Annual SPL Chess Tournament The winners for the 2017 Sewickley Public Library Chess Tournament are: Junior 1st Will Fitzgerald nd Junior 2 Grant Castaldo st Senior 1 Dylan Fitzgerald Senior 2nd Collin Wang The first place winners will be moving on to the Allegheny County Chess Tournament in April. In an interesting twist, the 1st place winners in both divisions are brothers!! We wish the Fitzgerald brothers the best of luck at the tournament in April.

FOSPL Donor Appreciation Talk with Christine Tomana Poluszejko, owner of Eco-Land Designs Join us Thursday, April 6, 7PM. As a thank you to our donors, the Friends of the Library are hosting an evening with Christine Tomana Poluszejko, owner of Eco-Land Designs, where she will share her landscaping and gardening expertise. A sale of fine garden and landscape books will be offered beginning at 6 PM. Please email a message/photo to Christine ecolanddesigns@gmail.com prior to the evening about a specific landscape and/or hardscape project, which may be discussed; you’ll be eligible for a consultation at your home!
The Peep Show Peep! Peep! Get creative with Peeps. Design a scene from a book starring those saccharine cuties. "Mary Peepins"? "The Lightning Peep"? "Fear and Sugar in Las Vegas"? Library patrons will vote on their favorite and the designer of the Peep Show with the most votes will win a sweet prize! All Ages. Drop off your scene anytime between Monday, April 17 and Thursday, April 20. Scenes will be displayed between April 21 and May 1.
Moana Sing-Along! On Wednesday, April 26 at 6PM Are You Mad for MOANA?!? Join your fellow fans for an epic sing-along to this fabulous film! Snacks and crafts too! Lyric sheets will be provided. Dog Tales Quaker Valley High School Senior Maggie Dobbins has been a staple at the Sewickley Public Library for the last six years. At age 13, as a Girl Scout service award project, Maggie designed and implemented a program called Dog Tales. This program has been a hit at the Sewickley Public Library ever since. The purpose of Dog Tales is to help children improve their reading by practicing in a fun, nonjudgmental environment while reading to Certified Therapy Dogs! Maggie herself owns a beautiful therapy dog named Butter, who makes the children feel at ease with her gentle manner and her soft, fluffy fur. Maggie and Butter have been a dynamic duo ever since Maggie was 8 years old and received Butter from a family friend. Even at that remarkably young age, Maggie felt compelled to make a difference in her community. She trained Butter to earn a Canine Good Citizenship, an award given by the American Kennel Club that requires the mastery of 10 basic obedience commands. At age 11, Maggie and Butter became a certified therapy dog team through Therapy Dog International, which has criteria of 15 obedience and temperament requirements. The team immediately began making a positive impact by visiting local nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and schools. Maggie is an inspiring young woman, and we at the Sewickley Public Library will miss her and her furry friend, Butter. We wish her the best of luck as she goes off to college at Baldwin Wallace University, where she plans to play lacrosse. Maggie, thank you for Dog Tales! 2

ED Talks: Biodiversity in your Backyard with Ed Schroth, Wednesday, April 12, 7PM All humans affect the environment in which they live. There are some simple steps you can take to provide a habitat for our native animals and insects. Native plants create shelter, shade, nesting places and leaf litter, prevent erosion and provide food in the form of leaves, nectar, berries, seeds, and associated bugs. You CAN create your own ‘biodiversity habitat’ in your backyard. Please Register.

Tea & Inspiration Starts Spring Session Sewickley neighbors, Sharon Eakes and Judy Washington are coordinating thoughtful evenings of conversation on Thursday evenings. As Sharon explains, "We share some inspiring quotes on the theme, or subject of the night from the world’s Scriptures and other wise sources. Participants are also encouraged to bring a quotation, a poem, or any other art form on the topic. This provokes reflection and meaningful conversation around our theme. People who have attended have expressed appreciation for this opportunity for deep, thoughtful conversation. They have reported feeling better when they leave than when they came. That’s what we hope for." You are invited to join in these evenings of uplifting conversation. Make a Blind Date with a Book has a record year! The Teen Department’s Make a Blind Date with a Book program takes place every February and gives participating students a FREE BOOK matched to their tastes when they fill out a readers’ survey. This is the fourth year of the program and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. In addition to students from Quaker Valley Middle School, Sewickley Academy and the entire student body of Ambridge Junior High, this year Holy Family Academy students joined in the fun. All told, we gave away around 546 books to area students in grades 6-12.
Sewickley Public Library has many Thanks to Give! In January, the Children’s department received 4 wooden character cut outs. This past month, the Musial Family donated a wooden cut out of Max from Where the Wild Things Are. We could not have been happier!! We LOVE our new decorations!
