As we reflect on the 2024–2025 school year, we do so with deep gratitude, pride, and optimism for the future of St. Francis de Sales School. This past year was one marked by meaningful milestones, outstanding accomplishments, and continued momentum that will shape our community for generations to come.

In 2025, we were honored to celebrate the 70th anniversary of St. Francis de Sales School. Since opening our doors, more than 10,000 graduates have carried the values, faith, and academic foundation they received here into the world. This remarkable legacy was joyfully commemorated with a special Mass in the St. Francis Chapel, bringing together alumni, parents, students, faculty, and friends of the school. It was a powerful reminder that while our traditions run deep, the spirit of St. Francis remains vibrant and alive in every generation.

We also celebrate the continued strength of the Our Faithful Loyalty Campaign. With nearly $16 million in capital commitments, this campaign is a testament to the confidence our community has in the mission and future of St. Francis de Sales School. These commitments will have a lasting impact, ensuring that we remain well-positioned to provide exceptional opportunities for our students now and in the years ahead. While much work needs to be done to achieve our goal and the desired impact on our students, we are incredibly grateful for all those who have already participated. Excellence in academics remains at the heart of our mission. This year, 17 of the 20 Advanced Placement exams offered at St. Francis de Sales scored above the global average — a remarkable testament to the strength of our curriculum and the dedication of our students. In addition, six of our AP teachers were selected from thousands of educators worldwide to serve as AP exam readers, an extraordinary honor that reflects the expertise and professionalism of our faculty and the academic rigor present in our classrooms each day.

The 2024–2025 school year was one of extraordinary success for our students, both inside and outside the classroom. Our Knights experienced one of the most successful athletic years in school history, highlighted by seven district championships, three regional championships, and state tournament appearances in nine sports. These achievements reflect not only athletic excellence, but also the discipline, teamwork, and character that define our student-athletes.

None of this would be possible without the dedication of our faculty and staff, the support of our families, and the unwavering generosity of our alumni and friends. Your commitment to St. Francis de Sales School allows us to honor our past while boldly embracing the future.

‘Our Faithful Loyalty’ Raises $16+ Million

Fundraising continued throughout the fiscal year to generate revenues for facility and campus upgrades. As of this publication date, the “Our Faithful Loyalty” campaign has generated nearly $16 million dollars in commitments. We are extremely pleased with the positive response to the campaign from our alumni and friends, but there is still much work to be done to complete the project.

The ambitious and transformative project will reshape the Bancroft and Parkside campus and enhance the student experience inside and outside the classroom.

Driving the need for investment is the increase in 7th and 8th grade enrollment, which has grown from 25 a decade ago to 120 students today - a 380% increase.

This increase necessitates new academic spaces to accommodate the growing population. To clear the way for these new academic spaces, St. Francis intends to relocate many current athletic spaces into a new athletics complex between St. Francis and Gesu Church.

The project includes three phases:

Phase I includes an athletics complex with new locker room space, an athletic training facility, a new, larger fitness center, indoor hockey practice area with synthetic ice, wrestling room, concessions, and restrooms for home events at LaValley Stadium.

Phase II will increase academic space in the existing building by converting areas currently devoted to athletics into classrooms. Additionally, Phase II will create a new home for St. Francis Musical Theatre, a crown jewel of our school.

Phase III will include the addition of a 40-yard indoor athletic fieldhouse to be available for year-round practices, training, marching band, physical education classes, alumni and school events, and more.

The SFS board of trustees unanimously voted to approve the start of Phase I which will begin this spring. Phases II and III will follow in the near future as the campaign progresses.

Mindful of escalating costs in the marketplace, St. Francis is advised by a group of external experts, including The Collaborative, The Lathrop Co., and other SFS friendly construction professionals, in cost management.

Summer A Summer Tradition at Camp DeSales

Each summer, Camp DeSales provides an engaging and welcoming experience for our future Knights. We host a variety of camps for incoming 7th and 8th graders, as well as a dedicated camp for incoming 9th graders, offering students the opportunity to build friendships,

grow in confidence, and become familiar with the St. Francis community. Camp DeSales is a wonderful way for students to connect with their brother Knights, develop school spirit, and begin the school year feeling prepared and excited.

