To Make A Positive Impact

It’s no secret that helping others and contributing to one’s community through positive, impactful action makes people feel good. For students, spending some time volunteering can be especially beneficial in various ways. 1. CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR COMMUNITY Volunteering allows students to give their time and talents to support a cause that’s important to them. 2. REDUCE STRESS Volunteering has been shown to help reduce and counteract the adverse effects of stress and anxiety. We feel better when we help others, make a positive impact, and become a part of something bigger than ourselves. 3. EXPAND YOUR NETWORK By volunteering students can expand their overall network of diverse mentors and peers. Their new connections - volunteers, employees, board members — can potentially become a mentor or open up some professional doors for in the future.

4. BUILD YOUR RESUME Students are doing volunteer work to set themselves apart in a stack of applicants. Even when students have top grades and test scores, employers may want to see relevant work experience on a resume. The good news is that it doesn’t matter if it comes from paid or unpaid work! Service-learning offers skills-building opportunities while improving the lives of others. The hands-on learning inherent to volunteer work gives students the competitive edge needed to enter the job market. 5. EXPAND YOUR PERSPECTIVE If you only surround yourself with people in your bubble, it can be hard to understand how complex your community is. Volunteering can be a great way to expand your perspective and see the challenges in other parts of your community to increase empathy and gratitude.

Making an Impact Through Community Service Community Service Is Not a Line Item

In a time when college admissions can feel like a competition, it’s easy to think every activity needs to “look good” on an application. Community service often falls into that trap—reduced to logging hours or checking a requirement. The truth is, most colleges do not require community service. And the real value of service has very little to do with how it appears on a résumé. The true value is the impact on your community—and on you.

Why This Matters Right Now

During adolescence, your ability to understand other people’s perspectives is growing, along with your desire to find a place where you feel valued and connected. This is one of the most vital times to begin looking outside of yourself and contributing to others. As you move from childhood into adulthood, you are not just building a résumé. You are figuring out who you are and how you want to show up in the world. Research shows that helping others plays a direct role in that development. The parts of your brain involved in social connection are maturing, and you are more sensitive to the positive feelings that come from doing something meaningful. The psychology-based research on this is often connected to the concept of “mattering”: the feeling of being valued and having value to add. It is a fundamental human need, essential for well-being—and service is one of the most powerful ways to experience it.

Meaningful Service Starts with Genuine Interest

The most meaningful service does not come from a list of approved activities. It starts with what genuinely matters to your student.

A Simple Framework: Initiative, Impact, and Insight

If you are not sure where to start—or how to think about the service you are already doing—consider your involvement through three lenses: Initiative means you took action. Whether you started something new or stepped into a larger role, you did not wait to be told what to do. Impact is whether your efforts helped others in a meaningful way. Did what you did make a difference, even a small one? Insight is what you gained from the experience—how it shaped your perspective, your confidence, and your understanding of the world around you. These three lenses are useful not just for evaluating past service, but for guiding what comes next.

Finding Your Fit

Real service begins with awareness. What brings you joy? What genuinely interests you? Once you identify that, use what you are good at to meet a need in your community. A strong writer might help someone tell their story. A student who loves animals, sports, or music can find ways to give back through those interests. The possibilities are as varied as the students themselves. There is no “best” type of community service. What matters is that it feels important to you. When you are connected to what you are doing, you are more likely to stay involved, take initiative, and grow from the experience.

The Bigger Picture

A consistent contribution to a meaningful service activity can help admissions officers understand how you show up in the world and what you value. That is worth noting.

A student who loves art might bring creativity into a children’s hospital. Someone involved in a youth group might organize a mentoring project for younger students. One student refurbished donated computers for foster youth. Another created a reading program at a local shelter.

But more importantly, it helps you develop initiative, create impact, and gain insight. It builds a sense of purpose and direction—something that will carry you far beyond the college process and into whatever comes next.

These are not cookie-cutter volunteer hours. They are extensions of who each student already is—applied in a way that helps others.

This is not about padding an application. It is about becoming the kind of person who notices what needs to be done—and does it. That is a skill you will use in college, in your career, and in your life.

The key: try community service not because it looks impressive, but because it matters to you.

Jonathan Taylor

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Class of 2030 Volunteer at Bags of Hope

At Bags of Hope, I was involved as a Neighborhood Ambassador and Food Packing Volunteer. My job was to collect donations from my local neighborhood for our annual food drives. Most notably, our Back-to-School food drive. With those donations, I’d then work with a team of volunteers to pack “take home” food bags for students facing food insecurity in Cornelius/Huntersville/Charlotte and surrounding areas. I would totally recommend any high schooler to start volunteering. Volunteering offers benefits that go beyond simply completing community service hours for other clubs. It can help you develop leadership and organizational skills, help you create connections with others that are involved in your community, and most importantly, help you better understand the challenges that other people face on a daily basis.

Harriet Collins

Myers Park High School, Senior Volunteer at Nourish Up Food Pantry at First Presbyterian Church I served with Nourish Up, working oneon-one with community members in the food pantry and delivering groceries to community members in need all over Charlotte. My first time serving was with my mom and I was honestly quite nervous because I didn’t know how I would even help. Then, I helped my first family and it was a mom with her two children. I just clicked with that family, helping them pick out their groceries and just talking casually. That is my “why” to just be able to connect with families and grow in my understanding of others.

Shelby Leigh Stephens Randolph IB Middle School Volunteer at Roof Above

I participated in a local church mission trip through Myers Park United Methodist Church. As part of the experience, we volunteered with Roof Above, where we helped pack sanitary shower bags for people experiencing homelessness. Volunteering helped me realize that there is always a story behind every person we see. It made me think more about the people in our community and what they may be going through. If you ever get the opportunity to volunteer or participate in an experience like this, I think it is definitely worth trying. You can learn a lot about other people, your community, and yourself.

Andrew Turkovich

Weddington High School, Sophomore Volunteer with Fifty Fabulous Youth

Through the organization Fifty Fabulous Youth, I have had the opportunity to serve a number of local nonprofit organizations since middle school, focusing on bettering the lives of children in the Charlotte area. Some of the volunteer events I have participated include collecting coats for kids, and making testing kits for students at Title 1 schools. I have benefitted from serving and would recommend other high school students get involved in other volunteering opportunities because it feels good to support others in need in your community, gain perspective on the lives and situations of others, and obtain volunteer hours.
