O

ur beautiful South West county has long been a favourite for families, and for good reason. With two spectacular coastlines, rolling countryside, charming villages, 2 vibrant cities of Exeter and Plymouth, wide-open moorland of the two national parks, Dartmoor and Exmoor, and a huge variety of attractions for all ages, Devon offers something for every type of family, whatever the age and whatever the weather.

“Devon is the kind of holiday children talk about long after they’ve gone home.” From building sandcastles on award-winning beaches to discovering pre-historic caves, riding heritage steam trains, meeting incredible wildlife and exploring miles of cycling and walking trails, a family trip to Devon is the kind of holiday children talk about long after they’ve gone home. Here’s why it deserves a place at the top of your list.

Coastlines Made for Family Adventures Devon is blessed with not one, but two very different coastlines: the dramatic Atlantic coast of North Devon and the gentler, golden coastline of the South. Both offer unforgettable experiences for families with children of all ages.

06

In North Devon, wide sandy beaches such as Woolacombe, Croyde, Saunton Sands and Putsborough are perfect for swimming, surfing and running free. These are beaches where children can spend hours building sand fortresses, splashing in the waves and exploring rock pools teeming with crabs, starfish and sea anemones. They also make up the North Devon World Surf Reserve. Waves for all abilities from world champion sized waves down to a slight ripple for the beginners. South Devon offers equally charming family favourites like Exmouth, Teignmouth, Blackpool Sands, Goodrington Sands and the many sheltered coves around Torbay often referred to as the “English Riviera.” These beaches offer shallower waters, traditional seaside amusements, ice-cream kiosks and excellent facilities which is ideal for younger children. Whether you’re a family of energetic wavechasers or sand-between-the-toes sunbathers, you’ll find a beach in Devon that suits your holiday style perfectly.

Attractions That Keep Children Smiling All Day One of Devon’s biggest selling points is the sheer variety of world-class family attractions — enough to fill several holidays without repetition.

“Thrill-seekers will adore Crealy Theme Park & Resort and the Milky Way with its rollercoasters, adventure playgrounds and splash zones.”

train through the countryside on the South Devon Railway, or hop aboard a heritage tram along the estuary with the Seaton Tramway. Whether you’re after adrenaline, education or imaginative play, Devon has a day out to suit the mood.

An Outdoor Playground Perfect for Exploring For families who love the great outdoors, Devon is a paradise. The county is home to two national parks — Dartmoor and Exmoor — offering miles of walking trails, cycling trails, riverside picnic spots, dramatic tors, wild ponies and endless fresh air. Cycling families are spoilt for choice. The Exe Estuary Trail is perfect for little legs, with its smooth paths, gentle gradients and well-timed cafés and ice-cream stops. The Tarka Trail, one of the UK’s longest trafficfree cycling routes, offers safe, scenic riding along estuaries, through woodlands, and past charming small towns — perfect for a relaxed family day out.

“Whether you’re after adrenaline, education or imaginative play, Devon has a day out to suit the mood.” Animal-loving families can meet exotic species at Paignton Zoo, adorable farm animals at The Big Sheep, Pennywell Farm and The Milky Way, or rare species at smaller gems like Dartmoor Zoo, Exmoor Zoe and Shaldon Wildlife Trust. Kids can watch feeding sessions, enjoy keeper talks and even get hands-on with certain animals — experiences that spark curiosity and memories that last. Thrill-seekers will adore Crealy Theme Park & Resort and the Milky Way with its rollercoasters, adventure playgrounds and splash zones. Why not explore the River Dart Country Park for all round family fun in beautiful countryside along the River Dart. For a more imaginative day out, step into a different world at Babbacombe Model

Village, where towns and landmarks are recreated in incredible miniature detail, delighting adults and children alike.

“Whether you want to explore hidden coves or paddle alongside seals and seabirds, Devon’s coastline provides endless possibilities..” Devon’s rich history also provides unforgettable experiences for curious minds. The English Riviera: A YEAR-ROUND FAMILY ADVENTURE

If you’re looking for a holiday destination that promises family fun in every season, the English Riviera on Devon’s stunning south coast is hard to beat.

