Shalhevet is unique in Jewish education. We were looking for a place that demonstrated a love for Judaism, a love for Torah learning, and an ability to be spiritually engaged, and that’s what we found here. The school also offers student support without additional cost to the parents, which provides enrichment to students of all needs. The quality of education, and the chance to be surrounded by true Modern Orthodox role models, both men and women, is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for our children. DR. Contributing to Shalhevet has been such holy work for my husband and me. My in-laws were Holocaust survivors, and after the war, they couldn’t emphasize enough the importance of supporting Jewish education. I feel honored to have been able to give, and I’m really humbled by the nachas it’s brought into our lives. Seeing these children go out into the world, make a difference in the Jewish world, and knowing that Shalhevet brought them closer to the Jewish community—it’s exciting, and I’m so proud. MRS. ...and we also think outside the box At Shalhevet, Jewish learning is part of our students’ personal growth. This isn’t a race to memorize dates or laws. It’s about bringing the joy of Torah and Judaism into their lives.

Our groundbreaking Lahav curriculum, developed in-house at Shalhevet, is based on the premise that 100% of our students should fall in love with learning Torah. The Lahav curriculum has been adopted by fourteen other day schools around the globe. We are thrilled to share our methodology and philosophy of joyful and engaged Judaism with tomorrow’s Jewish leaders.

Start with “Why?” “Torah learning is not something you do only because you’re required to. Sure, it’s a mitzvah to learn Torah. Shalhevet checks the boxes... A lifelong dedication to Judaism can’t just be created in the classroom, so we don’t stop when the bell rings. Our Mashgichim Ruchani’im engage our students in school and out. Students learn at teacher’s homes and enjoy Melava Malkas, challah baking, and pickup basketball with teachers and staff. Learning groups allow our students to explore Mussar and Chassidut in individualized settings. And our Mashgichim are always checking in on students one-on-one, keeping tabs on the well-being of each student.

...and we also think outside the box We want our students to live their studies, and be prepared for the careers of the future. Our students study chemistry at the Hyperion water treatment plant, and explore environmental science at San Pedro’s Marine Mammal Rescue Center. We offer 3D Print Modeling and circuit construction, and our Advanced Computer Science students build code to calculate the complex Jewish calendrical system.

Shalhevet Team 6000, our 40-student robotics team, competes in the highest tier of the US FIRST Robotics Competition. Our team faces unique challenges in participating in FIRST, not least because many competitions take place on Shabbos. In the true spirit of invention, our students have found ways to succeed. We partner with an LA public school to operate our robot during Saturday competitions, while enjoying an on-site Shabbaton, an experience enhanced by the initiative and leadership required to make the team work. Shalhevet Team 6000 is the only Orthodox robotics team in the US FIRST competition.

Inspired by his research, Max continued tackling the problem as a Freshman at Washington University, working with the St. Louis Criminal Justice Ministry to empower individuals returning to their communities after prison. Max now studies psychology and education, and hopes to use his studies to create meaningful change in the future.

They compare American Revolution-era newspapers to modern CNN and Fox News coverage, and travel to Gettysburg to experience our history. Town Hall is a hallmark of the Shalhevet Just Community experience. In a world where we are increasingly fractured and students are glued to their phones and screens, we are reclaiming conversation. Every week, students, teachers, and administrators come together to discuss everything from the school dress code, to the ethics of genetic engineering, to the moral lessons we can take from the latest Marvel film. In Town Hall, everyone speaks on an equal footing. The Student Passport We have created a Student Passport model to make sure that no one falls through the cracks. Whether or not students have a formal IEP, we work directly with our students to create individualized plans providing what they need. Shalhevet Student Passports focus on each student’s strengths, identifying how we can help our students in all subjects, as well as classroom functions, testing procedures, and homework strategies. And our Student Support staff check in regularly with students, teachers, and parents to make sure we are doing our best to help you.

We begin with 10th grade advisement, and our Juniors meet with College Admissions Directors. Personal workshops ensure our Seniors create unique, effective essays; students also write applications together in after-school “Appy Hours.” We offer a First Generation College Night, Financial Aid night, and special advisory sessions on subjects like Jewish life on campus, visiting colleges, and work-life balance at school. Above all, College Guidance provides strong emotional support for students and parents. Don’t stress—we are here for you every step of the way.

Israel Guidance Learning in Israel provides a chance for our alumni to make their Shalhevet education a reality of life beyond our school walls. Like College Guidance, Israel Guidance focuses on individual needs. We meet frequently with students to assess their goals and find the right program. As a result, 80% of our graduates apply to and study at more than 30 diverse institutions in Israel.

A Philosophy of Self-Worth Your rejections do not define you; your reactions do. Embracing disappointments promotes internal resilience. College Guidance applies this philosophy to the core development of our students. Many seniors post rejection letters on our “Wall of Shame”—and each letter is quickly covered with notes of encouragement from fellow students.

Transitioning to high school can seem intimidating. Our goal is to make the entire process easy and enjoyable for both parents and incoming students. Our application process boils down to one thing: Getting to know you, as you get to know us. We hope all prospective students will join us for a day at Shalhevet to get a taste of what we’re all about. The start of 9th grade is a fully guided process. At our threeday orientation, we offer strategies for communicating with teachers, study skills, and new social situations. Our transition team meets with your family to make sure your intake is going smoothly. You’ll have the chance to speak with our support staff and faculty, getting to know the people who will be part of your high school experience.

What Does Shalhevet Look for in a Student? We seek students who will enhance our community with inquisitiveness and Menschlechkeit.
