should therefore prove to be an extremely interesting contest in The Shark Tank this afternoon. Home fixtures, of course, are precious commodities in the Challenge Cup, and as such the Hollywoodbets Sharks will be intent on securing the win, and, if possible, maximum points from today’s encounter.

BOTH THE SCRUMS AND LINEOUTS NEED TO PROVIDE A SOLID PLATFORM.. Next Sunday they head up to Bloemfontein for what will invariably prove to be a most challenging away assignment against the Cheetahs. Two more pool matches follow early in the new year, at home against Oyonax, also from France, on January 13, and the following week against Dragons in Newport, Wales. The Round of 16 commences on April 5, 2024, followed by the quarter-finals a week later. The semi-finals will take place during the first week of May and the final contested on May 24 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, home of Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur in north London, UK.

Even an acclaimed legend like Australia’s David Campese has described the Hollywoodbets Sharks and Springbok centre as a next-level, “world-class operator”. Like Campese, who could dazzle fans with his supreme skills, which bordered on rugby artistry, Am possesses attributes of sheer greatness too. He always seems to have all the time in the world to work his magic with the ball, and, even without the ball, Am’s anticipation and work-rate are second to none. His prescience and selflessness also transcend that of an ordinary sportsman, and this class quality led directly to the iconic moment of Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan, and South Africa’s first try in a RWC final. Am gathered, at full speed, a stab kick by Makazole Mapimpi and, with one, swift movement, despite an open goal-line beckoning merely metres away, offloaded to Mapimpi on his outside to run in the simplest of tries. Thirty-year-old Am’s extraordinary exploits on the rugby paddocks of he world have not only bagged him a World Cup winner’s medal, but he has also tasted series success in the Rugby Championship and against the British & Irish Lions.

Sadly, a knee injury sustained against Argentina, in Buenos Aires on the eve of RWC 2023, deprived Am of the opportunity to share in the Springboks’ most recent triumph on the global stage. He was eventually flown across to France as an injury replacement, ironically enough for Mapimpi, who had suffered a fractured cheekbone in the pool match against Tonga, but, due to the campaign having already reached the playoff stages, Am never saw any action. It was particularly frustrating for the Bok talisman having to watch from the sidelines as South Africa defeated New Zealand in the pulsating final, in Paris, just over a month ago.

That, in itself, has not been the easiest of tasks over the past few weeks, as the boys are adapting to a whole new playing style under recently returned head coach, John Plumtree.

It hasn’t been the most fortunate of seasons for Lukhanyo Am, yet he is fizzing to end 2023 on a high for the Hollywoodbets Sharks.

Am has acknowledged that, as a group, the Hollywoodbets Sharks are focussing on how they need to grow and that, once the individuals sharpen up and start operating as a unit, this team will become extremely lethal.

Back in Durban, Am has swiftly regained the necessary match fitness to not only regain his rightful berth at outside centre, but to also attain the captaincy of the Hollywoodbets Sharks.

FROM THE CITY OF ‘PATOU’ MAJOR MATCHUP

WILLIAMS VS DAUBAGNA Grant Williams will be expected to inject much-needed attacking flair from the base of the Hollywoodbets Sharks’ scrum against Pau today. Equally at home on the wing, Williams was ‘winging’ it for South Africa at RWC 2023, zeroing in for a brace of tries against Romania and setting the clash with Scotland alight with a stupendous 60 m-break off the bench. The 27-year-old also turned out on the Springbok wing against Tonga.

‘Patou’ means ‘a big, friendly dog’ in French and was the nickname of Robert Paparemborde, legendary Tricolores prop and the most famous player produced by Pau… Pau was the third major French city, after Le Havre and Bordeaux, to feature the sport of rugby. Did you know: *

Section Paloise, or simply ‘Pau’, was officially established in 1899, although the earliest accounts of rugby in Pau date back to 1890.

Pau have played their home games at the Stade du Hameau since 1990. Previously, from 1910, the Stade de la Croix du Prince served as their home base, but financial constraints necessitated a change of venue.

Even though the last couple of decades were rather lean, with Pau regularly moving in and out of the elite French championship, they have won the Top 14 on three occasions, in 1928, 1946 and 1964, while they were also crowned EPCR Challenge Cup champions in 2000.

In the 1964 Top 14 final, which Pau won 13-0 against a powerful Béziers outfit, their French international centre, Jean Piqué, famously wore a picture on his jersey of his late wife, who had just died of leukaemia.

More recent national representatives include Imanol Harinordoquy, Damien Traille, Lionel Beauxisor and Antoine Hastoy, while New Zealanders Conrad Smith and Colin Slade also turned out for Pau.

Sam Whitelock, the most-capped All Black of all time, has just joined the club, which is captained by his brother, Luke Whitelock.

Pau’s most famous son is the late Robert Paparemborde, who started out as a centre for Pau in 1968 but ended up propping the French scrum in 55 tests, including triumphant Five Nations campaigns in 1977, 1981 and 1983.

Paparemborde, who played for France against Natal at Hollywoodbets Kings Park in 1975 and 1980, also scored a record eight tries for the Tricolores as a front-rower. HOLLYWOODBETS SHARKS VS SECTION PALOISE 31

Pau scrumhalf Thibault Daubagna is a seasoned campaigner for the French outfit, boasting 230 caps for Section Paloise. The 29-year-old has regularly done duty in the Pau No 9 jumper over the past decade, and previously also represented France U20 and the French Barbarians. Daubagna was a member of the champion French U20 side that went unbeaten to clinch the Six Nations Under 20s Championship, including the Grand Slam, in 2014.