S

tretching from Torquay to Paignton and Brixham, this coastal resort offers year-round adventures. Families can explore sandy beaches, heritage sites, and worldclass attractions. Whether paddling in summer, rambling along cliffs in autumn, taking a cosy winter break, or enjoying a springtime escape, the English Riviera welcomes families throughout the year. And with plenty of dog-friendly options, even the four-legged members of the family can join in!

A Coastline Like No Other The English Riviera’s natural setting is breathtaking. Designated a UNESCO Global Geopark, it’s one of only eight in the UK, recognised for its extraordinary geology and coastal landscapes. Families can explore 22 miles of coastline, where cliffs and hidden coves meet safe, funpacked beaches—perfect for young explorers and keen adventurers alike. The South West Coast Path runs through the English Riviera, offering some of Britain’s most scenic walks. Gentle clifftop strolls are ideal for ice cream stops, while more adventurous hikes reveal secret beaches and dramatic sea views. Keep an eye out for seals on the rocks, seabirds overhead, and—if you’re lucky—dolphins dancing in the bay.

Splash, Play and Explore No family holiday is complete without water-filled fun, and the English Riviera delivers. Splashdown Quaywest, on Goodrington seafront in Paignton, is the UK’s largest outdoor waterpark, with twisting flumes, high-speed slides, and a zone for younger children. Award-winning beaches provide safe, crystal-clear waters for bathing, paddleboarding or kayaking, while rock-pooling and sandcastle-building remain favourites with kids of all ages! RIB rides across the bay are exhilarating, while a gentler seafari gets you up close with nature. Even in cooler months, the region offers plenty for families to do. Step back in time at Bygones in Torquay, with its Victorian street, explore Paignton Zoo with over 2,000 animals, or climb aboard a full-sized replica of

14

“It’s rare to find a destination that truly offers something for every family, in every season” Sir Francis Drake’s Golden Hind in Brixham. Evening entertainment is available at six theatres across the three towns.

Three Towns, Three Unique Characters Each town along the English Riviera has its own distinctive charm. Torquay is elegant and lively. Palmlined promenades and marina cafés add glamour, while the Agatha Christie Mile and Torquay Museum offer a peek into the life of the Queen

of Crime, who was born in Torquay and maintained links with the area throughout her life. Paignton is a classic family favourite. Long sandy beaches, a colourful pier, and traditional amusements create a quintessential holiday feel. Beyond the shore, families can visit Paignton Zoo, try adventure golf, or ride the Dartmouth Steam Railway along the coast. Brixham is a working fishing port with a vibrant maritime heritage. Children can watch fishing boats, sample fresh fish and chips, and explore narrow streets. The coastal walk from Brixham to Berry Head National Nature Reserve rewards walkers with sweeping views and rare wildlife. Excellent transport links make it easy to explore the Bay and hop between Torquay, Paignton, and Brixham.

“While summer beach days are a favourite, autumn and winter bring their own magic.”

Stay, Eat, Relax Accommodation suits every budget and group size, from boutique hotels and self-catering cottages to family-friendly guesthouses and holiday parks, many with sea views, outdoor play areas, and spacious rooms for multi-generational breaks. Dining is diverse. Fresh seafood from Brixham’s fish market, beach cafés, and award-winning restaurants provide plenty of choice. Devon’s famous cream teas, West Country ice cream, and hearty pub lunches make delicious treats after a day of exploring.

Year-Round Reasons to Visit While summer beach days are a favourite, autumn and winter bring their own magic. With a mild South Devon climate, the region is perfect for leisurely beach and woodland walks, cosy café stops overlooking the bay, and exploring indoor attractions like Kents Cavern Prehistoric Caves and Torre Abbey. Spring brings wildflowers along the coastal path and the first chance to dip a toe in the sea. A year-round events calendar ensures there’s always something happening - from seafood and sailing festivals to the Air Show, Pirate Festival, and festive Bay of Lights. Many attractions remain open throughout the year, making planning your stay easy.

