Sewickley Public Library Designated Recipient of $500,000 Annual Gift On Tuesday, January 24, The Pittsburgh Foundation announced the second largest donation in their history, with Sewickley Public Library identified as one of the designated recipients. We are honored and humbled to be recognized by lifelong Sewickley resident, Mr. Raymond S. Suckling, as a place where he felt his wealth could positively impact the families of the Quaker Valley region. In the coming months, we intend to explore a new vision for the library that will reflect his generosity and love of community. We have recently welcomed a new development associate to our staff who will not only help to steward this gift from Mr. Suckling, but support it with the implementation of additional fundraising initiatives, to ensure the vibrancy of the library and its programs. 1
March 2018 Free Tax Preparation Assistance Coming in March Sewickley Public Library will work with VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) volunteers from Robert Morris University to offer free income tax preparation for qualifying individuals and families. To qualify your family income must be under $54,000 (individuals under $25,000). Dates and times are to be determined. Please check back.
Fourth Tuesday Book Group Presents Local Author Marie Benedict Join us on Tuesday, March 6 (not the 4th Tuesday!) at 7:00 PM in welcoming Marie Benedict as we discuss her newest book, Carnegie’s Maid. The Pi Day Pie Baking Contest is on Wednesday, March 14, 6:30 PM Come to the library bearing gifts of PIE! March 14th is Pi Day (3.14) and in celebration of this mathematical day, we will be holding a Pie Baking Contest. Last year weather made us take a break, but we will be back in 2018 better than ever! Bring in a pie that you’ve made and we’ll have an “expert” panel of guest judges pick the best one. Apple, blueberry, or bacon; all pie varieties are welcome! The winner will get bragging rights and a special pi(e) prize. This contest is open to All Ages. Please Register if you want to bake a pie as there are a limited number of spots available! Anna & Elsa Visit Sewickley Public Library Saturday, March 3, 2:00 – 3:30PM - Do you wanna build a snowman? Would you like to meet Anna & Elsa from Frozen? Then pop over to the SPL Children’s Department to make friends with Anna & Elsa, make crafts, and take photos with them. You may dress up in any prince or princess costume you like. Story Walk at Edgeworth Elementary Saturday, March 10, 10AM - Stories and activities are geared toward children ages 3-8. One of our librarians will be a reader. This literacy program is offered each spring and fall, to encourage a love of reading and books. It also serves as an opportunity for preschoolers to visit and become comfortable in the local elementary schools prior to entering kindergarten.
45th Annual Allegheny County Chess Tournament On Saturday, March 10 from 1:00 to 4:30 PM the Sewickley Public Library will host the 45th Annual Allegheny County Chess Tournament for children in Kindergarten through 8th grade. There will be two divisions: Junior division for Kindergarten—4th grade and Senior division for 5th—8th grade. All skill levels welcome! The first place winners from both divisions are invited to participate in a county-wide tournament. Please call or visit the library to register for the tournament. Grades K – 8.

This Month’s Display Cases In March, the library will host 2 exhibits that are part of the annual NCECA (The National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts ) conference, which takes place in Pittsburgh this year. In the display cases, from February 26 – March 17, we will host Shifting Perspectives, an exhibition which showcases work from a group residency focused on atmospheric firing. Artists shown: Fred Herbst, Julie Crosby, Trevor Dunn, Kenyon Hansen, Louise Harter, Doug Jeppesen, Liz Lurie, Dan Murphy, and Tara Wilson. Reception: Thu, Mar 15, 6-9 PM. From March 14-17, the tops of the magazine cases in the reference area will feature the work of artist Eliza Au in Ornament as Skeleton, an exhibition which explores binary relationships between ceramics and architecture; technology and craft; and structure and decoration.