Each year, our St. Francis alumni proudly return to campus to welcome students on the first day of school, continuing a cherished tradition rooted in Knight pride and community. This year, more than 60 alumni Knights gathered to greet our students as

they began a new academic year, offering encouragement, familiar smiles, and a powerful reminder of the lifelong bond that connects all members of the St. Francis family.

The Class of 1974 Celebrates 50 Years

The Class of 1974 returned to St. Francis de Sales School to celebrate their 50th reunion, marking a milestone filled with fellowship, gratitude, and shared memories. Alumni gathered for a weekend of celebration that included a reception in downtown Toledo, a round of golf, and time back on campus for Mass and a barbecue. The reunion was a joyful reflection of the enduring bonds formed at St. Francis and the lifelong connection alumni share with their alma mater.

Knights from the Beginning

Members of the Class of 1959, St. Francis de Sales School’s first four-year graduating class, returned to campus to celebrate their reunion and a remarkable legacy of Knighthood. Alumni and spouses gathered to celebrate Mass together before sharing a class dinner, reflecting on the bonds formed more than six decades ago. As Day One students, these men helped establish the strong foundation of faith, tradition, and excellence that continues to define St. Francis today.

Celebrating Outstanding Faculty

At the opening school Mass, Mr. Scott Secrest ’95 was honored with the Don Kober Faculty Award, recognizing his outstanding classroom performance, dedication to the St. Francis mission, and service to our school community. This prestigious award is made

possible through a generous endowment established by Don Kober, a beloved former faculty member and coach, celebrating a legacy of excellence and commitment to students.

The Class of 2026 came together for Junior Pillars Day, a meaningful time of prayer, worship, and reflection. Guided by our Campus Ministry team, students reflected on their experiences at St. Francis de Sales and looked ahead to the next chapter of their journey as upperclassmen, strengthening their faith, community, and connection to the school’s mission.

Interacting Through Service

In the spirit of Service Above Self, our Interact Club partnered with the Toledo Rotary to host students from Glendale-Fieldbach Elementary School for Zoo Day 2024. Knights spent the day engaging with younger students, sharing fun, learning, and community, while putting their commitment to service into action.

Reunion Weekend

Alumni from the Classes of 1984, 1994, 2004, and 2014 returned to St. Francis de Sales for a joyful Reunion Weekend, filled with laughter, memories, and reconnecting with old friends. Guests celebrated together on campus and in smaller gatherings with their individual classes.

Global Salesian

The annual Global Salesian Leadership Symposium brought students together for a day of inspiration, connection, and leadership growth. Tom Seeman ’77, the keynote speaker, shared his inspiring life story, offering insights and encouragement that highlighted the values of faith, service, and leadership.

Veterans Day RUN

Hosted by the SFS Student Council, the Veterans Day Run brought our community together in support of a meaningful cause. Proceeds from the event benefited the Toledo Chapter of Veterans Matter, reflecting our students’ commitment to service, leadership, and making a positive impact beyond campus.

Presidential Gala

The annual Presidential Gala is our signature fundraising event that brings the St. Francis de Sales community together in support of tuition assistance. This year’s Casino Knights theme added an evening of excitement and elegance, while raising over $290,000 to help ensure a St. Francis education remains accessible to students and families.

United in Faith and Sportsmanship

The hockey teams of St. Francis de Sales School and St. John’s Jesuit gathered for a shared Mass at the historic St. Francis de Sales Chapel, celebrating unity, faith, and sportsmanship. The Mass was presided over by Fr. James Sand, SJ, and concelebrated by Fr. Alan Zobler, OSFS ’97, Fr. Geoff Rose, OSFS, Fr. Tim McIntire, OSFS, and Fr. Chris Hudgin, OSFS ’71, serving as a powerful reminder that while competition takes place on the ice, a shared faith and brotherhood unite the Knights and the Titans as one community.

Advent Book Drive

During the Advent season, the Knights embraced the spirit of giving by collecting more than 330 books for students at Gesu Catholic School. A group of St. Francis de Sales students delivered the books in person, sharing the joy of reading and spreading holiday cheer through service and generosity.

The annual Mother–Son Dance, themed Movie Knights, was a true blockbuster hit. The evening offered students and their mothers time to enjoy together while celebrating a beloved St. Francis tradition.

Our hockey players volunteered with Gliding Stars, an adaptive skating program that empowers individuals with disabilities. The Knights shared their love of skating while inspiring joy and confidence in the participants.

