DEAR FRIENDS,
When the world is upside down and the great globe itself teeters on its axis, can we take comfort in a return to basics: respect, empathy, communication, listening, loving, and laughing?
I’m probably just naïve enough to believe that human kindness can save the earth, and I don’t think that Shakespeare was a cynic in that regard. Here at Shakespeare & Company, we strive to uphold the principles that are embedded in our mission as they relate to connection, language, and community. And these days we’re feeling a renewed urgency to highlight the best of humankind through live theater.
We lost our Founder, Tina Packer, at the beginning of this year and we truly miss her. Tina seemed to time her exit as a challenge to take up the cause of pursuing authentic human truths through storytelling. We have every intention of picking up that gauntlet and carrying the mantle forward.
Our summer season kicks off with a beautifully rich language play, Fireflies by Matthew Barber (of Enchanted April renown) – a Texas tale of late-life romance, followed by the Shakespearean romantic comedy Twelfth Night in the Arthur Waldstein Amphitheatre.
Flying around inside the Tina Packer Playhouse will be the return of Circus & the Bard: The Next Chapter, an intersection of circus and Shakespeare. Our popular Plays in Process series also returns with a series of readings held outdoors at the Rose Footprint Theatre. Shake It Up: The Remix, will be back for a third year with a revamped set list. The intimate modern classic, Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune by Terence McNally, will appear in the Elayne P. Bernstein Theatre. Hamlet, the ultimate examination of the human condition, lands resonantly and timelessly on the Tina Packer Playhouse stage, followed by Midsummer Dreamers, a reimagined two-hander with aerial acts and acrobatics. Rounding out the summer season will be the very funny hitman comedy The Norwegians, and the wonderful festival Celebrating Jewish Plays—with Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice delightfully capping our year.
At this writing, the Artemis II mission and its capsule dubbed Integrity is hurtling toward splashdown. Integrity is our lodestar here, and while the world sometimes seems to be swimming in acute absurdity, we continue to look for small ways to elevate human values. To that end, we plan on telling some really good tales this coming season, and we’ll be very grateful if you can join us for the ride!

Frankie, a guarded waitress, and Johnny, an earnest short-order cook, work together at a Manhattan diner. After their first date, they find themselves in bed—and talking through the night.
Both funny and achingly honest, Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune explores loneliness, resilience, and the possibility that, late in the night, love may be waiting.

THE EDUCATION PROGRAM
Shakespeare & Company’s Education Program is one of the most extensive theater-in-education initiatives in the Northeast.
