www.sewickleylibrary.org Pi Day Pie Baking Contest On Tuesday, March 14 at 6:30PM come to the library bearing gifts of PIE! March 14th is Pi Day (3.14) and in celebration of this mathematical day, we will be holding a Pie Baking Contest. This is our 7th Annual contest! Bring in a pie that you’ve made and we’ll have an “expert” panel of guest judges pick the best one. Apple, blueberry, or bacon; all pie varieties are welcome! The winner will get bragging rights and a special pi(e) prize. This contest is open to All Ages. Please Register if you want to bake a pie as there are a limited number of spots available!
ED Talks - Environmental Degradation and your Health Join us on Wednesday, March 29 at 7PM in welcoming back Edward F. Schroth. Environmental degradation of our air, water and land can be devastating on the social, economic and environmental ecosystems. Due to increasing environmental degradation and its impact of on both physical and mental health, the interrelationship between society and nature and the importance of sustainability brings concerns. We are all affected by environmental degradation, but it is the poor – especially women and children - who bear the main burden. Its consequences are visited on the homes, workplaces and our families in the forms of obesity, P.T.S.D. and juvenile delinquency. Attention will be given to the biophilia thesis - the notion that human beings have an innate affinity with nature, and the salutogenic effects of a closer relationship of Americans to reconnect to their ecosystems. We need nature in our lives more than ever today. Nature is not something optional, but absolutely essential to living a happy, healthy and meaningful life. Please Register.
Knitting for All Ages! This March we have two great opportunities for new knitters. The Children’s Department will hold a Knitting for Beginners for Grades 3-5 on Saturday, March 11, 1 - 3 PM. Check out page 4 for more information. Cathy Susko is starting a knitting club for all skill levels on Tuesday, March 7 at 10AM. Read more about this group on page 6.
SPL Stories Continued - March 2017 Love Your Library Month Results In September 2016 The Jack Buncher Foundation offered to public libraries throughout Allegheny County a fundraising challenge offering up $125,000 of matching money to be shared by all libraries. It was a first of a kind challenge for the county’s 47 public libraries.
The pool of money The Jack Buncher Foundation made available for the match was $125,000.
Almost $531,000 was raised by the 47 public libraries in September.
For each dollar raised, each library received .23 cents.
Sewickley Public Library and the Friends of the Sewickley Public Library raised $37,127. The top three fundraising libraries were: 1. Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh raised $84,691 and received $19,940 2. Western Allegheny Community Library raised $43,306 and received $10,196 3. Sewickley Public Library raised $37,128 and received $8,741 All 47 libraries received something from the pool. September 2016 was a big fundraising month for Sewickley Public Library and we were able to use all of these fundraising events to count toward our match:
The Friends of the Library Savoring Sewickley annual event kicked off ticket sales. Ticket sales, raffle ticket sales, and sponsorship donations made in September counted toward our fundraising effort.
The Library Board mailed reminder letters to donors in August urging them to make a donation in September if they hadn’t already made an earlier donation in the year. The Library Board also recognized September as Rita Crawford month as she announced her retirement. Donations made in honor of Mrs. Crawford contributed to our September fundraising.
The Pittsburgh Foundation’s Day of Giving was also held in September. Usually the Day of Giving is in May, but due to a technical difficulty it was rescheduled for September.
Memorial, Honor and unrestricted donations made throughout the month contributed to our September success, too.
We are so very grateful to all of our donors. We couldn’t have done it without you! Just about every dollar received by the library or the Friends of the Library was counted toward our fundraising success in September. In a press release, Mrs. Bernita Buncher, chair of The Jack Buncher Foundation, said, “Our community clearly demonstrated that a library is more than just books, it is a center for information, technology and learning that fuels educational and economic opportunity for residents of all abilities, skills and backgrounds.” Mrs. Buncher surprised all of the public libraries one more time in 2016 when she donated $5,000 from The Jack Buncher Foundation to each of the 47 public libraries in December. What did Sewickley Public Library do with all of the generous donations from our patrons and The Jack Buncher Foundation? Our librarians and staff continue to offer outstanding customer service, we provide advanced technology opportunities, we maintain our lovely historic landmark building, we provide a comprehensive collection and programming and more. The Sewickley Public Library is truly a community gem due to your generosity.

March 2017 Display cases will feature Doris Dumrauf (from February 17 – March 25). Dumrauf is an accomplished wildlife photographer and will be giving a talk entitled Create Your Own Backyard Wildlife Habitat on Wednesday, March 8 at 6:30PM. Learn how to attract wildlife to your yard and why native plants are crucial to this goal. As a nature photographer, Mrs. Dumrauf spends many hours in her back yard - a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat - and observes the web of life up close. After her talk, Mrs. Dumrauf will sign copies of her new book. Saturday, March 4 is the SPL Bruegger’s Saturday. Print a coupon from our website and 15% of your purchase will go towards the Friends of the Sewickley Public Library. What a yummy way to help the library! 8