Presidents’ Day Lunch

The annual Presidents’ Day Luncheon offers an inspiring afternoon where speakers share their insights on leadership, networking, and in some cases, the way St. Francis de Sales shaped their paths.

Tim Croak, CEO & Founder of Croak Capital; Bruce Douglas ’06, President of The Douglas Company; and John Hobbs III ’87, Toledo City Councilman, reflected on their experiences and encouraged students and guests to lead with purpose and build meaningful connections.

Celebrity Wait Knight

Our annual Celebrity Wait Knight at Mancy’s Steakhouse was an incredible evening of fun and community. Hosted by the Chappuis Society, attendees came together to celebrate, connect, and support the programs that enrich life at St. Francis de Sales.

Students in Fr. Zobler's math class celebrated Pi Day, Fr. Zobler’s favorite holiday, with engaging math activities and a variety of pies. The event combined learning and enjoyment, offering a memorable way to explore the joy of numbers.

Concert Band, Singing Blue, and excerpts from the cast of the spring musical, Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn.

Our 19th annual Knight of the Vine event, held at The Real Seafood Company, was an extraordinary evening of generosity and celebration, raising just over $270,000 in support of our Tuition Assistance Fund. This premier wine auction and dinner brought together friends and supporters for an unforgettable night featuring rare and highly sought-after wines, exquisite gourmet dining, and exclusive travel packages offered during the live auction.

Students gather in the school chapel to celebrate Holy Thursday, including the meaningful tradition of foot washing. The liturgy offers students and faculty an opportunity to reflect on service, humility, and the example of Christ’s love.

The St. Francis de Sales Musical Theatre Program delivered an unforgettable production of Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn. From auditions in December to the final curtain in May, our talented cast and dedicated crew brought passion and energy to every performance, showcasing the creativity and commitment of our students.

In May, St. Francis de Sales School celebrated the retirement of Maureen DeLaney, marking the conclusion of an extraordinary career. For more than 30 years, Maureen has been a steady, passionate, and deeply caring presence, leaving an immeasurable impact on students, faculty, families, and the entire St. Francis community.

The Senior Steps Tradition

After completing their final exams, the Class of 2026 celebrated a cherished St. Francis tradition by walking down the Senior Steps for the first time as upperclassmen. This milestone marked their official transition to senior status, symbolizing growth, and the exciting journey ahead.

Each summer, St. Francis de Sales School partners with the Toledo Lucas County Public Library for the Reading Buddies program. Our students volunteer at library branches throughout the city, engaging with K–3 students and fostering a love of reading while supporting literacy in the community.

The annual Fr. Healy Memorial Golf Outing at Highland Meadows Golf Club brought together alumni for a day of camaraderie, competition, and community. Proceeds from the outing support tuition assistance, helping provide opportunities for students to thrive and continue the St. Francis tradition of excellence. A Year to Remember

Baseball

The Baseball team enjoyed an impressive postseason run, capturing the District Championship and advancing to the Regional Final to finish as Regional Runner-Up. Consistent play, strong pitching, and timely hitting propelled the Knights through tournament competition and highlighted the program’s continued tradition of excellence.

Basketball

Boys Basketball delivered a historic championship season, capturing both District and Regional titles and advancing to the OHSAA State Final Four. The District Championship marked the program’s first in 30 years, while the Regional title was its first in 42 years — a remarkable achievement for our Knights!

Cross Country

Cross Country achieved an outstanding season, claiming both CHSL and District Championships while demonstrating exceptional depth across the roster. Eleven runners — Colton Adolph, Sam Arquette, William Dwyer, Jameson Heck, Brennan Higgins, Grady Kling, Owen Little, Josh Sandvik, Kale Seymour, Nathan Stubleski, and Wil White — qualified for the OHSAA State Championship meet.

Football

Football advanced to the second round of the OHSAA State Playoffs, capping a season defined by resilience and steady progress. With a renewed focus on development and culture, the Knights are building the program back to prominence while continuing to honor its proud tradition.

Golf

Golf captured the District Championship and advanced to the OHSAA State Tournament as a team — the program’s first state qualification since 2012. Jack Julius, Nick Miller, Collin Paris, Jack Schoen, and Thomas Woycik represented the Knights at the state level following a season defined by consistency, focus, and composure under pressure.