SPRING INTO ADVENTURE WITH

Cornwall Cornwall has always had a penchant for marching to the beat of its own drum, doing things slightly different from the rest of England. We put jam first on scones, embrace a more relaxed pace of life, and have our own language. Naturally, in true Cornish fashion, we even have our own start to spring, which is always much earlier than the rest of England, of course. 32

Enys Gardens Enys Gardens, located just a few miles east of Penryn, is a hidden gem believed to be the oldest garden in Cornwall. Spring is the most enchanting time to visit, as the gardens’ star attraction comes into full bloom—the carpets of bluebells in Parc Lye meadow. This natural display is one of the finest in Cornwall, transforming the meadow into a sea of shimmering blue that stretches as far as the eye can see. The woodlands and historic gardens are perfect for leisurely strolls, but the centrepiece of the site is the Mansion House, built around 1830 to replace an earlier house destroyed by fire. It was lived in up to about 1950, when the site was largely abandoned. Since 2010, the current owners have gradually begun restoring the Gardens and buildings, while respecting the legacy of earlier times.

Give them the best IntroDUC tion to swimming

Find the perfect class for you…

As parents we always want what’s best our for our children. We want to do everything in ve. power to watch them learn, play, grow and thri

It’s wonderful to see them change and improve with every life experience.

With Puddle Ducks that difference is obvious. It’s the baby who’s found new confidence in the water. The nervous toddler who now fearlessly jumps in. The shy child who’s made a new group of friends. We’re a swimming school with a difference and we th us, pass that onto you. When you choose to swim wi child. you can see the Puddle Ducks difference in your

Classes can vary, so take time to find a class that will give you the experiences that you want – whether this is just water familiarity or a more progressive approach; and whether the style of the class is relaxed and fun, or more formal and regimented. Specialist baby and pre-school swimming classes follow a clear and progressive structure and will usually involve child-led submersions and surface swims for your little one. However, the emphasis should be on parents/carers and their babies having fun, with no child being forced to do anything against their wishes. The best swimming classes are full of carefully designed but simple activities, gentle submersions and are packed full of songs and rhymes.

There’s a whole host of benefits to taking your little bundle of joy to swimming classes:

How early can I take my baby swimming? It’s never too early or late! Swimming classes offers your child a unique sensory experience and development of water confidence and lifesaving skills that last a lifetime.

Plenty of eye contact & skin contact – it’s a wonderful way to bond Classes have lots of gentle activities helping you and your little one feel relaxed and confident in the water Makes swimming a fun and socially stimulating activity (for both you and your baby!) Even parents who can’t swim can enjoy relaxing in the water with their baby It is the only time your baby can be completely independent (when experiencing gentle submersions) Your baby moves freely and develops actions they wouldn’t otherwise be able to in their first year of life helping to develop crucial higher brain functions, core muscle development and co-ordination far earlier than they would otherwise be able to Even though gentle, baby swimming classes provide a complete physical work-out: strengthening your baby’s heart, lungs and respiratory system, which again aids development of the brain Regular swimming often improves eating and sleeping patterns Learning to respond to key words (within a few months) can make your baby sharper mentally, increasing levels of awareness and understanding as well as improving communication between you Encouraging a baby to take regular exercise from such a young age is also an extremely healthy routine to instil which may prevent childhood lethargy.

Swimming as a baby should instil a love of water & swimming for the rest of your child’s life. Swimming with your little one can seem daunting, even more so in the winter, but don’t be put off by the cold weather, we still love swimming in the winter, and we hope that you do too! It’s a great indoor winter activity, the pools are heated, it’s great for a child’s fitness and development. Doing exercise during the cold weather is really helpful for your body and mind. It’s easy to stay in the warm house while it’s frosty outdoors, but getting into a warm pool can be lovely, and exercise of any sort can help boost your immune system.

Wearing swimwear that is designed to keep the child warm can improve their swimming experience and make the initial transition from the changing rooms to the pool much easier. You’ll find all these swimming essentials and more in our online shop