Hockey

Hockey continued its tradition of excellence with an exceptional season, capturing both NHC and Regional Championships and advancing to the State Final Four. Under the steady leadership of Coach Chris Varga, the program’s disciplined defense and postseason composure reflect a strong culture of accountability, development, and championship-level expectations that continue to position the Knights among the state’s elite.

Lacrosse

Lacrosse captured the District Championship after a strong, hard-fought season marked by speed, grit, and balanced play on both ends of the field. The Knights competed with confidence throughout the year, establishing themselves as one of the area’s most formidable teams and continuing the program’s upward momentum.

Soccer

Soccer captured both the CHSL and District Championships, putting together a strong and consistent season from start to finish. Solid defense, steady midfield play, and timely scoring helped the Knights control matches throughout the year and add another championship to the program’s history.

Swim & Dive

Swim & Dive delivered an outstanding season in the pool, highlighted by Max Buff’s State Championship performance in the 100 butterfly. The team’s depth and dedication were evident as seven athletes — Max Buff, Toby Dietrich, Landon Harman, Oliver Lazenby, Cole Peters, Benjamin Quisno, and Brady Sanchez — qualified for the OHSAA State Meet, showcasing the program’s continued excellence at the highest level of competition.

Tennis

Tennis saw a highlight this season with Nick Miller earning a spot in the OHSAA State Tournament. His State Qualifier achievement was a significant accomplishment for both Nick and the program, reflecting his hard work and dedication throughout the season.

Track & Field

Track & Field put together a strong season, winning both the CHSL and District Championships and sending five athletes — Sam Arquette, Jameson Heck, Owen Little, Kale Seymour, and Wil White — to the OHSAA State Meet. The group also made its mark indoors, as Arquette, Little, Seymour, and White teamed up to win the Indoor State Championship in the 4x800 relay, showing the depth and strength of the program from start to finish.

Water Polo

Water Polo continued to prove it is one of the strongest programs in the state, capturing a Regional Championship and powering its way to the State Final Four. With a great coaching staff as the leaders, the Knights have continued to build on their success year after year.

Over the past three years, our 7th and 8th-grade program has continued to demonstrate a strong sense of continuity and steady interest. In response to this ongoing demand, we increased our enrollment caps for the 2025–26 year, expanding both 7th grade and 8th grade. These intentional adjustments reflect our confidence in the direction of the junior high grades and our commitment to providing mission-based formation for students during these pivotal years. While overall enrollment numbers naturally vary from year to year, the continued interest in these grades affirms that families value the program and the role it plays in transforming boys into Christian gentlemen. To support this growth, we have strengthened

programming to ensure a smooth transition and a strong sense of belonging. Initiatives such as the Homeroom Mentors program and enhanced onboarding support help students acclimate quickly and feel connected from their earliest days at St. Francis. Additionally, we have enhanced staffing to provide more individualized attention and maintain a high level of academic and personal support. Together, these efforts underscore our dedication to a mission-driven and deeply formative environment rooted in the spirit of St. Francis de Sales.

The vast majority of school resources are directed toward Student Formation & School Experience, supporting academics, faith life, athletics, the arts, and the daily environment in which our young men grow and mature. Through Student Access & Scholarships, we ensure that a Salesian education remains within reach for families across a wide range of circumstances.

St. Francis de Sales High School Can Receive Up to $1,500 per Household with No Extra Money Out of Your Pocket

We are pleased to share an exciting opportunity with our Knight family and supporters. Ohio taxpayers can redirect a portion of their state income taxes to benefit St. Francis de Sales High School, making a meaningful impact while supporting our mission.

Through Ohio’s Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) program, individuals who contribute to an approved SGO may receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit on their Ohio income tax return—up to $750 per donor, or up to $1,500 for married couples filing jointly.

Here’s How it Works:

Single filers can donate up to $750, and married couples filing jointly can donate up to $1,500, to receive the dollar-for-dollar tax credit. Giving is easy and takes less than 10 minutes.

Thanks to the generosity of many, the Foundation continues to grow, providing scholarships and program support that open doors for young men. Gifts to the Foundation make a real difference today and help secure the school’s future.

Through careful stewardship of the Foundation’s resources, we work to maintain consistent support, even during financial fluctuations, so that the school can rely on this funding year after year. In the past year, the Foundation’s net assets increased to more than $23.3 million, enabling distributions of over $2.8 million to support our students and programs.

About the St. Francis de Sales Foundation

Established in 1991, the St. Francis de Sales High School Foundation exists to advance and sustain the mission of St. Francis de Sales School. The Foundation was created to provide reliable, long-term financial support through investment earnings and philanthropic contributions, including outright gifts, planned and deferred giving, estate gifts, and memorial donations.

The Foundation received designation as a Scholarship Granting Organization from the State of Ohio in May 2023 and again in April 2024. It currently oversees both annual (expendable) and endowment (permanent) funds, with the majority of resources supporting scholarships and tuition assistance. Additional funds are designated to strengthen specific academic and co-curricular programs.

Each year, Foundation distributions play a vital role in the school’s operating budget, funding scholarships, tuition assistance, academic programs, extracurricular opportunities, student support services, and faculty and staff initiatives. Through this support, the Foundation helps ensure that St. Francis de Sales remains a school of choice for young men while keeping a Catholic education accessible for families throughout the region.

A detailed summary of the Foundation’s financial activity for the 2024–2025 fiscal year, along with a listing of named endowed funds, can be found below and on the following pages.

New Funds

Phil and Debra Buerk Scholarship Fund - Established by Phil `64 and Debra Buerk, this endowed fund provides scholarship support to a Knight with demonstrated financial need.

Peggy L. Warnement 43612 Memorial Scholarship - Established by Patrick Warnment `99 and his wife, Elizabeth, in honor of Patrick’s mother, Peggy L. Warnament, this endowed fund provides tuition assistance, with preference given to students residing in the 43612 area (West Toledo).

Rev. Michael O. Brown Memorial Fund - Established through a gift from the estate of Rev. Michael O. Brown, this endowed named fund provides scholarship support in his honor. Rev. Brown was a former faculty member at St. Francis de Sales School.

Blessed Louis Brisson, founder of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, articulated a lifelong commitment to the education and moral formation of young men. Central to his vision was the sacred responsibility of safeguarding the faith and character of those entrusted to the care of the Oblates. For Blessed Brisson, the establishment and stewardship of schools were not merely academic endeavors, but an essential expression of this spiritual mission.

St. Francis de Sales School is deeply grateful to the benefactors whose generosity reflects and sustains this founding vision. The Blessed Louis Brisson Society ($1,000,000+)

This society honors Blessed Louis Brisson, founder of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales in 1876. Blessed Louis Brisson was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012. His legacy of faith, education, and service continues to inspire the mission of St. Francis de Sales School.

The Rev. Ronald W. Olszewski, OSFS ’62 Society ($500,000–$999,999)

This giving level recognizes the enduring leadership of Reverend Ronald W. Olszewski, OSFS ’62, who served as President of St. Francis de Sales School from 1978 to 2015 and as the fourth Principal from 1975 to 1990.

The Rev. Martin Lukas, OSFS Society ($250,000–$499,999)

Named in honor of Reverend Martin Lukas, OSFS, this society acknowledges his service as the fifth Principal of St. Francis de Sales School from 1990 to 2000.

This society commemorates Reverend Robert J. Healy, OSFS, who served as the third Principal of St. Francis de Sales School from 1967 to 1975.

The Oblates of St. Francis de Sales were founded in 1876 by Blessed Louis Brisson, with the encouragement of Sister Mary de Sales Chappuis. Established in France, the congregation expanded throughout Europe in the late 1800s, reaching Holland, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. In 1893, the Oblates arrived in the United States, first settling in New York and later in Wilmington, Delaware, where the first permanent Oblate community and school in the country were formed. The Oblates came to Toledo in 1943, accepting faculty roles at Central Catholic High School. As enrollment at Central Catholic continued to grow, Bishop George Rehring recognized the need for an all-boys Catholic high school in the Toledo community. Following the closure of St. John’s during the Depression in 1936, no such school existed, while two all-girls Catholic high schools were already serving the area. Bishop Rehring invited the Oblates to take on this important mission, and they agreed to build, maintain, and staff the new school. St. Francis de Sales High School welcomed its first class of 290 freshmen and sophomores on September 14, 1955.

Today, the Oblate presence remains an integral part of St. Francis de Sales School. Their continued commitment, passion, and devotion to the teachings of our patron saint continue to shape the spiritual life and mission of the school.
